"This family-owned business has been an institution in the Murfreesboro community for over 40 years (Roots author Alex Haley was a guest). It’s a cafeteria-style, meat-and-three soul food destination that also serves delicious desserts like peach cobbler and chess pie. The location is strictly takeout now, so be sure to have a destination in mind for scarfing down your meal." - Eater Staff, Delia Jo Ramsey

This was delicious. I was eating a very late lunch and wandered in based on the other reviews. The hot water corn bread is indeed amazing (it's not sweet), and.i would normally tell you I don't care about cornbread. Do not skip it . The daily menu is on your left as you approach the steak table. I missed it! I think anything fried is in the back and brought out for you. However, I loved everything I had and cannot wait to return.

I have been eating at Kleer-Vu for Years now. I have nothing but Great reviews & things to say about the food here. Always good no matter what is on the menu. Definitely home style cooking! I will say the peach cobbler is the BEST I've had since my childhood! Highly Highly recommend!!

This is my new favorite place. The food is made from scratch and it’s delicious. The people behind the counter are warm and friendly. Can’t wait to go back!

Google
Old time southern charm abounds in this soul food/southern diner restaurant that features fried chicken and ribs as Mainstays. The fried chicken was definitely good but the restaurant s version of a hush puppy was oddly flavored. Iced tea was not particularly flavorful either. Veggie sides are a definite plus with green beans, greens, Mac and cheese and more included in the platter price. Monday and Tuesday feature a senior discount of 10 percent as well

A true Murfreesboro staple. I grew up in Murfreesboro and ate there often with my family, now I come whenever I’m back in town. Family owned, best southern food you’ll ever find. My favorite is the Turkey and Dressing!

Yelp
I love this place! The soul food is everything. I have been coming here since I was in high school and the food has always been hot , fast, and delicious! The service is great and fast. I haven't been able to go in and sit for years but when they announced dine in was open, I ran! My lunch was awesome! If you are in Murfreesboro or coming to Murfreesboro and don't stop by, you're missing out and missing the point of southern good food! The best hot water cornbread ever! The location is near our square and it's building transport you back in time some! Love it!

Mike V.

Yelp
I love this place!!!! The best fried chicken and southern favorites in Murfreesboro. Unfortunately, it has changed so much since Covid--no more dining in only carry-out now, but at least the doors are still open! If you like a good meat and three, get your buns down here and give Klee-Vu Lunchroom a shot! Support the amazing people here and enjoy one of the best lunches you've ever had!!!

Jan H.

Yelp
You don't get any better hometown food than this. Every time I go home to Murfreesboro to visit I always have to stop in to see Anita and the staff of Kleer-vu and grab a home cooked meal. This is a staple place. I always see hometown folk that I haven't seen in years. Catch up with friends from high school and meet new people that are passing through. A diverse community that shares a meal and hear stories. They no longer serve inside but have to-go. Food is hot, fresh, homemade and good. Especially the desserts oh and that corn bread. My dad orders it by the bunch and freezes it. If you're in the city and visiting stop by and check it out. The service is great.

Jeremy P.

Yelp
I have been here several times and each time the food is AMAZING! It's setup cafeteria style where you walk down the line and tell the server what you would like. The peach cobbler is the best I have ever had ANYWHERE, in my entire life. I sat in the parking lot and ate the entire plate.

Inez L.

Yelp
Down home food prepared like my grandmother made it even smother fried the chicken in a skillet like mamaw did and she could cook!!!

Thommy S.

Yelp
I've really missed coming here because of my work schedule. I haven't came here in years. I finally got the chance to come back on Saturday for lunch. They've been around Murfreesboro for awhile now, and if you're in the area looking for home cooking, I definitely recommend them. There was no dine in at the moment when we went, but you can always take it to go. Even though the line seems long, it goes by pretty fast. On the day that we went, they had fried chicken so I got fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and Mac n cheese. My other half got chicken n dumplings, green beans, and some corn. I also got their peach cobbler. I'll start off with the chicken. The fried chicken was fried perfectly. It wasn't over fried or under fried. The seasoning was also good. There are times where you get fried chicken at certain places, and the fried chicken has so much going on. Not here, though! The Mac n cheese was also pretty good. Onto the chicken n dumplings. I really liked their chicken n dumplings a lot! It was very yummy. Their cornbread was also pretty good, too. It's different from other places. I'm thinking it's like a deep fried corn bread, but I could be wrong. The food was good here. My favorite thing here was my peach cobbler. Oh. my. god.... the peach cobbler is definitely a must try. It was made perfectly. From the sweetness to the crust that I got, it was just oh so perfect! I can't wait to free up my schedule to have a chance to come back!

