The 16 Best Chinese Restaurants In Austin

"While Din Ho might pull a bigger crowd, head just a little further north to Parmer and I-35 to Ho Ho, and you’ll find a very similar menu of Chinese barbecue staples that we like just as much, if not more. And usually, without a wait. Grab an order of crispy salt and pepper shrimp, then order more barbecue pork and roast duck than you think you need—you’ll want to take some home for later. Ho Ho also makes one of our favorite eggplant dishes in town (with shredded pork and garlic) that you should order, even if just to balance out all the meat you’re about to put down.  " - nicolai mccrary, raphael brion

Ho Ho Chinese BBQ - Review - North Austin - Austin - The Infatuation

"While Din Ho might pull a bigger crowd, head just a little farther north to Parmer and I-35 to Ho Ho—started by some former Din Ho owners—and you’ll find a very similar menu of Chinese barbecue staples that we like just as much, if not more. And usually, without a wait, despite the dining room always feeling like it’s packed full of families and small groups. Grab an order of crispy salt and pepper shrimp, then order more barbecue pork and roast duck than you think you need—you’ll want to take some home for later. Went in here for lunch during the week. Has a great lunch special for $10.50 that comes with an entrée, side of rice, egg roll, and choice of three kind of soups. Ate the General Tso chicken with fried rice and wonton soup. Chicken was very flavorful but slightly chewy. Fried rice felt a little lacking in flavor and kinda dry but still pretty tasty. The egg drop soup my partner had was very tasty, wonton soup was a little lacking. The cream cheese Rangoon appetizer was perfectly fried and we enjoyed the egg rolls as well. Service was very attentive and friendly. Atmosphere is kinda lacking but still had an overall great lunch experience. Definitely recommend for a decent lunch Chinese spot.

Google
We have been coming here for many years . Food has always been consistently great. In addition to the normal Chinese dishes, they have a really good wonton soup and their pork barbecue is very tasty Prices are very reasonable, considering the portions you get. The lunch menu has great options and is really reasonably priced and you get a lot of food. Vegetarian options are plenty. Not much more to say than good selection, quality of food and quick service has always been my experience.

Ho Ho Chinese BBQ is a hidden gem for Cantonese-style roast meats in Austin. The roast duck and BBQ pork are flavorful, juicy, and have that perfect crispy skin and caramelized glaze. You can see the meats hanging by the window—always a good sign! Portions are generous, and the prices are fair, especially for the combo plates. The interior is no-frills, but the food more than makes up for it. Service is fast and efficient, and they do a brisk takeout business. If you’re craving authentic Chinese BBQ, Ho Ho delivers the real deal.

Google
This is an old Chinese restaurant with fantastic food. My family and I always order the live lobster, which is incredibly fresh and tender. We especially love the salt and pepper seasoning, and the fried garlic on top is a must-have. It’s one of the main reasons we keep coming back. In addition to the lobster, they offer a wide range of sautéed dishes that attract food lovers who enjoy authentic Chinese cuisine. The food comes out quickly, so we never have to wait long. We also make sure to order the Peking duck and roast pork, both of which are excellent choices. Highly recommended! I’ve rated the atmosphere lower, though, because the restaurant is quite old and could really use a renovation to update the furniture.

Google
Most folks come here for the barbecue. My wife loves the duck, her family loves the lobster. I have a preference for their crispy noodles, fried pork chop and wonton soup. Good wait service but the bathrooms are always a nightmare. Really good prices. Lots of veggie options.

Google
This was a great find and plenty of parking. It’s kind of hidden. The good was great. I had the bbq duck and pork. There was enough portions for the next day. The price is incredibly affordable. I would highly recommend this if you’re wanting good food with good portions for a very affordable dining.

Google
Quality went downhill. Worst char siu and roast pork I have ever had. Uneven cut. Fatty part was not rendered at all and super hard to chew. Seasoning wasn’t there either, very bland. Roast pork had a very tough texture on the skin, not crispy at all. And there are hair on the roast duck !!!!!! Been buying and supporting them through the pandemic and this is beyond disappointing. Would not come back again.

