"Open since 1976, Khan Toke says that it’s one of San Francisco’s first Thai restaurants. It’s also one of the city’s fanciest, as diners are required to remove their shoes before they’re led to low, hand-carved tables. The menu’s got over 100 items, so savvy diners ask the white-jacketed waiters “what’s good tonight?” to make sure they get the kitchen’s best and brightest." - Dianne de Guzman, Paolo Bicchieri

"This Thai spot is somewhere you go for a special occasion. You take your shoes off upon entry, and sit at a table with leg space recessed into the floor. The menu leans a little heavily on the American-Thai classics (satay, green curry, pad thai), but it’s a good time regardless." - Taylor Abrams

I stopped in on a Saturday afternoon for lunch. Very lovely place. Friendly atmosphere and staff. I had the yellow curry and Thai iced tea. They were delicious! The curry had just a bit of spice which made it nice. There was also a side of cucumbers with a sweet sauce that were good. Overall I would recommend you stop by! Kid friendly as well.

Google
They just don’t make em like this anymore. This place has been around for 50~ years, and is incredibly well decorated. There are wooden carvings everywhere, and you have to take your shoes off upon entering. It’s so nice that you want to preserve it though, so it’s okay. The food and service were top notch. Always had plenty of water. Would certainly recommend to anyone!

Loved eating here! The food was delicious, everybody in my group really enjoyed their meals. The pad see ew was one of my favorites. And the host/waiter was pleasant and offered many helpful suggestions that we really appreciated. The setting was very beautiful and atmospheric, as well. Thumbs up all around!

Google
Good food in a beautiful, ornate setting. The exterior doesn't look nearly as nice as the interior. There were art pieces everywhere. I noticed that there was black and yellow striped tape on the carpet, so I assume beyond that point, shoes have to be off. There's a small bench for taking your shoes off and you leave them in the alcove. I had the Crowing Chicken with some white rice for takeout, but it would've been a nice place to dine in. I was approached by a server a few seconds after I entered. After ordering my food, I was told to wait. The server came back and gave me my receipt and card and told me to wait at the seating area in front, so I did. I received my food a few minutes after and the server picked up the signed receipt. I noticed that other takeout customers didn't know where to go and just stood in the hallway. A waiting area sign would be a good idea for this restaurant. I could smell the food through the bag, which also held a plastic spork and colorful napkin. The rice was perfect, as expected. The Crowing Chicken dish consisted of chicken, onions, and aromatics. The chicken was tender and flavorful, but also sweet and spicy. It's not like Chinese sweet and spicy chicken though. The boiled onions tasted how you'd expect. Some of the onions were kind of dry, like they were the second to top layer and should've been discarded. Overall, I recommend checking this place out. They could make some improvements, so it's more like a 4.7 in my opinion, so I've rounded to 5 stars. It's a beautiful restaurant and the food is good.

Google
this place is such a hidden gem — some of the best thai i’ve ever had. they really don’t make restaurants like this anymore because the interior was gorgeous too.

Google
One of my favorite Thai restaurants to visit. I really enjoy the green curry and Tom Kah soup. The pad Thai is also really good. The atmosphere is very nice. You take off your shoes when entering and sit in a sunken table. The service is always great too! Highly recommend!

Google
Ate year almost a year ago and the atmosphere and service were great. Atmosphere: Traditional place, with shoes off. Place was spotless and homey. Service: friendly and fast. Food: ample menu and tasty. However, during Covid times I did order take out and the food was not as great. Too salty and felt not as good as previous times. Disclaimer: I often went to Bangkok when I was living abroad — 3/4 times. The dine in experience as well as the flavors brought fond memories. When I ordered takeout the food was drowning in soy sauce.

KICKED OUT FOR HAVING A SERVICE DOG. Within moments of walking in—before being offered menus or water—the only employee in the building angrily approached our table and yelled “NO PETS, YOU NEED TO LEAVE.” We calmly explained our friend’s disability required a service animal be with them at all times and tried to deescalate the situation. After pointing out the posted sign on their front door that explicitly stated service animals were welcome, he told us repeatedly we had to leave and walked away. He returned a few minutes later and raised his voice, rattling off reasons he wouldn’t serve us despite removing our shoes at the front door as requested and waiting quietly for service. We informed him it was illegal to refuse service to a person because of their disability, which he indecorously responded by exclaiming “It doesn’t matter, I’m by myself and have other customers. Sit here if you want, but I’m not serving you.” The vicissitude of his tone drove us to leave, but he accosted us for a third time on the way out in front of an entire room of customers. What a shame and disappointment after seeing the beautiful interior and authentic design of this restaurant, but there is no excuse for this infelicitous and discriminatory behavior.

