A cozy, rustic cafe serving up the best Texas-inspired breakfast tacos and queso, perfect for grabbing a bite with friends or nursing a hangover.
"This small Los Feliz restaurant (that also has locations in Highland Park, Pasadena, West Adams, and Playa Vista) serves some of the best Tex-Mex we’ve encountered in the city. People line up for their queso, migas, and most importantly, breakfast tacos. It all starts with their excellent flour tortillas, which come loaded with bacon, potatoes, eggs, cheese, beans, and shredded brisket. What you’ll get is an excellent breakfast, ideal for a mid-morning snack or to magically bring you back from the brink of hangover death at 2pm on a Saturday. Food Rundown Queso Queso is a key reason why Tex-Mex holds a place in our hearts, and Homestate does it right. Make sure you order it “loaded,” and please sign our petition for the restaurant to make “loaded” your only option. It’s for the good of everyone. Migas We recommend the Lonestar Migas, which adds in a good amount of brisket on top of the warm and filling migas: eggs scrambled with corn strips, onion, and cheese. Tacos As far as breakfast tacos go, we love the Comal (black beans, eggs, Monterey jack), the Pecos (egg and brisket), and the Trinity (eggs, bacon, cheddar, potato) - but you really can’t go wrong. The lunch menu has a few highlights as well: the brisket and chicken tacos are both solid choices, with a great cabbage slaw on top. Buñuelos In A Bag Light, airy, and sweet. Take a few bites first, in case you fill up on the queso and can’t get to them after." - Michael Burke
"And it’s officially coming to LA next week to celebrate HomeState, an Austin-style breakfast taco specialist, that turns 10 years old this year. As for next week’s collab, dubbed the Franklin, expect Franklin Barbecue’s smoked brisket that’s chopped and then finished with garlic tallow on the plancha. It’s served with Vital Farms pasture-raised scrambled eggs, cheddar, and chile de arbol salsa in HomeState’s celebrated flour tortilla. The brisket breakfast taco will only be available in person at HomeState’s original location at 4624 Hollywood Boulevard, so expect lines, just like at Franklin Barbecue." - Matthew Kang
"This lively little taco stand is all about inhaling a few tacos with friends before the tortillas dissolve in your hands. Hungover or not, you'll inhale these tacos with tortillas handmade to perfection. Start a perfect day with their "Trinity"—eggs, bacon, potato and cheese. The best things in life are simple, especially paired in a winning combination with Southern hospitality and speedy, smiley service. Bonus: the Highland Park location now serves some of the best margaritas in town." - Hugh Garvey, Celeste Moure, Krista Simmons
"Tell us about your first impressions when you arrived. Half down home Texas hospitality, half hipster hangover spot. What was the crowd like? This lively little taco stand is all about inhaling a few tacos with friends before the tortillas dissolve in your hands. What should we be drinking? You can’t go wrong with a spicy paloma, a margarita or ranchwater (tequila, combier, topo chico and lime). In fact, other than a couple of beer options, those are the only cocktails on the menu. Main event: the food. Give us the lowdown—especially what not to miss. The place to get your fix of Texas-style breakfast tacos or a dose of queso. The tortillas are all handmade to perfection—the "trinity" version made with eggs, bacon, potato, and cheddar cheese is not to be missed. And how did the front-of-house folks treat you? Service is speedy and smiley with that touch of Southern hospitality. Not to mention, the women making the tortillas deserve their own separate 20 percent for their mastery of the masa. What’s the real-real on why we’re coming here? The place to get your fix of Texas-style breakfast tacos and most delicious hangover cure." - Krista Simmons
"Texas’ greatest invention - and one of the all-time greatest food inventions - is without a doubt the breakfast taco. And Homestate is without a doubt the best place to find them in LA. Don’t leave without also adding a Topo Chico and a side of queso to your order." - katherine lewin
