Kenji. The man, the myth, the legend.
When his previous restaurant, Necco, shut down, I was lowered into an abyss of sadness that only a food lover robbed of their favorite eatery could experience. A loss. Gone too soon. I was shocked. I was confused. And most importantly, I didn't know where to eat lunch. Would I ever be the same?
Years later, when murmurs crept through the ether, whispering that Kenji was close to opening a new church of Japanese cuisine, I had to know more. Was this THEE Kenji? The one and only? The man whose culinary ingenuity and cunningly simple edible flair dragged me into his restaurant numerous times per week, for years? Could Los Angeles be THAT lucky, to have him bless our palates once more?
I just couldn't believe it. I messaged him via IG, begging for answers..
Me: "Is it TRUE??"
Him: "Justin, I told you I was opening a new place. I've told you a few times now, actually. I thought it was pretty clear."
Me: "REALLY though??? No way."
Him: "It's all over my social. It's public info. Please, stop asking me every few weeks. It's getting weird."
I deciphered his cryptic riddles and finally felt a smidge of confidence. This was the best news, blessed news. Like clouds parting from an endless storm, with hints of a brighter future creeping across the realm.
Walking into Kenbey Sushi for the first time was like stepping through a portal into the past. A past, but born anew. The same vibe, the same scents, the same faces. But with a new take, a new energy, and a new menu. This spot may be a much farther drive for me, but I don't care. I would follow chef Kenji to the ends of Los Angeles county for a taste of his skill. I just looked it up and LA county is massive, 4753 square miles. Did you guys know that? Jesus, that's a big as fuck. But I stand by my statement. Kenji brings the magic, and he's backed up by a staff that hold his standards, his methods, and his clean-eating Japanese ideals in the highest regard. Because of this, if you dine in the hallowed halls of Kenji, you will experience a sublime excellence that is difficult to uncover in this life.
I guess I could have just said, "Kenji is a great chef and I'm glad he's back. His food is really good. I'll come again," but that would be far too straightforward and helpful. And I'm more of an unhelpful rambler. Sorry about that. Go to Kenbey Sushi. It's no joke.
