The 37 Best Restaurants in Milan

"Open for: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner Price range: $$$$ Located a few steps from the bustling, touristy Piazza Duomo, Horto provides an ethereal escape, nestled on a rooftop with a view of the dome of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. Chef Alberto Toè, under the guidance of Norbert Niederkofler, gained one Michelin star less than two years after opening the place. Outdoor tables are surrounded by a garden that provides the kitchen with plenty of ingredients, furnishings and finishes are made of natural and recycled materials, and a hyperlocal ethos drives the kitchen team, who source ingredients within an hour of Milan. A la carte selections and tasting menu highlights include pumpkin and beet carpaccio, pine-marinated beef with barbecued sunchokes, and oxtail raviolo in celeriac broth and parsley oil. Must-try dish: Don’t miss the yogurt with persimmons, carrots, and Campari for dessert." - Elizabeth De Filippo-Jones

Horto

"Norbert Niederkofler’s arrival in Milan is accompanied by his strong commitment to the environment. The cuisine here is in the capable hands of Alberto Toè, who offers two tasting menus with a focus on locally sourced ingredients (all from within an hour of the city). The outdoor terraces are an added attraction, boasting fine views which extend from the Duomo to the Castello Sforzesco, and are the perfect setting for an aperitif from the restaurant’s extensive cocktail list. The interior dining room has a simple yet elegant feel thanks to its natural-wood tables, making it a good choice for a gourmet supper or a simpler and more casual lunch." - Michelin Inspector

The New Business Traveler: For Google's Ivy Ross, Shopping in Milan Is a ‘Breakaway Fun Module’

"The best thing I ate was probably a delicious pasta with vegetables in sauce, from a restaurant called Horto. I loved every minute of it, knowing that I probably wouldn't have pasta again for another year."

A Design Lover's Guide to Milan

"Recently opened Horto should also be on your list, and not just for the great Duomo views. Boasting contemporary design vibes and a sustainability-forward menu, the restaurant proposes a low-impact, environmentally forward approach to both its food and interiors."

Went there for breakfast. Small menu with the basic options. Good coffee. The pastry of the day was ok. Good eggs Benedict but maybe more sauce is needed. No available fresh juices. Service was friendly but very slow as the hostess was also the waitress. Nice venue with a/c. Indoor and outdoor seating with a view.

In terms of positives, this was easily one of the best and most unique meals I’ve had in one of the most beautiful settings - each dish in the 5-course tasting was unique, flavourful and delicious. The portions are well-sized and we were satiated by the end. The ambiance is really stunning, the views from the terrace are stunning and the decor inside is minimalist and beautiful. Unfortunately the service was a big miss - 1. Upon arrival, we asked to be seated outside, to which they said no as all the tables were supposedly booked - only none of them got filled for the rest of the night and no offer was made to change our table, which started our night on a poor note (they said they had last minute cancellations, though it’s a bit odd for that to be the case for every table) 2. It took 2 hours for us to receive our first course (we arrived at 8 PM and received our first course at ~9.40 PM), and we weren’t given any warning or heads up as to the timing. While we understand fine dining is meant to be leisurely, this was a bit much and we should’ve been informed at the start so we knew what to expect (we ended up leaving at midnight) 3. There was a piece of plastic in my dessert that I luckily noticed before taking a bite and they were able to replace - the staff apologised and compensated my drinks for the night, but it was still a miss for a place of this calibre (and undoubtedly a health and safety concern). The manager of the night, Oscar, was lovely and took as best care of us as he could, even contacting me after the dinner to apologise for our experience (which is why I’ve given them 2 stars for service). All in all, we loved the food and the ambiance, though there definitely need to be improvements to its service levels to ensure the meal is worth it.

This was one of the most memorable dining experiences I've had! From the absolutely amazing service to the equally good food this was a meal I will be thinking about for a while. Lorenzo was our waiter and he went above and beyond. Our group had some dietary restrictions and he accommodated on the fly as well as giving an attention to detail I rarely have experienced. He recommended other local cuisines for us to try as well as giving us in depth explanations of the fermentation and produce sourcing that Horto follows. He absolutely helped make this meal truly special and would not have been the same without him. I also want to call out Claudia who gave us her recommendations and was extremely attentive throughout the night. Can't recommend this place enough - especially for vegetarians. Bonus if you can sit at the chefs table. It truly made it special to see each course being prepped.

Clean, stylish decor, an outdoor seating area and a central location make this eatery a nicer place to relax than to eat in. Dishes were heavily sauced, meats were on the chewy side and servings of wine by the glass - while well chosen - were a bit skimpy.

Had a fabulous dinner, Alfredo was extremely friendly and helpful throughout the meal and his team made us feel warm and welcome. In my email I explained that we are celebrating a special occasion so I want the dinner to be perfect, and they went above and beyond by serving us not one but two complimentary desserts, apart from the one on the courses. Super impressed and had a memorable evening

If you’re a serious foodie or epicurean, then this is the place for you. Very expensive, but worth the price if you like to push the palate. The wine pairing was one of the best I’ve ever had, so I highly recommend doing the full experience. Service was excellent and explanations were carefully articulated in English. They even let us substitute one of the dishes on the 7 course tasting menu for my wife. A must stop if you enjoy the best of the best.

Horto was my most disappointing meal of the year, especially in Milan. excellent service and ambiance, but just a total disaster on the food (which is obviously the most crucial part). the lunch tasting menu opened up beautifully, but left us consecutively disappointed with the risotto, trout (incredibly bland), and the worst dessert I’ve ever had. this restaurant has all the potential in the world, and will likely be great some day, but in the meantime is an exceptional disappointment. if you’re looking with a terribly overpriced and lackluster tasting menu devoid of flavor, then this restaurant is for you.
