The Best Restaurants in Silver Lake

"Kenbey is a small Silver Lake sushi restaurant from chef Kenji Koyama who previously headed up Necco in West LA. Both omakase and by-the-roll ordering are available, along with an extensive sake menu. The fish quality shines through in the sashimi prepared with blue fin toro, Japanese mackerel, and more. Though sushi is the specialty here, vegan options are up to par with the rest of it. Kenbey is also open during the day, making for an outstanding lunch option in the area." - Rebecca Roland

The Best Sushi Restaurants in Los Angeles, According to Eater Editors

"Chef Kenji Koyama, previously of West LA’s Necco, prepares sushi, sashimi, hand rolls, and more out of this understated Silver Lake restaurant. The breadth of fresh seafood is the star here, often including barracuda, Japanese mackerel, eel, and scallop. To take a guided trip through the menu, opt for the omakase which is available with a wagyu add-on, or choose your own adventure with a la carte orders. Kenbey also offers a comprehensive sake menu encompassing popular varietals like junmai and nigori to pair with the sushi. Lunch is a more casual affair, while the dinner crowd tends to be more buttoned-up. The price for dinner omakase ranges from $180 to $230. — Rebecca Roland, associate editor" - Matthew Kang

Kenbey Sushi - Review - Silver Lake - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Kenbey is officially our favorite sushi restaurant in Silver Lake. Not that there’s much competition (sorry Gelson’s), but it’s not just the location—Kenbey would shine in any neighborhood. It’s the perfect balance of fancy, high-end sushi (think gorgeous omakases filled with silky toro and seared Wagyu beef) and the fun, casual dishes you always want to order, but get worried you’ll look like a novice. Green shishito peppers are roasted within an inch of their life, yellowtail sashimi comes jalapeno-flavored, and puffy rice squares are loaded with fresh tuna. Tables and bar seats are filled with couples on dates and rowdy groups drinking sake, where friends and their significant others sit on opposite sides as if they’re about to play dodgeball. It’s a fun time and you’ll eat impeccably made sushi—the kind of place the Eastside desperately needs." - Kat Hong

A West LA Sushi Star Chef Opens a New Spot in the Heart of Silver Lake - Eater LA

"The former Ramen Bangaichi at 4339 Sunset Boulevard in Silver Lake is now Kenbey, a Japanese sushi restaurant from chef Kenji Koyama. The surprise opening is just a few days old, but there are already big ramifications for the neighborhood’s growing sushi scene, considering Sunset Sushi is across the street and Kombu Sushi is just down the street, as is Osen Izakaya — and that’s to say nothing of Michelin-rated Morihiro over in Atwater. Fans will know chef Koyama’s work from Necco, his longtime health-conscious West LA Japanese restaurant beloved by many, including (according to the New York Times) the singer Lorde. Expect a rotating menu that includes vegan-friendly options." - Farley Elliott

Google
We really enjoyed our dining experience at Kenbey. The sushi is fresh and you can tell the chef cares about each piece he serves. I’m giving it 4 stars instead of 5 because of 3 things. The first is that I didn’t like the sauce that came on the hirame and the sauce on the albacore with the slice of garlic. Second, we tried the Hokkaido uni, it was a very dark orange (so not the freshest - we should have gone with the Santa Barbara uni) and so bland and flavorless. Third, for the prices they could add some decoration. I would still recommend trying Kenbey. The service was excellent and overall pretty good!

Absolutely delicious sushi as well as many other items on the menu. The staff is so friendly and the service couldn’t have been better! Kenbey is a great choice for a special night out.

Incredible. Been living in Los Feliz/Silverlake my whole life and now they have a new best sushi spot.

My family and I were profiled, disrespected, and intimidated by the person in this photo. We came here wanting to try the place out. As we parked, an employee stood there staring at us. He then began shaking his head repeatedly while smirking. I greeted him politely and asked, “Is everything okay?” He responded aggressively: “NO, YOU CANNOT PARK THERE.” I asked if the spot was reserved, and he snapped, “IT’S ONLY FOR CUSTOMERS. YOU CANNOT PARK HERE.” I replied, “Yes, we came here to eat.” He said, “Oh, okay. Because people try to park here and go.” That’s how my entire family was treated—before we even stepped inside. We did nothing but park and get out of the vehicle, only to be met with hostility and suspicion. We couldn’t then eat where we were made to feel unwelcome from the start. Maybe it was just a transgression by one employee—but when that transgression involves profiling and disrespect, it raises concerns about the environment the business allows or fosters. The experience made us question whether this establishment has a pattern of discrimination. We ended up eating at the pizza restaurant next door, by the way.

