The Best Breakfasts in Denver | Eater Denver

"On Old South Pearl, this vegetarian-friendly cafe conjures the modern Southwest through its menu as well as its decor. Among its bestsellers is the giant farmer’s burrito stuffed with scrambled eggs, fried potatoes, and green chile and topped with slaw, tahini, and gochujang sauce, as well as both pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds. Pair it all with the creamy cafe de olla (or a guava mimosa) for kicks." - Ruth Tobias

The Best Burritos in Denver | Eater Denver

"This daytime haven for vegetarians on Old South Pearl fills its tortillas with things like jackfruit chorizo, scrambled tofu, black beans, potatoes, cashew crema, and even cucumbers while topping them, in true Southwestern style, with green or red chile (or both) — except for the Farmer’s Burrito, which comes topped with tahini and kochu sauces, cabbage, jalapeños, and sunflower and pumpkin seeds. Wash it all down with an ultra-creamy cafe de olla or, if some hair of the dog is in order, a pink guava mimosa." - Lucy Beaugard

11 Best Vegetarian & Vegan Restaurants in Denver | Condé Nast Traveler

"White walls, terra cotta pots, and artfully arranged cacti make HOJA, a tiny daytime café on Old South Pearl, feel like a find on some dusty Santa Fe side street. Its aesthetic easily carries over to its focused menu, composed of the mostly vegetarian Mexican plates its name implies ("hoja" is Spanish for “leaf”). With an open kitchen taking up half the room, the restaurant is a tight squeeze with all of five or six tables—yet somehow the space is a breath of fresh air." - Ruth Tobias

Phenomenal food: tasty, great textures, unique, cozy, so flavorful. Great for vegans and meat eaters. Also, the lettuce and veggies that come with the meals are delicious and totally nutritious and worth eating, which is more than can be said about most mexican places… everything is perfect. Smallish menu but delicious. This place is worth every penny. Great service: everyone has always been kind, personable, competent and has offered a smile when I’ve been in. Quick service as well. Cute atmosphere on Pearl St. and great decor. Nice A/C in the summer. Fun drink and pastry options. Five stars!! Worth a stop.

Google
Had classic and farmers breakfast burritos and the cafe olla. My lord this place is good. Worth the 5 star reviews. Great vegan options as well.

Google
The food is so delicious here! My favorites are the chips and salsa, chilaquiles, and the pazole! So yummy and the atmosphere is so nice! The people there are very welcoming as soon as you walk in! Top 5 favorite in Denver!

Google
A must! If you are in the Denver area. The vibes of this restaurant made you feel so good. Ben, the owner waits on you! Totally delightful. The other staff are warm and welcoming but, come here for the food. The presentation is beautiful, and the food is outstanding.

We've been coming here since we moved to Denver 3 years ago and we can't get enough. The food quality continues to impress. The atmosphere is welcoming. Plus, the owners and employees take the time to know us. 10/10 every time.

Google
Amazing place with cool vibes and great staff. The service was personable and attentive. We already were at 5 stars without even touching on the food and drinks. The food is unique with tons of flavor and there's options for everyone! Best yet, they have a dog friendly and heated (yes!) patio. Our pups received the same amazing service. Highly recommend and can't wait to come back.

Google
¡Dios mio! And oh my god, so good! My chilqquiles and cafe de olla were the perfect mix of light, fresh and earthy soul food. Little touches like Mexican style cheeses and thinly sliced poblanos tells ya that the kitchen knows what they're doing. Plateware like you find in abuela's kitchen (mine at least!) brought it home for me. Adjacent to S. Pearl, Wash Park & University neighborhoods.

Google
At first I was slightly hesitant to eat here due to the limited menu, but when I arrived, they had a “daily specials” menu and after ordering the Brisket Quesadillas, I’m so glad I came. The quesadillas were so flavorful and the coffee was fantastic. Customer service was top notch. Will certainly eat here again.

Yelp
Amazing then, Amazing now! Came to Hoja years ago and loved the atmosphere and the food was incredible. Thrilled to report that it hasn't just maintained their warmth and good vibes but totally blew me away with their updates indoors and the food is better than ever. The staff is so welcoming and feels like family. You'll want to stay and keep eating cookies and drinking more coffee. Favorites: farmers burrito, chilaquiles, Matcha latte, and the Cafe de olla Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
mmmmm Hoja is so delicious! my go-to is the Farmer's Burrito, but I've had some others and each is better than the next. special shout out to the Jewish apple cake--so yum! the place itself is adorable. I've sat outside and in. the outside is a covered patio that they keep warm when necessary. the inside is small, but totally fine when you find a spot.

