Houston's Restaurant & Bar Openings - Houston - The Infatuation

"Fans of Jane Wild Market pop-up’s blissful pies and sourdoughs will be happy to know she’s opened a full-blown bakehouse and cafe in the former Morningstar space on North Main. Expect hits like salted honey pie and those fat, freshly baked loaves, plus daily breakfast plates, egg tarts, gluten-free bagels with schmears, and rotating small-batch coffee collabs. They’re open Thursday through Monday for now, but plans are in the works to extend hours and bring in grinder sandwiches and sourdough pizza down the line." - brooke viggiano, gianni greene, chelsea thomas

Jane And The Lion - Review - The Heights - Houston - The Infatuation

"Jane & The Lion is a tiny strip mall bakery in The Heights. But behind that little glass door are the sights and smells of a carb-fueled fever dream. The inside looks like it was pulled straight from the pilot episode of The Great Victorian Baking Show (producers, shoot us an email). It’s packed full of antique furniture, vintage teacups, and cute framed paintings of croissants and lemon meringue pies in competition with the real ones in the massive display case. Unsurprisingly, the baked goods are the main draw—bacon fat chocolate chip cookies, crusty sourdough loaves, and lemon cream pies topped with enough hand-whipped blueberry cream to be nearly as tall as they are wide. But if you come hungry (or hungover), go straight for the Lion Board. It’s less charcuterie, more carnivore sampler platter, with crispy bacon, runny eggs, sausage, cheese, and a bowl of tiny ribs that feels primal in the best way. Everybody loves to think their neighborhood bakery is worth a cross-town trek. If you live in The Heights, you might actually be right. photo credit: Nicolai McCrary" - Nicolai McCrary

Houston Restaurant Openings to Know Right Now, April 2025 | Eater Houston

"A charming 40-seat café opened by pastry chef Jane Wild that grew out of a long-running pop-up and farmers market stall; the bakery focuses on an abundance of pastries, pies, breads, biscuits, cookies, and cakes alongside coffee from local roasters. The daily-changing food menu includes a filling vegan bean-and-potato burrito, sandwiches, quiche, salads, and sourdough loaves (available in a gluten-free option). Operating initially Thurs–Sun with plans to expand to daily 7 a.m.–7 p.m., the operation will broaden into beer, wine, cocktails, pizza, hot sandwiches, snack boards, soups, and sourdough croissants, building on Wild’s background running other local bakery and dining projects." - Brittany Britto Garley

Truly one of the best cafe experiences I've ever had in Houston! The staff is so friendly and informative, the food is fresh, and everything was crafted with intention. I got a breakfast plate and the plate was curated down to the herbs. The vibe is also incredibly cozy and welcoming. It's a welcome addition to the Houston cafe scene. The attention to detail and the prioritization of quality is so evident. Incredible!

My husband and I wanted to try a new place for breakfast and brunch, and we're so glad we chose Jane and the Lion. The food was excellent the quality, freshness, and flavor did not disappoint. The sourdough bread was especially good! The staff was friendly, and we loved that they sell local farm products like eggs and meats. The atmosphere felt cozy and familiar, but the music was a little too loud for a relaxed meal, which made it hard to stay for very long. Overall, it's a great spot for delicious food and fresh ingredients!

Google
This place is incredible! We ordered a collection of sweet and savory treats and everything was delectable. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the atmosphere is perfect for working or escaping for a relaxing breakfast or lunch. They also have incredible local honey, coffee, fruit, flour, and other goods. We will be coming back!

Google
Absolutely lovely staff at Jane the Lion. The selection is unique, and the ingredients are wonderful! I love that they use Barton Springs Mill Flour. We got a little of everything and are working our way through it. The quiche Lorraine was delectable with flaky crust & fluffy but moist egg. The greens that are served with it are also extremely flavorful and taste garden fresh. I can't believe the intense floral honey flavor in the salted honey pie- definitely sweet but absolutely a great couple bites, good for sharing! There are just about 5 tables inside and some outside, but they do have a couple bar tops for seating too. Weekdays are a great time to go, there was no line and we were able to get a table at 11 am on a Thursday. Their online ordering is also available for big items Tuesday - Thursday. The menu is seasonal and always changing, so we will be returning to try more!

