Best Pizza Restaurants in Phoenix, Arizona | Eater Phoenix

"This tiny, charming pizzeria with patio has been turning out terrific Neapolitan-style pizza since 2012, recently expanding to a second location with larger digs in downtown Phoenix. Both venues feature over 20 pies with crispy, charred crusts, made from pizza dough that includes 20 percent organic wheat, which lends structure, color and taste. Can’t handle the wheat? Il Bosco also offers gluten-free crusts and vegan cheese. There’s also a take-home kit (dough ball, red sauce, mozzarella, pepperoni, choice of two additional toppings, plus instructions) for DIY pies." - McConnell Quinn

Really great pizza. The ravioli appetizer is $10 and you only get 5 raviolis though. You should get 7-10 raviolis in my opinion. Laid back atmosphere, casual setting, including indoor & outdoor seating (with some water misters). I would try it again.

Google
Very good wood fired pizza. The crust is crispy and light. Friendly and fast service as well. Highly recommended and will be back to try their other pizzas.

Google
this place was perfect. the pizza tasted really good. the crust and bottom had the perfect amount of crisp to it. you could taste everything. and the outside seating was nice. definitely spacious despite looking cramped

Made a reso at the bar. Two seats were waiting for us as promised. Pizza was amazing. Service was great too. Can’t wait to go back!

Google
This has become our favorite wood fired pizza restaurant. We don’t live in Scottsdale, but this is where we eat when in the area. The restaurant interior is small, but they have a large patio with umbrellas. Our favorite pizza is the “ZA”, which is slightly spicy and very flavorful with a hint of honey. Excellent! We usually also try another pizza, like the Lucia or Katarina. The staff have always been attentive, and they have a good selection of drinks to go with your food.

One Mans Truth

Google
We went there with high expectations and had a pepperoni pizza. Basically flavorless. The cheese is incredibly bland and the pizza is small....6 slices not the customary 8. We took two slices home to see if it tasted any better later when we heated it up and it was worse. Really wanted to like this place but it simply wasn't possible.

Google
The atmosphere is very nice, chill & relax. The flavors are simple delicious, the taste for me were very natural. Very nice experience to have a great, casual and relax moment with partner or friends. Very intimate as well. Simply Love it! We come back for sure! Thank you!

Google
Sat out on the front patio. Nice atmosphere and pretty good service. We split a chop salad and a Lucia pizza. The salad was dressed well with good soprasata. The pizza was tremendous. A great crispy crust complimented by a nice tangy red sauce with the perfect amount of cheese. The sausage and mushrooms were delicious. Accompanied by the Il Bosco Crispy Lager it was a great meal!

Yelp
Il Bosco has arguably the best pizza in AZ! I normally go with the ZA, but my daughter and I were sharing tonight so we opted for Pepperoni with Burrata which was amazing! The staff is always extremely friendly and we were lucky enough to have perfect patio weather tonight for dinner. Sadly, we no longer live in AZ, but love stopping in whenever we visit and this was the first stop of our trip this time out! Already looking forward to coming back for more!

Yelp
Context: we ordered pick up! I will say we had four pizzas (two gf and two regular) ready for pick up 15-20 minutes after ordering which was amazingly fast. Props for that! My dad picked it up so I didn't get to see the interior and ambiance, so I'm basing this off of my food alone. The gf pizza... I was disappointed. I had heard wonderful things and there were unique flavor combos! The gf Crust was $4 extra so you would think it would be better for that price. The pizza was more soft and chewy than crispy, and the crust was burnt and very tiny (compared to the fluffy bubbly one of the regular pizza). The pizza also looks smaller than the regular despite being more money - which I get is typical for gluten free but still! I feel left out LOL. We don't eat red meat and usually there's a chicken sausage option... nope the only meat is red meat which was also disappointing because this limited our options greatly. I tried the gf Adrianna - pretty good, the sauce was very fresh and heavenly, could've had a little more cheese, basil was a refreshing touch. Also tried the gf alba but with cherry tomatoes instead of mushrooms. This was by far the favorite of the night but it was almost soggy by the time it got home 15 minutes later from the honey maybe? Still great balance of sweet and savory and the caramelized onions were to die for. My cousins also had the regular alba and a Patrizia and seemed to really love it and they're picky. So maybe Il bosco remains known for their regular pizza but the gluten free could have some improvements. The gf crust at pomo is better and more reminiscent of regular crust