Yelp
Amazing food, people, & space! Had the Beso del Chorizo vegan burrito - PHENOMENAL!!! Spiced tofu, veg chorizo, potatoes, fresh cilantro/greens - MUY SABROSO! Big patio out back that's pet friendly - with roll down "walls/ceiling" during winter! Staff is SUPER friendly and happy to explain menu. Good coffee drinks too! They make it all from scratch/to order, so relax for a minute(!) knowing food will be fresh& tasty!

Yelp
Such a fan of this sun-lit filled spot. Staff is really sweet, and the breakfast burritos and prices can't be beat. It's a little small inside, but there's a great patio for when it's warmer. Loved the lattes, too! If you're lucky you can catch their food truck at the Pearl St. Farmer's Market!
google avatar

Yelp
Incredible food. Super delicious and the coffee is good too. The inside is fun and clean but we wanted to be outside in the sun; they have a couple tables out front. Order at the counter and they give you a number and bring out your food to you.
google avatar

Yelp
Incredible vegan options that are so tasty. With little treats for pups my friends dogs love visiting here. There's more seating in the back outside which I find to be so pretty and enjoyable to be at. Everyone is nice and I love the cactus

Yelp
Lovely small spot with amazing food, drinks, and service. Ordered the farmer's burrito and almond milk chai. I have some food sensitivities and they were incredibly accommodating and kind. They have gluten free and vegan options and modifications. The burrito was outstanding! A nice spice level and I loved all the veggies it came with. The chai was also delicious. One of the staff came to check on me after I finished and asked if everything was good -- it was! Highly recommend!

Yelp
I live walking distance from this awesome little restaurant. Their Matcha is probably my favorite thing in the entire world. I have to refrain from coming here twice a day. They are extremely nice and I love all their homemade goods in the refrigerator.

Penny J.

Yelp
drinks are better than some of the food, food can be a bit hit or miss, though their vegan options are pretty good. We really like their drinks - they are usually well crafted. Some of the service can be spotty. The woman tending register Sunday 12/8 /24 around 1pm is not friendly or seemingly grateful to have customers, and that's after this place had to shut down during covid and construction along pearl st. How you treat people who have been supporting your business for the past few years should matter. We say thank you as customers and i dont think it's asking much to be treated with a minimum level of respect -in kind.

Yelp
This place is amazing! Ambiance is 10/10 Food is flavorful and and delicious. They have homemade tortillas you can take home and sauces. They have great drinks and I forgot to take a picture of the burrito which was amazing. Service was 10/10 we had our pup with us and the owner gave him a treat which he loved very much

Yelp
Lovely little place, you could easily miss it walking down the street. We had actually planned to go elsewhere but were in a time crunch and had our dog with us, so we decided to eat here, instead. We were going to sit out front when we were told the back patio was also dog-friendly, had some open seats, and a heater running, so we opted to move and were so pleasantly surprised! It was a nice space, food was great, and our dog got lots of love. We had breakfast burritos and the ingredients were fresh and delicious. We will definitely be back!

Cynthia C.

Yelp
It all went well - delicious burrito. It was ready promptly and there was pleasant service.

Yelp
2023 is the year we make margaritas breakfast drinks! The passion fruit margarita was phenomenal and I'd take that over a mimosa any day. It paired perfectly with the huevos rancheros which was a delightful light take on a traditionally heavy dish. Hoja's interior looks small but they have a decent amount of seating for indoor dining and the staff is consistently kind and helpful.
google avatar

Rayna M.

Yelp
Super cute atmosphere and GREAT area! The staff was lovely. The quality of the food isn't great. I don't think it's the cook, they were making beautiful dishes it's just not great food and ingredients. Pretty much anything you can make at home and salt would have been a good addition to the table. This would be nice after a workout in the area if you have the money to drop $25 on breakfast.

Yelp
We were in the neighborhood so decided to try Hoja for lunch. Restaurant has a clean, modern interior w/natural woods and cacti. There is a grab-n-go cooler in the lobby. There are a couple two person booths, and a table inside. There is an additional room in back with more seating. The employees were very nice and service was great. I enjoyed the carnitas quesadilla w/smoky pork chunks. We shared the chips and salsa/bean dip/avocado and the spicy cucumbers. The chips were fresh and crispy, the salsa and bean dip both had creative, unusual & tasty flavors. Get the cucumbers - they are amazing!! Spicy, tangy with a variety of flavors - pumpkin seeds, peanuts, jalapeños, cucumbers, sunflower seeds, Tajin, etc. that all work well together. Enjoyed icy bottled Cokes as well. Will be back soon for more cukes!

