The Best Bakeries In SF

"When we're craving Portuguese-style egg tarts, there's only one spot we head to: Holy Nata. This tiny takeout window on the edge of Union Square churns out pastéis de nata with perfectly caramelized tops, flaky crusts that crunch so loudly they could set off a car alarm two blocks away, and a custardy center that oozes with each bite. While there are some unexpected flavors like Nutella and s'mores—which are solid— we're purists when it comes to these things and always go for the traditional version. Make sure to say yes to the complimentary dusting of cinnamon." - julia chen 1, lani conway, ricky rodriguez, patrick wong

The Best Bakeries in San Francisco | Eater SF

"Follow the smell of freshly baked pasteis de nata to a tiny space down a narrow downtown side street. That’s where you’ll find Holy Nata, which specializes in one thing and one thing only: hot and fresh Portuguese egg tarts. Owners Julia Pfeiffer and José Abreu both spent time living in Portugal and use a family recipe for their pastries, which typically sell out every day. The shop is open Tuesday through Friday and wise customers know to order ahead via text." - Dianne de Guzman

Holy Nata - Review - Financial District - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Holy Nata is a tiny takeout-only egg tart shop in FiDi that serves pastéis de nata so good they’ll compel you to build a shrine in their honor. We're talking perfectly caramelized tops, flaky crusts with a crunch loud enough to set off a car alarm, and a custardy center that oozes with each bite—you'll definitely end up wearing some on your shirt. There’s rotating flavors like Nutella and s'mores, but we're traditionalists when it comes to this Portuguese pastry—get the classic with a hit of cinnamon and preemptively ask for a dozen more. You can pre-order online to guarantee the flavors and quantities you want." - Ricky Rodriguez

Google
I’ve had my eye on this place for so long on my walks around the financial district, but never was able to get my hands on their egg tarts. That changed today with a little bit of luck and early rising so I went in and got a pack of 4 egg tarts, 2 classic and 2 pistachio. I was not ready for the creaminess and warmth in every bite, safe to say they were all really enjoyable. I would definitely recommend-visit just to try their other special flavors on the days those are available

Google
Best place in the city to get Portuguese Egg tarts that taste like they’re from Portugal! I went to Portugal last year and these definitely are comparable. They have a small store front and rotating flavors. You have to try their original, their pistachio is also real good, they’re actually all good!

January 2025: Stopped by for some Portuguese tarts. Read about this place in the news and was very excited to try these treats. Food is to go only. Tart was very creamy, rich, and smooth. Went very well with my coffee. I tried one with cinnamon and the rest without. I think the cinnamon adds a little extra kick! Got a four pack which saves a little money.

Google
This place is amazing. We came in and tried the traditional and the Nutella flavor. Both are great but I HIGHLY recommend the traditional. 12/10. Husband liked it so much we had to loop back for another 4 😅

Google
A heavenly piece of Portugal! I was walking back to the office after a dentist appointment when I saw a sign for Natas. I was curious, so I doubled back and went inside. The master was hard at work, and I could smell the delicious pastries wafting through the air. I ordered four Natas and took a bite of one right away. It was so good that I ordered another four before leaving! I had my first Nata in Portugal a few months ago and fell in love with them. These Natas are just as good as the ones I had in Lisbon and Porto. If you're in the San Francisco Financial District, be sure to stop by and try a couple of these delicious Portuguese delicacies. You won't be disappointed!

Google
Pastry is delicious, especially with its creamy filling. A little too sweet for me, but the kids liked it.

Google
Overall, this is a must-try if you like pastries or egg tarts. I found the texture contrast to be perfect: crispy on the outside, warm and soft on the inside. The flavor was well-balanced, not too sweet or buttery. I tried both the regular tart with cinnamon and the Nutella.

Google
Got a traditional to try and these little morsels of goodness were delicious! I can imagine them being a hit at any function!

