Best Restaurants in Cobble Hill and Carroll Gardens | Eater NY

"If there’s a restaurant serving better onigiri in Brooklyn, we haven’t found it. Juju Cafe’s rice balls come wrapped in plastic, but they’re made to order with ingredients that are hot to the touch. The flavors include Spam, pickled plum, shrimp tempura, and spicy roe — but the restaurant will fill them with any combination of ingredients on request, so long as they’re in the kitchen." - Robert Sietsema

JuJu Cafe & Deli - Review - Cobble Hill - New York - The Infatuation

"Ah yes, the sushi burrito. The early 2010s trend that we thought died is back—alive and well at Cobble Hill’s JuJu Cafe & Deli. Come to this Japanese market to delight in an overstuffed tuna poke burrito made to order. The burrito, by definition, has a lot going on. But it works for a quick, reliable meal if you’re down for a thick, layered beauty. We like ours stuffed with cucumber, avocado, and hunks of spicy-mayo-doused shrimp tempura or tuna poke. While you wait for your burrito, grab a salmon onigiri for later, browse the impressive selection of Japanese gummies, and try to win a stuffed animal from the claw machines in the back. Raw fish purists, keep it moving. photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte Pause Unmute" - Willa Moore

Tokuyamatcha & Onigirazu Serves Portable, Affordable Japanese Rice Sandwiches in the East Village | Eater NY

"At Juju Cafe in Cobble Hill I noticed they market their versions as “sushi burritos,” with flavors like shrimp tempura, bacon-egg-and-cheese, fried tofu with kimchi, and a buttermilk chicken with onion rings — a framing that feeds into the playful, existential question of whether onigirazu is a sandwich, while underscoring that freshness and properly cooked rice are what separate one maker from another." - Emma Orlow

The Best Dishes Eater Editors Ate This Week, May 2023 - Eater NY

"Juju Cafe offers a wider selection of onigiri that’s made to order, rather than pre-made and wrapped in plastic like at most Japanese grocers, for about twice the cost. I tried the umeboshi (fermented plum), mentaiko (cod roe), and spicy tuna mayo versions ($4 to $6 each). The onigiri were warm and generously stuffed, made up of about as much plum and seafood as rice. Other fillings include Spam and egg, buttermilk fried chicken, and tofu teriyaki." - Eater Staff

Google
Wow… Their shrimp tempura rice ball was absolutely amazing, and I don’t even usually like sushi. The young lady working the cashier was so sweet and friendly. She even put on gloves and helped teach me how to properly open my rice ball. Don’t miss out on this little hole in the wall- I’ll definitely be back!

Google
Great selection and great staff! Also the Sakura Rose milk tea is incredible

Google
If I could rate 10 stars I would. I got the shrimp tempura sushi burrito and it absolutely blew my mind. I usually don’t like avocado but this altered my brain chemistry. The portion is HUGE and it’s so packed with flavor. Staff was super friendly and attentive. Definitely worth the price and the wait.

Google
It is critical that you understand how good the veggie kimbap is. I work in Koreatown almost daily and I have yet to find veggie kimbap that's nearly as good and I am certainly still trying, a lot! Every week! Same with the onigiri. I have yet to have a onigiri from here that was anything less than perfect. They are made to order - it really matters, I can taste the love. Skip the big name down the block and support an incredible local business. The snack selection is well curated, the staff are delightful wonderful people - but I want, nay, I NEED you to understand this about the veggie kimbap. It's very important, appreciate what you have in Juju's.

Google
my favorite onigiri i’ve tried in nyc! especially because there are many amazing vegan options, i love the tofu teriyaki one,, the tofu is perfectly crunchy. the tea is also great, we ask for less sugar and there is a good balance of flavor. we also won a toy from the claw machine which was super fun! the staff is also very nice when i asked them for tips about winning the toy 😂

Google
Great shop for onigiri. Haven’t tried anything else yet but the onigiri I tried were really great. Give them a try!