Yelp
Amazing food, great vibes, excellent service. Highly recommend the massaman curry. We will definitely be coming back.

Yelp
This is my go-to Thai restaurant. I really like that they keep their food simple, they don't add unnecessary ingredients in their dishes. I always get the Tom Yum Soup with tofu, thai spicy 10/10. Depending on who is making my food, it's a hit or miss, but it always tastes good whether it's 10/10 spice or not. My husband likes to get their pad thai with prawns, however, be careful with this choice though, often times it comes out dry (some people like that). I ordered the Pad kee mao once and regretted it, the msg and sodium in it is unforgiveable. I couldn't take off my rings and I had a sodium headache that lasted for hours. Still giving this place 4 stars because I really like their soup and quite frankly that's what I order 99.9999% of the time. I would give it 5 if the soup was consistent with how much tofu they gave.

Jason F.

Yelp
I walked into the restaurant before looking at Yelp or any online reviews. The entrance is very unassuming, once you get into the restaurant it's very apparent a lot of time and money has gone into the design of the restaurant. Friend got Panang and he really enjoyed it. Said he would come back for it. I got Pad Siew and I was let down a bit Didn't think it was thaaaat great. Flavor was one dimensional. Next time I comeback i'll give the curries a shot

Yelp
exceeded all my expectations! The food was absolutely delicious--every bite was bursting with flavor, and you could tell they use high-quality, fresh ingredients. From the appetizers to the dessert, everything was perfectly prepared and beautifully presented. What truly set this place apart, though, was the customer service. The waitress went above and beyond to ensure we had a wonderful dining experience. She was attentive without being intrusive, friendly, and genuinely cared about making our visit memorable. If you're looking for a place that delivers both amazing food and exceptional service, this is it. I can't wait to come back! Highly recommend!

Yelp
Wow this was one of the best restaurant experiences I've had in a while! The ambiance here is amazing, with a huge shoes-off eating area and legit decorations throughout. The food was also delicious. We had the pumpkin curry and a spicy pork dish, both of which were incredible. The service was amazing, and I was shocked that we were one of two groups eating here for dinner. This place is definitely getting added to my list of favorite restaurants in SF!

Elle L.

Yelp
Amazing food & ambiance! Eating here was such a special experience. The food was absolutely delicious, the service was great, and it was so beautiful! Stepping inside here felt like leaving the city--the decorations and seating were so intricate and comfortable, and you'd never know when passing by it on Geary that you were about to enter into such a special place. Highly recommend for a date spot, nice family/friend dinner, or even something like a birthday celebration! I'm amazed this spot isn't more well-known--I'll definitely be back and will be telling friends about it. :)

Aernnie S.

Yelp
Thaifood here is delicious! Authentic taste and clean. The area is safe and easy to find. Definally 5 stars reviews friendly and great services!!

Josh S.

Yelp
Great food and an amazing dining experience. I haven't had a bad dish in the place but I am fond of the curries. The Pad See Ew is my favorite noodle dish. The only watch-out is if you ask for something very spicy it is very spicy. Medium spicy is the right level of spice for my palate.

Natalie R.

Yelp
Very beautiful interior. Artistic. Authentic. Excellent service. We look forward to returning. 3 of us attended and had dinner and appetizers. We loved it. We went mid week right at opening. It was quiet. We hope that they continue to get enough business to stay open as it was delicious and an amazing experience. lastly the hot tea was also superb.

Samantha L.

Yelp
Transformed to a whole new country. Wear your clean socks because this is a shoes off restaurant. Dishes: best to worst 1) curry 2) pineapple fried rice 3) mango sticky rice: has so much potential to be one of the best but I think they accidentally put salt instead of sugar because it was unbearably salty. I would give it another shot Logistics: -accepts cc -big restaurant with lots of seats but better for parties of 2-6 -metered, street parking

Erica W K.