Yelp
Hidden bakery for sure. If you see the Chase bank go behind it. We entered the lobby asking security how to get there and he was kind enough to point us in the right direction. (But he said most people can smell the bakery, it was too cold for me to use any of my super smelling powers unfortunately.) The bakery is very small, simple. They have 3 flavors of Portuguese Tart - custard, pistachio and a specialty which happened to be pumpkin spice when we came. We ordered 2 of each to try. The crust is super flaky and custard is like a creme brulee. A soft, toasted custard. If you eat Chinese egg tarts you will love these. The custard is much more softer and the crust lighter and crisp. The employee was also very customer service oriented. We told him just give us 6 of your best sellers but he took the time to explain the flavors and asked for confirmation to split the order amongst the 3 flavors. He labeled the box for us too. Highly recommend you hunt this place out!

Yelp
Crispy, silky egg tarts. They don't get soggy and still crunchy the next day. Make sure your add some cinnamon. So good. The pistachio flavored one was ok. I want to try the Nutella one next time.

Yelp
Tiny spot in an alleyway, and they only sell Portuguese egg tarts! There's basically no space inside except to order or pickup an order. I guess I'm a little biased to asian egg tarts, but these are tiny, creamy, and flaky! You could easily eat one of these in a bite, so I felt like $3.64 for one is quite steep.

Yelp
At first I was a nonbeliever and skeptical of the Holy one. I heard and seen all the hype and I had to determine if the Holy Nata was even a contender in the mass sea of endless egg tart options in San Francisco. There is something about these egg tarts which was different than the rest I had in San Francisco. The Holy Nata is located in the Trinity place alley in the FiDi. The Holy Nata has a Portuguese egg tart which tasted as if a custard, mochi, and pudding had created a tart. It also had a hint of an apple pie texture . It was a tasty creamy, savory , smooth and not too sweet treat. Holy Nata is very transparent about their tarts and they bake them in front of anyone who comes in to pick them up. Don't expect any ambience and seating to complement the delicious tarts which speaks for itself. The Holy Nata is in a league of its own. Come and have a Holy experience and have a egg tart with the Holy Nata taste It's located between Sutter and Montgomery streets in an alley at 8 Trinity place

Yelp
Whenever I go to our SF office, I've passed by Holy Nata signs and always wanted to stop by for Pastel de Nata, (Portuguese Egg Custard tart) but never got the opportunity until now. Holy Nata is located on Trinity place, an alley way between Bush St and Sutter St; and the best way to get here is by foot. Coming here reminded me so much of our visit to Lisbon, Portugal where there were a multitude of bakeries selling Pastel de Nata. This is a small store where you can only order to-go, no dine in. It's amazing to watch the bakers make this special pastry! That day, they were offering pumpkin spice and peanut butter flavors, that I had to try them with the original flavor. I find ordering multiples will get you the best value, they even give you a 4% discount when you pay cash. Service was fast, pastries were served warm. The staff even offered dusting my pastries with cinnamon which is the traditional way of having them. I ordered a pack of 6; the size of the pastry is good for 2-3 bites. The Pastel de Nata were the BOMB! No wonder Holy Nata is names one of SF's best bakeries! No need to travel to Portugal when you can get Pastel de Nata here. Highly recommend Holy Nata if ever in SF! Will definitely come back here again and time it on a Thursday when they have a special flavor on the menu.

Yelp
I stopped by after seeing Holy Nata on social media, and I am so, so, so glad I did! As a dan tat fan, I was very excited to try their related pastry. I ordered a box of 8 traditional Pastel de Nata, which was a little over $20 pre-tax/tip (plus they gave me an extra one just because, which was really nice of them). These pastries were incredible! The crust was so flaky, and the custard was smooth, airy, and slightly sweet. If any of the workers ask if you'd like the cinnamon dusting on top, always say yes! I'm looking forward to trying the other flavors in the future. This small shop is in an alleyway in the Financial District and it's pretty easy to miss. It is also a grab and go spot with no seating. There was no wait when I went (probably because it was raining so hard), but if there is a wait, online ordering is also available.

Yelp
These Portuguese egg tarts are soooooo good and creamy! It's not too heavy, and it's not too sweet! The crust is baked to perfection! You do have to come early as they do sell out pretty early! I remember coming by around 2:30-3pm one day and they already had a sign outside stating that they were sold out! Service is a hit or miss, I've had a nice cashier that assisted me and I've had one that wasn't so nice... maybe she was having a bad day or people kept going on even when they were sold out, not sure. Either way, still worth a try tho, it'll be worth it, and I'd still go back!