Google
Amazing little Asian grocery!! My new favorite local spot! 💖 So happy to support this Asian owned small family business!! They offer affordable rice balls 🍙 with plenty of delicious vegetarian and vegan options and other yummy smelling foods!

Amanda

Google
I ordered a mango milk bubble tea, there’s barely any mango flavor. The avocado kani rice ball is good. Will go back for the food but not the bubble tea, there’re plenty of cha spots.

Yelp
Stopped by Juju's for a quick bite to eat and a boba. Almond milk tea with coffee jelly and a spam and egg kimbop was the to-go order. The place is really clean and properly stocked with snacks. There are also stuffed animals in the window to draw kids in. I found the bench in the middle of the restaurant a bit odd, perhaps it goes indoors on rainy dayz (which this definitely was). Service was quick, friendly, and recommendations were on point.

Yelp
Came by for a quick post workout bite before heading into the city. The rice balls are made to order so expect a small wait especially if they get a little bit busier. The salmon mayo was a bit more mayo heavy than I prefer, but they pack it with a lot of salmon. Shrimp tempura was good. A little spicy, and still somewhat crispy. The rice is piping hot, but because of that the seaweed isn't as crispy once it's packaged. The rice was cooked with too much water, so it was mushier than preferred for me. They sell a lot of different Japanese and Korean snack items as well if you're looking for other things. They do have kimbap and other foods as well. A solid spot for a small snack or light meal.

Yelp
Tasty sushi burrito at $14.50! You get a lot of food and it is of great value. It is a great pick me up for lunch and it checks all the boxes when it comes to value, creativity, and generosity. While I cannot eat this food all the time, it was still great to enjoy, even if it is somewhat off the beaten path. The interior is very much like a small Asian deli. It offers food options but also other market like options, drinks, and other small things. There are small tables to sit at, but this is more grab and go rather than sit and eat. Simple, effective, and subtle. Another three words to throw into this efficient little restaurant in Boerum Hill.

Yelp
Me and my bf have been on a search for the best onigiri in Brooklyn and Juju is the winner by far!! Just the right amount of filling, the perfect temperature, the seaweed is crispy and the chili garlic oil they offer adds such a satisfying crunch. I got the salmon. My bf got the shrimp sushi burrito (he's never had one before he was amazed). And said that was delicious too. Omg I dream about it! Service is quick and staff is friendly too. It was so hot that day so we ate inside. It was pretty hot inside there too but the food was so scrumptious it didn't bother me one bit. Will be back!

Yelp
Cute little deli - a real gem! The food is affordable and made to order, but the wait is worth it! I ordered the veggie kimbap, and it was delicious and fresh!
google avatar

Yelp
a hidden gem in my opinion Ju Ju cafe makes the most amazing kimbap and onigri/ rice balls. Every order is made fresh and made to order. my favorite offering is their sushi rito aka a burrito but sushi!! I always get the shrimp tempura one and it is good everytime! their fried finger foods are great too, from the mozzerella sticks to the curly fries to the shrimp shumai! always a banger every time!
google avatar

Elisa H.

Yelp
Great service. Smiley employees who seem genuinely happy to be there. However my black sesame honeydew bubble tea left much to be desired. Cute plushies and snacks at a premium. Want to try their Asian snacks too but I might wait this one out.

Katherine B.

Yelp
Such a perfect snack and SO reasonably priced! The poke/chicken/pork rice balls were $5-6. The rice balls came out warm and so fresh. Fun Japanese and groceries to shop while you're waiting too

Yelp
I was only there for a second but it's a cute store with a sweet feel to it. We took a second to order and our food was out in just 2 or 3 minutes. The bubble tea was delicious and the Thai iced bubble tea didn't have the artificial orange color most have but still tasted just as good. For anyone in the Carroll gardens area looking for a small Asian snack shop/ onigiri/ bubble tea place this is the place to go.