An authentic lovely Japanese omakase place in the Silver lake area. The staff are so incredibly friendly and kind. The food is fresh, well prepared and delicious. I prefer the sushi bar seating.

Had the absolute pleasure of enjoying the omakase at Kenbey Sushi. Each item had a stunning and very thoughtful presentation, the flavors and textures were delightful and interesting. The staff was kind and attentive. I do recommend making a reservation as it’s an intimate restaurant. Can’t wait to enjoy a meal here again!

Google
Don’t follow the reserve link just call them, leave a voice mail and you would probably get a table that same night!! We were there on a Saturday night and it was completely empty except for 2 other tables. I suspect people are seeing the resy options not available for the weekend and thinking they are booked out! Everything we ate was so fresh and delicious and Kenji has the best Santa Barbara uni hands down. The server also recommended a bottle of sale and it was so good follow her recommendations. Definitely comjng back here again

Google
An amazing opportunity to have chef Kenji's almost undivided attention for omakase! I came on a Friday night at 8 PM and was the only party at the sushi bar. I opted for the $100 omakase and added Hokkaido scallop and Santa Barbara uni at the end. Kenji is very friendly and provided great commentary to help me appreciate what I was eating. Looking forward to coming again!

Yelp
Really enjoyed my dining experience here. In LA, it's not hard to find sushi shops but a lot of them I would consider places that sell high margin rolls rather than an authentic sushi restaurant that focuses on high quality fish. Kenbey is the latter and is a gem in an otherwise non-descript strip mall. Reservations are highly recommended since the restaurant is relatively small. The service throughout the evening was wonderful and just the right amount of attentiveness. The highlight of course is the fish. We ordered the Monthly Special omakase which was not on their website and quite cheaper compared to the regular omakase. The meal included an appetizer, miso soup, 10 pieces of nigiri, choice of handroll/cut roll, and mochi ice cream. The nigiri set highlights include salmon, yellowtail, red snapper, meguro tuna, and chu-toro tuna. Quality of the fish was top notch. Price-wise, because it is high quality fish, you pay for what you get but I still think it's good value considering the quality. I am planning to come back and would recommend this restaurant to any sushi enthusiasts.

Yelp
I'll keep it short but sweet. The sushi is amazing and the service is great. It's pricey but worth it.

Yelp
If you want a great sushi experience Kenbey is your place to go on this side of town. Chefs provided a great selection of nigiri already dressed no soy sauce needed. Aside from their offered set, I could not forget to have a Toro-Taku Handroll (Tuna & Pickled Radish) and an order of Spicy Tuna Rice Cakes.Another standout dish was some sea bass with an topping I was not sure of, not yuzu kosho, maybe a mustard. Enjoy the warm atmosphere and chill music. Friendly Chefs & servers ready to please.

Yelp
Kenbey is exceptional. I have known Kenji & Kono for some years and i can safely say they operate at an exceptional level. Kenbey is simple in its layout and design as you would imagine, Japanese elegance. The real treat of course is in the food. I recommend Omakase, though everything is incredible. Very high standard and very reasonable prices. If you do go, please give my best to them both from Antony