Yelp
Portuguese egg tarts (pastel de nata) seem a little difficult to come by in SF. Holy Nata's opening days are limited, currently open Tuesdays to Fridays. However if you get the chance to stop by, do it! The egg tarts are sweet and delicious with a beautifully flakey crust. Portion size is perfect for me as well, 2-3 bites a pastry and I can probably eat only 1-2 because they're quite rich. Service is super quick. If you go at opening, there's no line. But they also have an online order/pickup system to streamline things, and there's no seating so it's more a grab and go place.
google avatar

Yelp
I've been seeing this place all over social media and had to give it a try. It did not disappoint. The crust is really crispy and lightly salted balance out the sweetness from the filling. The custard filling is light but slightly sweet. I placed an order online and came to pick it up. The store is located in a nice and clean area, but it's not too big. The service was a bit slow, there were 3 people working in the front, but only one person was doing everything from confirming our orders, putting our pastries in the box, and charging us on the kiosk, maybe it was because there was no long line.

Yelp
4.5 STARS IMO, some of the most highly rated places tend to be the most disappointing places. Plus, too many things are hyped up by social media - I mean free food does hit different, does it not? Just sayin'! Holy Nata has been on my list since they opened last August 2023. They're only open during the weekdays and they don't offer delivery which makes it challenging to get to unless you work in the FiDi. M E N U Pastéis de Nata: Portuguese Egg Tarts ($3.64 each including tax). The more you purchase, the lower the price. 4% off if you pay cash. Special flavors available on Thursdays. Pre-order highly recommended to secure your tarts. P A S T É I S D E N A T A On the non-Thursday I visited, they had traditional and pistachio: https://tinyurl.com/yfaudwdw Optional: Traditional dusting of cinnamon (I opted out). * Traditional Pastel de Nata - Cross-section: https://tinyurl.com/bdzh57xm TBH, I thought this was going to be overhyped and overrated but I was wrong. They were bomb! The caramelized custard was warm, molten, and gooey reminiscent of crema catalana with citrusy and warming cinnamon notes. The deliciously creamy texture was a great contrast to the light, shatteringly crispy laminated pastry. As someone that grew up eating Chinese egg tarts, I didn't find them too sweet or too heavy (they're small two biters). Reheating TIP (from a baklava shop owner): Warm up the air fryer for 5 minutes at 400. Turn it off, then place the pastel de nata inside for 3-5 minutes. The carryover heat will crisp up the pastry layers while the custard remains gooey. The pastel de nata didn't taste as bomb reheated but it was still hella good. * Pistachio Pastel de Nata Delicious but I hardly tasted the pistachio. S E R V I C E Friendly (one cashier). A M B I A N C E Small takeout operation in an alley. P A R K I N G Do not recommend driving here - traffic and most street parking are yellow zones. Take public transit or a rideshare. Overall, Holy Nata is probably the best pastéis de nata you'll find in the bay (GGB makes the best HK style). IMO, it's sooooo much better than Pastelaria Adega's (SJ) which was too sweet and the pastry shell was too thin. Make that Uber/Lyft/Waymo ride worth it to Holy Nata by getting at least a dozen to share...or don't share. ;)

Yelp
Omg these Portuguese pasteles de nata (egg tarts) were fire! This bakery only has one location in SF and it's a tiny storefront hidden in an alleyway but definitely a hidden gem. They only sell the egg tarts and they are divine. The pastry shell is so crispy and flaky, and the custard filling is super creamy, smooth, and sweet! I liked the traditional the best (the pumpkin spice was good but a little too sweet for me). Will definitely drop by for a treat whenever I'm nearby when it's open (at the time of this review it's only open weekdays)! It seems that they used to mainly take preorders but now are able to service walk-ins like me.

