***THIS IS NOT ALL YOU CAN EAT (AYCE).
***DEPENDING ON THE MEAT YOU CHOOSE, YOU'RE LOOKING AT SPENDING $24 to $33 DOLLARS FOR DINNER (not including tax and tip).
I really wanted to rate this higher (maybe a 3.5 or 4 out of 5), but as I was slurping up the Joon Dashi and Tokyo Spice broth mixture that I was instructed to mix into the boiling hot water, and looking at my single plate of veggies and two sauces, I could not help but compare my experience to other hot pot restaurants in Los Angeles (both Japanese and Korean- and one Chinese).
Shabuya in Westlake is all you can eat and is basically the same price as Joon Shabu Shabu (I believe it's about $32 bucks these days). You get way more selections in terms of sides, and you can keep ordering meat if you're not full (without additional cost because it's AYCE).
Momo Paradise in Arcadia is also all you can eat with basically the equivalent price (about $35), plus they also include dessert. They offer not easy to come across drink flavors and boba (which I have never seen before at a hot pot location). You also have the option of choosing and having multiple broths as opposed to just one single broth flavor like in Joon Shabu Shabu.
Shabu Shabu House in Little Tokyo uses excellent ingredients (meat was delicious), their broth is far superior than Joon Shabu Shabu, and it is about the same (slightly cheaper) than Joon Shabu Shabu (Shabu Shabu House is between $25 to $29 dollars). Shabu Shabu House is probably the most comparable to Joon Shabu Shabu as it is not all you can eat and Japanese, BUT you can taste the quality difference.
Then there's Hai Di Lao Hot Pot which is expensive and I'll probably only return for a special occasion, but the broths that they offer are the tastiest in all of Los Angeles. For me, paying a higher price for higher quality flavors, experience and taste is worth it.
Okay so here's a breakdown of how it works and what you can get:
Meat options are: angus beef, pork, chicken, prime chuck roll, and seafood (there's also a vegetarian option).
You'll need to select how many ounces of meat you want for dinner (price will vary depending on how much meat you want).
With your order of hot pot, you will get assorted veggies, black rice, udon or ramen noodles, and 2 dipping sauces. And that's it.
Dipping sauces are: Ponzu, Goma, Soyo, Ninniku, and Umami. I liked the Ponzu sauce and Soyo sauce.
Since I wanted prime chuck roll, there were three options:
(1) 6oz Regular Prime Chuck Roll ($26)
(2) 8oz Large Prime Chuck Roll ($29)
(3) 9oz Extra Large Prime Chuck Roll ($30)
I ordered the extra large prime chuck roll. I know, I'm a little piggy (or should I say cow...).
All in all, I did enjoy my meal, but as I said above, I have had a better experience with a greater return in value.
Also, Joon Shabu Shabu is located in an excellent spot right next to the Americana and other dessert spots, stores, and restaurants. This makes it an ideal place to hang out with friends or family or your partner because you can just walk around and explore before or after your meal.
Will I return? Probably not of my own initiative, but if someone should invite me, yes I would return.