Yelp
Very disappointed overall. The restaurant was extremely crowded and uncomfortably loud, making it hard to enjoy the atmosphere. The service was the most frustrating part--we waited nearly 20 minutes before anyone came to take our initial order. A busser eventually brought over a bottle of tap water and four dirty glasses. After we asked for clean ones, he apologized and returned with new glasses that reeked of chlorine--so much so that it affected the taste of our drinks. The meatball appetizer was okay--maybe a 6/10. The sauce was the best part. Unfortunately, the pizzas were a letdown. They were overly sauced, lacked depth of flavor, and the so-called "burrata" was definitely not quality burrata. The dough was passable, but nothing special. Sadly, this was a one-and-done experience. We won't be returning.

Yelp
Il Bosco Arrived around 6:45 pm on a Saturday, all tables inside were taken, plenty of seating outside, we got the last 2 seats at the bar right in front of the oven. Meatballs- Al forno, served w/ parmesan and crostini bread were good, we wanted to try some of their specialty items. Joanna - red sauce, spicy sausage, I substituted for mild sausage, pepperoni, mozzarella was good, cooked well with a little char. Ingredients were good quality and it was nice to see the assembly from tossing dough to sauce to cheese to toppings and then in the wood fire oven. Carmela - red sauce, sausage, spinach, caramelized onions and fresh mozz which was a good mix of different ingredients. Pizzas were prepared and cooked well by a young man who was whipping out pizzas one after another for dine in customers as well as take out orders, he took care of the rush with no problem. Props to him, very impressive. Had a diet cola soda, it was not very good and I am being nice talking about this, please replace that soda. Chocolate Chip ala mode was pretty good, ice cream + chocolate chip cookie = very good, but how could you mess that up. With us sitting in front of the oven, we had front and center seats of everything that went in and out of the oven, then after the crush of orders, a young lady took over the cooking of the Pizzas and to me and my wife sitting next to me, the new cook pulls out a pizza and it is severely charred as in burnt, she slides it in the take out box, it is sliced and box is closed. I am thinking whoa! I wouldn't want that pizza, then another pizza comes out charred, same thing, placed in box, sliced and box closed, I then look at my wife and she looks at me like that stinks for the person who receives those pizzas. This continued for at least 7 - 10 more charred Pizzas, we just thought OMG, glad she didn't cook our pizza. Restaurant is small and quaint inside with a larger area of tables outside. Have been wanting to try out IL Bosco for a long time, was good, but did not give me that wow feeling and the lady cook just took me back a bit. Tip, if take out, open your pizza box, check your pie before you leave to make sure it is to your satisfaction.

Yelp
We had Il Bosco last night for the first time after ogling their menu for about a month. I read all the reviews and while it seems like the Valentina is a highly rated option, we could not pass up the ZA. So glad we didn't! It was SO good, I love the textures, flavors, the crust was perfect. Absolutely loved. Also had the veggies w burrata and mozzarella - loved the lemon flavor in this. BUT!! The standout option for me was the stuffed peppadew peppers - holy smokes! I will think about those little guys for a long time to come!! If you're looking for great wood fired pizza, add this to your list!

Yelp
Came here for a date on Saturday night. My date made reservations and when we told a server she asked if we wanted in or outdoors. We said outside and she would bring menus. It's took almost 15 minutes for someone to finally come over and bring me it's, in fact a family was sat next to us, after we had been there, and were given menus and after before is. We asked for a heater and one was brought over. Took forever to get it working. We finally ordered a salad and pizza Lucia, which was very good. I don't know if I would go back based on the initial service.
google avatar

Jesse J.

Yelp
Solid 4.25/5 Came in for dinner finally after hearing about this place for ages. Started with the stuffed peppers. They were great. A hint of spice and tons of flavor stuffed with the sausage. Then we shared the Valentina pizza. It was delicious. The hot honey really made it. Loved the cupped pepperonis as well. Lastly we did the Neapolitan ice cream for dessert. It was the perfect end to an amazing meal. Service was terrific. Everything came out very fast. We sat on the patio which had tons of room and heaters for those who need them. Totally will be back. We really enjoyed.

