The Best Restaurants in Sugar Land, Texas | Eater Houston

"For nearly two decades, this Sugar Land institution has drawn in the crowds with its expansive Japanese-South American fusion menu. Start the meal with the salmon tostadas — an assembly of mushrooms, salmon, pico de gallo, and nata cream stacked atop wontons. Try the New Zealand roll, a creation of shrimp tempura, avocado, and cream cheese topped with kani, crispy tempura flakes, and unagi. The Venezuela roll, made with seared Angus beef, avocado, caramelized onions, chimichurri, and jalapenos, is also a winner." - Brianna Griff

Robert White’s long‑running fusion spot blends Japanese technique with Latin flair—think plantain‑topped rolls and brisk happy hours. Profiled by ABC13 and recommended by the city tourism board, it’s a Town Square staple that stays distinctly local.

Amazing service and food. The tequeños were great, I do think they could have been paired with guasacaca instead of Salsa Rosada. The Noodle could've used a little more vibrant flavor to wake it up. Otherwise, very good.

We visited Japaneiro’s for the first time on Monday, for a school project. “5 STARS IMMEDITAELY!! We left the restaurant very amazed and completely stuffed. When we both walked in together, they had fall decorations up in the main entrance since it's the month of October. It was very clean and had an elegant look with lighting. The seating area was very spacious, if you have a lot of people that want to come and try this place out to eat there go ahead. The servers are completely on top of theirs, making sure they had everything we needed and treated us well to the max. Our server, Keath, was especially amazing, super friendly, attentive, and made sure we had an amazing experience from start to finish. We started off with drinks. We had a Spicy Apple Spritz refresher and since it took a while to make, they brought me water on the side just till I received the actual drink. We also got an appetizer. They were Steamed shrimp Dumplings, the shrimp sizzled on your tongue it was the perfect temperature, and the sauce was great as well it brought everything together. In addition we ordered a platter of 3 types of sushi': the Red Dragon Roll, Caterpillar roll, and the Rocket roll it came on this very nice platter where they were all put together which made it look like art they all had a different taste to them if you're looking for sushi's that are exotic we recommend these they have a little spicy and there's also raw fish on them but it was good kick and flavorful to them they very unique and pretty i would say amazing for photos and tasted amazing one of kind I believe this is one of the best sushi places I’ve been too for a first time. Overall, our experience at Japanerio’s was more than just good food; there was flavor, atmosphere, and service to provide a great overall experience. I would 100% consider returning with friends and family to try more of their menu offerings since everything positive to say was done quite well with their service and food being so fresh and flavorful that it was worth every penny.

Food very good. Everything we ordered is good any time I go & take friends they rave over the food & service & always go back. Especially ask for Jesus. He is exceptional with good positive energy. We had Lauren this time & was most disappointment with her service! Chaneta Lewis

Visited this restaurant for a family lunch after perhaps 15+ years - diverted here as we could not get into another restaurant that was our first choice. Thought the place had expanded in space in the intervening years, but Amanda, our server, assured us that that was not the case. Service was friendly - ordered Edamame and Yucca Fries as appetizers and Personal Sushi Sampler, Korean “Guru Bowl” Poke Bowl (Beef), and Veggie Tostadas. Dessert consisted of Chocolate Mousse Cake and Berry Bread Pudding - a shot of Rum ordered separately to soak the bread really helped with nostalgia, after having repeatedly savored Louisiana Bread Pudding at the finest restaurants (not necessarily all in fine surroundings) in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, etc. Food arrived relatively promptly and tasted fresh and flavorful. The meal with tip set us back approx. $130 - not at all cheap, especially for lunch, and sans alcohol (except for a $7 shot of Rum). However, nice to have returned to what was a go-to restaurant 15 years ago!

Google
I visited for the first time over the weekend. The first thing I noticed was how beautiful this place is - great atmosphere. We sat a high top in the bar area. We ordered hot sake which was good. I cannot remember the name of the drink I had but it was heavy with basil - I love basil but it was far too much and drowned out the entire cocktail. The sushi, nigiri and edamame were nothing special - it was all good but nothing you cannot find at any sushi or fusion restaurant. It was a nice experience but nothing I would return for unless meeting friends and they chose it.