Yelp
Kenji. The man, the myth, the legend. When his previous restaurant, Necco, shut down, I was lowered into an abyss of sadness that only a food lover robbed of their favorite eatery could experience. A loss. Gone too soon. I was shocked. I was confused. And most importantly, I didn't know where to eat lunch. Would I ever be the same? Years later, when murmurs crept through the ether, whispering that Kenji was close to opening a new church of Japanese cuisine, I had to know more. Was this THEE Kenji? The one and only? The man whose culinary ingenuity and cunningly simple edible flair dragged me into his restaurant numerous times per week, for years? Could Los Angeles be THAT lucky, to have him bless our palates once more? I just couldn't believe it. I messaged him via IG, begging for answers.. Me: "Is it TRUE??" Him: "Justin, I told you I was opening a new place. I've told you a few times now, actually. I thought it was pretty clear." Me: "REALLY though??? No way." Him: "It's all over my social. It's public info. Please, stop asking me every few weeks. It's getting weird." I deciphered his cryptic riddles and finally felt a smidge of confidence. This was the best news, blessed news. Like clouds parting from an endless storm, with hints of a brighter future creeping across the realm. Walking into Kenbey Sushi for the first time was like stepping through a portal into the past. A past, but born anew. The same vibe, the same scents, the same faces. But with a new take, a new energy, and a new menu. This spot may be a much farther drive for me, but I don't care. I would follow chef Kenji to the ends of Los Angeles county for a taste of his skill. I just looked it up and LA county is massive, 4753 square miles. Did you guys know that? Jesus, that's a big as fuck. But I stand by my statement. Kenji brings the magic, and he's backed up by a staff that hold his standards, his methods, and his clean-eating Japanese ideals in the highest regard. Because of this, if you dine in the hallowed halls of Kenji, you will experience a sublime excellence that is difficult to uncover in this life. I guess I could have just said, "Kenji is a great chef and I'm glad he's back. His food is really good. I'll come again," but that would be far too straightforward and helpful. And I'm more of an unhelpful rambler. Sorry about that. Go to Kenbey Sushi. It's no joke.

Yelp
Small place, simple and unassuming looking, hard to see it if you're not familiar with the area but the service is good and the food is super fresh and delicious. Each sushi topping was very fresh and the temperature of the sushi rice was perfect. We also tried the lamb and it was delicious. I usually not a fan of eating lamb but this place knows how to make it right, good aroma, nice flavor and so soft that it melts in your mouth. They also have a nice selection of Japanese Sake and Japanese beer. I'm surprise not many people seem to know about Sushi Kenbey because there are not many reviews in yelp. I guess someone must to have missed the memo in yelp because this place is better than many well known brands nearby out there, it's definitely a must try!
google avatar

Ed N.

Yelp
My expectations were high because of the reviews so when we ate our vein filled blue fin tuna it was already off to a poor start. It is not a hole in the wall but very generic so I figured more would go into the actual dishes like you would get in Japan. Nothing, not one dish stuck out in my mind which is sad. Wasn't good, wasn't bad, service not good nor bad. Almost $200 later we went next door to buy a pizza, seriously.

Yelp
Day/Time: Friday / 6:45 - 8:30pm Location: Sushi bar (Made reservations) Music: not really sure generally (the volume was low), but there was definitely some early Black Sabbath. Food: Omakase - Everything was awesome except the barracuda (it was a little chewy), but I think it's my personal preference. Drinks: A bottle of Tedorigawa Yamahai Daiginjo Ishikawa (was tasty to me, but I don't know much about nihonshuu). Service: Excellent. Timing was great. Water/drink glasses never left empty and didn't have to ask for anything to be refilled. Parking: ubered, but the place is in a minimall, so there's some parking (maybe a dozen or so spaces).
google avatar

Yelp
We made a reservation ahead of time as that's the only way you'll be able to reserve omakase seating at the bar. We came to celebrate a birthday with family and got the wagyu omakase for everyone. Overall dining experience was nice it was 3 hours long just as a note, so plan for a long meal. It is a smaller restaurant so not recommended for large large parties. Overall food was tasty and was cool to watch the chef prepare the meals in front of us. Only thing was that it was pretty long and look a while between entrees since it was only one chef doing all the meal prep for the entire restaurant. If you've never have omakase, I would recommend giving this place a try for that specifically. But make a reservation and plan to spend $$$. Staff - 10/10 super friendly and polite, the sushi chef also told us what each item they were serving Parking - it is located in a smaller plaza so you can park anywhere in there and it's free Bathroom - yes they have one Noise level - depends, cause it was quite when we arrived and some small groups, but as the meal prolonged it got loud because some parties were quite drunk and talking very loudly