Google
Very tasty food! I thought it was authentic and good in flavor for each dish we ordered. Not super clean atmosphere but is very typical of the restaurants that I think are good. My favorite dish would be the fish with corn sauce, but I didn't have a picture of that cuz i got hungry.

Yelp
Ho Ho Chinese BBQ, This place is so delicious and I love to come here. You get seated immediately, your food comes extremely fast while still super hot. And the food is delicious. The place its self is very nice. I love the chinese style the place it is. I hope this helps if your trying to come here.

Yelp
LOVE LOVE LOVE this place. Been coming here for almost a decade, my son was itty bitty and now he orders his own plate. It's a lovely place to eat during lunch time or with the entire family. The amount of food they serve for the amount they charge is unbeatable. The staff is also amazing, I feel so welcomed when I come by.

Yelp
-Hole in the wall -authentic Chinese -low effort service but who really cares when the food is pretty spectacular -worth every dollar you spend

Yelp
I LOVED my experience. The sesame beef was 10/10. Dare I say it was was cooked to perfection (meat wasn't dry and the breading was perfectly crispy). The sauce was delicious as well. I even ordered a side of it to-go! I also got the BBQ pork with egg. The pork was very good. Next time, I'm just going to get the BBQ pork plate without the egg. Last but not least, I got the vegetable delight. Could have been seasoned a bit more but the veggies tasted nice and fresh. I particularly loved the mushrooms. Two honorable mentions: First, our waiter! He was super nice and helpful. I wish I remembered his name! Second, some dishes come with unlimited white rice. As a rice lover, I really appreciated that. I 100% recommend coming here!

Yelp
We tried this location on a whim while dropping someone off nearby to get their car serviced. The prices are more reasonable than alot of other Chinese options in Austin, but the quality is not. The building is older, as evidenced when you walk in. They still have old signs hanging up and wallpaper coming off the walls. The food wasn't very good but it was plentiful. The staff was friendly and helpful, even after seeing us be. A little apprehensive about trying it. Right when you walk in they have food on display, like roasted duck (which was recommended by staff). I could see why this place is well liked if you enjoy this type of food, but it's not for me and I'm unable to recommend it at this time.

Yelp
Worst chow fun I ever had yet MOST expensive I have ever had. Mushy and soupy. Why?! "Egg roll" was really an empty spring roll. Don't order it. Only thing good and authentic is the wonton soup but not worth $20. Wow I miss nyc and getting $5 wonton soup down the street and good dumplings too. This is way too expensive.
google avatar

Yelp
The $10 lunch special at hoho is too legit to quit. Service is as expected for a chinese restaurant. But you're not here to be wine and dined. you're here because the food is good, the service is fast and the price is right . Is the restaurant clean? maybe Do they have a cloudy fish tank with too many fish? yes are there an assortment of hanging meats when you walk in? yes But this is all to be expected when going to a legit chinese restaurant and if you're in the area, you should go too!

Yelp
First time trying this place on Christmas Eve and they really impressed me. I have to applaud the staff for clearly hustling on such a busy, hectic holiday. They were overridden with customers picking up, dining in, placing orders in person, online and over the phone - but still managed to stay calm, professional, and efficient. From placing my order online to pickup it was only about 40 min. It was a zoo in there but I never saw the staff stop moving The Beijing duck was my favorite dish and would order again! The rock chicken was also good but some people might be turned off by the bone-in chicken and claw.
google avatar

Lillian S.

Yelp
Perfect, as always. Great flavor, good service. I picked it up to go. This is my go to for Chinese food, whenever I'm in Austin.

Yelp
I am thrilled I stumbled upon Ho Ho Chinese! I met my friend here to try the Peking Duck and the fried garlic Dungeness crab. Oh my fried garlic goodness all I wanted to do is lick my fingers it was so tasty. I can't wait to bring my family back here for more duck and crab deliciousness! This place isn't fancy but it was packed which speaks volumes!
google avatar

Yelp
Would give a 0 star if we could! Terrible customer service! The Chinese guy this morning on Thanksgiving day passing out turkeys was extremely rude and had a super bad attitude! WORST experience ever! Will NEVER go back!

