Jolene's - Review - Mission - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Jolene’s is a queer bar in the Mission, on a mission to create a safe space in the queer community. In particular, they seek to create a fun place for the sapphic community every night with events like their  “UHaul, for girls who love girls” party inside their big and brash space. Expect over-the-top lights, music, and sparkles seeking to create the perfect safe environment in a city that always needs more Sapphic spaces." - Ricky Rodriguez

Mission Queer Bar Jolene’s Hit With Lawsuit, Allegations of Abuse and Racism - Eater SF

"Jolene’s, a bar and restaurant that opened on the corner of 16th Street and Harrison back in 2018, is embroiled in multiple controversies, according to a Bay Area Reporter (BAR) account published Wednesday. Assistant editor John Ferrannini reports that the spot, which has been heralded by publications including Eater as one of the last lesbian-focused bars in the nation, is the focus of a bombshell lawsuit from one of its founding owners, as well as “anonymous allegations of employee mistreatment, manipulation, racism, and cover-ups of alleged sexual assault.”" - Eve Batey

How America’s Lesbian Bars Are Surviving a Pandemic | Eater

"Opened in San Francisco about a year ago to fill a void for queer people excluded from male-centric bars, the owner, Jolene Linsangan, describes the first year as a “rollercoaster.” To survive lockdown she shifted to creative community-minded offerings: takeout brunch with rainbow pancakes and a Hawai‘i-themed menu from her chef, to-go cocktails sealed with a boba-style machine, and regularly streamed performances over Zoom with performers’ Venmo links. For reopening she plans to sell tickets for dinner-and-a-show seating to keep distance while preserving live entertainment." - Meghan McCarron

Google
As an openly queer femme, this is the best nightclub for feminine identities in the Bay Area LGBTQ+ community. The venue was such a safe space and the bartender was considerate. I danced my heart out, played pool with some friends, hyped up club dancers, received hugs from other sapphics, easily made new friends, drank a lot, and ate ramen. I genuinely enjoyed my experience. Not many LGBTQ+ nightclubs are feminine-friendly spaces. Thank you so much for existing.

Google
Am so grateful I got to experience this place with my partner! 100% recommend if you’re looking for a safe place to connect with people and are in the LGBTQ+ community.

Google
We paid $14 for two lemonades and the bartender made the price on the spot which was kinda weird but that’s ok! The people were very nice and the service was overall very respectful. The dancers were amazing too! Definitely coming back but not using the bar services!

Google
We tried to go on a Saturday night. There was a $15 cover charge that the door person failed to inform us about. Once inside the hostess that was taking payment for entry was very rude. As queer women we were excited to visit SF and the only lesbian bar in the city, but left with a stale taste in our mouths. We ended up leaving without paying the cover and do not plan to try and visit again.

Google
I had such an amazing time at Jolene’s that I was so so so disappointed to see that they charged the wrong amount on my credit card and added extra on the tip for themselves even though I remember clearly writing in a different amount. Times are tough but please don’t scam your supportive patrons :( we bought a lot of drinks so trying to pull one over us on top of that is so dishonest

Google
Such a fun Sunday Brunch! They had eggs, bacon, sausage, waffles (yes, that’s a waffle), fruit, potatoes and croissants. Type of sausage meat wasn’t listed. Complimentary mimosa comes with brunch, and overall it seemed worth it for $40! The performances were awesome as well but a little disorganized; I think they could refine the event down to be 2 hrs long. Also seating is very close and not conducive for allowing people to sit comfortably.

Google
Went to brunch yesterday for my mom’s 76th birthday. It was an absolute blast. We had so much fun and she was treated like a queen. Thank you to the whole amazing crew at Jolene’s. We will be back!!

Google
Always want to show love to my queer spaces but paying $40 to get denied entry and have to stand in line with people who didn’t pay for a ticket ahead of time is absurd. Why did I pay for a ticket?? Thanks for swindling me Jolene’s, happy Pride.

Yelp
I met my wife here I understand my experience is very rare but shout out to these small businesses that provide a safe space for queers to dance and mingle~

Yelp
Good drinks but mediocre music most of the time so it goes dead just past midnight the times I've gone. Place glorifies and worships the bar top dancers a little too much in my opinion. If I cared about that, I'd go back to a strip club and get more action. I think this place definitely caters to and attracts a certain demographic of queer/sapphic women that is on the hipster/Bay Area transplant side with a splash of locals in the mix. It's usually popping during Pride week by any other time is eh.
google avatar

Yelp
Oh how I wish this bar existed in South Florida. Just to be surrounded by queer people (mostly lesbians) I went by myself and everyone was very welcoming. My only slight is that the music could be less house music and more variety. But overall, a really great bar, drinks, and tacos. If I lived here, I would make this my local bar.