Delicious Fusion Brunch with Great Service – Just Wish for Outdoor Seating! If you’re in the Sugar Land First Colony area and looking for an incredible brunch spot, Japanerio’s is a must-visit! This Latin-Japanese fusion restaurant offers a unique and flavorful menu that keeps you coming back for more. From the moment we arrived, the service was top-notch—friendly, attentive, and welcoming. The food was absolutely delicious, with fresh ingredients and a creative mix of flavors that made every bite enjoyable. The atmosphere inside was lively and inviting, making it a great place to enjoy a relaxing meal. JOHN was take good care of us. One thing that could elevate the experience? Outdoor seating! With this beautiful weather, it would be wonderful to have the option to dine outside and soak in the fresh air. Hopefully, they consider adding this in the future! A small downside is the paid parking, which was a bit unexpected, but overall, the experience was still worth it. Japanerio’s remains a fantastic spot for brunch for us, and we will definitely be back!

Google
There are a lot of options for everyone at Japaneiro’s, including fusion dishes (like the chimi fries), vegetarian options and rolls, and plenty of cooked and raw options for sushi. We tried a little bit of everything, but I absolutely loved the chimi fries. They were crispy and topped with a generous serving of avocado/chimichurri and chili powder. The spicy sauce was also amazing. The spicy sugarland roll had fresh buttery tuna and was very filling. Parking was conveniently located with a free parking garage in close proximity to the restaurant I would love to come back and try some more dishes!

Yelp
After six hours on the road. The last thing I wanted to do was drive to get dinner, so I ordered some delivery. I was pleasantly surprised. I ordered the crab puffs and the reviews did not lie...AMAzing! The Tajadas were perfection... The Rock n Roll (roll) was fresh, crisp, and made me wish I had ordered a second. Although, I did order a New Zealand as well, which was pleasant. I'll be traveling to this area at least once a month and will most certainly be ordering again!

Yelp
Came to Japanerio's to check it out and overall, the experience was pretty mid-level for me. We started with the spicy edamame and shrimp dumplings--nothing bad, but nothing memorable either. For nigiri, we ordered yellowtail, salmon, and two pieces of tuna. They were fine, but didn't really stand out compared to other sushi spots in the area. We also tried the Spicy Sugar Land roll and the Money Roll. Unfortunately, the Money Roll had way too much mayo and sauce for my liking, which completely masked the flavor of the fish. The food overall just didn't impress me as much as I was hoping. This spot has been around for a long time, and you can definitely tell from the interior--it feels a bit dated. That said, the service was the highlight of the night. Our waiter was amazing--very kind, attentive, and made us feel welcome. If anything, the staff really elevates the experience here, even if the food didn't quite hit the mark for me.

Yelp
I tried something new at Japaneiros instead of sushi I got the grilled chicken with vegetables and sweet potato fries. It was SO good. Super flavorful and moist chicken. The seasoning was very tasty. The whole dish was excellent. I'll get it again. Of course I had to get the crab puff appetizer. I love it so much I could just order it alone. Our server was top notch. We sat outside because the weather was beautiful. We were well taken care of. Sometimes outside diners are forgotten for spells of time but not us. It was perfect.

Yelp
My absolute favorite restaurant in Sugarland by far!!!! I love everything about this place, the sushi, the non-sushi items, the drinks, the ambiance, the service, it's all fantastic!!! When I was a local, I lunched or dined at Japaneiro's at least 3 times a week. Now every time I travel to Houston, I make sure to stop by to enjoy my favorite dishes which I miss tremendously. My go-to dishes are the avocado cream soup, the maduro plantain, the money roll, and of course the tres leches!!! The food is always so consistent and the sushi is so fresh! I need a Japaneiro's in California!!!! Maybe I should talk to the owners about that, LOL!!!