Yelp
4 stars because reviews really do matter for local restaurants so I want to provide some feedback without an unfair rating. It was our first time, too, and we're always willing to give a place a second go. Breakfast for the two of us: two meals, 2 non alcoholic drinks, $55 including tip. Excuse the lack of photos. We went and were in the moment with friends and phones did not come out. $17 for a very small portion of chilaquiles. Onefold has some of the best chilaquiles around for around $16 and the portions are twice the size. My $17 burrito tasted authentic--red chile, green chile, cream sauce with greens and seeds to cover the burrito. Inside was nothing special: eggs, potatoes, cucumbers seasoned well. The coffee and horchata with cold brew were solid. Great service, beautiful space with a substantial patio in the back. Felt authentic from the presentation to the ingredients, just not worth almost $60 for a casual breakfast experience.

Christian O.

Yelp
$25 for a mediocre breakfast burrito and a "latte" (sweetened, odd flavored coffee, a splash of milk, and a orange slice? Served lukewarm. $8. Most dumped in the gutter.) Mexican music BLASTING your brains out. No mas.

Larissa C.

Yelp
The food and drinks were very yummy. The service was fast and the ambience was nice. Can't wait to go back!

Crystal N.

Yelp
Adorable little spot I got their burrito special for the day which was delicious and some enchiladas for dinner that were premade and ready to go great prices amazing staff, and we walked our pup through the restaurant to get to the back patio, which was covered away from the rain such a great little spot definitely worth checking out especially if you have dogs.

Peter Y.

Yelp
Great tasty food and very fun upbeat vibe. The place is bigger than it looks from the outside. Cafe ola drink is !it's a self serve location for your water and they'll bring food to your table after you order at the counter. They have a little refrigerator section where you can pick up some tasty foods for home.
google avatar

Caroline N.

Yelp
Very vegan friendly restaurant. Pro: creative menu, good chai latte. Cons: space is very small, disorganized ordering system, no regulation with pets. Honestly should probably be reported to the health department for how many dogs they allowed on the back seating area. Was very unsafe, unhygienic, and disruptive. They need to do some source control. Will not return.
google avatar

Yelp
Well shoot i hate to rate this place badly... cute tiny restaurant with a few tiny tables inside and then more tables in the back outside. Friendly employees. Can park on the street. Unfortunately I really did not like my breakfast burrito. It did not taste good at all. I tried to add hot sauce to it but it didn't help at all. :( However, the iced cafe olla was quite tasty. Most of it was ice and it was $6.... But tasty...
google avatar

Kelsey T.

Yelp
I only had time for a quick coffee, but I'm definitely coming back to try their cocktails. This place is so cute, and the cold brew was fantastic and reasonably priced. The barista was so helpful and kind, definitely great service.
google avatar

Yelp
A quaint little brunch spot in a fun part of town. The patio was wonderful and dog friendly. Food was good and tasted fresh.

Yelp
I wanted a tofu breakfast burrito and Denver delivered! Hoja is such a gem, and the breakfast options they have for vegans & vegetarians far exceed any other Mexican & Mexican-adjacent restaurants I've ever had before. I am devastated I don't have a similar option in San Francisco! For those interested, this was what we got. Farmers Burrito Scrambled free-range eggs (or organic tofu scramble), green chile, house cut hash browns, cucumbers, slaw, fresh jalapenos, tahini, kochu, sunflower seeds and pepitas El Beso del Chorizo Our signature vegan breakfast burrito, rolled enticingly thick with vegan cheese, organic tofu scrambles, seasoned potatoes, jackfruit chorizo, black bean puree, cashew cream, walnut salsa macha, and chopped cilantro & onion.

Yelp
Anytime I'm feeling blue, or dealing with migraines from the bi-polar Colorado weather Hoja gives me just the vacay vibes I need. From the ambiance to the unique Latin-inspired food fusions, they have this spot dialed in for my go-to tranquil time. The only drawback I've experienced is with typical busy times for the 9-5 crowd (gets quite crowded in the small space). However, the service has always been on top of their game and gets the food out quick.
google avatar

Mauriah C.