Yelp
This was a nice little spot located in the downtown Brooklyn area. I will say they get a lot of business from students in the area. I was excited to find a place that made sushi burritos so, I ordered 1 Spicy Tuna Poke Burrito and 1 Shrimp Tempura Rice Rito. The Spicy Tuna Poke Burrito had plenty of stuff on it but barely any actual Tuna. The Shrimp Tempura Rice Rito was mostly fried batter without shrimp in it but thank God they add crab sticks on this item otherwise it's a complete waste of money. These items or too pricey not to put enough Tuna and Shrimp in them. In addition to this the amount of rice used is an overkill and fools you to believe you have a hearty sushi burrito and rice Rito food items. Please workers/owners stuff these items with more meat and make with less rice. I could see the possibilities of these items being great menu options if they add more meat and use less rice. So please don't be fooled by the size of them because they use too much rice when making these items. Last but not least I hope they really pulled the small bags of shrimp chips off their shelves after I brought it to the cashier's attention that they have expired dates of September 2023 and it's now December 2023/soon will be 2024. Despite this I wouldn't say don't go here. The workers were really nice and you have to keep in mind it is not an actual Sushi Restaurant. This place is more like a neighborhood deli type place that sells some sushi menu items (includes finger foods and quick bites). I will try something different or make specific food request if they can accommodate this should I go back. Be sure to look at item expiration dates before purchasing and maybe buy something like a bubble drink or try another menu item.

Yelp
I stumbled upon this Deli and I'm SO HAPPY THAT I DID! You can buy all these Asian to cook or eat. They have a pretty expansive bubble tea menu. They also have this rice balls which are like sushi burrito or sorts but sooo much better. I've had the salmon and the shrimp tempura and it was finger licking good! The bubble tea is tasty as well. I'm not a fan of diary so I opted for the mango jasmine tea with mango jellies. I haven't looked back since. I also like to try the different snacks. The employees are pretty friendly and helpful in choosing. My favorite so far is the spicy chili chips and I'm going to do the pizza chips next!
google avatar

Glenn C.

Yelp
They have unique but very overpriced rice balls/onigiri what are quite tasty. The boba tea was unfortunately powdered and overly sweet and I wouldn't really recommend it at least from what I tried but they have a pretty reasonable selection of drinks also. I'm unsure what someone means by their rice balls usually being cold from other places because this sounds off to me.

Jessica C.

Yelp
Love juju's rice balls and plates, and especially love that they are hot and made to order. My favs are the salmon and the radish/shiitake. My only gripe is that they aren't open on Sundays .

Yelp
A month ago, I had no idea what onigiri was, and now I can't go a week without one. This is a tasty little rice ball similar to hand rolls filled with a variety of ingredients, made fresh with every order and individually wrapped. So far, I have tried kani avocado, gyu-don (thingly sliced beef and sautéed onions), and shrimp tempura onigiri - don't ask me which one is my favorite because I loved all of them, especially with a splash of soy sauce. These rice balls are a convenient, cheap, quick snack for times when I'm not hungry enough for a poke bowl or have time for a sushi order at one of the countless sushi restaurants around. I usually eat my onigiri right on the bench outside the store, as I gawk at Smith Street passerby's. I love unique snacks and weird chip flavors, the weirder the better. At Juju's, I can get dried calamari, honey-butter flavored potato chips, and an array of green tea flavored candy, all in one place. That makes me happy. Actually browsing all of Juju's fun Asian snacks for an inappropriately long time makes me happy. Juju's menu also offers sandwiches, all day breakfast, wraps, salads, ramen, dumplings, rice bowls, bubble tea, fresh juice and smoothies. I do wish they had online delivery or even paper menus available because calling to order is quite an outdated concept in this day and age. Dare I say it? This is my new favorite deli. Juju is the ray of sunshine Smith Street was desperately needing.

Super B.

Yelp
great little deli. really good food. onigirazu and boba were really good. there are two small tables, and a bench in the middle of the deli to wait for food. nicest people. def recommend.

Vince C.