Yelp
When I visited Macau, the Portuguese egg tarts were one of my favorite bites. This spot has been on my list for a while and I finally had time to make the trek over. I walked in, ordered, and received my tart within minutes. Traditional Pastel de Nata ($3.50 w/cash): +Addition of cinnamon on top added warmth & complexity to the custard. -Custard was quite liquidy & sweet: Reminded me of crème anglaise. -Even though it was warm, the tart shell was slightly chewy and not as flaky as I expected. Side notes: 1.) If you're paying cash, make sure you tell the cashier so that the 4% discount will be applied to your purchase. 2.) Takeout only: If you're looking for somewhere to eat, the Crocker Galleria is just a 3-minute walk away. *Verdict: I'm glad I finally tried it, but I don't think I'll return since I prefer a flakier crust with a custard that's thicker & more balanced.

Yelp
I highly recommend this place! Holy Nata's pasteis de Nata might be not as good as Pasteis de Belem in Lisboa, Portugal. But they are %#$@ good! I've had some of the original & some of the nutella, even though the nutella was good but the original is where I'm coming for next time over and over again. The crust was soft but crispy and flaky but chewy at the same time. The custard was creamy, pudding like and not too sweet. Very tasty! Friendly service, bright and clean pastry shop. Location is kinda hidden on the alley behind Chase Bank on Sutter Street. Find it, it will be worth it.
google avatar

Milind L.

Yelp
One of the best Portuguese egg tart I've had. And I've been to Portugal. The egg tart is pure perfection in taste and texture. It's delightfully crispy and the custard is perfectly rich and sweet. It was so good I went back immediately to get a second one, something I rarely ever do. An absolute must get if you love egg tarts and crispy pastries as much as I do. Very fast service too. They make it in front of you. Cute modern, tiny interior space.

Yelp
The location is hidden in an alleyway across from Barry's Bootcamp but when you walk in, you can smell the delicious pastries being baked. I ordered a dozen pastel de Natas: 3 traditional, 3 pumpkin spice, and 3 Nutella. When they offer to sprinkle on cinnamon, take them up on their offer! My favorite has got to be the traditional followed by the pumpkin spice and Nutella. The traditional was a delicious custard wrapped in a crispy tart pastry. The Nutella was a lot more rich, but it was not my favorite. Service was fast and the cashier was able to make recommendations. They were super friendly as well. I would definitely be coming back to grab something sweet after lunch.
google avatar

Amy L.

Yelp
I've walked by Holy Nata multiple times before going to class at Barry's FiDi, but haven't had the chance to actually try. I was in the area for work and thankfully they had lots in stock for walk-in orders! No seating and it's a pretty small bakery, so take them home or to the office to share. I'm so glad I was able to pick some up--I got a box of 3 regular pasteis de nata and 3 nutella flavored ones. They were so delicious! Probably the best Portuguese eggs tarts I've ever tried. I tried both flavors while fresh/hot and also later at room temp. They were just as good :) Excited to try their other rotational flavors in the future!

Yelp
Holy Nata has been on my list to try for awhile now and I am so so glad I got to try it because I will be coming back very often!! My first bite..I was speechless!! It was perfectly warm and freshly baked and custard melts in your mouth. The flavor is perfect and they have new flavors every week!!! I can't wait to come back and get even more!! This was so delicious!! The shop itself is pretty small but you see the bakers putting the pastry together in the back, it was so cute! Definitely will be back more often!

Yelp
I've never had a Portuguese Egg Tart before, but these were AMAZING! I passed by this location and saw a line out the door, which intrigued me. The store is located in an alleyway in the heart of the Financial District. It's a small spot with no seating--more of a grab-and-go place--but the line out the door caught my attention, and I had to check it out. My coworker was shocked when he found out I had never heard of Holy Nata and insisted I try it. I ended up trying the Pastel de Nata and the special Pumpkin-flavored one. Both were delicious--I was mind-blown when I took my first bite of each. If I had to choose, I'd go with the original over the pumpkin. I love the cinnamon-y flavor, and the pumpkin wasn't as strong as I would've liked. The crust of the egg tarts was so flaky too. I would definitely come back and would love to introduce Holy Nata to my friends as well. I want to try their other flavors like the pistachio and peanut butter. I also love that they release new flavors every week to add a twist to the original tart. So glad I found out about this spot!