Yelp
Il Bosco is located In the heart of downtown Phoenix. The outside patio is big with plenty of seating. It's a great place for a pizza and a beer and to hangout with friends. The pizzas are the BEST pizzas in the greater Phoenix area. It's so good I actually get cravings for it. We had the Valentina, the Katarina, and the Morena pizzas. All three were spectacular. The crust was perfectly done, crispy on the outside fluffy on the inside. The staff are nice, attentive and always there when you need them.
google avatar

Elaine V.

Yelp
Their pizzas are amazingly delicious. I've been there atleast 5 times and their pizzas are consistently perfect. Love them! I usually get my pizzas to go. The employees are always welcoming and friendly. There is a nice outside patio seating area. Service is always fast.
google avatar

Jen B.

Yelp
Great pizza. We got the Carmela and added mushrooms. The Caesar salad was nothing special, but good to get some greens. The Malbec was quite tasty and I felt paired well with the pizza I got. We sat outside and the tables were more well spaced than inside and they had heaters which was a bonus. Service was good as well.
google avatar

Elizabeth F.

Yelp
Food was meh for me, others in my party liked the pizza. Crust was burnt but the toppings and flavors were very good on the pizza with pepperoni and hot honey. Service was non existent at first, server was sweet but seemed not to know a lot when asked questions about menu items. Knowing your menu items is a crucial element of a servers job description. Funny how the check came pretty quick cause they were closing whereas we waited so long just to get noticed when we got there. All in all it was a decent dining experience, maybe not worth the price tag so we most likely won't return.

Yelp
This is a hard review for me to write. This is a restaurant that I worked at in high school. This is a restaurant that my parents used to go to weekly. This is NOT the Il Bosco that I used to love. We arrived around 8:30pm (closes at 9) and I understand wanting to stop service at close. We were welcomed and were told that the kitchen closed in 10 minutes so we ordered right as we sat. The meatballs themselves were dense and subpar but the sauce was amazing. The pizzas (Gabriella and biaggia) are amazing. But the moment the clock struck 9, the staff stacked the tables around us and essentially stood around out table gossiping, forcing us to take our glass of wine outside to finish the meal as we felt so unwelcome. I've never experienced being forced out of a restaurant quite like this. If you want the restaurant to close at 9, stop your service at 8. It's shameful to force paying customers out when they sit at 8:30, when you kitchen is still open. Shame on you. Your previous owner, Bill, would have been so ashamed of you. The quality of the pizzas is amazing and unparalleled in the valley. The service and lack of willingness to cater to the customer is embarrassing. Il Bosco is not what it once was and its breaking my heart to say that

Yelp
Found my new favorite go-to pizza spot in all of Phoenix!! The pizza is thin crust and such a perfect balance between fluffy and crispy, the sauce to cheese ratio was perfect, and everything is super fresh! Cute, comfy, and casual place. Service was super fast and amazing. Can't wait to go again!
google avatar

Rachel B.

Yelp
Would not recommend ordering takeout from this restaurant. Super doughy pizza crust -we had to wait to eat till we heated up our own oven to crisp it more. The meatballs were dry and the fried ravioli was slimy. The taste of their tomato sauce was good but everything else was a letdown. This has been on our list to try for a while. We've never dined in and I'd hope the quality is at least a little better at the restaurant than what we got but we probably won't be giving IL Bosco another try after this first impression.

Yelp
Craved a wood fire pizza and this place did it well. Order online to go and got half Adrianna and half Joanna. One the best pizza I've had in a while and for a good price I would say. They have nice seating outside so I can see dining there being a great vibe.
google avatar

Frank M.

Yelp
Amazing pizza , great service and a nice place. The crust is the foundation of a great pizza and it's was amazingly delicious .

Yelp
This place is so good, such a neighborhood fave. We were immediately sat outside, which was great because they have ample sprinklers. The food was amazing, definitely have a list of pizzas to order to try in the future. The service was quickly and friendly! Great experience all around. I got the carbonara pizza and it was to die for.

Scot A.