Yelp
Carry out only since the beginning of Covid, but generous portions and still great food

Jesse Q.

Yelp
Went by my favorite restaurant in murfreesboro tn The food was fresh the service was excellent And the hot water cornbread still is just as Delicious as it's been these many years they haven't opened for sit down I simply ate it In the car I wish I still lived here it's that good

Elizabeth H.

Yelp
Delicious food!!! Been before and will return. ... Friendly staff! Currently only takeout available.

Kirk S.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place! And there is something to be said about a restaurant that could care less about getting a website. Haha....They don't need any help whatsoever to do what they're doing!

Robert S.

Yelp
Kleer Vu has been on my must-try list for so long I made it my #1 priority to eat there this week. I was not disappointed! Nothing fancy here, just an unassuming storefront and good sized parking lot adjacent to the restaurant. Go in, stand in line and peruse the hand-written menu as you move up. I chose the Fried Chicken, with Beets and Creamy (mashed) potatoes. All lunches come with cornbread, and this was my first time having the hot water cornbread. Make sure you grab a tray before you get to the counter or they will assume you are ordering to-go. The food was good and filling, the atmosphere comfortable. It was nice and peaceful, and now I understand why this restaurant has endured for years!

David B.

Yelp
Hungry for good food? This is where you find it. Don't have a million bucks for lunch? This is is where I belong! Love it!

Dawn F.

Yelp
I've been coming here for the Chicken and Dressing since high school. They're quick and the food is always hot! Make sure you get some extras of the cornbread, you be happy you did

Scott M.

Yelp
Always excellent! Food is delicious! Daughter's choice for her birthday dinner of her favorites fried chicken, turnip greens and cornbread for whole family celebration!!

Stephanie Janine T.

Yelp
I drove from Antioch TN to eat at Kleer Vu. The 25 min drive was worth it. My first visit, it was Excellent, staff, service and price. I ordered fried fish and fries, pig feet and fried chicken to have supper for the weekend. OMG!!!!. Supporting small business. I am going back tomorrow Friday March 3 2023. Ms. Anita Norman is the co- owner and manager. She is also my wonderful church member at Sandhill COC.

Jan W.

Yelp
I was born and raised in what is officially called "The Boro". My grandmother lived up the street from Kleer-Vu so my family ate here all the time. My friends and I would walk past this on the way to Central middle school. It was a grocery store before it became a restaurant but same owners have been there for 40 plus years. The food is true southern style soul food straight from grandmas table with sweet tea and hot water corn bread and homemade peach cobbler. The food is hot fresh and lip smacking good. The atmosphere is local hometown folks. I stop in every chance I get when I go back home to visit. Although my grandma has past on, stopping in and eating at Kleer-Vu feels like home.

Kevin L.

Yelp
No chitterlings (chitlins?) when I came in for lunch, but they did have pig feet! And Precious, I was hungry. I got the meat and two, and when I picked out pig feet, the ladies behind the counter all offered to have me taste some before I committed. Apparently the stereotypes about Chinese people eating everything under the sun (wasn't there recently an article about soaking chicken eggs in virginal boy urine as a local delicacy?) has not hit the South yet. The two feet were piping hot and served with hot sauce/vinegar. It might not look like the most appetizing thing, but if you love oxtail or pho with tendon, you will be a fan of this stuff. Nuggets of luscious meat sandwiched between plenty of tendon and skin, mm. I was definitely not as good at finishing off the pig feet as my co-worker, but it was a solid meal that strangely enough tasted healthier than the fried chicken. If you don't want to opt for the more traditional soul food elements, there was also white fish, saucy ribs, mysterious "chicken and sauce." For sides, I went with mac n' cheese and turnip greens, both of which were NOT on the salty side, which I appreciated. Corn bread is a white corn meal fried up in little dollops. I prefer the sweeter and more grainy ones that can be fried up, but these were good with a splash of sauce. Washed it all down with some unsweet tea and definitely no room for their dessert spread. Comes out to about $10 after tax and whatnot.