Yelp
The best things are usually stumbled upon on accident right? This was a mix of both accident and word of mouth. I had heard about Holy Nata from a simple yelp search when it first opened. On my strolls to work, I would crave pastries. Little did I know that this gem was on my way to work. One day I saw the light lit outside on the street and was excited to come in. Immediately the customer service was 100%. I was already looking forward to my next time to come in. I made it a tradition to come in twice a month. I had a few days a month where I had to go out into the market. I would make this my reward after a hard day work. It first started with one order. Then eventually I ordered a separate box for the office. I loved posting these on my social accounts and seeing people share their experiences. Cannot wait to get my hands on these again when I'm back in the states. Thank you Luna and Julia!
google avatar

Camila Y.

Yelp
Preorder ahead of time if you're thinking about buying a lot at a time! Quality - good Tastes creamy and not overly sweet. Price - okay Pasteis size is pretty small for it being $3.64 each individually. Recommend buying a batch of at least 24 so it'd be $2.34/pasteis Parking - not good, street only This is tucked in between an alley so parking is only on the street and very limited. Walk or have someone drop you off if you can!
google avatar

Clara M.

Yelp
Holy Nata is a must visit in the Financial District in SF. A small unassuming shop tucked in between two streets, its such a simple yet perfect place. The Pastel de Nata are incredible. My personal favorite are the Nutella filled, but all of the flavors are incredible, including the classic that really tastes as authentic and delicious as pastel de natas from Portugal. I'd definitely recommend grabbing a box if you work in the area and bringing them to work, they disappear in a few minutes !
google avatar

Rita W.

Yelp
Now that I know Holy Nata is down the alley from my office... not sure if that's a good thing or not because the temptation of a fresh Portuguese egg tart can be satisfied within 5 minutes after several steps and around $4 poorer. Anyways, it's great that they sell out a lot so I don't get as tempted, but they do take pre orders! My coworker introduced me to these. She brought some in the office once and wow, I was super impressed with how they were still warm! Definitely taste a bit different and better than other Portuguese egg tarts I've had in the Bay. Each one had an amazing pastry crust that was rich, buttery, semi flaky, but not the leave a mess kind of flaky. The custard in there wasn't overly sweet and was "brûlée-d" a good amount. Not all consistent in looks, but ratios to custard and pastry was pretty consistent. They also have seasonal flavors, such as Nutella as well as pistachio around this season (July/August 2024). Haven't tried those yet, but soon! Their original is so great, perfect with a cup of coffee. You also have the option to add cinnamon to those as well. Def amazing when warm and I'm glad they are warm when served and that they stay warm for a bit. Just don't let them stay in the sealed box for too long, otherwise they can get soggy. Still good that way though, but a crispy warm one tastes and feels better. Box of 4 is around $11 and a box of 6 is close to $16, both rounded up as of summer 2024. Not too bad for these things. Holy Nata specialized in these Portuguese egg tarts, and don't have much else here. Not a bad thing, but it isn't a typical specialty coffee and multiple pastries / stay and study type of cafe. Order your egg tarts, pay/pick up, and be on your way. Very different than bake cheese tart in both the filling and crust textures, and different than the Chinese egg tarts. I do like the Portuguese ones a bit more!
google avatar

Helen C.

Yelp
Having recently visited Lisbon/Porto, I can tell you Holy Nata is seriously right up there with the best pastel de Nata places in Portugal!! The original is honestly the best. I've also had the Nutella special, which was good, and the Pistachio, which unfortunately was a miss in my opinion. The pistachio was a paste in the center but it was not sweet so to me took away from the egg tart. They are small (as they are in Portugal too) so get at least a box of 6. Plus pricing for each one gets cheaper and cheaper as you buy more! I only wish they opened over the weekend so I could get it more often, but then again, maybe it's good for my waistline that it's not more accessible.
google avatar

Sandee L.