Yelp
First time here, we were undecided where to have for dinner and we ended up here, we had a pleasant time, our waitress was very welcoming and helpful so 10/10 for the services and food was delicious, every single dish was very tasty, the only down side is the place is a little dated and need some love a tidy up won't hurt and a small facelift would do, over all can't complain we're definitely coming back.

Yelp
I'm a sucker for these cheaper, sit-down, family style, Chinese restaurants. This one is in Austin and we went after not being able to find seating elsewhere on a Friday night. We ordered a few dishes to start off, the seafood egg drop soup, a chicken dish, a tofu and mushroom dish, fried noodles, and char siu pork. My friend did the ordering so I don't know the name of some of these dishes but you can tell what's on them through the pictures. I loved the fried noodles. They were flavorful and filled with sauce. The tofu and mushroom dish was good but nothing spectacular. The chicken dish had a surprising amount of vegetables and not enough chicken. My friend loves seafood soup so he ordered it. We decided to get char siu at the end because there wasn't enough meat from the previous dishes. The char siu was tender and meaty. The sweet savory sauce on top was great. The price wasn't bad. It was $90 for us three and we got 5 dishes.

Yelp
Ho Ho serves the best authentic Cantonese food in Austin. My family have been customers since 2009. The food has remained consistent and delicious. Our favorite foods to order are the peking duck, crispy chow mein, double lobster, roast pork, and won ton soup. Their prices are very reasonable. Pro tip: bring cash! You get a 10% discount off your bill.

Yelp
Let's start with the good and move on to the "room for improvement" category later. For starters, the service was incredibly fast and the food came out in record time while being piping hot. The Szechuan Beef was an available lunch special and i paired it with fried rice and wonton soup. The food was good, very low prices, and the portions were massive (see photo of fried rice). The star of the show for me was the dumplings in the wonton soup. If you are going with soup, I would order this with confidence. The rice was OK. Rather plain, but it is just egg fried rice. The Szechuan option was delicious. Plenty of veggies and the sauce had some nice heat to it. Now for the room for improvement category. The restaurant sold live fish, and you could definitely smell it. If you are going to sell live seafood, this is an unavoidable consequence, but I am personally not a fan of it. The cleanliness was absolutely acceptable I wouldn't call it immaculate, but I was sliding around on the freshly mopped floors, so you know they stay on top of it. The restaurant is certainly dated, but you're coming there to eat the food, not admire the furniture or fresh paint. All in all, I will not be rushing back to eat here again. However, I would still come here again and have a good meal for a fantastic price.

Yelp
This restaurant is not a 3.5 star. It should be a 5 star restaurant. The food here is absolutely amazing. It feels and smells like nostalgia. But better yet, taste like authentic Chinese food. It was so comforting. I highly recommend this place but mostly dine in. Such a great experience and amazing servers.
google avatar

Yelp
I came here for lunch on a Sunday and it was packed! They have a waiting section in the front for people making to-go orders. We were seated quickly on arrival. We ordered half of a Beijing duck with a side of steamed buns and scallions and cucumbers on the side. The taste was very authentic and I love the texture of the crisp duck skin paired with the soft fluffy buns. This was the perfect amount of food for two. I'll definitely be back if I'm craving peking duck.
google avatar

Rob L.

Yelp
Take out food was just OK. Lots of better options. Hot and sour soup and an entree.
google avatar

Lori H.