Yelp
Relatively new to the Los Angeles sushi scene, Kenbey Sushi has been open for almost 6 months. I forgot how I heard about it, but I'm happy I did. This spot definitely leans towards the traditional side, so don't come here expecting extravagant "Americanized" sushi rolls. I doubt you'll find anything like it on the menu. That said, lovers of traditional nigiri should find this place very enjoyable. Our party of four arrived around 5:30pm to a relatively empty restaurant. The sushi bar was all reserved for later bookings, however, so we had to sit at one of their tables. We ordered mostly off the nigiri list. I sampled Red Snapper, Kohada (Gizzard Shad), Iwashi (Sardine), Bluefin Tuna, and a Tuna Cut Roll. Overall, I thought everything was great! I wouldn't say this is the best sushi bar in Los Angeles, but it's definitely worth checking out. Service was friendly, and prices were appropriate. With their Omakase priced at $150, I am very tempted to come back soon. I'm curious to see what else Kenbey has to offer!

Yelp
Kenbey is located in an unassuming strip mall. It might be a little difficult to see from a car zipping by on Sunset Blvd. The food is AMAZING, especially the omakase (chef's choice). Each creation is like a tiny artist gift. The attention to details from the staff is much appreciated. Be sure to make reservations online before going.

Yelp
They are a new sushi restaurant that is so worth paying attention to! You can order a la carte or go for the omakase (regular $115 and premium $150) Besides sushi they also have a great selection of sake to pair with the meal Some of the highlights- -sautéed veggies: love the soy balsamic sauce on it and especially the lotus roots -modori katsuo: the autumn bonito that is fattier and so delicious -Kegani: beautifully prepared hairy crab - the meat is so sweet and the crab innards were OUT OF THIS WORLD -toro maki: love the fatty otoro mixed with pickled veggies with warm rice and crispy nori! Chef Kenji san is so nice and friendly, we had so much fun chatting through the night! overall a great casual and versatile sushi spot

Alexandra W.

Yelp
Kenbey is by far the best sushi spot in this part of town. The omakase is delicious, fresh, creative and refined-- I'm always surprised when I'm able to get a last minute reservation. There's a really nice contrast between the food, which is pretty elevated, and the ambiance, which is totally unpretentious and friendly. The chef and servers are lovely people. Never had anything but a great experience here and always look forward to going back.

Yelp
It took 2 hours to bring sushi, at the end they overcharged us and they had a horrible service, the portions are too small and nothing unique.

Yelp
How many ways can one write excellence regarding Kenbey Sushi? I spend Xmas Eve and birthdays in this closest thing to heaven on earth. The fish is superb and their selection of sake makes me want to move in the place. Duality is good enough for business and dating purposes. This is treasure!

Yelp
- Locale Destination - It's on Sunset Blvd and Fountain Ave in E Hollywood. Ambiance: light, modern, simple. All staff were Japanese. Menu: lunch, omakase, a la carte - sushi. Service: attentive and friendly Parking: plenty - Gluttony Expedition - Fish varieties: Awesome! Great varieties that you don't see often. The best thing about this place! Fish quality: hit and miss. Higher than average, toro was wow. Engawa, nodokuro, negitoro, uni were good. The rest were so so. Sushi rice: I'll stick to sashimi and appetizers next time I come here. The rice was too hard, too vinegary, slightly too warm, hard to hold. It wasn't as bad as "Sugar fish", but not so good. Seasoning: all of them were seasoned, so I didn't need to use soy sauce. However, everything was too much - too much salt, too much seasoning. They could have let the fish alone w/o too much seasonings. - Conqueror's Deduction - Pictures looked really good, definitely better one in the area, omakase with a few extra for $125 wasn't bad. I love the wide fish varieties, some high notes, yet I'm not a fan of rice here. Good sushi, for sure, but it's more like 3.5 stars for me. I'll come back for sashimi and appetizers, not for sushi.

Yelp
Fresh fish, good cuts. lotus root croquet was Deelish. Service was attentive and helpful. A little pricey but worth it. A great quiet, chill space in Silver Lake with parking!