Yelp
We've tried the Kimbap and rice balls (onigiri) here and they've all been delicious! Generous portion sizes and very affordable. They're made to order as well so they're always fresh. Highly recommended
google avatar

Stanley C.

Yelp
Had the spam & egg and the classic spicy tuna. The spam & egg was just okay for me. Was looking for a spam masubi type onigiri. Love the sweet and salty sauce that comes with it. The spicy tuna was excellent. Plenty of filling and had enough spice.

Chassity K.

Yelp
Always consistent- amazing food and friendly staff. Spicy tuna onigiri and pork onigiri is my go-to
google avatar

Ileana P.

Yelp
I had a very different experience than the rest of these reviews describe. The boba was hard and difficult to swallow, the rice was also hard and seemingly inedible, and the overall quality of ingredients seemed lackluster; the store was also messy and disorganized during my visit. I asked to speak to the manager or the owner but none of the staff had seen her or were able to get in contact with her. It was a large waste of money. I caution anyone who goes here and encourage you to take your money somewhere else, there are many other stores in the nearby area that offer a better experience. It's also disappointing that this is not a sit-down spot, I would recommend going somewhere else
google avatar

Clare C.

Yelp
ONIGIRIS WERE SO WARM AND DELISH AND FRESH. Perfect little triangles I ate literally 5, they have a great selection of fillings
google avatar

Connie H.

Yelp
I've lived in this area for awhile and I can't even remember what was here before Juju came around. Loves: + Onigiri rice balls x3 + All the Asian snacks I loved as a kid like yan yan & hello panda cookies are sold here! + Nice staff + Quick service Not so love: - I mean, it's a deli. Not a popular sit-down kind of spot. There are tons of hot food items to boba being sold here that I could not try, but I suppose that calls for future visits! :)

Eugene K.

Yelp
We got shrimp tempura, spam and egg, and salmon Mayo onigiri. Salmon Mayo was the best. They all taste way better than it looks, and made fresh and warm! I'm normally not a big fan of rice balls because they're usually cold but these were all very tasty. We also got fresh shrimp chips and jasmine milk tea with lychee jelly. Both very very good.
google avatar

Jennifer D.

Yelp
Cute Japanese deli with a wide selection of Asian snacks, hot food, boba, and can/bottle drinks. The onigiri selection is interesting ranging from more to less Asian. I enjoyed the shrimp tempura onigiri - a perfect crunchy savory snack. The packaging is really cool too and preserves the crunchiness of the seaweed. The taro milk tea boba was unfortunately a let down. It's cool that you can add a topping for free but that day they were out of boba and the strawberry popping boba had an artificially sickly sweet taste. The taro milk tea itself was very watery and way too sweet (even though I got 30% sugar). The flavor was weak and was more like sugar water. Definitely looking forward to coming back for onigiri and Asian snacks though! Service was fast and friendly and the table seating is large for a deli!
google avatar

Yelp
Being in Cobble Hill these days can be a bit depressing when you see all the empty storefronts on Smith and Court. Businesses seem to be closing left and right, and all you see are For Lease signs (stupid greedy real estate people). When things do open, I question the choices of some of these businesses (does the neighborhood really need another mediocre Thai or Japanese place?). Fortunately Juju doesn't fall into the above categories - it satisfies a niche that no one else fills. They have onigiri that are made to order, and good ones at that. The price is very reasonable and make the perfect snack or meal depending on how hungry you are. In addition to onigiri, they have excellent flavored teas/tapioca (my preferred place as opposed to Hanco's across the street). They also have a lot of harder to find Asian snacks, like Pocky and green tea Kit Kats. If you don't want anything exotic, they have all your standard deli fare/sandwiches and drinks. Definitely check this place out - highly recommend it!
google avatar

Alex S.