Google
They had signs that said they used local vendors and no seed oil. Their food and staff was amazing! I might go back to Houston just for this place. I also tried their gluten-free cinnamon roll and cookies and cream cookies, they were excellent and not just for gluten-free.

Google
First, I must say I was pleasantly surprised that it had a parking lot because I just knew due to the area we’d have to search for street parking. Since it is connected to other businesses, the parking lot was full, but we got a spot. We got right in line to order. I got their hash, which had eggs, bacon and a variety of veggies underneath, and my sister got the avocado toast. Both of our meals were yummy, filling, and had us agreeing that the portion size was good for the price. I cannot remember which lattes we got, but they were perfect. I like to taste my coffee, so I don’t like it too sweet but also not too strong. Lastly, I loved the decor, and the staff seemed to be on top of things. I look forward to coming back and hope Jane and the Lion will be around for a while.

Google
A cozy coffee shop with an inviting atmosphere, offering delicious pastries, fresh-baked breads, and hearty meals. The space is beautifully designed with charming antique furniture, giving it a warm and unique character. I tried the daily plate along with a slice of salted honey pie, both were absolutely delicious. Everything tasted fresh and thoughtfully prepared, with ingredients sourced from local farms.

Google
Just the grunge brunch vibe with farm to table cooking I was looking for! Delicious baked goods, great cold brew and amazing fresh cooked breakfast hash and a breakfast sandwich. One of my new neighborhood favorites.

Yelp
It always make me feel good when a great place gets (deservedly) popular, assuring that they may be around for a while. The baked goods are good here. Baked a tad bit darker than what one would see in France or Spain, but still tasty. Amaya coffee by Catalina Coffee Would have preferred an apple pie with peeled apples. Oh well. Lots of other options.

Yelp
Thai place really did great with carrying the rustic fee through out their bakery. It's a bit of a mix of ol'timey country store with modern casual hipster brunch. The service was a mix of good and bad. The bad was that they completely forgot our order and the front of house claimed my husband ordered a cortado and I know for a fact he did not because he has NEVER ordered a cortado. She insisted several times and almost acted like we were trying to get free food. She made us wait 6 extra minutes for her to find the order receipt she lost and when you have a toddler with you, time is of the essence. The good is that the man working the in the back (maybe making the coffee?) was a pleasure and should give the woman taking orders a lesson or 3 in customer service. Now the baked goods were phenomenal. The quiche honestly didn't look too appetizing as it has a piece of pale bacon on top that looks like flesh but it was so well done. It was insanely intricate. The layers were layering. I think it even had mustard and carmalized onions in the base layer. The cheese was well integrated and overall I was impressed. I got a the bread pudding and wanted to take a picture but I blinked and it was gone. I don't even remember what happened - just straight devoured. Also got the chicken poblano empanada. It made me feel like I was having a lovely medieval lunch. Something about it just felt hearty. It was thick and sometimes a thick empanada isn't want you want but I'm going to call this a European take on one. A empanada to feed two and fuel you to plow some fields. Oh and the vanilla latte was smooth, creamy and not too sweet. It is rare to go to a bakery that has both great pastries and coffee. I would have made this one of my staple bakeries if it wasn't for the front of house service.

Yelp
Rawr. Accidental find on TGTG but so very glad I did. The staff is so friendly and the vibe in the cafe is fun! I heard they do farmers markets too. Everything was so delicious. The breakfast biscuits were flaky and delicious. Everything was really good. Not overly done. And they reheated well in either an air fryer or oven. But let's talk about the salted honey pie. I can't even begin to explain how surprised I was by how much I loved it. It didn't sound very good but the taste is amazing. I was licking the container lol. Def plan on going back esp since it's so close.

Yelp
Small coffee cafe located in strip shopping center back off Main Street by Gracie Barba Jiu-jitsu. The baked goods are unique, so give it a try.