Yelp
New Japanese spot in silverlake ran by a sweet Japanese couple. There is a parking lot in the plaza, but it was pretty busy/full. We came around noon on a Thursday and was seated at the booth right away. Their $80 lunch omakase started off with a nice miso soup and a Japanese salad, followed by 9 different nigiri, and ended with a handroll. From the other reviews, looks like some people got an extra nigiri from their lunch, but no complaints- I was still very full after the meal. All the pieces were fresh and delicious, but I was slightly disappointed at the quality of their toro. I was also expecting either uni or scallop to be included(like other comparable omakase spots in LA) but it unfortunately wasn't part of the experience. However, it was still a great meal and left feeling happy. I hope to try their dinner omakase in the future!
google avatar

Yelp
Kenbey sushi is in a small plaza with limited parking and some metered street parking. We came on a Thursday for lunch and seemed like we were the only customers. There were maybe 8 tables that could sit 2-4 people, and a L shaped bar that could sit 12 people, shoulder to shoulder. We were provided with 2 page menu, one with drinks and one with lunch. they do have bento section, $30 sushi and sashimi (unsure if it was $25 or $35) then lunch omakase for $80. Theres no description of what omakase entails, which coulddd be part of the mystery itself, but we decided to check it out. It started w a salad with ginger dressing (typical japanese flavor, yum) and miso. My sister thought it was too salty, but I quite liked it w its deep umami flavor. Next came the sushi.. most were good, but I do have to say that there were simply no wow factors. Seemed like some people had 10 sushi pieces with one last hand roll, but today we were given 9 sushi plus handroll. There was a med. toro but no uni/scallop/sweet shrimp like other omakase places. No wasabi, and no refills on ginger ;P barely had to use the soy sauce though since sushi pieces were all well seasoned. Since we got 9 pieces + hand roll for $80, each piece roughly equates to $7-8, but Im not sure if I will be down to pay this again next time. We were somewhat surprised that no desserts/tamago/tea were included in omakase, but maybe this place just operates a bit differently! Ultimately, good food, but maybe next time they could offer something that is unique to this restaurant that would leave customers wanting to return:)

Yelp
Any day you walk into Kenbey is a good day. I have to get to 85 characters for this to be a review, so these words are just fillers.

Yelp
Sashimi lunch. See picture. Miso soup was delicious. Salad and it's dressing were really tasty. And fresh sashimi. Did I say fresh? Fresh! The only want I had was for about 50% more rice. When the fish is fresh, you want hot fresh rice.