Yelp
We went here for a weekday birthday lunch at noon. Surprisingly it was not busy. The booth tables were not roomy enough for multiple plates. We had the wonderful ton noodle soup, sautéed vegetables with snow peas, mushrooms and bok choy with the garlic white sauce instead of brown, the combo plate with bbq pork and roast duck and ordered the buns for the duck since the combo included rice, and someone else ordered the bbq pork. My apologies for no photos, when you're with a group, sometimes there's too many distractions but wanted to provide my review since this was my first time. The first impression of walking in was nothing to brag on. No greeting, the couple that walked in after me were seated first, which I thought was rude but got sat 5 minutes later. There is no ambiance so don't expect anything fancy but it seems like the food is better than most Chinese restaurants around, driving 20 miles from my location. We started with the crab rangoons that were a good size and very generously stuffed with cream cheese filling, and the fried pork/shrimp won ton that was crisp and delicious. There are not many steamed options, mostly fried. The duck and pork combo were moist and very tasty so I'd stick with their specialties. The won ton noodle soup was ok, with the broth and won tons being flavorful. I did not try the stir fried vegetables but it looked good and cooked perfectly. If it weren't so far, I may consider returning to have their seafood options. Our waitstaff seemed friendly, but not overly friendly. I'd definitely give them another try.

Han H.

Yelp
Prices keep going up while quality has gone down. It's hard for us to continue coming here when Din Ho has been far more consistent. Their roast duck (not peking) is still the best in Austin.
google avatar

Ali B.

Yelp
I was scrolling through DoorDash today wondering what to have for lunch and I landed on Beijing duck sandwiches again. I love a good fatty duck with a crispy skin on steamed rice buns. A little sauce, a little green onion, a little cucumber and it's a complete meal in a convenient handheld form. I think I order this about once a week, and it occurs to me I have never reviewed this restaurant which is negligent and shortsighted on my part. Honestly, I've never had anything else at this restaurant but their duck sandwich is so exquisite that my brain just assumes they're superior at everything. So if you go there and don't like it, don't blame me. You should've had the duck sandwiches.
google avatar

Yelp
Hoho. 好好It means "Good good" in Cantonese but whether the food is good or not-that's debatable. The Chinese style pork chop does not have enough meat-it reminds me of fake meat vegans would eat. The oyster tofu bowl was (ok, I don't like tofu BUT everything was super salty. All you could taste was the sauce). The duck has too much fat on it and is icky. Not to mention, there was a pesky mosquito flying around the food. And some kind of ant crawling on my bowl that I did not use. It does come with rice, and the rice was ok. My parents come here every time they visit because Chinese parents must eat Chinese food...even tho this place isn't good!! My parents also agree that this visit wasn't good. Take it with a grain of salt...or a mosquito but it's not a place for good food.
google avatar

Mimi W.

Yelp
This is the best Chinese restaurant you will find in Austin. This place beats places in San Antonio and some Houston places. Hot pots, noodles, fish, beef, chicken, pork, and vegetables.... You name it, they have something tasty!! Our last visit, we get roast pork, bbq pork, duck, sweet and sour pork, bass with Chinese vegetables, ma po tofu, Chinese broccoli, and chicken fried rice. Pay in cash, let them know ahead of time and you'll thank me later! See you at Ho Ho's!
google avatar

Janet K.

Yelp
Sorry this is so late. We were here Christmas Eve. We ate in. Now, to be honest, we probably won't do that again. The restaurant really does need to be remodeled. But the food was so good, it really didn't matter in the end. No feeling gross afterward. No headaches. Just yummy, homemade Chinese food. The take out line was out the door the entire time we were there. Highly recommend.

Chris ..

Yelp
Really bad customer service. We have a party of 3 for dine in lunch. My wife was coming from home, so she arrived first while my daughter and I are on our way to the restaurant and will be few minutes late. My wife was asked by Li who is at the register for how many, and my wife said 3 but the other 2 will be few minutes lates. Mr. Li said sorry you have to be complete before I can let you sit down on the table, so she had to wait outside. When I arrived, I spoke to Mr Li as to why she was not allowed to have a sit when there was barely any customer. He claimed that they are busy which I 100% disagree. There was not that many customers and no lines.

Yelp
Ho Ho's should have a Xmas theme. Other than that, it's pretty decent Chinese food in North Austin. Had the fried beef rice noodles and duck. Service with no attitude. Will be back for more.
google avatar

Jeff R.