Yelp
The experience is quite unique and cool! We had to take off our shoes to enter the restaurant. The waiter then brought us to the table which we had to slot in underneath (quite a cool experience). Food: 3.5/5. The food is averagely good, nothing stood out too much but the food is still decently good. We got the red curry with beef. Blessed that they gave a good portion of meat. The beef is tender and the curry is flavorful. The other dish we got was fried fish. The fish is a bit on the soggy side in my opinion. The spices and seasoning on the fish are good though! Vibes: 4/5. Cool experience! No wait when we were there. The restaurant was even a bit empty when we were there.

Yelp
This is one of the most interesting Thai restaurants I've been to in a while, or ever really! From the moment you walk in, it feels like you're transported to another time/place. It has a pretty nonchalant looking outside so I was surprised in a good way. We were greeted by the sweetest server, Boon, who had us take off our shoes to enter the carpeted restaurant. The ambiance of the place felt classic and traditional with interesting artworks and seating arrangements. Because the setting felt new, I was also inspired to try something new beyond my typical go-to's of pad thai or pad see ew or tom yum goong. Boon recommended the Aang Tong (fried bass fillet on a spiced gravy-ish sauce, sooo yummy) and Khao Soi (an egg noodle chicken curry topped with crispy noodles - the crispy noodles were ehh but the flavor of the curry was delicious). I also had their Thai iced tea which was nice and strong, which I like! My mom diluted hers with water for her own taste preference. Will definitely come back to try my fave Thai dishes and see how they compare, but overall this was a great adventurous experience :)

Naomi C.

Yelp
WEAR SOCKS Okay. Now that I got that across, once you enter, there will be no one to greet you at the door. Just wait until someone comes to take your shoes and lead you to the dining area. He told us there was only him serving and two people in the kitchen so service would be slow, but I didn't notice a difference in service. The only tip is that if he comes near you, I would get his attention if you need something but he is fairly attentive. Sa-Te (4 skewers): I mean, it was good. Skewers can't be messed up but we got chicken and nom nom! gaeng ga ree: yellow curry - it was good! gaeng kheaw wan: green curry - it was spicy (which it does say so in the description). I wasn't a super big fan of this one but to be honest, I don't really like green curry. King & I Favorite Shish Kebabs: I MEAN LIKE COME ON. NOM NOM NOM. THREE noms it was so good i loved it. The meat was perfect - if only I liked shrimp....... Pad Thai: it was pretty good, mid :) Pineapple Fried rice: yes! It was delicious and good. TLDR: everything was good, try the king & I favorite shish kebabs.

Greg W.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious, my favorite neighborhood Thai spot! I haven't gotten a single item that I didn't enjoy. All of the dishes that I have tried were very flavorful. I'd recommend the Pumpkin Curry, Yellow Curry, Crispy Pork Belly, Tom Yum fried rice and the Fried fish

Jeevan S.

Yelp
An older stalwart that has been around long enough to weather all storms and have a devoted following with good reason: flavorful food at great prices and a very unique ambience with wood-carved interiors. Good food, good service, and a cozy and unique enclosure--what's not to like?

Thi T.

Yelp
Ordered the pad see ew with tofu to go and i'm so so disappointed to say the noodles are extremely soggy, all broken up into little pieces and leave a powdery sticky aftertaste in your mouth, the tofu also tasted a little sour. I couldn't even taste the flavor of pad see ew because the powder aftertaste was too overwhelming.

Yelp
The first Thai restaurant I ever visited more than 30 years ago, Khan Toke is still a gem. Go for the atmosphere alone. I have traveled extensively in Thailand & this place holds its own. Drawbacks? Well, our table ordered the tri tip papaya salad appetizer, but there was barely a hint of papaya & the steak was pounded out & cooked to death. Other than that, the curries are lovely & the ambience can't be beat.

Allie G.