Yelp
A new(ish) omakase spot in Silverlake. Head down the street and you'll find another community favorite: Izakaya Osen. While Kenbey's presentation/price point vary greatly from Osen, it is important to note as Osen is one of my favorite sushi spots in LA due to it's reasonable pricing and excellent quality. On a Sunday night around 6:30pm, the room was only filled with one other party of 6 who were seated at one of the tables. Kenbey can probably hold like 8-10 at the bar and another 16-20 at tables? We chose bar seating since we were opting for the Omakase experience and those are always better at a bar! After some quick discussion with Kenji himself, we opted for the Premium Omakase since he mentioned both the appetizers (5 vs 2) and sushi pieces (10) are totally different. Appetizers 1) Jellyfish dressed in sweet vinegar and sesame oil - Different than the jellyfish I am used to in Chinese dishes. The bite felt a lil meatier and the cucumber slices with the dressing was such a refreshing way to open the meal! - 4/5 2) Seared Albacore w/ Yuzu Ponzu - The slices of fish were so good and the sear was perfect. The accompanying garden salad the fish laid on was equally great. 4.5/5 3) Clam w/ Shishito Peppers + Lotus Root + Shiitake Mushrooms - The clam was good, but nothing memorable. The shishitos were a bit spicy but tasted great. The lotus root was forgettable. I forgot what the shiitake was marinated in but it was the best of the four items. 4/5 4) Shirako aka Male Cod Roe Agedashi - I've rarely had agedashi without the tofu and this Shirako was an excellent substitute. 4.5/5 5) Roasted Duck w/ Apple Balsamic and Miso Marinade and side of Tartar sauce - WOW this duck was good! SO tender and the sauces complimented it well. My only wish were that it was seared to some extent to add a lil more texture. 5/5 6) Tempura Shiso Leaf w/ Red Snapper + Shiitake + Scallop filling - Hard to go wrong with tempura in general, but this was a great mix-up of the typical tempura dishes one would have. The filling of fish + shellfish + mushroom was amazing. 5/5 Not sure why we got six instead of five but I'll take it haha. The appetizers were definitely the star of the meal. That isn't to say the sushi that followed was bad, but there were many pieces, if any, that were particularly memorable imo. I would say the sushi portion is your standard fare white fish + fatty tuna + wagyu + uni type of line-up. We were a little disappointed there was no ocean trout or unagi/anago either. Nigiri 1) Chutoro - Great as one would expect of quality med fatty tuna 2) Fresh Octopus - never had octopus like this it was a neat try. I think I prefer traditional Ika (squid) over it. 3.5/5 3) Sayori - 4.5/5 4) Forgot oops 5) Aji - 4/5 6) Pan Shell Scallop - Tougher and not as sweet as a regular scallop. Definitely prefer the traditional version to this one. 3.5/5 7) Sea Perch - Nice and tender but not mind blowing. 4/5 8) Uni (Santa Barbara) - A lil conflicted as I vastly prefer Hokkaido Uni, but there was quite the amount layered upon our pieces ( 2-3 tongues) so not a cost saving measure. 4.25/5 9) Otoro - Great as one would expect of fatty tuna, though this piece was not overly fatty. Some might find this a con, but I think those real fatty slices are too rich and can overpower the tuna flavor of the piece. 10) Miyazakigyu - Lightly seared A5 Wagyu from the Miyazaki prefecture. Like the tunas, hard to go wrong with these type of pieces as the fish does most of the job. Toro Handroll - a fairly large handroll with rice, toro, and bits of pickled radish. The radish is mostly a texture addition but also helps cut through the fish flavor throughout the bite. 4.5/5 Rating this restaurant is a lil difficult for me. While I don't think there was anything particularly wrong with the meal, appetizers aside I don't think any of the sushi components really wow'd me. At $150 this menu is competing with other fairly known michelin (or ex michelin) establishments. While I don't believe Kenbey is striving for that, it also strays from the cozy casual vibe one could find down the street at Izakaya Osen where a premium 12pc omakase will only be 60% of the cost here and 90% of the experience (sans talking to a chef face to face if you care about that). Furthermore, I felt that for this price level I would've liked to see a miso soup/chawanmushi dish maybe at the halfway point? And the lack of unagi/anego and tamago definitely felt a lil weird. Many omakases I've been to at this price range usually include a treat/dessert too. My gut feeling is that Kenbey is "good" but the appetizers were so great that I couldn't possibly drop a 3-star here. I would sum up this meal as a "great experience but would probably not return". Again, not because anything is bad but if I want cozy sushi I would save my money and go to Osen or Gen. If I want the omakase experience, I would find a spot that focuses more on that.

Yelp
Kenbey Sushi is in our direct neighborhood, 5 minutes from our house, which is very exciting. I had to laugh about the other reviews that I read however. The sushi place is in a "strip mall" but does not have minimal parking. There is a lot and there is also street parking. It is in Silverlake, so that does mean it can be limited at times, but not worrisome. To add, most excellent sushi places in Los Angeles are in a strip mall. The reason I give Kenbey Sushi four stars is because it is excellent neighborhood sushi but it's not five-star sushi. The pricing however does reflect maybe a Michelin star restaurant. I found it to be very pricey; two diners and our bill was $327 before tax. This did include sake and wine. We ordered a la carte and opted out of the omakase because of some of the reviews I read. Also, the omakase is $150 a person. It has gone up in price since they have opened. We dined on a Friday. The restaurant was quite packed. I had been here several times before as the business has exchanged hands and gone from ramen to ramen to sushi, etc. So a tight fit is to be expected like most sushi places. We had a reservation, so no issues with sitting at the sushi bar. We sat down almost immediately. One thing that can't be argued is the quality of the fish. We mostly ordered sushi with a few appetizers. Appetizers to definitely try: yellowtail sashimi with jalapeño and halibut carpaccio. Both of these were very fresh and had great flavor. Two of the more odd appetizers were the Japanese yam and seaweed salad. As far as sushi/sashimi, we ordered the scallops, salmon, Japanese mackerel, toro, and blue fin. All of them were very good but the toro was very very fatty, almost inedible. Then for an entree we ordered the cooked salmon. It had very good flavor and the quality of the salmon was very good also. This seemed like a lot of food but it wasn't. We ended up ordering another round of salmon sashimi and tuna. For dessert, we had the mochi. Overall, the food was good but it was quite expensive. The service was a tad slow but they were crowded. I would definitely try again but maybe for lunch and less rounds of sushi.