Yelp
It pains me to write this one, as I've posted reviews of Il Bosco in the past and praised them for one of - if not THE best - pizza in the Valley. Unfortunately, something's gone wrong. My wife and I dropped in last night for a quick dinner, which couldn't be more true as their pizza's cook in about 90 seconds. It had been a while since we'd eaten here, but it always makes my heart smile to walk into original owner Bill Forest's creation and see his OG pizzas still gracing the menu. We ordered the caprese salad (still solid, still the way Bill created it) and the Joanna pizza (red sauce, spicy sausage, pepperoni, mozzarella). Sadly, what we had grown accustomed to over the years from Bill and even the new owners was missing. Thank God the toppings had the same great, bold flavors as always - that's the good. But that said, if you know pizza, you know all the toppings in the world can't save a crappy dough. Something was seriously wrong - hands down the worst dough I've ever tasted. Texture was a stiff cardboard with zero - ZERO - flavor. Trust me - I make my own Neapolitan dough, everything from Bianco's 12-hour dough to more complex, cold-fermented 72-hour doughs - fermentation and salt create the flavor. Last night tasted like neither happened. And the stiffness (I actually think that's the wrong word - the crust was rock hard...literally could not break it with my hands) wasn't from over-cooking...neither the crust nor the underside was charred. Just a pure 100% dough fail. I really want to believe something went wrong this one, singular time, but I have too many other good options to waste $20 on a pie that is borderline inedible. Will we try again? Probably. And if the same thing happens, would I hesitate to send it back and head to Pomo or somewhere else? In a heartbeat.

Yelp
Ummm how have I been missing out on this place my entire life until now?!?! I can say with 100% certainty that this is the best pizza I've ever had in my life. It's wood fired and the crust is unbelievable. On top of that, they have the best flavor combinations. I went with a friend and I got the Za and he got a similarly spicy pizza. We shared and by the end our mouths were on fire (but so worth it). I've been back since and we decided to do one spicy and one not, and the balance was a bit better for our mouths. But honestly, whatever you get is amazing. The service is quick and the inside is small, so if you go on a busy night, make a reservation. Even the bar fills up. I can't wait to go in cooler months because they have a great patio.
google avatar

Haley E.

Yelp
Extremely disappointed in my pick up order, the pizza was soggy when I arrived home but the most disappointing was the caprese salad.: i have attached my caprese salad picture to show what it looked like....
google avatar

Candace B.

Yelp
I wanted to try this location because it's closer and I didn't want to drive downtown. I had a reservation for inside but opted for outside due to it being sunset and not too hot outside. Our server was nice and attentive. The pizzas came out hot and fast. The ZA was okay for me. The green chilis and honey don't really mix too well in my opinion. Overall, with the atmosphere, fast and nice service, and location - I'd recommend and will probably be back myself.
google avatar

Myka R.

Yelp
The pizza was burnt, very little cheese and the ranch was definitely not homemade. The salad tasted like the dirt in grew in. The meatballs were cold and tasted like they forgot to season them. The waiter was unfriendly and didn't offer to refill our drinks once or ask if we wanted to dessert which we planned to order but not after the appetizers and main course were subpar.
google avatar

Ryan B.

Yelp
Excellent pizza creations , amazing service and the hibiscus iced tea was especially delicious! The operations here are seamless. Great place
google avatar

Kelly V.

Yelp
We ordered from this restaurant the other night and it was generally tasty. My cheese pizza was wonderful but I found that crust rather boring. It didn't have a ton of flavor. My friend's pepperoni pizza was REALLY well done and some of the pepperoni was burned. My husband enjoyed his pizza and he's hard to please with pizza. We also got an order of toasted ravioli which was fun because that's a local specialty in my hometown. This is a decent pizza joint but I don't think it stands out among the options to choose from in Scottsdale.
google avatar

Gina D.

Yelp
I can't believe we have never been to Il Bosco. Great service and amazing pizza. We went with our server's recommendation - the Morena pizza and the ZA. Soooo good and highly recommend. We will be back again soon.
google avatar

Aliyah J.

Yelp
Great food! The salsa di parmigiana appetizer is a heartstopper but it was delicious.
google avatar

Charlie L.

