I visited Jac’s on Bond recently and was genuinely disappointed by how my date and I were treated by a staff member named Carlos. What makes this especially disheartening is that my friends and I have hosted large parties at this venue in the past — events totaling thousands of dollars in business. After this experience, I will no longer be returning, and I’ll be advising my network to consider other venues as well.
To be fair, the manager, Brandon, handled the situation professionally and comped our drinks — which I appreciated. Still, the encounter left such a bad taste in my mouth, 20 days later, that I feel compelled to write this review.
On the night of 5/23, Carlos, a support staff member, was extremely rude to both me and my partner. It felt targeted to the point that we eventually had to leave. We had reserved a table and each had just two drinks — we were sober, calm, and simply enjoying our evening.
At one point, Carlos approached and abruptly asked if I was done with a half-full margarita. I had just taken a sip of water and, unable to speak without spitting it out, I calmly shook my head no. Carlos paused, turned back, and suddenly aggressively yelled, “THE LEAST YOU COULD DO IS RESPOND TO ME!” I was stunned. I looked to the in-house bouncer standing nearby, hoping for some acknowledgment or assistance — but he said and did nothing.
When Carlos walked past again, I asked, politely, “Excuse me, what is your name, please?” He aggressively put his hand up in my face, just inches away — a “stop” gesture — and snapped, “NO, NO!” before storming off.
Quite disturbed, I calmly asked to speak to the manager. Brandon came over quickly and asked who was involved. As luck would have it, Carlos walked by at that moment. When I pointed him out, Carlos once again shoved his hand in my face, this time just centimeters from my nose — right in front of the manager. Brandon immediately told him to leave the area.
We left shortly after. The tension and discomfort were impossible to ignore. It was also extremely embarrassing that the entire bar was staring at us watching the series of horrendous events. Our table was moved to the far side of Carlos' area, and we left within minutes, feeling both abused and disgraced.
No one should be treated with such aggression — especially not at a venue that presents itself as upscale and welcoming in a diverse city like New York. Whether or not Carlos's behavior was discriminatory, I can’t say for sure. But it was clearly unacceptable and calls for serious internal action.
I’ve always wanted to support businesses that value respect and inclusion. I hope Jac’s on Bond takes this incident seriously, because one person’s hostility can easily undermine an otherwise great establishment.