Yelp
I've had the rice balls here more times than I can count. They are excellent. Some of the best I've had. Awesome ingredients and made to order. If you're looking for a cheap snack or a quick lunch in the area, this is a perfect pick. Also a great spot for snacks.
google avatar

Yelp
Walked by here a few times in the past and have always wanted to try it. This place is small, they offer a variety of Asian snacks and some Asian groceries like miso soup base, ramen, and tofu stew soup bases etc. Their menu offers Asian inspired snacks and meals such as rice balls, rice dishes, sushi burritos and Kimbap. I ordered a buttermilk fried chicken sandwich and a tuna poke sushi burrito. The chicken sandwich was served on sliced white bread and it was packed with fried onion rings and chicken cutlets. It was juicy and definitely filling. The sushi burrito was huge! The quality of the tuna was decent. The burrito was stuffed with veggies and full of flavor. Definitely big enough for two people to share and probably be full off of. The burrito was around $15 and sandwiches was a bit under $10 I believe. This place also serves bubble tea which I'm eager to try next time I'm around this neighborhood. Juju is the perfect place to grab a snack or meal from that's different from your average deli, I hope they stick around.

Koi G.

Yelp
Amazing food at good prices, Jujus offers a great menu for a wide range of ages to enjoy. The people working there are so lovely and approachable. The joint itself is cute with lots of snacks and plushies to look at while your food is being made
google avatar

Mena M.

Yelp
What a cute/random hole in the wall spot. Had the avocado Kani and white peach boba and both were fresh and absolutely delicious! Will be back!
google avatar

Crystal G.

Yelp
Just a yummy f'ing time. Went here because I was craving a warm, fresh rice ball and I was not disappointed. One of the best around. Also had the crab seasoned crisps, light and crispy, . Lastly I ordered a bubble tea not knowing it was milky and the woman at the counter made another without. The bubble tea was good, tapioca balls are not sweetened nor syrupy which I happen to appreciate since I don't like my tea sweet. They are nice and accommodating, will definitely return.
google avatar

Powell M.

Yelp
I have been hunting for the makings for miso soup for a month and they had everything I needed, the bonito base. They also have amazing food for take out. This place is a gem!
google avatar

Polly A.

Yelp
Love this place whenever I am in the neighborhood. Super friendly service, super fresh food. My favorite summer combo is watermelon slushing (real watermelon juice) + salmon mayo rice ball (see photo).

Latoya F.

Yelp
Cashier was very sweet & helpful. They were out of boba. But highly recommend the rice balls
google avatar

Sunde A.

Yelp
Honestly, I'm always up for bubble tea and a rice ball, and Juju always satisfies! The staff is always friendly and the atmosphere is really nice! A little busy, but rightfully so! The rice balls are made right in front of you and so is the bubble tea; super cool to see. Juju is a great place to go with friends!
google avatar

Syl S.

Yelp
It's like an Asian bodega, part deli, part groceries. Really good rice balls!!They make them to order so they're super fresh and warm! The workers are so friendly also. Good selection of snacks too. I bought a package of shirataki ramen. I haven't seen these around anywhere. A great addition to the area. Happy to support quality, local small businesses!
google avatar

Anne L.

Yelp
Quick and friendly! I've loved everything I ordered there. I must have tried all their rice balls. It is often full of kids hanging out after school, so I order on the phone for pick up to avoid waiting. I do hope they are here to stay! One suggestion would be to have more ramen options, perhaps the kind that cannot be found in regular grocery stores.
google avatar

Gayle G.

Yelp
So happy this placed opened up! The rice balls are delicious. Kani+Avo is a must buy. I'm so excited that one can get stuff over rice and bubble tea AND deli stuff all in the same place. Came in on a Monday afternoon and seems its a hangout spot for nannies and moms. To my mind, it's got a bit of a bodega feel. Fun selection of Japanese snacks and drinks. Only downside is the strong fried smell inside. They need better ventilation to circulate air from all the food they're making.

John K.