Yelp
I've been seeing my friends post about Jane and the Lion on Instagram for so long, and I'm so glad I finally got to stop by and try it out for myself! We came on a Friday morning around 7:30AM and were able to order without having to wait. The staff were all super helpful answering any questions I had about the menu, and the interior decorating was super cute. Loved the vibe! Especially the lion pirate in the bathroom. I ended up ordering one of their famous seasonal toasts -- Friday's was perfectly toasted and topped with peaches, tomatoes, torn basil, a creamy cheese that I can't remember (probably some type of ricotta or burrata), and pine nuts. Super filling and yet really light and refreshing! The bread itself was also super hearty. Loved the freshly squeezed juice as well. My friends are regulars here so we were well taken care of and had a great time enjoying our breakfasts. Definitely would love to stop by again the next time I'm in the city!

Yelp
First off, the space itself is super cozy and nice! Then the baked goods.... Amazing! We had a biscuit with jam, a duffin and a cinnamon roll. Everything we tried was soo soo good. The cinnamon roll was one of the best I've had! The staff was super nice and helpful as well! We will definitely be back for the breakfast!

Yelp
Loved the indoor vibes and atmosphere. I was there on a Saturday 5 mins before the doors opened, and quickly a few others started to show up. As I stepped in, the queue built up! I had a latte, avocado toast with a sunny side up (eggs are made with duck fat - yum!). Grabbed a few goodies to-go; I really enjoyed the duffin and bacon fat choc chip cookie. Blackberry and blueberry pie was delicious too.

Yelp
Finally made my way around to Jane and the Lion. Saw it on IG by Shaun the sheep and was smitten. I love good simple food and JAL delivered!!! Started with a good piece of plum and nectarine streusel and a cup of fabulously HOT coffee. The daily plate was a highlight for me. I love breakfast at any time of day, but was surprised at salad for breakfast! And the added vinegar dressing with flower petals throughout. Made me feel as if I was in a fancy tea. I FINALLY had a well made over medium egg. The crusty fresh baked bread was just... well let's say I may just be a regular.. price wise though I spent about 26 dollars for breakfast but I rather put the money in a small business than a chain restaurant. Service was great, I loved the simple yet upgraded country home feel of it. Now I need to coordinate my friends to come with me.

Yelp
We saw Jane and the Lion on social media and decided to visit, as we also live near the area. However, we were extremely disappointed. There were two flies in the display case flying around, which you can see in the video when you zoom in near the Hidden Gem muffins. After serving us our pie, we waited for 20 minutes for our drink. The workers were just conversing with one another, and when we came to inquire about our drinks, they told us they had forgot about them. I would have understood if they were busy, but there were only two other groups sitting during that time. The strawberry rhubarb pie was tart but not particularly outstanding. They gave us metal forks, but there was no bin or anywhere to dispose them. I was disappointed with the hygiene (flies in display case) and the service, and I believe they a lot of room for improvement.

Yelp
Went to Jane and the Lion on Friday around brunch time. Parking really kinda sucks.. although people are in and out.. it can get congested and a little annoying to find a spot. Luckily, someone was leaving and we got to snag parking. When we walked up.. there was a line that moved a little slow. It was hot.. so we were kind of melting until we got inside. Inside is small... but very cute. Definitely a local spot.. and we love supporting local, good food! We ordered the biscuit with egg (10/10!!!, so freaking good), the pretzel bread kolache (10/10!! verrrrry good, wish the sausage was spicy though), and a jalapeno pastry (mid) and a cookie's and cream cookie (my husbands fav!!) Definitely check it out. I thought pricing was reasonable. Service was good. We were with friends and they somehow forgot two orders... but otherwise, we love the little place!

Yelp
Visited on a week day, so parking was less challenging. We enjoyed booth of the toasts we ordered: the rhubarb and duck liver. The sourdough bread is lovely, buttered and toasted to perfection. The salted honey pie was a little too sweet for my own personal preference, my son loved the crust. I also ordered a quiche to go, it reheated well. The staff recommend a gluten free pastry, do need to return to try more things. More limited coffee selection. Duck eggs available for purchase.