Yelp
First time at Japanieros, Giselle, was more than patient with my questions about the menu. The food itself had a lot of highlights: the dumplings were light and tasty, the veggie tempura was crisp and delightful, the toro came in sizable bites that melt in your mouth, and the fresa hamachi had a nice little kick. The seared truffle salmon was good but not great. The downside, and it's absolutely worth calling out is the sashimi sampler. The toro up-charge on it is criminal: $40. So high they have to double charge it on your receipt because their system will not let them up-charge you that much. Considering toro a la carte is $55 and the sampler is $42, it makes no sense to pay that much just for a couple pieces. Do yourself a favor and skip the sampler upgrade unless you're into souring your entire dining experience.

Yelp
Sara's service is always top tier! The food was just as good. I love to go there for the environment it's busy but always calms me down.

Yelp
They have a great lunch special with salad, starter,I went with the dumplings, and a variety for the main. I went with the shaggy dog roll. Our server was on point and the place is well decorated with indoor and outdoor seating.

Yelp
Dinner was great. I ordered the ATOMIC NACHOS Crunchy lavash chips topped with Monterey Jack cheese, crispy shrimp, chile de arbol salsa, nata cream, serrano peppers and guacamole! For the table. They tore it up before I could take the picture. Then I ordered THE NOODLE Udon Noodles stir-fried with your choice of protein, carrots, broccoli, onions, chili flakes, green onions and crispy garlic! With beef and shrimp. Delicious! Someone else ordered SEAFOOD RICE Stir-fried rice with shrimp, salmon, vegetables, herbs and spices served with sweet plantain slices. A couple of them order this. They said it was great. All seven of us were very satisfied! Ten stars.

Yelp
Japaneiros is a casual sushi spot in sugarland! It is a tried and true spot and I've been coming here for years. I moved out the city, moved back and it is still sooo good! My fav is the Fiji roll, the plantain on top really tops it off for me maybe because I'm African. The fresa hamachi will definitely open up your nostrils lol just a heads up! The service is also always pretty good! They have a pretty good happy hour and It's never too busy
google avatar

Yelp
100% recommend Food was amazing Especially those crab puffs Service was excellent Can get a bit noisy in there but loved the atmosphere! Seated quickly too for a Friday night.

Yelp
Great sushi, love the Latin spin. The location is perfect. I love everything they make & I'm so glad they're still in business after so many years at Town Square. I've celebrated so many birthdays there (celebrated my 23rd birthday there decades ago) & had random work lunches with co-workers. Its a fun place to go with friends or family. I highly recommend Japaneiros.

Yelp
Arrived for "Happiest Hour" and after two double Tito's martinis, I was indeed, happy enough to ignore the bartender's half-hearted effort to add more than three olives on the side. $5.00 for six (6) dumplings and $10.00 for an excellent "Sugar Land" roll. Very delicious, explains why I cannot seem to try anywhere else among the wonderful little plaza. Service from Miranda was friendly and fast

Yelp
Nice restaurant with kind staff and good food. They have a pretty good lunch special ($15 12-3pm if i'm not mistaken), and the fusion menu is very creative with something for everyone to enjoy. The food tasted good, but the portions are definitely on the smaller side.
google avatar

Woo K.

Yelp
I didn't quite under this fusion thing they got going on. The it didn't feel significant. I just saw a mish mosh of weird menu items trying to throw Latin flavors with Japanese. Everything we ordered was just ok. Nothing too crazy. And nothing impressive. Just ok.
google avatar

Mahwish S.

Yelp
Happy hour is everyday from 3-6 pm! Drinks are from $3-7 and food from $5-12. We ordered quite a bit off the happy hour menu and wound up full! For my drink, I tried the Prickly Pear mojito. It was ok. The alcohol content was not strong. It was more like a glass of juice. Less liquid would have made a better drink. For food, I ordered the dumplings (5), ceviche, toston, and the Sugarland roll. All my pics are the happy hour sizing. I enjoyed all the food. The dumplings were steamed and had a good filling. I loved that the ceviche was very chunky. I preferred to eat the ceviche on top of the toston instead of the chips it came with. I liked the freshness of the Sugarland roll. My stomach was happy. I like the idea of Asian Latin Fusion and feel it is very successful at this restaurant.