A M.

Yelp
We walked in and walked right out because it stinks like urine. No thanks. Makes me think the whole place is dirty.
google avatar

Yelp
good vibes and good music! they serve late night tacos and have a cute pool table! the dancers are also really good! i liked the lights and how spacious this bar is

Yelp
I'm not even going to say much... Do not come here. It is not a safe space for queer people. If you want to know why. Feel free to reply. I was going frequent but I had to stop... the owner called my bf weird & I haven't been back since. & will never return... I met some great people there tho...

Yelp
Food & entertainment is amazing here. The shows they put on is amazing. They have like 5 different performers. The vibe is a total turn up. You're never bored. Food is real good as well. The owner is very nice. The setting is dark & club-like. You order by the scan menu on the table.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing entertainers, clean establishment for the most part, fast bartenders, tasty drinks. Only downside is that the line was super long but that's to be expected during the last weekend of pride month. My group and I got to Jolene's around 9:13pm and waited almost 2 hours, but the drinks and atmosphere alone made up for it in my opinion.
google avatar

Christina H.

Yelp
Years later and this is still my favorite queer bar. Jolene's throws incredible events for SF PRIDE weekend and is home to insane lineups of performances, DJs, queer parties. Don't sleep on Jolene's / Uhaul!!!

Yelp
What an experience. I came here on a Friday night with some bi friends and a gay guy friend. It was like 90% lesbians/bi girls and 10% everyone else, including gay men. It's in a warehouse-type area so there really isn't much outside. There's some street parking around. Outside the door, a security guy runs a metal detector wand over you. At the front you're greeted by a super tall drag bouncer who collects your $10 cover, cash only. The first area inside is the bar and seating, with a pink pool table. It's decently roomy and has comfy breathing space. Prices for shots were pretty average for a bar, like $12ish. When you go farther in, there's the DJ booth and dance floor. We requested Doja Cat and Beyoncé by holding up text on our phones but the DJ said no. I don't think they do any requests anyway because the DJ booth is so high up. The vibes here are very, very SF hipster gay. Loud walls, quirky neon signs, various dancers on the bar, everyone cheering for everyone. All the girls were really open to dancing with everyone if you're tryna find someone to dance with.

Dj W.

Yelp
Cover is $100 a person tonight, finest chicks though totally worth the long wait around the block to dance with hot girls , hits max capacity at 200 every weekend

Yelp
Brunch review. I've been to brunch several times before but this is my first time having the new buffet. As always the performers were amazing. Here are the issues we had: 1. We got there around 12 to eat brunch, but the food was already cold since there was no heat source keeping it warm. The food used to be so good and now it's not worth the $25 they are charging. The tater tots were the smiley face ones that you yet at Costco and they weren't as good as the ones they used to serve. 2. We ordered a spiked coffee drink we had before that was amazing, but this time it had barely any coffee in it and tasted watered down. Not worth the $14 they were charging. 3. The show actually ended early at 2:30 since there weren't as many performers as usual. For the amount they charged, I left feeling disappointed. I really hope they fix these issues since they used to have one of the best brunches in the Bay Area.

Yelp
The music was so good, dancers and bartenders were amazing, being surrounded my women and queer people it was such a safe place and had a great birthday celebration here
google avatar

Yelp
I opened a tab last Saturday 4/12 and they made a fraudulent charge on my credit card. I wonder if they signed my name and how they got away with it. I called my bank and it looks like it is not the first time they hear about Jolenes doing this. Be careful do not give your credit card to the bartenders.

Yelp
So grateful for Jolene's! The drinks, the ambience, the service, the events, and Jolene herself is incredible. This place is iconic and legendary. It's not just a bar, it's a place of connection to community, a place to make memories, and it's a foundation upon which the queers of future generations can stand upon.
google avatar

Yelp
If you plan to have a Girls night out on a Friday, Jolene's bar is definitely the place to be. This was my first time at a queer/lesbian bar and I had such a fun time! The bar staff were super attentive, the dancers were entertaining, and the dance room was packed with all around good vibes. Also, say hello to the beautiful Jolene herself! I am an old colleague of hers and I was surprised she remembered me 6-7 years later. LOL! Gender inclusive environment, reasonably priced drinks, pool table, Sunday brunches, what's not to love!? Queer or not, come support this awesome woman owned establishment!