Yelp
I'm so happy that Jane has opened a brick and mortar! I've watched the lines grow over the years at her markets and the quality and menu only got better so I had to stop by as soon as I could. The line wasn't too long. I waited about 20 minutes to order. I loved the benches outside with movable boxes to eat on. Once inside I was impressed with what was done to the space. The dark walls, flowers and art, the eclectic furniture really fit well. I didn't get much, just my normal vandalized biscuits with jam, buttery, flaky and dense, and a few pretzels for snacking. Service was quick and everyone was nice and helpful. There's a full menu with quiches, toasts and sandwiches, and coffees and teas. She's even got local eggs by the dozen! I can't wait to sit and have breakfast one day soon!

Yelp
Jane and the Lion Café is a small-batch, in-house bakery meets cozy coffee shop tucked away in Houston--and it's a total hidden gem if you're into baked goods that are actually made from scratch. The moment you walk in, it smells like fresh pastry heaven and feels super warm and welcoming. We tried several items, but the clear standouts were the housemade quiche (perfect texture, flaky crust, not overly eggy) and the pastries--especially the ones with seasonal fruit. You can tell they don't outsource anything; everything is fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with intention. They also offer a few gluten-free options, which was such a nice surprise. Another highlight? The housemade juices! We tried one with citrus and ginger, and it was insanely refreshing--light, natural sweetness, and so fresh. They rotate flavors seasonally, so ask what they're offering when you go. Now, the coffee was just okay--not terrible, but nothing super memorable. If you're coming just for espresso drinks, you might leave underwhelmed. But honestly, the food and vibes more than make up for it. Atmosphere-wise, the inside is beautifully designed--minimalist but cozy, with a curated feel. There's not a ton of seating, though, so if you're visiting during a busy time or hoping to work for a while, it may be tough to find a table. What to Know Before You Go: Coffee is mid, but baked goods = elite Must-tries: quiche, pastries, housemade juices Gluten-free options available Aesthetic + cozy interior Limited seating, especially on weekends Best to go early or off-peak to avoid crowds

Yelp
We ordered a Duffin which was so fluffy and delicious. Then we got our hot tea and Americano. They didn't have earl gray tea so they worked with me to try and make something as close to a London Fog that they could. Then we had the breakfast sandwich with pork sausage and the breakfast plate with bacon. The sourdough is FANTASTIC. Only thing I'll do next time is ask for some butter to add on as extra. Breakfast sandwich was huge and full and so soft. Only downside was dirty plates left out on tables for a while when there really isn't much seating options to begin with. Their AC must've been struggling to keep up in the small space but they did have some fans going to try and help.

Yelp
Funky new bakery just opened up. The service and food were outstanding . A bit pricey but at least I did not leave hungry. I really like how they decorated the place. Very funky and hip. I hope they rotate art for sale. Also a good place to order farm fresh goods so worth checking it out.
google avatar

Yelp
Update. Went back the next day with a friend and she had ordered an item in line but they sold it to the next person because they didn't get it out of the case fast enough. They offered her a biscuit as a replacement but when they brought it out it was still frozen. I got the egg sandwich and added bacon and it was pretty tasty but also pricey.
google avatar

Brittney D.

Yelp
Ouu, yum. The feels aren't quite there yet for me- maybe bland, maybe unenthused? Maybe not. But the baked goods? Stellar. I ordered many that I haven't tasted yet but that simple biscuit? That there is the second best biscuit I've had in Houston. Salty, buttery, crisp and fluff where it should be! It was a 9.5/10- I took half bc they warmed it for me at my request but it wasn't warmed all the way thru and the cold with the warm was fumbly. Never the less, I will most def be back. Signed, first timer and new fan. Two word review: sour milk!

Yelp
Came here with several friends after a friend recommended it. The restaurant just opened earlier this week. Their menu appeared to be changing constantly. I recommend to come early as I wanted their Liver Let Die, but they run out, so I opted for their 4/20 Hash, which is essentially roasted and sauteed veggie bowl with an egg and bacon. I also had a slice of ther lemon chess pie and honey salted pie. You can also pre-order whole pies from them. I have seen pictures of their pies, and I really want to try their key lime one as it looks super yummy and beautiful. Their 4/20 Hash was really good, and I will try something else in the future. Plenty of seating for both small and large parties. The service and ambiance were both great. Definitely busy during breakfast and lunch hours. Would come here again to try some of their other items and their pies.