Yelp
My partner and I have been here a few times~ Probably one of the best vegan-friendly brunch spots you can find in denver. Vegan burritos, bowls, and the best cashew crema I've had. Guava mimosas as well as prickly pear and passionfruit margaritas are super refreshing & not too sweet. The Cafe de Olla is also a unique coffee beverage at this spot (ever so slightly sweetened & with an orange wheel garnish). Other perks: *beautiful back patio *dog-friendly front patio

Yelp
Took my little sister here when she came to visit and the place was so cute !!! Kinda small but they have ample seating surprisingly. You order your food then sit. I like that they had quite a bit of breakfast options that can be made vegan. Tried the breakfast burrito, vegan style, and it was delish!! Their sauces are also really good. My sis tried the breakfast quesadilla and loved it. We also got some sweet treats as we were leaving. The server was really helpful to ensure my food was vegan too which I really appreciated. Great place overall. Will be back!

Jasmine D.

Yelp
We had breakfast here and this place was wonderful. I had one of the best vegan burritos I have ever had in my life here and the service was great. The cooks made my two year old a bear out of an orange that made her day. Drinks, food, service and atmosphere were perfect. We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Amanda F.

Yelp
My husband and I got lunch here for the first time today and they are killin it with their VEGAN food yayyyy!!!! The food is genuinely amazing, great burritos, cookies, and chips and salsaaa!!! We're happy to find a place with good vegan eats which is few and far between in Denver. We'll be back for more soon.
google avatar

Yelp
*takeout only review* Huge portions, fresh and tasty ingredients, and inventive combos! I got the farmers burrito with tofu and 1 - it was MASSIVE. I ended up splitting it into two meals. 2 - couldn't tell at all that it was tofu. They did a great job with the seasonings, and I didn't miss eggs at all. The slaw and cucumber combo in a burrito are unique, however I didn't find it unpleasant. This is not your typical potato cheese and protein burrito, which often leaves me feeling overly stuffed and heavy after. I really loved the crunch as well as the sauce that went on top! I will definitely be returning in person to try more!

Yelp
Hoja is a tiny, hidden gem - one that you can easily pass and not realize your mistake. Good thing we had Yelp to lead the way. Vegan friends in town staying with me and my partner - both carnivores. Craving breakfast. Enter Yelp and Hoja... and absolutely stunning food. The pictures alone on Yelp got our attention. And, sitting in the small eatery, every single plate being presented to each customer looked incredible and identical, for the same orders. With presentation, being consistent is a task in and of itself. And, the flavors - the spices, the colors. OMG. All so very good. Nothing too overwhelming, spice wise, that would detract from the overall dish. My partner ordered the Hoja Special and loved it so much that he literally got up and ordered another one. He was a bit overstuffed, but smiling, lol. I enjoyed the chilaquiles and could have easily had another bowl myself. I subbed the Verde salsa for the avocado salsa. Cooked beautifully. Really liked the tortilla chips hidden in and around my bowl of yumminess, too. Vegan and carnivore alike, we were all very pleased with each of our dishes. My guy and I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Food was awesome, service was awesome. Came here with my cousin for a breakfast burrito. Ordered, sat in the back patio, and they brought the food in about 12 mins. Burritos have a very authentic flavor that will make you wanna go back right away. I also got some fancy 6 or 7 dollar coffe that was really good. Try it, you'll like it. Staffers are friendly too. Will be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Cute Mexican brunch spot - great ambiance - fast service of food - boozy options such as margaritas - chicken tinga burrito was awesome!! Love the texture of the wrap and the flavor - don't recommend matcha latte. Pre-made in a batch with added agave. Not worth $5 - service was a plus! I sent my matcha latte back, and the waitress was accommodating and not taking offense. Thank you!
google avatar

Emily C.

Yelp
Seating is first come first serve. No reservations taken. There is outdoor seating in the front with no shade, limited indoor seating mostly for two, and covered patio seating in the back. They were busy when we got there at 12 but were super nice. I got the coffee de olla which was described as an hispanic latte to me~ it had an orange slice in it and a nutty flavor (cinnamon maybe?). Very pretty drink and good for those that like citrusy combo beverages. I wasn't a super fan but can imagine others loving it. The chilaquiles was delicious. The salad and radish mixture made it refreshing while the green salsa and egg made it comforting and warm. Portion was filling but super stuffed. Would come again for a beautiful Sunday morning.

Kambri P.