Yelp
I've never written a 1 star review before and debated even writing this one, but sadly I think it's necessary. I visited Khan Toke Thai House with three friends, excited for a tasty dinner in a unique, authentic environment. One of my friends arrived early and was seated, so when the rest of us arrived, we took off our shoes (as the signage requested) at the entrance and joined her at the table. About 5 minutes later, the server approached us, seemingly to give us menus. But when he noticed my task-trained service dog, his tone immediately turned outraged and he told us we had to leave. I wasn't phased by this at first, thinking he hadn't noticed the vest, and we calmly explained that this was a service animal I needed to have with me. In response, the server doubled down, said he was refusing service, and angrily stormed off, stomping so forcefully that the floor literally shook. We remained seated, mostly in shock, and then began discussing what we should do. The server returned and raised his voice at us, angrily yelling that he has the right to refuse service to anyone and demanding to see our (shoeless) feet to verify that we had removed our shoes. We told him that we were leaving but that this refusal wasn't ADA compliant and he stormed off once again. On our way out, he returned to shout at us one more time, this time in front of a large party waiting to be seated. As we exited, we noticed a sign on the front door, clearly stating that service animals were welcome. I sincerely hope that Khan Toke's next patron with a service animal does not go through a similar experience. I was disappointed not only by the refusal of service, but by the way I was publicly shouted at and degraded by this server. Needless to say, I would not return.

Yelp
Great food with an amazing ambiance and interior decor. The lamb curry was phenomenal and the mango sticky rice was incredible value. The service was fantastic.

Yelp
Recently ate there the food was marvelous. Today had the Glass Noodle Salad hands down my favorite item on the menu.. Thx for rectifying last weeks incident...

Pixie B.

Yelp
Excellent food and ambiance/beautiful interior. The service was also great and it was the best Thai that we've had in the city, really enjoyed it and will most definitely be back. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Rice paper wrapped prawns were good. Fisherman's soup was an over cooked, chewy mess. Service was pleasant and prompt. That there were only 3 tables seated at 7:30, on a Friday night, makes me think there are more misses than hits.

Debra E.

Yelp
Honestly worst service I've had in years or ever. So rude and obviously the waitress was wanting to go home. We drove an hr to go the a place that we remembered years ago packed and full of life to an empty depressing wasteland. By the way food was good! Which makes us so sad. We will NEVER return. There was no Thai spirit in this place. Wow. What a waste of a night AND MONEY. To the cooks well done ... to the ladies - you suck my thai coconuts.

Katherine T.

Yelp
Such an interesting dinner experience! When you enter the restaurant, you're required to take off your shoes and you dine on mats which was definitely unique. It's also pretty quiet inside so it can feel a little awkward to have loud conversations. The atmosphere and interior decoration definitely made you feel like you were in Thailand! For the food, we shared a pineapple fried rice, pad see ew, mus-a-mun curry, tom yum soup, and sur rong hai. We shared family style and it was definitely the right amount of food. Tom yum soup portion size was a bit smaller than expected, but just enough for five people to have one bowl each. The curry wasn't like any curry I'd had before but the coconut flavor was very fragrant and it was pretty tasty. Everything else was delicious as well and I'd definitely recommend going family style so that you can taste multiple items :)

Mirba E.

Yelp
I got takeout from here recently, I had been curious about this place for quite awhile. I was pleasantly surprised by the interior, it felt like I stepped into someone's very decorated home with tons of wood finishes. I saw there are separated dining areas, very interesting ambiance. We got the wings, green curry and pad Thai. They were all quite good. The host was super friendly when I picked up. I hope to dine in soon.

Stefanie C.

Yelp
When my friend and I first entered Khan Toke, there was no one around to greet or direct us. Because my friend had come here before, he knew to wait until someone took our shoes and led us to the restaurant portion of the building. Beautiful place with so much cultural décor to take in. And a unique experience sitting at the table with our feet dangling in the pit beneath us. Extensive menu, though we knew we'd both get the Pad Thai. It was pretty good and filling. Honestly the experience was more memorable than the food... and definitely the drinks. I didn't get any because of the limited selection. There were a bunch of cheap beers and wines, and unfortunately my friend got a house white wine that tasted awful. I don't think that's happened at a restaurant for me before. Easy to get here via bus, which I appreciate. Busy street in case you're trying to find parking, but it's like most other spots in the Sunset District. Service was fairly low-touch. Restrooms were clean, though it felt weird to go without shoes on. I'm not sure whether or not I'd come back here, but there ARE lots of other items on the menu, so I'd try something like Tom Yum.