Yelp
The custard was so silky and creamy! Unfortunately, the flaky pastry was super chewy. Probably because they were not fresh out of the oven and endured a couple hours of transport to the East Bay. I heard they are bomb when they're still warm. Maybe they'd get a good second life in the air fryer. If I'm ever in the area, I'd definitely stop by to try a fresh warm one!
google avatar

Miranda L.

Yelp
Heard a lot about them on social media and was very excited to try. The location is on a small side road and the inside is pretty tight. Ordered at the counter and the staff told us that on Thursday, they have a special flavor in addition to the original. Original, Nutella (Special) - The pastry has a custard on the inside and some of the crunchiest and flakiest crust I've ever had. It was a little too sweet for me but it is made so well and the best when fresh. The nutella added another level of flavor and became more balanced in sweetness. The box of 6 that I purchased was 15.60 and the tarts were a smaller size but pretty worth it for the taste. Definitely looking forward to trying some of their other special flavors.
google avatar

Francina L.

Yelp
First time trying Portuguese egg tarts and they did not disappointment. I had seen them all over my social media but didn't want to grab some so close to the end of the day. I walked in on a Friday around 12pm. A little store front in an alley. When I walked in, the lady at the register greeted me. I told her I had never tried them before and wanted to grab 4. She told me since I hadn't tried them I should try half with cinnamon. She gave me a little to go box and when I got home they were still super warm. First bite, you good taste the flakiness of the tart and the gooey of the custard, so good!
google avatar

Sinchay P.

Yelp
Truly a sweet holy gem! I made an order in the store for the new batch that was soon to come out and I was not disappointed with the short wait They were so decadent with the soft warmth of the custard. The owner was very lovely and recommended to have a few with cinnamon on top Which gave it that nice touch cinnamon spice that wasn't overpowering the flavor. Can't wait to return for more!
google avatar

Vee V.

Yelp
I'm rarely impressed, but Holy Nata completely blew my mind! These are hands down the best Portuguese egg tarts I've ever had--so creamy and perfectly balanced with that crisp, flaky crust. If you haven't tried one yet, you're seriously missing out! You have to add this to your sf itinerary.
google avatar

Tina S.

Yelp
Coworker brought a dozen to the office. Tried the one topped with cinnamon. Oh my... it was delicious. The custard was so creamy, but would've been perfect if it was a silkier and smoother texture (just personal preference). The crust stayed crispy (probably a few hours later). MMmm mMmm mMm. I grew up only having Macau styled Portuguese egg tarts, so when I had my first and only Portuguese egg tart in San Jose and did not appreciate it, my first instinct was that my palette was just not used to it. After trying this one, my mind has totally been changed. Cannot wait to go back and try the other flavors.
google avatar

Lynn C.

Yelp
Hole in the wall serving one thing, pastel de nata, and they're AMAZING! Some days they sell out early so best to go earlier in the day! They also have a limited special flavor on Thursday!
google avatar

Ann M.

Yelp
Is it called Holy Nata because when you walk out with your warm, cinnamon-duster custard tart and take a bite, you go "Holy s$!&, this is so good!"? I can't imagine regretting your choice to try one of these.
google avatar

Adam T.

Yelp
Wow! Stumbled upon this wonderful bakery, which is just blocks from my office. They specialize in Portuguese egg tarts, one of my favorite desserts! When they asked whether I'd like cinnamon on top, I was quite pleased. The egg tarts were packed with flavor and flaky. While the bakery didn't have seating, it was the perfect grab n go spot. Looking forward to returning!
google avatar

Yelp
Overall, this is a must-try if you like pastries or egg tarts. I found the texture perfect: crispy on the outside and warm and soft on the inside. The flavor was well-balanced, not too sweet or buttery. I tried both the regular tart with cinnamon and the Nutella. The service was excellent; she was very friendly and helpful. The shop is tiny with no seating inside. Expect to take out. If you want to eat at the store, expect to be sitting outside on the one-way sidewalk.