Yelp
The salmon rice balls aka onigiri at this place are INCREDIBLE. The shrimp rice balls aka onigiri are also really good. I don't normally like onigiri much. These are my single favorite food discovery in NYC over the past year. I've probably been ten times and they are consistently incredible. Try them with the chili oil. The reason I'm writing this review is, this place doesn't show up on Yelp if you search for onigiri, which is mindblowing, because the onigiri are amazing, even if they call them rice balls because they don't think anyone knows what onigiri are, or maybe they don't think their rice balls qualify as onigiri... but I've had a lot of onigiri, mostly in Japan, and these are the best onigiri I've ever had (I've tried most of the other rice ball types they have and didn't love any of them, although they're pretty good for onigiri)
google avatar

Gabriel S.

Yelp
When I got there the lady working there was so nice I forgot a mask so she offered me one they have the best candy there and it smells like heaven in there
google avatar

Kamiu L.

Yelp
I love this place! Big fan of their rice balls and their Kimbap. Interesting breakfast sandwiches as well, and you can stock up on Asian snacks and frozen items (dumplings etc). Such a great addition to the neighborhood!
google avatar

Yun Chun C.

Yelp
My go-to spot highly recommend the rice balls and now I don't have to travel to get all my authentic Asian snacks
google avatar

Courtney C.

Yelp
It's one of your favorite places to go on the weekends for a quick snack or lunch. There are TONS of rice ball flavors - some traditional and some unexpected - all of which are so yummy! The team there is super friendly and the deli is stocked with fun snacks. We move having this spot in the neighborhood!
google avatar

Shay S.

Yelp
Their onigiri was so good and fresh and warm! I got the shrimp tempura one and I can't wait to come back and try more. They're also super nice.
google avatar

Andrew J.

Yelp
Fresh-made onigiri, a bunch of Japanese snacks, and BOSS coffee! I love eating here. Try the spam & egg onigiri; it doesn't sound like much, but yum!
google avatar

Jahneva C.

Yelp
Love the food here and the service is nice. Just one time I placed an order over the phone and they forgot my drink

Jenn Y.

Yelp
Nice little place. They sell regular boars head sandwiches but I mainly come here for the awesome onigiri rice balls and bubble teas, they are so so good. I bike from home just to come here sometimes !
google avatar

Amanda F.

Yelp
My wife, kid, and I are O B S E S S E D with this place. They have a big assortment of imported Asian snacks and drinks, as well as the BEST fresh onigiri (aka rice balls) made with both traditional and new ingredients. They also sell fresh American food such as BECs, coffees, etc. The family that owns it is incredibly sweet, to boot! Happy to spend our money locally for delicious, fresh made food and drinks. You may wait a few minutes for your food, but that's because it's FRESH, which means it tastes better!

Aaron M.

Yelp
I stumbled upon this place when they first opened, and now it's my go to spot with my friends. They have such a wide variety of snacks, not to mention a killer food menu. There's literally something for everyone, no matter your palate. The staff is absolutely incredible and so friendly - I cant say how nice it is to feel appreciated as a regular, and they greet newcomers happily every time. I literally couldn't recommend this place any more, it's like a second home hidden away in a deli.
google avatar

aimee m.

Yelp
The most obscenely awesome fried chicken sandwich and spiced fries ever. Why are you just sitting there reading my review? You must run there now, dear Brooklyn and all the surrounding boroughs and go there (and get some) NOW! Also looking to try their ramen and fantasy eggrolls (an assortment of non traditional ones). Make this the busiest little shop in Boerum Hill! Comes with salty but sweet customer service as well!
google avatar

Amaru H.

Yelp
This has become one of my favorite Cafes/Delis in Cobble Hill. The experience is pleasant from the moment you walk right in. The store is clean, the staff is friendly, Good vibes, and the food is great! I was shocked when I realized they have all my favorite japanese snacks and teas! I definitely recommend their onigiri and smoothies! I've also met the owner several times and she is beyond sweet. She is always willing to help , her energy over all is so pleasant! 10/10 I recommend.

Ines P.

Yelp
Literally the best! Love all of the rice balls- they're made to order and always fresh. Service is always friendly!