Yelp
Great upscale quality food with a nice outside sitting area and classy inside restaurant. Staff is well trained in customer service and this place won't disappoint so give it a try. Relaxed atmosphere and John went over the top in serving. Great menu and prepared with love and respect of their products. Thumbs up

Yelp
I don't know if I've ever reviewed this restaurant for yelp or not however, if I have not, it is a serious oversight on my part because it is a very, very good restaurant. As a general proposition, I would have lunch here and this is to the best of my recollection probably only the first time that I've had dinner However, regardless of lunch or dinner the food is absolutely superb. We had several tuna starters as well as some dumplings. From there, I had nagiri all of which was simply wonderful Uni, maguro, toro etc. All were generous cuts, and simply wonderful in freshness. The service was superb. The waiter was on top of everyone of our orders, and frankly his station was extremely busy, but he served us quite well to be very honest with you. I think a Saturday evening is probably the busiest timefor such a restaurant and our server was available to us at every moment. The ambience is quite nice nothing extraordinary, however quite nice and very clean. This is a dining experience that I would not miss to be very honest. After having written and posted this, I got a reply and a thank you from the business manager. It doesn't shock me that she is watching reviews of her restaurant and I just wanted to mention a couple omissions from my initial review. First was the bar I had smoky old fashions, which are I know a fad but in this case they're actually a very good smoky old-fashioned one where you can taste the maple in the old-fashioned. It's quite good well worth it. Secondly when you have a business establishment that is this good you forget all of the components that comprise a successful enterprise because it is so seamlessly executed, which is the case for this particular restaurant. It's not just dining. It is entertainment, and the performance is excellent.
google avatar

Adriana F.

Yelp
I love this spot, especially when I catch the daily happy hour from 3p-6p. They have rotating local beer for a steal of a price ($3)! I would opt for patio seating for a more relaxed dining experience. The servers are attentive and frequently visit the table. As for my food recommendations, top on the list is the Fiji roll. It is so flavorful with a plantain sauce drizzled overtop. Next would be the dumplings, which is also served with a delicious sauce. Overall, Japaneiro's is great and I will keep returning!
google avatar

Matthew P.

Yelp
My third time dining here, and I guess my favorite thing is that there's so many places that call themselves fusion but don't really do it. The fact that you can get central American cuisine, Japanese food, and true blendings of the two is really fun. We went with sushi this time and it was just terrific and reasonably priced. The brunch special bloody Mary was also the perfect amount of spicy. Our server made confident recommendations that all turned out to be excellent, and she was really nice. I'll be back next time I am in town.
google avatar

Matt C.

Yelp
I came here a couple months ago during a work trip because it was highly recommended. I am not typically a connoisseur of traditional sushi but there is plenty of other choices as well. I had the dumplings and a beef skewer entree that I don't see now on their current menu. As a first time visitor, they also comped me some plantain chips. Everything I had was absolutely delicious. The wait staff were extremely friendly and the ambience was amazing. Highly recommend.

San W.

Yelp
I was excited to try this restaurant for a lunch outing. Sadly it did not live up to the hype. Fried items (crab wontons & a roll) were greasy, over sauced, soggy. The Texan roll had nearly dried, old cilantro & barely any jalapeño. The tuna - AS LITTLE AS THERE WAS - was in no way quality enough to be considered 'sushi grade'. Cleanliness was an issue and service was just mid.
google avatar

Melany S.

Yelp
Great service by the staff and the food was amazing as always. Definitely a must when visiting sugarland.
google avatar

Yelp
Can't beat a choose 3 $15 lunch special. Recommendations: Seafood chupe Tequenos (they've been out a lot lately ) Dumplings Ika frita Pincho Seafood rice Happy hour is also a great feature and they have it 7 days a week which is a nice bonus Cucumber & coconut mojitos All the specialty shots and more
google avatar

Yelp
Great place with Japanese & Latin cuisine with several vegetarian & vegan options. My friends & I had the matcha mojito, miso soup, vegan dumplings, yuca roll & ensalada roll. The food was very good.