Yelp
We went on a Monday evening around 5:30. The inside was busy, but there was only one table occupied outside. When we walked in we were asked if we had a reservation which was odd given that almost all of the tables outside were unoccupied (oh, Scottsdale, you do have attitude). We did not have a reservation and were told there we could sit anywhere except for tables marked reserved (for a total of 1 table marked reserved). Water was brought fairly quickly and the server asked if we wanted the heater on - yes, please and thank you! We put in our order for bruschetta and the Joanna pizza. The bruschetta with the fig jam had a bit too much fig jam on it for me, but overall the dish was quite delicious. The pizza was so tasty that we left no crumbs. The crust had the right amount of char and was nicely cooked. The heater went out sometime during the pizza eating stage, but we didn't actually notice since we were so absorbed with our pizza. For dessert, I had the cannoli and my dining companion had the gelato. The cannoli cream was superb, the cannoli itself was a tad too thick for my personal taste. The vanilla gelato was overall balanced, but would have been a bit boring if there hadn't been chocolate sauce on it. The ambiance was kind of meh. The service was competent. The experience was definitely about the food which was overall very tasty.
google avatar

Debra G.

Yelp
Let me start by saying we love this place! Great pizza and service BUT I have to say that the price tag of $9.90 for their portion size for the Tiramisu is the reason for 3 stars.
google avatar

Suleman A.

Yelp
Small and cozy pizza place in Scottsdale. The ambiance was very welcoming and homey, the staff were nice and helpful. Overall, the food was great but there was nothing in terms of the food that stood out to me. I would have it again but I wouldn't consider it my go-to place for me
google avatar

Ken B.

Yelp
Really great pizza spot! Pizzas are about 12 inches in size so you can easily eat one yourself. Meatball appetizer takes you back to Sunday dinner at your Italian grandmothers. Family owned business that cares about their food and service. Will be back for sure.
google avatar

Eric H.

Yelp
Great pizza! Sat at the bar and watched the machine in action...very busy cranking out delicious pies.
google avatar

Alyse F.

Yelp
This place is straight stellar. I will always come here. I love their patio which is lovely at any time of day or year. The pizza is always 10/10. One of my favorite Phoenix spots for wood fired, real Italian style pizza. Their appetizers are yummy too!
google avatar

Olivia C.

Yelp
The ambiance was amazing sitting outside at night. The wait staff was attentive while giving us time to eat. I went with 4 people and we were all hungry enough to eat our own pizza. I got the Morena and it was SO good. All my friends loved their other pizzas as well!
google avatar

Austin H.

Yelp
This is great, Pizzia. Some would say the best Pizzia. I actually agree with those people. This Pizzia is truly good. This pizza is everything. Pizza should be hot, fresh, good dough. And it doesn't cost a lot of dough, which is nice when dining on a dime.
google avatar

Jacob S.

Yelp
Bought takeout from here and they took an extra 15 minutes from their projected time... and this was my pizza! Completely burnt and tremendously disappointing.
google avatar

Ambrose T.

Yelp
This place easily makes it in the top 5 pizza places in Phoenix for me. The mozzarella is top notch and the crust is delicious! My only gripe is service. Two suggestions: Please seat your customers with menus. Servers please introduce yourselves.
google avatar

John G.

Yelp
Sadly, it seems that quality control has left the building - the 4 of the last 5 times we've ordered, the crust has been burnt...here are photos from the last couple of times - roughly a month apart, after I noticed the pattern and made a note to record it. The pizza would still be 5 stars if they were still paying attention to not letting burnt product cross the pass. Hope to see things get back to the way they used to be, as I love the pizza here!
google avatar

Gus C.

Yelp
The most incredible wood fired pizza in the Valley, without a doubt! I've been coming here for years and always tell myself I'm going to try a new pizza... but always wind up getting the Carmela because it's to die for. Their apps are amazing (meatballs are great in particular), have great wine to pair, and the service is always lights out. I also love the intimate atmosphere - the inside probably only holds 20 people, but they do have a patio that seats more and is more spacious. It's great for date night, or popping in for a quick solo meal, or dinner with friends. I've done it all, and highly recommend you do the same!
google avatar

Ashni P.

Yelp
The pizza variety and quality was impeccable and the outdoor space was so nice!! Highly recommend!!
google avatar

Ziad S.

Yelp
Came to the Phoenix location after seeing so much hype about this place on social media. Seat yourself style so obviously a very casual restaurant. Service definitely lacked because everyone sat at once with no pacing. Tried to the toasted ravioli and it came out so fast it was obviously already cooked or preheated. Not bad but truly tasted like something you could buy at the store. We got 2 different pizzas, can't remember the name but both very basic, and they were good. Was is the best pizza in the valley? No. But it was reasonably priced for the size and the quality. Also they don't serve coke or Pepsi fountain products but rather some off brand bottled soft drinks which aren't bad but would much rather prefer a coke. Worth a shot if you're in the area and want good pizza but probably wouldn't come back as we've had better elsewhere.