Yelp
Duck Bbq pork Fried rice Excellent The fresh shellfish is great too. Everything I have tried is extraordinary

Nathalie R.

Yelp
Absolutely incredible spot. Delicious food and I'll be back to try more things from the humongous menu.

Yelp
Delicious food. Typical Chinese eatery service & decor. Pricing is more to the pricier side.... But definitely worth the trip.
google avatar

Yelp
I wasn't expecting to find authentic, quality Cantonese BBQ in Austin. Honestly, I was hoping just for serviceable to pass the cravings in between trips home to California. Located in North Austin, Ho Ho is not the most convenient for me to get to from South Austin but having tried it now, it is definitely worth the drive. I had some errands to run so I finally was able to give it a try and ordered some BBQ staples for take out - sweet Cha Siu BBQ Pork and Roast Pork with the crispy skin. Both preparations were juicy and not dry, which is extremely hard to do. I'd say on average, ones I get from places are drier and have more chew to them. But this batch I ordered was so tender and good. And the skin on the roast pork was perfectly crisp. I'm excited to try other cuts of meat and things from the menu now that I know the quality. And I can easily see myself getting some BBQ takeout at least once a month now.
google avatar

Duong D.

Yelp
I love Chinese food tastes like sweet, sour, spicy, salty and butter elements and the best part of the meal!

Cristina B.

Yelp
I would've given it a 5 star but I was so dissatisfied with the roast pork. It was dry and the sauce that came with it seems to be just a hoison sauce. It just didn't taste right. Otherwise, their roast duck was delicious. I also ordered their won ton soup with noodles they were delicious but the noodles were a bit hard , like it wasn't soaked in hot water long enough.
google avatar

Blythe A.

Yelp
Great place to eat very nice people. First time at the restaurant, the waiters literally know each dish and were able to make recommendations We loved the pork and duck combo the other food we ordered was all family style. Great food..
google avatar

Mary S.

Yelp
Pretty good food here at Ho Ho, Cantonese style and nice ambience. Attentive, friendly staff. Enjoyed dining out by myself. Very comfortable place, will return. I got a spicy Shrimp and Scallop, wasn't as spicy compared to other variety of chinese. Tea has loose leaves,

Eric H.

Yelp
Hoho isn't what it used to be but we are very limited in Chinese bbq options in Austin
google avatar

Carrie M.

Yelp
This was a good spot for a Chinese New Year lunch. My friend and I shared the roast pork/roast duck combo and the sauteed Chinese vegetable dish. The pork was very tasty, while the duck was good but nothing special. The vegetable was also very typical. I really like how they gave us big pots of rice.
google avatar

Ruby C.

Yelp
This place was touted as an authentic Cantonese restaurant by a Chinese grandma in her 60s so I came with high expectations. Parking is a plenty. 5 stars. Cleanliness and smell. The fact that this gets its own category says something. Sadly it is not uncommon for grungy authentic places to smell like this and have questionable standards of cleanliness. But this place was pretty bad. 1.5 stars. Honestly if they improved here, I would up the rating to a 4 or 5 (considering Chinese offerings in Austin). Floor was super slippery. Walked with caution like on an ice skating rink. Zero stars. Ordered the assorted seafood over rice. "Over rice" dishes are so comforting. I love mixing the cornstarch gravy with rice. This dish actually tasted fine - just like how it should, but the rice was undercooked. Still a decent 3 stars for taste.
google avatar

Joshua T.

Yelp
Dirty and ran down with moldy interior. Food quality has deteriorated drastically and the Chinese BBQ was genuinely not up to par.
google avatar

Amie N.

Yelp
Food is not bad at all, but nothing to rave about in my opinion. I would probably rate it 3/5 but the service was fast, so that bumped them up a star for me. I remember the food being better when I went years ago, but like I said, the food is still alright. I still ate my fill and felt satisfied. The crab asparagus soup seemed to be a bit bland, but the crispy squid/calamari was quite salty. The shrimp fried rice tasted pretty standard, and the portion was big for the fried rice. The fried tofu with special salt was good, but it could've been crispier. I also love snow pea leaves, but I wish they made theirs with more flavor and garlic. Overall, I would still come here again because the food isn't bad but it's not the best Chinese food I've ever had either. It's the perfect place for big groups or family gatherings though!
google avatar

Jess L.