Yelp
We were in the area and had some time to spare for lunch so we decided to pop in, came with zero expectations. We decided to go for the lunch time Omakase which was $80 and honestly was very underwhelmed. The nigiri all came at once so it didn't really feel like an omakase vs just ordering a sushi combo, felt like it really wasn't worth the money. Although they did tell us which fish were on the plate, there was no indication which order we should eat them. The fish itself was fine, fresh and the sauces were on too. Like someone else said, nothing here has a wow factor, it's just decent sushi which you'd hope for at the least with this price. I won't be coming back, but I don't think it's bad. Just not worth it.

Yelp
actual best sushi in LA. it's insane. can't recommend enough. blows every other east side sushi out of the water. kenji & co are the best.

Yelp
Right next to Garage Pizza, this tiny sushiya is blessing this neighborhood with the best omakase in town. The omakase here is for the: adventurous, appreciative, folks bored with the regular rolls at typical SoCal sushi joints, and discerning foodies. The pics are the receipts. Every. single. dish. was somewhere on the scale of amazing to mind-blowing. Make reservations and go now before this place blows up.

Yelp
Huge fan. Just walked out from an experience. Uni as good as I've ever had, I learned about a new fish (that I ate) from Kenji the chef. I have since forgotten the name but it was delicious. Bootfish? Belt fish!! Yum. They have a waygu seared sushi thing that everyone does but they did it better. Salmon toro, Chu toro, uni again, another wagyu. Sake (duh), snapper, blue fin tuna. Left it all at the table. I learned about tuna collar. Which is better than otoro. How have I not known this. I've been eating sushi for 35 years. Really impressive stuff. Set apart in a land of sushi restaurants. And a first for Silverlake! Our sushi is garbage, now saved. No they didn't pay me to write this. It's expensive so come for the moment. But it is really really....really good.

Yelp
Had our anniversary dinner here and each dish was better than the next. Sitting at the counter with the friendly chef was a wonderful experience, he's clearly very passionate about his restaurant. The staff were so friendly and attentive. The sushi is very high quality, every dish was truly delicious, and yet the atmosphere is casual and not pretentious. Can't recommend highly enough.

Yelp
Finally we have EXQUISITE sushi in Los Feliz/Silver Lake! And not even that...but Kenbey is one of the best sushi restaurants in all of LA!!! It rivals all the top Valley spots, Sushi Park, Matsuhisa, Matsumoto, Go's Mart, Sushi Spot, Sushi Zo, you name it! There's flawlessly fresh golden eye snapper, red snapper, melt-in-your-mouth scallops, salmon belly, halibut, halibut fin, ocean trout, plus unique fish you can't find anywhere else. It's also owned and operated daily/nightly by the sushi chef Kenji-san. Support this incredible local business - you won't be sorry!

Yelp
This place seems new in the area and a good local joint. The inside is pretty small with sushi bar seating, and two tables that fit for people with the rest fit into people. It is a New Plaza, so there is free parking as well as Street metered parking. The prices were a little high for the quality of the sushi, but I thought that the service was good and it was easy to do a walk in on a Friday night at 8 PM.

Yelp
We didn't have the best experience. The food quality was okay. I've had better for the same/less price. The staff talked bad about other customers the entire time. Including us. Name calling and judging in Japanese out loud. Ruined our experience. Go somewhere else.