Jessie H.

Yelp
Finally gave this place a try. Im really sorry to say that I was not impressed. To be honest It was good but just simple thai food with no flare and nothing special. There was nothing that made this place stand out. The food came out barely warm and was lack luster. The atmosphere, decor and seating where odd and dated. It seemed a bit dusty in there. It was nostalgic but in creepy in a way. Would not return, seems like more of a place to order food to go.

Melody P.

Yelp
I've come to Khan Toke several times, and each time is delicious and wonderful. Starting with the atmosphere, it has a very nice and quaint interior. The tables are sunken into the ground, and you take your shoes off at the door. Every time I've gone, it's been pretty empty compared to how big the restaurant is. It's nice to have the space though. The food is delicious! The fried rice is always cooked really well and has some very great flavors. The shrimp in a blanket is probably the best I've had so far. Also, their thai tea is some of the best thai tea I've had as well! It's not too sweet and is a bit darker in color (so a nice tea flavor comes through). Last time I went, we asked our server for extra spice and he brought us three different kinds! We were able to try fresh cut chili peppers in our curry.

Maria G.

Yelp
This is our favorite place. My husband brought me here for a date night and I thought nothing of the place before I walked in... but inside, it's like you're in a different country. The place is beautiful and very authentic. You even seat on the floor! The food is delicious. We always order the Yellow curry, chicken pad Thai and pineapple fried rice with pork, and all of them are DELICIOUS! On top of amazing food, Boon, the server, is our favorite! He's a one man show and the only waiter around. He always welcomes you with a smile and takes the time to explain the dishes, even when the place is full!! 10 out of 10!! What a hidden gem!!!!

Pam P.

Yelp
Our family really enjoyed all their foods!!! The service was excellent and swift! We were amazed of the ambiance of the restaurant, really tickled our interest in Thai culture that we briefly experienced through their food!

Trieu H.

Yelp
I love first time coming here very impressed like i come to thailand before. Wish all good food

Jake H.

Yelp
Food was fine but the service was incredibly slow. A 1 course dinner for 3 took nearly 2 hours. Sat for at least 20 minutes before we were helped. Shoes off policy meant to whole restaurant smell like feet

Nisa F.

Yelp
This restaurant is very authentic & you have to take off your shoes when you enter. I enjoyed the food but the soup was bland & I wouldn't recommend it. My favorites were the Pineapple Fried Rice & Pad See Ew. | IG: Smackinfood

Erin K.

Yelp
VEGAN REVIEW I've passed by this Thai place for years now, but have never even considered going until recently. Upon entering, I was asked to take off my shoes. I was wearing some expensive shoes so I was nervous about leaving them at the doorway, but to be respectful, I did. We were lead to a table in the back. Each table appears to be only a foot off the ground but the floor under the tables dip down so that when you're sitting, your legs are under the table. You could also sit cross-legged which I love doing at home so I did that. I ordered the fried tofu app that comes with a peanut tamarind sauce and the Kee Mao with tofu which I confirmed was vegan with the server. The tofu was kind of bland so I used a lot of the sauce. The Kee Mao was delicious. A little on the spicy side but really flavorful and delicious. This is a cute date night spot. The decor and the table set up is really cool, but I would recommend wearing shoes with socks otherwise you would be barefoot walking around the restaurant.

Nick H.

Yelp
Food came out very quick and had great presentation with a flavor that matched. Fantastic environment as well, best Thai I've had in SF!

Dana C.

Yelp
I got food poisoning from takeout at this restaurant. Totally disgusting. Do not eat here.

Karen M.

Yelp
Beautiful atmosphere, lovely art and sunken garden tables. We enjoyed every dish. The service was excellent, large portions and very reasonable prices. Only complaint was the hot tea wasn't really very hot. Highly recommend for a peaceful and delicious meal.

Lewis B.

Yelp
love the atmosphere of this place, very retro and vibrant. As a vegetarian I was happy to find lots of veggie appetizers, curries, and other dishes. Prices are really great too!

Peter V.

