Over the course of this summer, I've tried numerous restaurants in the Hamptons and this by far was the biggest disappointment. I made a reservation on Tock (and paid $100/person in advance) for Omakase in their veranda. I was really looking forward to this meal as I'd seen great reviews and I haven't had omakase since before COVID. Our reservation was for 8:30pm and a few hours before, I got an email from them saying my reservation was changed to 9pm. Since I did not initiate this change, I tried calling (they never picked up) and emailing them to ensure my reservation was still for 8:30pm. They eventually emailed back to confirm the 8:30pm time. When we arrived at 8:25pm they asked us if we wanted to be inside or outside, which I found strange since my reservation was specifically for outside and I had made sure not to choose the indoor option when making the reservation. I told them we were only comfortable sitting outside and they said they were "slammed outside" and we would have to wait for a while, but they would not even give us an estimate. All in all, the wait ended up being 17 minutes which was not terrible, but it would have been nice to have an estimate.
While we were waited to be seated, we already started to notice how slow and inattentive the service was. We overheard numerous tables asking for items they'd ordered because they never showed up. Once we were seated, we began to experience the poor service as well. I had three people in my party and I told them that only I would be doing the kosher omakase and everyone else would do the normal menu. The sushi was brought out 2 pieces at a time which was nice since it was somewhat similar to a normal bar seating omakase experience. However, the rice was cold. I was unsure if that was solely because we weren't sitting at the counter or if they intended to make it like that, so I wrote that off as a mistake due to COVID.
After several rounds of pieces, I realized that everyone seemed to be receiving the kosher omakase, so I mentioned this to our waiter and asked him to double check that the other people in my party would receive the normal menu. He assured me that they would be getting the regular non-kosher pieces, but that they just hadn't come out yet. While the fish was clearly great quality and tasted great, the pieces were severely lacking in diversity and creativity. We had probably about 4-5 pieces of tuna and 3-4 pieces of salmon. Although they were all a different cut, or had different toppings, it felt very homogeneous. They used the same fish over and over and the same toppings over and over, but mixed and matched a little differently. There was limited creativity with the pieces compared to other high-end omakases I have had. Finally, we receive our last pieces of sushi, and still no non-kosher pieces for the rest of my group. I again mentioned this to the waiter and he pretended like nothing was abnormal and did not admit that they got something wrong, which was incredibly frustrating. All in all, this omakase was far smaller than others we've had, and other people in my group were still hungry.
Our waiter told us the dessert would be a matcha crepe, which we were all excited for. However, he then brought out a much less exciting dish of custard and a floral gelatin. When I asked if the gelatin was vegetarian/kosher, he had to go check which was a little concerning that they were going to serve it to me without ensuring that it met my dietary restrictions that they said they could accommodate.
Throughout the whole the night service was really lacking. The waiter did not know very much about the items he served us. Additionally, after we finished our cocktails, no one ever came by to ask us if we'd like another. The whole experience did not feel authentic. As a $200/person omakase this is not even close to worthwhile and it was very disappointing.