Yelp
I've been going to this restaurant for years absolutely love the service and amazing food A+ for consistency over the years

Jennie E.

Yelp
I have ate here for years and love the food but today I called in to place a pick up order and heard one of the rudest comments ever and I will no longer be supporting this business. These are the exact words of the person who picked up the phone when I called to place an order, "see this why I hate picking up the phones, they wanna place a pick up instead of bringing they asses up here, I got a million other things to do." During this time of Covid it is just easier to do a place an order to be picked up. This goes for anything in this day in time. I am all for supporting local businesses/black businesses but that was just out of line and unprofessional.

Jeff M.

Yelp
This place kept me alive during my college days at MTSU. Better than any meat and three in Nashville that I have tried. The fried chicken, chicken and dressing, meatloaf were all amazing and all the vegetables are fresh and full of flavor. The hot water cornbread was delicious. The portions are great and the owner was always friendly. I hope they are still in business because the next time in am Murfreesboro, I will be stopping there for some great food.

Paul M.

Yelp
Started coming here in college (2000). Go back anytime Im.near.The last time I was there I got to the register and the Owner said, "long time no see." It had been 8 years. I love the chicken and dressing and the chocolate chess pie the most. Gotta get back soon.

Trisha J.

Yelp
I love the food! I had a great meal: vegetables & my husband has had it all. Food is delicious Food is very cheap.

Keaunis A.

Yelp
It had been at least 2-3 years since I last seen 2 of my cousins so I decided to spend some time with them in Murfreesboro, TN since I was planning on staying a few days before my cruise to the Bahamas. When my cousins invited me to lunch, they only gave me 2 choices: Italian and Soul Food and guess which one I chose? Yes, Soul Food because good Soul Food is difficult to find. I wasn't sure what to expect since in the Yelp description it said that it was a lunch counter setting. I didn't have a chance to look at the pictures beforehand so I took my chances based on the good reviews. When we walked in, there were people seated at the tables and people waiting in a line to be served at the lunch counter. While we waited, there was a menu on the wall on the left side towards the front of the line. Come to find out that their menu items change daily. I'm a very picky eater so there are some things that I will not try if there are too many ways for a person to prepare the item. In other words, I try to stay with the safe food items, which are items that no matter how people prepare them, they will usually still taste good. Also, once I see the item, if it doesn't look delicious by the way that it's prepared, I probably won't eat it either. With that being said, I chose Fried Chicken, Green Beans, Pinto Beans, Mac and Cheese, Chess Pie, and Sweet Tea. Fried Chicken: This was probably the best tasting meat on the menu. It was perfect! Fried very crispy where there was not a single blob of fat, not greasy, and was seasoned very well. It was so delicious that I didn't even have to add hot sauce for it to taste good. You know what I mean lol. Green Beans: They tasted okay. They didn't have much seasoning, but weren't too bland. I like my green beans to either have a little salty taste or seasoned with bacon or fried meat grease. Mac and Cheese: It was okay. It was kind of bland and wasn't as cheesy as I would have liked. Pinto Beans: They were tasty and not too dry. Chess Pie: I didn't get a chance to taste it because I was too full to eat it with my meal. I added it here so that you knew that it was an option. Hot Water Cornbread: Now this was very different than any other cornbread that I've tasted! It was very delicious! It was crispy, but not greasy on the outside. It was very moist on the inside. It wasn't too sweet (I don't really care for very sweet cornbread). Sweet Tea: It wasn't as sweet as I usually like my sweet tea. I like my tea very sweet. Like a diabetic coma sweet. So overall, I enjoyed my food and am excited to try some of the other dishes. Now, I can't finish without mentioning some of the food that my cousins ordered. Meatloaf: This looked and tasted like imitation meat that was put into a meatloaf. This looked and tasted disgusting. Banana Pudding: When I think of banana pudding I think of crisp vanilla wafers, creamy vanilla pudding, and at least two layers or so. This banana pudding was not it. The consistency was very mushy since it tasted like every single ingredient was mashed together. And I'm not sure what the other ingredient was that they added. Maybe custard? Anyways, it seemed like they prepared the banana pudding and then baked it in the oven. I'm all for a different way to prepare dishes, but this was not a good idea.