Yelp
Interesting combination of Japanese and Latin food. Located in a nice outdoor shopping center. Happy hour and lunch specials look really good and some of the drinks especially the non alcoholic ones were interesting. Empanadas, beef tataki and chicken sarten was delicious. Sushi and the rolls were okay. I'd probably go back for the happy hour or lunch specials.
google avatar

Jannie V.

Yelp
We are regulars at this restaurant. Love all the food specially the sushi. We always order a nirvana chef's way and today Amanda took care of us at the bar and boy she took it to another level. She made us a spicy/sweet sauce that she calls Amanda's sauce. It made every sushi bite taste way better! We will be looking for Amanda and her sauce in the future, yummy!
google avatar

Yelp
3.5/5 Japaneiro's is a solid sushi spot for the area. It's a popular spot in the Sugarland Towncenter. The first thing I noticed when I walked in was how busy it was for a Monday evening. The inside was also loud, maybe something about the acoustics of the restaurant or how tightly the tables are placed together. I love that there is a vegan menu, and I wanted to give it more stars but I thought the dishes themselves were just average. My favorite was the yuca roll which is the perfect dish to define japanese latin american fusion. It's a sushi roll which includes sour cream, avocado, and pico. The other dishes we tried were just ok (Planteroll, Yucca fries, and Vegan dumplings). The flavors were good but nothing unique. I wish they came with more tasty sauces.
google avatar

Dan G.

Yelp
Really good place to eat with the family on a Friday night. We were seated when we walked in and the food was delicious. Good selection of sushi and even tried unagi sauce for the first time.
google avatar

Yelp
We went here for my birthday as we've been here many other times, but we had an amazing time this time! Saralynn was our bartender and she is absolutely amazing! Got appetizer food and drinks and thanks to Saralynn.,I received an amazing surprise birthday dessert candle in all. Please make sure and go in and ask for Saralynn and sit at the bar, she will take amazing care of you!! Yes, they do have excellent food too. Oh, and one more thing congrats on the upcoming wedding may you both live happily ever after!
google avatar

Kinjal S.

Yelp
Came back here after 10 months. My original review was a few months late. Hoping today was a one off experience. Everything was mediocre. We got taquenos, yuca roll and the vegan tacos. Nothing was like how I remembered it. It took so long to get the yuca roll and the tacos. We thought they forgot about us. The whole experience was very mediocre.
google avatar

Ro R.

Yelp
I wish they had more locations because the food is so flavorful! There's an entire plant based menu on the back, I tried the planteroll and vegan dumplings. There's paid parking on the street or in the parking garage. They have covered outdoor seating as well.
google avatar

Mark H.

Yelp
Always great. Been here multiple times. I love their cerviche. Sushi is excellent. Rolls are all good. Located in downtown Sugarland at the Mall. Always busy and a bit noisy.

Tanmay G.

Yelp
Good sushi fresh cut and visible to diners eating inside the restaurant. Prices could be a bit economical but honestly worth it for special occasions.
google avatar

Sophia G.

Yelp
Our waitress was wonderful and very sweet. Me and my mom both got the lunch special and I tried the miso soup, ponzu chunks salad, plantain chips, and the Millenium and Tropic Thunder roll. I also got passion fruit juice which was kind of tart. The salad was like a delicious seaweed salad and the plantain chips were crispy but some too salty. I really enjoyed the tropic thunder roll but I recommend it if you enjoy spicy and sweet rolls.
google avatar

Rosalind C.

Yelp
I stopped in for a quick happy hour and I will definitely be back. I tried the crab puffs and the Fiji roll and bother were really good. The crab puffs weren't your typical fried puffs they tasted sweeter with more crab. The service was really great as well. I will say they don't have a lot of spirit forward options on the drink menu but what they do have it works. I would definitely recommend
google avatar

Mariah M.