Yelp
I've dined at IL Bosco twice now. Both very different experiences in terms of crowds and atmosphere. It gets 5 stars because the pizza is simply delicious. First time I dined with my wife on a Saturday in April of 2022. They were packed and we were seated outside. The next time I came with two of my friends on a Sunday in June of 2023, and the place wasn't busy at all. Both times I came I ordered the Joanna pizza which Spicy Italian Sausage and Pepperoni. I added mushrooms and basil to it. Man it was absolutely delicious. Toppings tasted so fresh and the pizza was cooked perfectly with just the right amount of crunch. I definitely love the taste of pizza cooked in a wood fired oven. My wife ordered the Maria which she loved. I should mention that when I came with my wife we ordered our pizzas gluten free as she has celiac disease. Finding good gluten free pizza can be challenging and these were great. On my second visit I had just their standard crust. My wife and I shared a Cesar Salad which was really good. Drink wise they have a full bar, but I just ordered beer. They have a really good hazy ipa on draft here. It's the Church Music by The Shop Brewing Company. Highly recommended. Service here on both visits was perfectly fine. Final Thoughts: IL Bosco makes absolutely delicious wood fired pizza with fresh toppings. The atmosphere is laid back and relaxing. I would definitely return here for pizza the next time I'm in Scottsdale.

Yelp
I was excited to try this spot but was disappointed in the wait and pizza crust! Came by with a reservation on Saturday night - lots of outdoor seating and some seating indoors. Great for a casual date night. We were seated promptly at 6:30pm, someone took our order after about 5-10 minutes. We didn't get our two pizzas until 35 minutes later which felt like forever since we were so hungry. There were a ton of take out orders which backed up the kitchen which was understandable - I recommend coming during a less busy time if you don't want to wait for long. On to the pizzas - we got the Za and the Mia, flavorwise they were amazing. So tasty and great topping combinations. The Mia felt unique bc there was an egg! Great for cheese lovers. Kind of reminded me of carbonara but in pizza form. The Za is great if you like a bit of spice, the honey was a nice contrast. What we didn't like was the crust sadly. Mine was a bit too burnt and hard for me. I prefer soft and fluffy crusts! Halfway through my jaw was sore. Overall not a bad spot but wouldn't go out of my way to return.

Maddie I.

Yelp
In my self proclaimed professional pizza opinion, this is some great pizza. The combination of toppings we ordered were spectacular and the dough has got to be some of the best. We came later in the evening on a weekday so although it's a smaller place, it wasn't crazy busy. Servers were kind and attentive. We had an all around great experience and will definitely go back!

David S.

Yelp
Best pizza in Scottsdale AZ Great wood burning pizza oven Gives crust great flavor Toppings were good Service good Again GREAT PIZZA
google avatar

Sergio A.

Yelp
One of the best pizza places in AZ, highly recommend! Make reservations ahead of time.

Stephanie B.

Yelp
Tasty spot for some apps and a wood fired pizza. Nice casual patio with heaters. The only miss for me was the lack of a cocktail menu!

Jerry B.

Yelp
First time to order a to go pizza and it was delicious! I will continue to support. Really liked the sauce and crust.
google avatar

Cindy L.

Yelp
I have to say that the best thing here was the charcuterie board. I'm not sure if I could've done a bad night, but we ordered three different pizzas and Best was the one that had pepperoni with honey on it, how strange the other two were bland. I know that they are known for their pizza but what we figured out is that there's sausage was not good taste and like they soaked in water for giving out flavor but their pizza sauce wasn't happening. The wine list was mediocre. Our favorite part, were the employees.. We did like Sara, Lila, Sam, Cade and Kindric(?). Don't think we will return.
google avatar

Suzanne S.

Yelp
Three stars is being generous. Yes it was an Uber eats delivery. Regardless the meatballs were awful. The Carmelita pizza was like a frozen pizza warmed up ( which I did ) and the Adriana w burrata was barely acceptable. I finally have learned. NEXT. Sorry guys.