Yelp
This is such a hole in the wall place! A friend of my mom told us about it while we ere looking for a good soul food lunch. The building is small and in the middle of a neighborhood. When you walk in there's a small set up of tables and booths. The food is served just like an actual cafeteria. You get a tray and your choice of meat and vegetables. My parents, myself, and my brother all got plenty of food and it only cost us 46 dollars. My parents both got meat with three sides and a dessert. My brother got meat and three sides and I got meat and four sides. You get your choice of meat and it changes each day. And the food was AMAZING! The chicken was nice and fresh. The macaroni and spaghetti was delicious. The staff was super friendly. While I was paying for my food, I had my daughter in my arms so one of the workers took my food and sat it at the table for me. I will definitely be coming back here.

J H.

Yelp
It is so so important to just be polite. Im not sure how good the food is because they were rude over the phone. I bet it's probably good, but I chose Jeff's bc they are always welcoming

Avina V.

Yelp
Always passed by and wanted to try a meal because everyone says it's great. I stopped by today, all I can say is it sucked. My cousin and I presences wasn't acknowledged when we came in, it was our first time there and we didn't know how to exactly order or what came with what. All they did was point at a sign. We were planning on dining in, but took it to go instead because we didn't feel welcome. Never planning on going back.

C B.

Yelp
Hole in the wall type joint. Food was on point. Barbecue nice and tender, juicy and tasty. True when they say your aunt was kidnapped and made to cook for everyone!

Jeremy A.

Yelp
This is as old school lunchroom as you can get. The place is converted into a restaurant from a house it seems and you really get the feeling you are eating in someones living room. They rotate the menu and the BBQ Ribs sell out fast, so get early if you want to get them here. I went with the BBQ pork shoulder which came with creamed corn / macaroni and cheese. Everything was great and if I make it back to Murfreesboro, Ill be back to get some catfish next time!

Laura H.

Yelp
I was first introduced to Kleer-Vu as a college student in the 90's and what a wonderful place for someone missing home, as this is your consummate Southern meat and three. I recently ate there again with a friend and found the quality of the food has not changed in the last 20 years. Upon arriving, it's important to know you need to pick up a tray and silverware then proceed through the cafeteria-style line. The servers are not unfriendly but do keep the line moving. (It's no soup Nazi situation... this IS the South, but don't linger too long in making your selections). I had fried chicken - thighs, of course as they are the best part of the chicken. The two thighs were ample in size, perfectly crispy on the outside and juicy and flavorful on the inside. I opted for green beans and mac and cheese as sides and was happy with my selections. Kleer-Vu is a Murfreesboro establishment and a must-visit for anyone new to the area or one who is craving their Mom's home cooking.

Kevin Z.

Yelp
First came in and appreciated the family owned atmosphere. I got some Baby back ribs, fried chicken, mash potatoes, and nice pinto beans. First the ribs were the best I have ever tasted! They fall right off the bone and the BBQ sauce on them is heaven. The fried chicken tasted good, not great, but good. The mash potatoes are real and freshly made, no out of a tin can mash potatoes. Lastly the beans were nice and heartwarming for me, great beans indeed. This little place is a great history-piece of the Boro, as it's been here since the 80's maybe even longer than that. If you want real southern soul food, then this is a place to try! Note- they change what they serve depending on the day of the week. I came in on a Friday.

Charles B.

Yelp
The food is still great but they have really raised their prices. A meat and two plate used to be around $6.00 but today I paid $22.00 for one meat and two plate and two cobblers. That's outrageous.

Callie G.