Yelp
Delicious down to earth local little spot with fresh, handmade food. Flavors were great! Service was kind and exceptional. Ambience is casual and comfortable.

Yelp
Hangry and impatient, we stumbled upon Hoja. As you walk in, the space is small but welcoming and the smells were INCREDIBLE! We opted for their front patio which was great as they're down the road from the farmer's market. (Hello people watching). The Michelada had great southwestern flavor and not too off the path of the traditional flavorings. It's topped with a pickled okra which I wish I had more than one because those were heavenly. The Tinga Tingler is packed with nice heat and finishes off with a smokey mole flavor. Don't worry, I'm drooling too while writing this. The breakfast quesadilla was just as tasty! Cheesy spicy goodness YES PLEASE! Looking forward to our return for their breakfast burrito and chilaquiles.
google avatar

Yelp
Filled with very simple food that's good for you. Come in and order 1st, then find the table. Dont forget about the back porch. It so secluded and relaxing feel to it. Last visit, I had matcha latte and you can feel the love from the staff. One of my favorite place to visit!

Brian K.

Yelp
This is my favorite breakfast spot in all of Plat park! The food is amazing and very tasty! The coffee is excellent and the staff makes you feel appreciated. If you love small locally owned cafes, this place has a nice welcoming vibe!
google avatar

Angela K.

Yelp
Unbelievable vegan food, literally. I developed several food allergies during chemo that mean eating at restaurants is difficult for me. Eating out for breakfast is basically impossible. I'm so happy to have a place that serves delicious food I can eat. I look forward to it every weekend. Thanks for existing!
google avatar

Max R.

Yelp
So this is an interesting and delicious take on a breakfast burrito. Very veggie forward and super fresh tasting. We got ours vegan with tofu and it was 10/10. We got all the works which again were unique to Hoja and it was not a mistake. I have been a few times since and they do not disappoint. It is definitely a bit more pricey than the standard breakfast burrito, but is worth it. Fresh ingredients and great taste!
google avatar

Kevin K.

Yelp
We visited for brunch, wife had the bfast-burrito, I opted for the chilaquiles. The burrito was right-sized (small enough to be eaten in a single meal but filling) with green chile and eggs. The chilaquiles were non-traditional with a single poached egg atop crispy tortilla wedges with cotija cheese, chile verde and gourmet arugula-based side salad. The regular coffee was delicious. The wait staff was 5 star, explaining how to order up front and then finding a table. They were very attentive once we were seated. 11 AM on a Sat was not overly crowded but the lunch customers were queueing up on the street when we left. We will go again to try some of the other interesting menu items.
google avatar

Alberto M.

Yelp
Very clean and fresh looking restaurant. The indoor dining looked small but there was a nice patio area that is dog friendly. The food options were good and the drinks were authentic. I was a bit conflicted at the price of their signature burrito when comparing it to the lack of savoriness. Perhaps next time I'll a different item off their menu and see if I can be swayed.
google avatar

Crissa P.

Yelp
Great flavors, friendly staff, and quaint little store/ restaurant. We waited only about 20 minutes for our food after ordering- great wait time for freshly prepared cuisine. They do have a few small tables inside but due to Covid restrictions, they are only offering outdoor seating (about 4 or 5 tables) and to go. Their gender neutral bathroom is super clean, well kept, and even has a space heater. We will be back!
google avatar

Nila S.

Yelp
Loved our experience here. The food was so delicious and felt like we were eating all fresh ingredients. The carnitas was so juicy and spicy. It's a smaller place but decorated beautifully. They also have seating outside in the back. The service was exceptional! Felt like everyone there was eager to help us and make us feel welcome.
google avatar

Rebeckah R.

Yelp
The food is so fresh and creative! Love the flavors. The portion sizes are perfect. Margarita was great! Will be back!

Yelp
Loved this hip spot my brother took me for breakfast! I ordered the vegan tofu scramble burrito which was huge and full of delicious veggies. Perfect amount of spice and super hearty. Absolutely perfect for this cold, dreary day! We did takeout and the service was great. The staff was very friendly and super helpful. Very clean and safe inside. Cool vibe with cacti and awesome lighting fixtures. Loved the ambiance! Also they have a refrigerator full of specialty items for the taking and would love to try their homemade tahini and salsas. They offer fresh cheeses, tortillas and veggies for those that might want to make their own tacos. Lots of variety on the menu with vegan/ vegetarian options. Prices were reasonable considering the high level of quality. Cool spot and would go back in a heartbeat!