Derrick A.

Yelp
Just the kind of spot that Houston is lacking in - a carefully curated space and menu with a conscious emphasis on good ingredients. The space is lovely decorated, if a little cramped and crowded (the seating arrangements make it so that 2 people can take up multiple spots if they're not careful). The food is amazing, on top of having clean ingredients, locally sourced when possible. Presentation was superb as well. The food is very fairly priced and well portioned, I thought the drinks (my single latte hit $10) and pastries were slightly overpriced.

Lilly S.

Yelp
We love going to Jane's farmer's market booth and were so excited to hear that they had opened a store! It absolutely exceeded our expectations, which were already high! I got the eggplant dish, a strawberry tea, and a s'mores cookies, all of which were delicious! The vandalized biscuit is another market favorite of mine, and is always amazing! My partner loves the breakfast sandwich and duffin. The ambiance is very cool with lots of interesting paintings, free cucumber lime water, and friendly staff! I saw some people's reviews saying they thought prices were high, but I actually thought they were quite reasonable compared to similar local spots. 10/10 recommend we will definitely be back!

Kendall H.

Yelp
Delicious food and baked goods! Got some pie to go, and their house made breads are absolutely delicious. You can't go wrong with any item! But my personal favorite is the vandalized biscuits!
google avatar

Olivia S.

Yelp
so good you want to gate keep. Coffee is great, and baked goods are even better. You can tell they source good ingredients and I believe it's all locally sourced. Cozy ambiance.

Yelp
Stopped by during a weekday morning, the ambiance was great! I enjoyed the aesthetic of the shop. I ordered the Hash, and added chicken sausage. It was great! Very delicious, and filling. Their sourdough is ohhh so amazing! I also really liked their coffee, they use Amaya for their drip. The staff was very friendly, and everything came out on a timely manner. Wil definitely be coming back here :)

Adam B.

Yelp
Food was incredible and the inside is fun however built more for aesthetics than for functionality. We enjoyed the "Duffin" 10/10, and breakfast sandwich 10/10.
google avatar

Shawn M.

Yelp
Stopped in for breakfast and was not disappointed with quiche, traditional breakfast and biscuits. So many great options to choose and a nice coffee bar to complement all of the wonderful baked goods. Be prepared to wait at peak times. Would be helpful to have a menu of breads. We took some focaccia and a duffin home!
google avatar

Alicia H.

Yelp
So cute! Everything was delicious. We ordered breakfast and sweets to go. And the coffee was yummy too! They even had gluten free yummies. They Partner with local farms. The pickles were extra amazing! A MUST GO!

Harica K.

Yelp
Latte was not great--too milky and after needing an extra espresso shot to even it out it wasn't worth the $10 total. The breakfast sandwich was heavy on the butter but lacked any spice or flavor. Overall I think there are a lot better breakfast/bakery/coffee without spending $30.

Tyler N.

Yelp
Jane and the Lion opened up next to my gym, and I was extremely excited to try it. My wife and I went as soon as it opened on a Sunday and noticed a line to the door (which is not uncommon for a good breakfast place in Houston). We waited to place our order and noticed multiple flies flying around the display case and the dining area. We placed our order for their breakfast sandwich, side of foaccia, and side of bacon. We sat down and waited for almost an hour for our food to be made. I ended up asking about the food when I noticed a couple who had sat down after us receive their food before us. No one came by to ask if we needed anything or gave us an overview of timing. When I asked about our food, I was told our order would be next out (it wasn't) and finally apologized for the wait. When we finally received the food, the avocado added to the breakfast sandwich was cold and not cut into slices and my wife never received the side order of bacon. The wait time I would expect from a busy full sit down breakfast diner not a bake/coffee shop. My wife and I were very disappointed in the service, hygiene (due to the flies), and the food was not worth the wait. If this place is going to be successful, they should focus on being a bake/coffee shop rather than providing full breakfast meals or provide better customer service and check in on those who ordered food and are waiting over 30 minutes. We will not be back and do not recommend others try it until changes are made.