Yelp
I love soul food and meat and three restaurants, so I was excited to try Kleer-Vu for the first time after hearing such good things about it from my co-workers. We all agreed to take our lunch there, and we all left feeling underwhelmed. I think they may have had an "off day" when we visited. The food was bland, and my co-workers agreed it was better the last time they visited. To make things worse, our group's table was directly under a filthy ceiling fan with 5 inch tendrils of clumpy grey dust hanging off of the blades. I began screaming internally when one of the staff members started to complain about being hot and went to turn on the fans. Thankfully, we were done eating as the fine powder of an eon's worth of dust slowly sprinkled onto our plates and into our cups like snow. I will stick to Jeff's Restaurant down the street.

Todd B.

Yelp
Cracker Barrel is great, but this tastes like the food your grandmother made for supper. Wonderful fried chicken, iced tea, turnip greens, and a great pie selection make this the place I head for southern cookin' when I'm back home from California in the Boro.

Reginald W.

Yelp
Always great, had meatloaf, fried chicken, potatoes, turnip greens, macaroni and cheese, black eyed peas, and that wonderful corn bread. One of my favorite places.

Angela C.

Yelp
Hmm, I would like to say the food was delicious!!! I had fried chicken, cabbage and Mac and cheese! Their hot water corn bread is to die for!!! The environment is very pleasant and reminded me of my real home town, Charleston, MS. The ladies that serves behind the line are very professional, quick and kind. I would highly recommend this place..

John M.

Yelp
It's my favorite spot in town. Always has been. Always will be. The staff is friendly, and the food is heaven-sent.

The Main Reviewer X.

Yelp
Oh how I want to give a great review but I just can't. Let me first say that the food is awesome. The hot water cornbread is soooooo great! Sadly we will not be returning to enjoy this super delicious soul food. :-( The problem is the location and the owner. It is off of E Main St but is smack dab in the ghetto. Last time I was there, across the street were 2 groups of young guys yelling at each other from the opposite street corners. I don't know if they were gangs or what, but I was afraid somebody was going to get shot or stabbed or something. This was lunchtime in broad daylight!! It was extremely unnerving and while the food is good, it's not worth a bullet wound. Also the owner apparently inherited the business from her mother and sadly lacks the "personal touch." I don't know if she just doesn't like white people or what but I saw her be condescending and extremely rude to every single white person including myself that was in line. It's setup cafeteria style and she is the person that was running the cash register and everytime I've seen her there she was always like this but I just wanted to chalk it up to her having a bad day or something, but finally I realized, this is how I've seen her be for years so I just had to accept that if she doesn't value us as customers, then we won't be her customers. Money is green, not white or black, so when you run a business you need to get over any issues you have with people and focus on being glad you have customers who appreciate your product. It's too bad really. Alot of people I know absolutely LOVE the food there but refuse to go because of these 2 issues.

Charles S.

Yelp
Kleervu is one of the best meat and three's in Middle Tennessee; it is certainly the best in Murfreesboro. It's been there since 1940something, serving up soul food and Southern favorites to everyone from college kids to white collar and blue collar workers alike. Nearly 15 years elapsed between my previous visit and my most recent one, but not a thing had changed. Even at 1:30 on a Wednesday the lunch crowd was respectable. I had no trouble getting my food and a table, but even if they had been busy, I'd imagine I would've been moved along with the efficiency you would expect from people who have been working there for decades. The hot water cornbread is some of my favorite cornbread; the texture and flavor are unique. Served in portions about the size of a deck of cards, the outside has a wonderful crisp and the inside is soft, light and just a hint of sweet. It doesn't taste like the butter and salt you expect from southern cornbread -it's just different, and very very good. Today I had the fried chicken. The chicken, even though sitting on the steam table, was moist and the skin was coated with just the right amount of breading and fried in fresh cooking oil; I could taste the seasonings in the breading instead of the other fried foods that had been cooked in the oil. I selected turnip greens (my all-time fave) and macaroni and cheese for my sides. They were each Southern as can be: the mac and cheese was creamy and soft and the greens were rich with bacon fat and quite tender. In somewhat unrelated news, I don't recommend this place if you're on a diet. Actually, I guess there is one thing that has changed in between my visits; the prices have gone up. I don't think they've outpaced inflation, but with a drink, my meat and two came to $10.42, not quite the deal I remember, but still a price I'd be willing to pay the next time I find myself in the area.