Yelp
The last time I had a Portuguese tart was when I visited Macau.it was delicious and I figured to get that quality, I will just need to visit again. Then there was Holy Nata. It's a small bakery tucked in an alley way in the SF's FiDi district. It's hard to know this shop is there unless you are looking for it deliberately. When you enter the shop, you are greeted with the buttery sweet scent in the air and of course the shop keeper. The pasteis de nata here were smaller than the ones I had in Macau but just as delicious! The custard at Holy Nata was creamy and smooth, not eggy at all. I feel like there is a sweet cinnamon-y taste, somewhat like a churro flavor. The ratio of filling to shell is perfect. There was no soggy mess nor was it too doughy. The tart shell was beautifully layered, crisp and flaky. When you bite into the tart, the custard oozes a bit but doesn't spill out. Incredible mouthfeel of the delicate buttery crispy shell and the warm custard. In Thursdays, they apparently do Nutella and peanut butter flavor pasteis de nata so definitely check out it.

Yelp
I came back from Portugal and was delighted to find this store in San Francisco. Delicious egg custards. I like the ones that are a little more burnt for their flavor. You can also get cinnamon sprinkled on them. Lady at the register was very friendly and joyful.

Yelp
Went on a Friday morning around 10am and had no line! It was a little difficult to find as we didn't realize it was in an alleyway/small side road. We got both the Nutella and Traditional flavors. We ordered about 14 of them, some sprinkled with cinnamon on top and they were all delicious. I didn't realize they were a bit more on the runny side, but they were still good! They are on the sweeter side so those with a sweet tooth will enjoy it more.

Yelp
Summary: Rich, flaky delights for those with a sweet tooth Details: I've always been rather fond of Portuguese egg tarts, in spite of how rich and dense they are, having grown up eating many a one in various Chinese bakeries. And, there's the rub of it: I've never really had an authentic/traditional one, and find myself in a tough spot trying to reconcile the ones at Holy Nata against the ones I've had all my life. The pastels de nata here are RICH: buttery, flaky crusts encasing a fairly sweet and slightly gelatinous custard, with an optional cinnamon dusting on top. They're on the smaller side than one may be used to with a Chinese egg tart, but given how rich these are, I actually found the portion sizing to be about right, never actually wanting a second one until much, much later. Personally, I prefer the more Asian take on these, with a slightly creamier and less gelatinous custard, and a bit light on the sugar. For those who like their desserts sweeter, richer, and denser though, they're certainly worth a try! Walk-in orders are accepted, but pre-order online if you don't want to try your luck. Accessibility: Small shop, but accessible considering all you're doing is popping in for pickup and leaving, as there's no seating inside.

Yelp
If you love Portuguese egg tarts, you must try this place. TASTE: Warm tarts baked throughout the day (so they're fresh even at the end of the day) with a surprisingly crispy crust. The custard is liquid gold and you can request for the tart to be topped off with a dusting of cinnamon (which I'd recommend). I spoke to the cashier and she told me that they do serious quality control on their tarts and won't sell any tarts that don't meet their standard. COST: They're $3.50 each, or you can get boxes of 4-6 at $10-$15. If this is your first time.... you should probably get a box because you'll be going back for more if you only get one :)

Yelp
Made a pre-order of traditional egg tarts - very good. Also a good way to ensure you can get your desired amount, especially on busy days. My order was confirmed the next day and was ready early the day of pick up. Service is friendly. Their space is small, so you'll have to find somewhere outside to eat. It's also a bit hidden, but they're in the alley behind the 101 Montgomery building. Definitely coming back soon.

Yelp
These are the closest pasties de nata that we've found to the ones we had in Portugal! Parking can be tough around here, but it's worth planning ahead for it. Pre-ordering online made the process even smoother and I was in and out within minutes! Add some cinnamon on top and these were amazing. Although I picked these up at the end of the day, they still tasted freshly baked and the crust was perfectly flaking and inside was soft and warm.