Chris T.

Yelp
Great bar and decent service! I think they are generally a "queer" bar and seems to be mostly lesbian but the vibe is generally somewhat welcoming. I was surprised that the food was actually pretty good too!

Yelp
jag flyger in från sverige för att uppleva en lesbisk burleskshow och de gör till och med laxtoast som vi gör hemma det var inget som vi har hemma i sverige. Jag skulle komma hit igen på semester för att äta brunch igen för att se showen
google avatar

Yelp
Brunch review. Tickets said free complimentary mimosa with ticket, the bartender said they didn't do that. Lol. We bought two bottles of champagne so it doesn't matter but whack that you offer that and then bartenders say no, we don't do that. Loool. The lady that hosted was great, show was chill. Food was decent, but for as many people as they had, the food kept running out and it was all you can eat.
google avatar

Yelp
Been trying to get to Jolene for forever.. i lucked up and had bar sets for the show on Juneteenth.. @womanmonolopysf put the show of all show..burlesque drag.. .. amazing show from start to finish.. it was a vibe a twerked from my seat and everything.. omg I was amazed .. can't wait to come back again... my only down fall was the food .. definitely bar snacks which was fine .. I was expecting more of menu other thanks basic breakfast.. pancakes eggs and bacon.. dnt forget to add your seat number when purchasing from the app... I spilled my drink took over 20 mins to get help and I was sitting at the bar.. it's like the waitress zoned out to just making drinks and not paying attention to people sitting at the bar.. but I definitely come back

Yelp
Love this place. Great drinks, dancers and ambiance. Very nice venue but the bathrooms could use a little bit of cleaning

Yelp
I loved the coyote queer! One of reasons why I go! Bar does get pretty hectic and they take awhile to get the order but overall def a good gay bar!

Yelp
Sunday drag queen brunch was amazing!!!!!!! Busy, raunchy, amazing! Food was good, drinks were great, performances were on point!

Yelp
Great spot for community and a fun night! Met many friends here. The owner, and front door staff are always so friendly and welcoming

Yelp
I feel so sad for the performers leaving this review because I'd give them a 10 star if I could, but Jolene's as a whole needs to change a few things - as our experience for 'brunch' was terrible for the first hour or so of arriving. First off, there was a huge mixup with the tables and we were being scolded by the staff for sitting on the actual table that had our names on it (nothing to do with us, someone put too many chairs at the table or something, we still have no idea why there was such confusion) and then after everyone was seated there was no apology for the mixup (which was on their end and had nothing to do with us) Secondly I wasn't expecting Michelin star cuisine but for the price, the food was sub par. (And took over an hour to get to us, we were f****ing starving!) don't advertise brunch if you can't serve it. The app to order was a nightmare and for the first 30min, everyone was trying to figure it out instead of enjoying each others company (can't order drinks without the app so no one was even drinking yet which would have numbed the tension) the app was only working for a few peoples phones so we had to combine orders which was also confusing and time wasting. (Get rid of the app for at-least drinks... or give everyone a free drink when they come in if you are understaffed) Or download the 'SmartTab app' now before arriving so you're ready to order some mediocre food. I liked the divey feel of the place, and the host, Alotta Boutte, was absolutely fabulous. She was everything you could want in a host/performer/singer and a whole lot more! All the performers were amazingly entertaining and talented as hell and would definitely recommend coming for them and throwing all your dollar bills at them. Knowing they get paid made me change my review from a 1 to a 3. They made my afternoon. Again. I'd give the performers a 10 star on here if I could. But the vibe and service was so shit when we got there I was disgusted and appalled and hugely turned off. Very conflicted writing this review, but hoping it can help serve as a wake up call to management and change something for the better at Jolene's, because it has potential.

Yelp
During Pride weekend Pros: - $3 Jell-O shots (delicious!!) - Gender neutral bathrooms - Self serve water fountain without a line - Amazing, welcoming, and fun people all around! Everyone I met was a great time - Relatively easy to order a drink at the bar - Bathrooms were so clean and fully stocked with paper towels and toilet paper the whole night Cons: - $50 cash cover charge - Only 3 bathrooms stalls
google avatar

Leanne G.