Yelp
Lunch special alert!!!! $10-10.50. Go there immediately! Large portions and so good. Could've probably split my meal into two! General tsos chicken with fried rice and hot and sour soup. 6/5, just so delicious. Next time, I would get the general tsos with white rice instead of fried rice since the sauce is a bit salty. Hot and sour soup was also a 6/5, just a great soup! Egg roll was also super crispy and delicious. I can't say anything bad about this meal and I can't wait to return!
google avatar

Yvonne O.

Yelp
It's a vintage place, looks like built a decade and I can say one of the legit Asian Food restaurant. They have live lobsters. I like the pork belly it's just that it wasn't that warm enough when served. Everything we ordered was good. I wanna come back and try the other foods they have .

Ralph V.

Yelp
Started off with egg drop soup delicious. Sesame chicken was tender and delicious as well fried rice and egg roll. Service fast and friendly. Best of all all that food for a total $11.37 not bad!!!
google avatar

Aaron D.

Yelp
Very friend and helpful staff. Parking is very easy and plentiful. Very big menu. Food is authentic and very very good. We had take out and it was very well packaged and was still warm over 40 mins later when we were home. Portions were big. I recommend this neighborhood staple!
google avatar

LuLu N.

Yelp
We were in town visiting and my sister-in-law took us here for lunch. We had a meat sampler plate that consisted of bbq pork, roasted duck and roasted pork belly. We also had the hot and sour soup, sautéed garlic snow pea tips, and salty fish fried rice. Everything was delicious. I'm not a fan of hot and sour soup, but the one here was just the perfect balance of heat and sourness. The salty fish fried rice was the best I've had ever! I asked my husband if we could get some more before we head back home. Our server was very attentive and nice.

Benjamin F.

Yelp
It's the best Chinese bbq in north Austin.........but, why is there aluminum bits in my roast pork?
google avatar

Pedro Juan G.

Yelp
My previous review got erased; actually all my reviews were erased. I can certainly recommend Ho-Ho (gives me a sly smile) for their fantastic chefs. Very good steamed fish in soy sauce; excellent Beijing duck (really good) with all the fixings; excellent Ee-mien and other noodle dishes. Their cooking reminds me of lots of trip to Asia. You go for the food and not the furnishings or a place to dine and converse; very reminiscent of dining in Chinatown ( very close to Austin Chinatown);-) This place gets very crowded in the weekends; it's worth the wait.
google avatar

Julia J.

Yelp
One of the few good Chinese restaurants in Austin. Food is almost always great. Friendly staff. My only complaint is that some beef dishes are very light on the beef, despite the higher price. Other than that, it's a great place!

Joanne M.

Yelp
Unhoused people right out front, not far from the entrance. The immediate entrance was more dirty and disgusting than any restaurant I've ever been to in my 42 years. We had to leave because of these things even though the menu looked good. I cannot believe people accept this level of dirtiness in a restaurant. Do better.
google avatar

Ruthie W.

Yelp
We've been here many different times before the covid situation since it's a favorite Chinese restaurant in Austin. We enjoy the roast duck and fresh seafood from the aquarium/tank. This past Sunday we had been in town briefly and ordered food to go. Smelling the food on our drive back to San Antonio seriously made me hungry. The wonton noodle soup was top notch as usual, very comparable to Houston. The orange beef was good with a spicy kick to it. The seafood pan-fried noodle was delicious. The roast duck meat was very juicy and the skin was very crispy. Probably the disappointment was the snow pea leaves and the shrimp flat rice noodles. The vegetable seemed old and the flat rice noodles weren't on point. It seemed that the dining area was still closed. Hopefully, people are ordering food to keep this business going.