Yelp
Worth. Every. Penny. Trust me (not Nozawa); you should roll yourself into Kenbey and luxuriate in the best sushi, service and music you could shake a chopstick at. We come here on special occasions to sample the most beautiful cuts of fish and witness the magic of the incredible Kenji - an icon of L.A. sushi., but hey, smoke'em if you got'em and make this your weekly joint. The toro is buttery and exquisite, and his whitefish concoctions with yuzu accoutrements will rock you almost as hard as Kenji's playlist. Ask for the secret wasabi! Parking = easy (lot in front) Service= 10/10 Food= insanely excellent Vibe= intimate and special

Yelp
The omakase is so worth it. Not one of those $$$$$ omakase, but still very tasty and delicious food. Sushi quality is nice, don't expect fancy "shari" and some of the tricks that super high end places try out. Still very worth it for the price and you'll leave nice and satisfied.

Yelp
It was delicious. The presentation and taste of the food is quality. Their standard sushi items are good too.

Yelp
Friendly service and delicious food. Decor isn't exciting but it's clean and minimal. The only thing that I found odd is that the whole sushi bar is reserved for omakase. The actual sushi bar was empty except for 2 couples. I doubt this is a sustainable business model which is a shame because the food is excellent

Yelp
Best sushi in Silver Lake, hands down. Good value for super high end Omakase in a chill, cozy environment. Chef Kenji is an amazing chef and a fun guy to spend a meal with.

Yelp
We found this little place when passing through the neighborhood yesterday and stopped her for lunch. Great sushi and attentive service.

Yelp
This is one of the best sushi restaurants I've ever eaten at. Truly exquisite and delightful located in a non-descript strip center off of sunset.

Yelp
Went here on a Tuesday afternoon around 6p.m. There was no one else dining in the establishment. I was immediately hit with a strong foul odor. Along with the smell, the service was not welcoming. Being the only ones eating there, we were stared at and it made the experience very uncomfortable. It was a situation where it was clearly evident we were being watched while dining, and gossiped about by our servers. The sushi? Very tasty! But not worth dining somewhere that literally stinks (sometimes it's ok to not sit and dine somewhere just cause you feel bad), and servers making it a very uncomfortable environment for you especially when you're the only diners there. Will not be returning! But WILL be reaching out the health department. There's so many sushi restaurants in LA, no need to drop by this one.

Yelp
Arguably the best in LA. Kenji is a master. The Omakase is great but I prefer to order a La carte. All the fish is fantastic, but please do not sleep on the lamb chop. Thank me later.

Yelp
Strolled in on a Wednesday, just figured I'd see if they'd take a walk in for omakase lunch, which was easy enough since I was their first customer of the day. Chef Kenji and his staff were very nice and the fish was very good.

Yelp
Wonderful addition to the neighborhood. Easily the best sushi in silverlake. Wonderful to have them on this side of Town. Stellar quality

Yelp
OMG. This is place is the greatest. So great I don't need to drive to Sushi Park again. Focus on the sashimi and nigiri, those are what make this place a must visit! (Oh and don't sleep on the shitake, shishito, lotus root appetizer. So good!)

Yelp
Authentic omakase experience, so delicious I forgot to take pictures. Had the lunch omakase and it was fresh, well prepared, and of great value. Super excited to have discovered this restaurant in Silver Lake.

Natalie C.

Yelp
Phenomenal sushi. The restaurant is no frills and absolutely authentic, but with unique items & details that you can only find at Kenbey like the toro handroll with Japanese pickled radish or Sea Perch sushi. Don't pass on the Chef's Omakase, it's recommended to enjoy with bar seating and a 10/10.

Yelp
This is truly a gem in silver lake. If you want fresh sushi directly from Japan, prepared by a sushi master, then this is the place to be. I'm still dreaming about the Omakase I had, especially the Toro, octopus, Aji and bonito. Every time I go, this place reminds me of sushi restaurants I went to while visiting Japan. I'll be returning soon for another Omakase soon. Thank you Kenji!

Rachel M.

Yelp
$20 for one cut roll of salmon sushi. That's insane! See pic of how tiny for reference. The fish is def high quality but apparently this restaurant is only for rich trust fund hipsters. Never again!

Yelp
best sushi on the east side, best selection, best music, fight me lunch is really affordable as well.
