NYC’s New Restaurant Openings

"Near Union Square, Kappo Sono offers a $350 kaiseki meal for just 12 guests every night. From a celebrated Japanese chef from Hokkaido, who earlier ran a version of this restaurant on the Lower East Side, Kappo Sono has a constantly shifting seasonal menu with 14 courses—including things like miso-marinated seared wagyu tongue, and cured yellowtail prosciutto. The restaurant is slated to run in this location through March of next year." - will hartman

I’m so glad Chef Chikara reopened Kappo Sono. It was impossible to get a reservation at his old location so I never got to try it. It is much easier now in this bigger spot. So much thought, effort me precision is put into every one of these dishes. There were 10 savory courses and 3 dessert courses. We were so full and had to take the last 2 dessert courses home. Everything was delicious but the mackerel was way too fishy for me and the wagyu was a bit too fatty. Other than that a perfect meal. They also include a tin of cookies and a mayo for all the guests to take home.

🍣 An unforgettable night at @kapposono! 🍶✨ If you’re craving an elevated kaiseki journey, this spot is unbeatable. With 15 exquisite courses crafted by Chef @sono_chikara_kapposono and 3 stunning desserts by @norie_uematsu, every bite felt like a piece of art. The nearly 3-hour dining experience was nothing short of luxurious perfection. At 💰350 per person, it’s definitely a splurge, but worth every penny. Plus, they send you home with tea and pastries for the next morning—because why should the indulgence stop at dinner? 😉 👀 Only 12 seats per night, so book early for your next special occasion. Trust me, you don’t want to miss this!

Beautiful cuisine and friendly, super- professional service. Their seating may seem to start on the early side, but that's partly to appreciate the beautiful location, and also to give you time to find them and get situated for the main event. (It's a speakeasy setup where someone invites you in from a nondescript entrance.)

It’s been the 8th? 9th? time dining with Chef Sono-San and his team and truly starts to feel like home. From the delicately curated space to the well assorted menu, from the mind blowing desserts to the warm sobacha that accompanies you home on a cold winter day. I just love learning this form of cuisine called Kappo from Sono-San - a cuisine that sets you on a journey of seasons, immersed in the wonderful tastes nature has to offer.