Jeff S.

Yelp
This place is awesome. The corn bread is my favorite. Leave room for desert. The chess pie is just like granny's.

LuAnne H.

Yelp
We love Kleer-Vu! The fried chicken is my favorite and I love the spaghetti too. Really everything there is so yummy including the homemade pies and cobblers. It will remain a solid choice in our eating out rotation.

Lashona M.

Yelp
Maybe my expectations were too high but I'd have to rate it as okay. I was really looking forward to becoming a regular but I'm still on a mission for soul food in m-boro. I had whiting(too many bones/fishy) greens, white beans, and mac and cheese.

Ebony B.

Yelp
Been a patron since high school days,15 years or so ago. Always good quality food and friendly faces, the same ladies are actually still at the counter. Always polite and smiling. Gave 4 stars only because it seems portion sizes are getting smaller, while prices are the same. Will continue to go here though, never any issues with the food.

Todd R.

Yelp
I admit it. I am from North of the Mason Dixon. I love authentic true food. No chain restaurants - gimme a diner, dive, or roadside place that let's the food speak for itself. You will get as an authentic an experience here as your will ever get. This is a Southern-Soul-Food-Grease-Haters-Beware-Decadence. You will even get a side of sass thrown in if you arrive at the counter and don't know what you want to eat. They will tell you to make up your "damn mind" as they so nicely say. It's there way of saying its all good and you won't go wrong. I usually choose to let them plate what they think is the best. Tell em a meat in 3 that they would have for their lunch and you wont be disappointed. There will always be a line but the locals are entertainment enough to just watch. It is worth asking the folks in line what they are going to have. Everyone will say something different that is the best. My first time there I asked the guy beside me if it was worth waiting in line. His response (add southern draaaaawl as you read this) "I ask myself that every weekday I eat here. I reckon it is worth it"

Stan J.

Yelp
I love the food and the service here. Great southern soul food at its best. The staff is super friendly and accommodating and the food is great!

Ryan H.

Yelp
Kleer Vu is the epitome of what a good Southern lunchroom should be. Great food and staff with a warm feeling that'll make you feel like you're in someone's grandma's kitchen - probably because you are.

Dale N.

Yelp
I really enjoy Kleer-Vu. It can sometimes be hit and miss, but more than often it's a hit. Meat & 3's are scattered through out Murfreesboro, but for my money this is the best. It has more of the soul food feel to it than others. Fried Chicken is very good, vegetables are usually well cooked and not over cooked. The Hot Water Cornbread is always a subject of conversation for those who have never heard of it or had it. One warning. The sweet tea is, SWEET! We're talking diabetic coma sweet so, be warned. Lunch is always a great time to go and you could see anyone there from politicians, to famous people to the locals.

Lance h.

Yelp
I would say that this is the last/best soulfood/meat n' 3(meat and 3 sides)restaurant ever, but I'll just say that's it's my favorite. Everyday they offer different meats and vegetables to choose from, but they do have delicious fried chicken and hot-water cornbread everyday of the week. The sweet tea is the best I've ever had. While everything here is wonderful, there is one item that is a total stand-out: the meatloaf. It's like big greasey slice of heaven. If you're thinkin' to yourself that you don't much care for meatloaf, well guess what, you'll love it. I've converted many a meatloaf hater personally. I won't go into details about it other than to say that they serve it every Thursday AND they will also be serving fried okra and mashed potatoes as well. I haven't been to this place in 5 years, but if there's one thing in this life that I know, it's that Thursday is meatloaf day at Kleer-Vu. Items I failed to mention include: roast beef, baked ham, ribs, spaghetti, fried fish, baked apples, fried tomatoes, cabbage, black-eyed peas, turnip greens, mac and cheese, pinto beans, beets, potato salad and coleslaw, but bein' that it's a meat n' 3 you probably would have assumed as much. They also offer pickled pigs feet everyday. People order it too. I've seen it happen.

Yelp
This is food that cannot be beat in our area! As a New Orleans native, it's nice to find a place that's HOME COOKED and not a chain. You will LOVE this place. Go!