Yelp
This place is incredible. I have been three times and I have found my new favorite local bakery and coffee shop. I'm obsessed with the focaccia bread and the coffee is exceptional. Service is great! Everyone has a great attitude! I love the decor and I'm in love with the fresh wild flowers. Best new additional to the neighborhood

Annika B.

Yelp
This was the best gluten free breakfast sandwich I've ever had!!! Everyone was very friendly! The vibes were cool inside :) long line but worth the wait!
google avatar

William N.

Yelp
If you take away the line and terrible parking then this place is great. I got the breakfast plate and everything was great and lots of food. My wife got the breakfast sandwich with bacon and she said it was fantastic. For baked goods we got the vandalized biscuit and it was top notch. We also got the duffin ( donut muffin) it was great, but wouldn't get again. Wife said her latte was good and my coffee was fine. If you don't want to wait in line and have some pricey, but good amount of food then don't come here. I would definitely suggest coming though

Elizabeth B.

Yelp
Delicious turkey Caesar sandwich on their homemade sourdough. Very good gluten free options.

Claire C.

Yelp
I am so happy to find a restaurant that does not cook with any seed oils and using local, high quality ingredients. My only critique is that they were very slow getting our order out, about 20 minutes for things that didn't require cooking. I would love for them to stay open for dinner!

Yelp
I found Jane's business through Instagram. Her pies and offerings were creative, out of the box, and visually stunning! Have you even lived if you haven't gawked at her salted honey pie with vanilla-caramel custard, salt, and honey comb? If that wasn't enough, this years pumpkin cake is a work of art! Anyways, I noticed her appearances at farmers markets and events I always seemed to miss, so I was beyond excited to see that she offerings Holiday pies and provisions. Last year I tried the chocolate ice box pie and Texas pecan pie with streusel. Both set me back a pretty penny, but upon pickup I realized why...they're huge, hefty, and come in quality glass pie tins! Pickup was pretty seamless and the service during pickup was spectacular. Everyone was cheery and attentive. The pies themselves were beautifully presented and decorated like edible works of art. Flavor wise, neither was traditional by any means but both were addicting, unique, and flavorful. We preferred the pecan pie heated. If you're questioning dropping coin on these pies, I'd say it's time to take a walk on the wild side. Jane Wild that is! Certainly worth it imo. Thank you Jane for all that you do for the community. #ThankyouThursday

Yelp
I visited Jane's today and I was deeply disappointed. I came based on a review from TikTok that harped on how delicious everything was but what the TikTok failed to mention was how overpriced everything is. I ordered an egg and cheese biscuit, which was fresh out of the oven. while it tasted good it was drier than a piece of sandpaper. So as any logical person would do I asked for jam. little did I know jam cost two dollars at this bake house. Two dollars for jam that is in quantity less than a plastic Smuckers Jam. My boyfriend ordered the short rib and biscuit plate which he said was good. However it was also somewhat overpriced. You can't seriously tell me that a single biscuit is worth more than six dollars however at this place it is it's worth 7.50 and two dollars for jam. I think that Jane's needs to reevaluate their pricing scheme and adjust for Houston prices cause this just is not it.

Ori C.

Yelp
Cute inside but has taken over 20 minutes to heat up a pre-made quiche that was a to-go order. Be prepared to wait ridiculous amounts of time for mid pastries from this bakery

Erica M.

Yelp
All the baked goods are amazing but such a treat also to have fantastic gluten free sourdough, biscuits and bagels!

Nicole M.

Yelp
the pretzel was good, but they need a bigger selection of coffees/teas. cute spot that used to be morningstar donuts.

Yelp
Had a misunderstanding. Pick up was inaccurate and though they attempted at first to explain the issue. They ended up sounding rude and not sorry at all. This is the last response they which was inappropriate.