Yelp
This is a great place to come if you want to get hit on by men. Half of the place is men and they don't hesitate to get between you and the people you're with. One even going so far as to stand in front of the bathroom, hitting on women as they walked in. Security chatting at the door, none inside.
google avatar

Asha L.

Yelp
So fun!! So queer!! Go go go :) Fun, inclusive, judgement free bar with great vibes, people, and dancing space + a pool table. A place you must visit if you visit san fran

Yelp
This place makes you feel very safe and welcomed. Everyone is friendly their karaoke nights are so fun too.

Yelp
Perfect place to be tonight *rainbow* Love the vibes, staff was nice, music was 70s fun, line was long, inside wasn't as packed as it could've been which was a relief. Thanks for creating for this safe loving space. Had a great time on the dance floor *disco dancing*

Yelp
Love supporting places that provide queer and inclusive spaces! We went last night for the coyote show, and it was AWESOME. The drinks weren't overpriced and were good. Didn't get to try the food though so will definitely come back for it later. Thank all the sweet and friendly staff for a fun and safe night!
google avatar

Ashley T.

Yelp
Jolene's is a queer safe space! Easy access off the highway and plenty of street (safeish) parking. Bar itself I've only been to for Sunday Drag/Burlesque brunch and I've yet to be disappointed. Great bar staff and the breakfast burrito is delicious. Also the deviled eggs when you can get them! Fun photo booth and clean all gender bathrooms! Definitely a great place to hangout and meet all your club bar needs. There's something for everyone.

Vanessa R.

Yelp
i love being surrounded by women, bartenders are super nice too. great staff and music, great drinks too i was super happy to get drunk here
google avatar

Nick S.

Yelp
Fun environment, not super packed but everyone there was cool, the dj was alright but she didn't read the crowd super well so people didn't really know how to dance to what she was playing.

Robin B.

Yelp
Fun bar for womxn who like womxn, glad there is one in sf since most places are gay (male) bars with just one lesbian night a week/month. The wallpaper is very Instagram-worthy and they have two different areas for mingling: one smaller dance room and one large main area where the bar is and pool table. Loved the go-go dancers they hired for Saturday night, they were incredibly athletic and got the crowd pumped. $15 cover which was steep for me as a tourist but actually pretty reasonable for the city. Same for drinks; overpriced if they were served anywhere else but SF. They only take cash for cover and there is an atm inside. I was pleased by the lack of cis-straight guys inside, as I have been to lesbian bars where there were creepy guys that clearly weren't there as an ally. Patrons seemed friendly and very queer, exactly what I was hoping for. Only negative was that the bathroom stalls were limited and one of them was being used by a couple having $3x lol. I would def go again, but try to beat cover (it was at 9 I think?)

Yelp
Jolen's is too expensive for what they offer and the bartender was extremely rude. My two friends and I, all LGBT minority males, decided to come here after a long but eventful day at Dore. We were hungry and decided to end our day at Jolene's. I'm a strong believer in supporting our queer spaces in any way we can. We sat down at the bar, ordered some food and 3 drinks. The total was $95, and with tip was about $115. That's pretty pricey for a couple of small bar bites but I just shrugged it off. Then we're chatting with a fabulous lesbian next to us and decided to get 4 shots. The total came out to $44! We offered one to our bartender, but they declined and said they aren't allowed to drink at the bar. 5 minutes later, I see them doing a shot with another bartender. I'm guessing we must have really irked them because they were rude from the beginning. As I'm trying to stack the empty plates of food, I accidentally knock over my drink and my glass shatters everywhere. The bartender rolls her eyes and starts cleaning. I apologize and they said that's fine and continues to just be really upset. It's a weird vibe for a place that has a sign that says "You are safe here" After finishing cleaning, they look me up and down, sets a plastic cup of water and walks away. They did not offer me a replacement drink or even asks if I'd like to purchase a new one. If you think I'm too drunk because I accidentally knocked over a glass, then you also shouldn't be serving me from the start. The gesture was off-putting, to say the least. As we walked out, the front door person was very sweet, apologized and offered us free entry back in. We politely declined and left. Then the manager overheard me outside on the phone about how terrible this bar is and they convinced us to come back in and gave us a round of drinks. The manager made up for the rude bartender but I won't be back. In reading the other reviews, it sounds like rude bartenders are a problem at Jolene's. It's sad because with how expensive the drinks were and how rude the bartender was, I'll never come back.

Shelly M.

Yelp
I received pretty decent service and the overall ambiance was vibe-y. The food was good, but not great. However there are some true gems who frequent this bar and that made all the difference in the world.