Yelp
Food was amazing! Great options for vegetarians & meat eaters alike. It's very cozy and a great place to have a long meal. I recommend ordering a bunch of apps and entrees and sharing them family style with table. Yellow curry & pineapple fried rice were some of my favorites! The staff was also super nice.

Tallia S.

Yelp
First time here recommended by a friend who lives in the neighborhood and it did not disappoint! So delicious and has become my new favorite Thai restaurant that I've found. The service was fast and efficient, as well as the inside being very pleasant to eat in. Taking your shoes off in the front, and sitting in deep tables. Super cute! And can't wait to bring others here.

Rachel D.

Yelp
The service, great architecture and wonderful ambiance sets you up for a great dining experience here. Each item was well balanced and my sister and I loved the singha to go with my meal Can't reccomend their mango dishes enough, super delicious and the fried banana topped off a great meal

Sasha S.

Yelp
Khan Toke staff and new owners, your restaurant will only survive if you pay attention to a few basic, fundamental things: - Cook the food. If you are going to use frozen seafood, at least thaw it and cook it before serving it. Scallops are not meant to be served frozen. - Replace the filthy, stained carpets. Just because guests do not wear shoes does not mean the carpet will stay clean. The restaurant smells bad. - Hire adequate staff to wait tables. The wait for any kind of service was much too long. Not a good experience. Won't be going back again. Sorry to see this place decline so much.

Lisa N.

Yelp
Very unique experience here! The first thing you do is to take off your shoes. The whole restaurant is carpeted and you sit down in hori gotatsu style tables. Three stars bc the food was meh but a cool experience.

Melan J.

Yelp
Excellent and long standing Thai restaurant in the Outer Richmond District of San Francisco. Tremendous ambiance that carries you to another world. Besides the interior the food is excellent. Start with the Som Tom salad of sliced papay and veggies in a spicy vinegar sauce plus the Tom Yom soup made up of tangy spices, coconut milk and tofu. Main dishes to try are the yellow curry with chicken, Moo Gau Pro pork and the Clucking Chicken with green beans. All delilghtful and the server was so nice he sat with us for a bit. Make sure you sit at the tables with the depressed floors for a fun experience.

Lisa K.

Yelp
This is not your typical Thai restaurant experience that you'll find in the bay (or maybe anywhere in the states) - in a good way! but keep an open mind. Once you are inside, you're asked to remove your shoes (tip: wear socks) before you walk through the carpeted restaurant. You can wear communal slippers for going to the bathroom (again: wear socks). I really hope you're not thinking the place is gross or unhygienic. It simply feels like I'm walking into someone's home decorated in the 1970s with imported Thai decor! The food also tastes homey and delicious. We asked our server for recs and you know how some servers are like "everything's good" or like "it really depends on what you like"? This guy KNEW what was good and was not shy about telling you. Per his recommendation, we got the southern Thai style curry with lamb, the fish cakes (the best I've had in the states!), and this deep fried fish dish. My deepest apologies for not knowing the name of the last dish but just show the attached picture and say you want this! Surprisingly the pad see ew disappointed me the most (which is usually my go to). The Thai iced tea also tasted a little too sweet (maybe straight from a can?) but the overall dining experience was delicious. We came here after a quiet Sunday stroll through sutro baths. We went right when it opened and was seated and served right away. If I'm ever back in this neighborhood in the city, I will definitely be back. I think it would also be a fun place to take out of town guests who usually don't have access to good Thai food. This place will be a treat!

Yelp
This was our second time coming here and we will definitely come back in large part because of the incredible server Boon. He was so friendly and helpful he gave us recommendations as well as many of the customers around us. We ordered the pad thai with chicken and the panang curry. They were both very good and service was prompt and attentive despite the fact that Boon appeared to be the only server. The ambiance and experience is very unique and I would recommend it to all!

Barbara B.

Yelp
The food was great, the vibe is fabulous and the server was so wonderfully attentive.

Joseph A.

Yelp
I opted to have Dinner delivered tonight with my choice being a Pork Pad Thai. On the plus side the serving is large making it more then sufficient in volume even for a large eater, one downside being that the pork was tough , and not well trimmed. The dish was also heavier then I am used to , and lacked balance even with the addition of the provided lime wedge. Not horrible , but also not great being being mostly just noodles and strong tasting pork.