Yelp
I heard a lot about this restaurant from coworkers and friends in the sugar land area, so I was glad that I finally got to try it out! I went during the Tuesday lunch hour and it was pretty packed. I tried the lunch special, which had plenty of options but I chose the plaintains + nata cream and dumplings for appetizers and the sushi sampler for my entree. The plaintains were good/as expected but the nata cream was not at all what I expected. It tasted like watered down sour cream. I definitely did not like it. The dumplings and sauce, however, were very good. Everyone at the table ordered some and really enjoyed them. For the sushi sample, I had spicy salmon and the nigiri included. The spicy salmon was good, but the tuna on the nigiri didn't taste fresh or something was a little off. I couldn't put my finger on it but the taste was off. Overall this place reminded me a lot of RA sushi in a way. Not the decor or menu but the price and quality of sushi. I wouldn't mind coming for a lunch again!
google avatar

Jason S.

Yelp
We sat outside and the weather was amazing. Food was excellent the reason for the -1 Star is that I've had the skewers a few times now, but this time they were really small in comparison to my other visits. I probably would have gotten sushi if I had known. But they were still good.
google avatar

Jodi V.

Yelp
Service and food was just ok - I think if you tried more of the Mexican flavors you may like this place more.

David W.

Yelp
Exceptional! I visited the location early evening on Saturday the 16th. Although crowded I was seated quickly by a welcoming hostess with a nice smile . I was ready to order right away. My server was a very pleasant gentlemen who was very welcoming and willing to help. Upon arrival of my guest we ordered our beverages and contemplated our meal. The avocado soup was delicious. The seafood rice was amazing. The best part was the sushi platter "chef selection" that was over the top. I almost finished it. Highly recommend this location if you are a fan of sushi. Well done. This is my go to spot!

Justin David D.

Yelp
The food was good, The service was delightful, and the wait was short. We sat outside on a nice evening and were pleased with the ambiance.

Yelp
My favorite go-to local sushi place that offers gluten free options. Great spot for business lunch/dinner.
google avatar

Yelp
I love their happy hour! Their margaritas are delicious and their shrimp dumplings pan fried or to die for. We drive across town just for their happy hour.
google avatar

Yelp
Was very pleased by the service at the sushi bar. Wide variety including Uni! Waiter was friendly and efficient. Great cocktail menu which is unusual for sushi or Mexican food joints

Yelp
We had a waiter named Logan. He was really nice. The restrooms are really clean. The door has been fixed that is very exciting. I recommend the el criollos sushi roll They're very accommodating

Najah K.

Yelp
I ordered 8 pieces of nigiri, 2 rolls, and dumplings. Unfortunately, I found a long piece of hair in my nigiri. I've been coming here for years and have never had this issue before. I'm quite disappointed, as I've always enjoyed the food and service.

Yelp
Lunch specials are $15 and have LOTS of options! A few tips: - you can get 2 appetizers instead of salad! - if you want a roll that is over the $13 limit, you can still get it and just pay the difference We got 3 rolls this past time: - black widow 5/5 - el gecko roll - 4/5 a little fried but too much sauce - New Zealand roll - 3/5 - too much cream cheese for me. Its kinda overwhelming the rest of the flavors in the roll. Appetizers: - tajadas - fried plantain that reminds me a lot of Churrascos - tequenos - hehe basically a fried mozzarella stick but in an egg roll casing; good but too heavy and not worth it - ika Frita - fried calamari sticks on a mixed green salad; definitely would get again - dumplings - nice thin wrapper but not what the filling was. And liked the dipping sauce, kinda like a honey mustard. Was also good on the tequenos!

Yelp
Food is great. Service is great and the ambiance is nice, however, I'm not a fan of the redecoration they have implemented recently, as i have been eating at Japaneiros for nearly two decades, and the change in atmosphere is a little jarring, the murals that used to decorate the walls have been replaced with vintage esque mirrors, and the flooring has been replaced with carpet, other than that however I am more than happy with this wonderful establishment. Though it lacks culture now.