Matt M.

Yelp
This place is hands down the place to be!!!! The food is amazing and the staff are so attentive and chill ! Not to mention they have one of the best Sound systems in the city! If you haven't been make sure to check it out and be prepared to dance !!!

Puss P.

Yelp
The friendliest place ever!!! Yelp is forcing me to write more but what else do you even still need to know?
google avatar

Jude D.

Yelp
Thank dog there's a new dyke/queer bar in SF. This has been long needed. There was an excellent drag show when I went, and the brunch of aperol spritz and smashed potatoes was delicious. Most importantly it's queer centered, so give this place your dollars!

Yelp
If you're in the Mission area and want to find a place for tasty drinks, snacks, and accommodation for a big group -- come to Jolene's! I came here on a Thursday evening with a group of coworkers. They easily accommodated all of us (~20 ppl). There's a few medium high tables and small tables plus bar seating. The layout of the space allows for people to roam around and mingle easily. I'm a fan of the COCKTAILS here. Tried the JOLENE'S MARGARITA and the hibiscus agave added a nice touch to this drink! The Pretty in Pink was also tasty with the addition of passion fruit. You can tell the drinks focused on great flavor and unique ingredients, which made me OK with paying $$ for them. Jolene's also offers FOOD here! I'm always a fan of having some kind of substantial snacks when going out for drinks. Some tasty bites include: ROSEMARY FRIES (ugh the garlic shoyu aioli is so good), AVOCADO EGG ROLLS, and POPCORN CHICKEN. My favorite was the chicken -- they use dark meat so the bites are extra juicy! Food is also at $$ SF prices. Portions are a bit on the smaller side. Some things I hope Jolene's will add in the future: happy hour pricing and being open more nights! Overall I'm happy the Misison area has a place where big groups of people can come enjoy quality food and drinks, especially for queers in need of a safe space. I hope Jolene's will stick around!

Latashia G.

Yelp
Thank the goddesses Jolene's has arrived. The food is banging the staff is friendly, it's off the beaten path going full force like a well oiled machine for the queer, gay, trans, POC community!!!!! I highly suggest heading over and jumping on their brand new BRUNCH! The gluten free Chicken and Waffles is the SMACK! SLAY BABY SLAY!!!!!

Yelp
I made a drag brunch reservation at 11:45 on Open Table, and Open Table allowed us to make a reservation. After waiting in line, it turned out we needed tickets from EventBrite and their website did not mention anything like that. We got turned down and was offered no peace solution other than being in the waiting room. We were here to eat, not to stand. Hopefully they fix their website soon so this doesn't happen again.
google avatar

Raven W.

Yelp
The drag brunch gets 5 stars across the boards for entertainment but as far as the food goes??? I preferred the option to order food vs this drab buffet... like the options were not plentiful enough, not many options. Not to mention they don't keep it sufficiently restocked it's so packed in there you can hardly move between the tables to get up/down for food or ordering drinks etc... no table service so you really are either ordering in bulk upfront super early on in the brunch or you're waiting until half way through the show when they take a quick break to order more drinks. Other than that you should go check out their u-haul nights and any other nights, it's worth it to have the experience for sure. Anyways enjoyed the brunch entertainment not the food, the end. I also didn't like not having the option to just order drinks and watch the entertainment without having to pay for the "buffet."

Juliette F.

Yelp
Tonight was kind of unfriendly. Felt like the security was a little too trolling when I was just chilling at the bar. I normally don't have an unfriendly experience at this establishment so this was a first for me.

Roger R.

Yelp
Jolene's bar is amazing ! All the general vibe was of respect, acceptance and fun! The drag show was full of talent and the host and personnel were very nice with me and my friends that were visiting SF.

Yelp
Shittiest bar I've ever Been too. I've been A bartender f or 26 years. I ve even bartender at this location when it was under a different name. The bartenders here suck. Because the single male bartender gets offended whenever you give the female bartender a complement. I had to whistle to get they're attention because apparently. They were so involved in talking to each other Even if you get them a $20 tip. The single male bartender there needs to get the fuck out of there. There's no DJ. This is an iPad. So there's no really good music dancing. Don't waste your time with this place. Trust me I'm not lying

Adriana G.

Yelp
Had a great time at this bar .. the energy was very positive the bartenders were attentive and the music was fun!!.. it was nice that the kitchen was still open and the nachos and truffle fries were yummy and the prices were fair ... I would definitely return when in the area ..