Yelp
Small little shop tucked behind Chase and near Barry's. I preordered on their website around 10am for a pickup at 12:30. I got a text that my order was ready at 12:17 and I was able to pick up my order earlier. The tarts come out warm, but I was told that you can eat it at room temperature. It's also best not to reheat if you've added the cinnamon on top. As for the tart itself, it has a very flaky exterior. The inside is more of a thicker/creamy custard compared to the eggy ones you get at Chinese bakeries. Not too sweet at all, and the tarts are palm sized or smaller. Delicious overall! I was able to get 4 for $10. I would love to come back and even try their Nutella version.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this place but couldn't due to their limited days and hours. Its tough for someone who isn't from SF. I happen to be in the area for an impromptu lunch and decided it was faith to try out this place. It's a very small store front in an alley that fits maybe four customers. There are no seats inside and you just order togo. They do not have any egg tarts upon walk in. It is strongly recommended to make an order ahead of time on their website. I made an order for 6 for $15 which ended up being $15.60 after a 4% mandate. 1 is $3.50, 4 for $10, 6 for $15, and 24 for $54. I was told they'd be ready in 45 mins. I ended up getting a text that my order was ready for pick up 10 minutes after I ordered. The tarts were quite small. The box in my picture is a standard half size togo box that restaurants provide. Though small, these tarts are quite delicious. The crust is very flaky. The custard isn't as solid like Chinese egg tarts. The added cinnamon is a nice touch.

Yelp
We got super lucky yesterday because it was Thursday and they have special flavors on Thursdays! And they happened to have extras for walk ins. It was so good we decided to stop by for more today (regular flavor). If you're able to order ahead and try their different flavors, definitely do this.

Yelp
Hot tip: reserve online for pickup (it's free!) so you can guarantee availability I finally tried my first pasteis de nata and it was delicious! I dropped in randomly once before and was disappointed to hear they were out and that the next batch would only be available in 1.5 hours, so this time I played it smarter and reserved online two days beforehand. I dropped by Thursday around 4:30 pm to pick up my 6 egg tarts. Parking in this area is VERY hard to find, so I recommend coming with someone else if possible so they can stay in the car while you run in quickly to pick up. It's a tiny storefront that's takeout only with no seating. I paid $15.60 for a box of 6, which works out to $2.60/egg tart. You can opt to have cinnamon sprinkled on top, which I did for half of the egg tarts. I brought the egg tarts to dinner with friends and we all tried one. Obviously they had cooled down by then, but they were still very delicious. I've never had a pastel de nata before, but they were very creamy and completely different from the Chinese egg tarts I'm used to. Not too sweet either. I'm not in downtown SF a ton, especially not during weekday work hours, so I think it'll be a while before I can eat them again, but I'm glad I was able to try them out!

Yelp
It took me a bit and a half to develop a half-dozen-a-week Holy Nata habit. I've died and gone to Pastry Heaven. The outside shell is light and crispy and the filling is custardy-sweet without being overdone. If you're close and they're open right now, treat yourself. They do one thing and they do it to perfection. Fresh everyday. I haven't over-stated it. Go! Now!

Yelp
I stopped by to get one of their Portuguese Egg Tarts. This is their only menu item along with some coffee and espresso options. The lady at the desk was very nice and service was quick. The tarts themselves are the best I've had. Unlike typical egg tarts which are firmer, their filling is closer to the texture of pudding. They also offer cinnamon which I thought was a great touch. I will definitely be back!

Yelp
Holy Nata is delicious and I am extremely happy that they have opened up in San Francisco. The way that they bake their egg tarts are foreign to me as the consistency is not as firm as what I am accustomed to. I quite enjoy how silky the egg is as it is blanketed in a warm flaky crust. Amazing! I would say one thing I wasn't too fond of was the fact that there was a bit too much cinnamon sprinkled on the top but it was bearable. I do recommend preordering from here to guarantee you get some especially if you have a large order.

Yelp
I got one egg tart with cinnamon during a work event, and it was so good--creamy and sweet with a crispy shell. It's honestly the best Portuguese egg tart I've had. The cinnamon was balanced, not too strong, which added just the right touch. I'd highly recommend it and would definitely come back to buy more here again.

Yelp
Best Portuguese tarts in town! Everyone must try! Call and reserve in advance! If you are dying to try, call to have them hold some for you. They are super nice and offer that. Usually by 12 or no, they sell out. Depends on the day of course but best be safe than sorry. Super cute inside, but no seating! It's a pick-up-and-go-spot. My fave are with cinnamon top, they ask you, but if you don't like that then have them plain. Try both!
