House of Bread was almost one of those flukes that I found while driving pass it on a previous trip to the Denver area. I was riding in the passenger seat looking out the window when the sign caught my eye as we drove past this bakery. When I looked it up and saw that the reviews were solid and that the photos were helpful in determining what they had on the menu, I was sold. I bookmarked and vowed I would attempt to try their pastries on my next visit to Denver. Well, I did just that, and I just had to share how great this place is.
My dad opted not to drive to the bakery with me and my mom, so mom and I had a little breakfast date. My mom was always interested in world cuisines from growing up in Houston, but sometimes finding ethnic bakeries is tough in a place like Denver. My mom was so overwhelmed with all of the pastries and delectables on their menu, that she left it up to me to order our morning eats. I chose the Napoleon, which originates from France, but plenty of Mediterranean cultures also eat it. I also ordered us a made-to-order Kachipuri.
Kachipuri is one of those Eastern European/Mediterranean dishes that hasn't quite gained popularity just yet in the US, but I have a feeling it will become one of the next "it" foods to try for those looking to broaden their worldly culinary appetites. For those who have not yet tried this dish, it is like having a pizza crust in the shape of a flat wide boat with cheese and eggs cooked on top. There are plenty of toppings that can be added, but I'm a bit of a purist and prefer my Kachipuri with no additional toppings. It was my mom's first experience with this dish, and it was love at first bite for her. She was in heaven being a cheese and bread lover. There's no wrong way to eat this dish, but I prefer to mix the egg and cheese up to create more of a "cheese sauce" texture and taste; to each their own.
After eating through about half of it (Kachipuri's are pretty big), we dived into the Napoleon. Oh my goodness; one of the best I've had (sorry Paris, I still love you). It was like a traditional French Napoleon pastry made love to a piece of baklava. The pastry was lighter and flakier than any of the French Napoleons I've had, but still had the right balance of pastry to cream filling. Absolutely outstanding and worth purchasing even if it's for a takeaway purchase.
While I didn't catch the name of the employee who waited on us, she was friendly, knowledgeable about the bakeries products, professional, and kind to everyone who walked in. She was also the barista, because I ended up going back to the counter to order a chai...I forgot because I was so caught up with the pastry displays. The chai was equally good with lots of cinnamon sprinkled over the top.
Parking is easy, getting in and out is a little more of a challenge, and while the location might not work for some people, it worked great for us since we were on our way to the Cherry Creek area for a bit of shopping. I think this is a great addition to the Denver area and I hope that they continue to flourish in their business. I am a fan, and after mom and I enjoyed a breakfast together, she said that she was definitely returning without me to order pastries, cakes, and even the Kachipuri. I may have introduced her to a new dish, but I have my mom to thank for my love of world cuisines.
