La Atolería por Tierra del Sol

This place was absolutely amazing!! We walked in with a big group and they accommodated us with some extra seating. The service was the absolute best--the guy that welcomed us kindly asked if we'd prefer English. When we told him we wanted to practice our Spanish, he talked us to in Spanish but then switched to English when he wanted to make sure we understood. He was very patient with us when we were asking him certain questions about the drinks we were considering. The drinks we ordered included chocolate-atole, some hot chocolate drinks, and a hibiscus drink. We also got a croissant with almonds I think. I LOVED the hibiscus drink, it was really refreshing after a hot day, and they put in a little bit more sweetener per my request. The vibe of the place is really cozy, simplistic, and neat. There's a lot of ingredients they have out on display, and it just felt like a perfect place to hang out and have a sweet drink.

A restaurant, bakery, altole bar and tortilla bar. They offer a nice menu and experiences tasting corn based products from the region. The space is very nice and quite beautiful.

This is a perfect place to drink atole. I noticed that it might also be a place to do some work in the evening and still enjoying atole and sweet bread. Atole is usually drunken in the morning or evening, but this place gives that vive of getting to grab atole any time regardless of the heat because they also offer cold atole. My favorite flavors were coconut, maíz azul, amaranth, mango, yes! I went several days in a row 😅.

This place is a must to taste the authentic maize drinks of Oaxaca. Great service with an explanation as we did the 4 sample tasting. Adjacent bakery is very good as well so you can order & bring over to enjoy with the maize drinks of your choice or coffee. Great vibe, very authentic & true to the local heritage.

First time trying atole and the champurrado was tasty. It was served very hot and the 4 cocoas just added a nice texture and extra taste. Beautiful space.

I really enjoyed this for breakfast. The 3 maize blend with a little sugar was recommended and I got it twice because I enjoyed it so much. The pastries next door are also a great find. Delicious!

The wait is always long, but it's worth it once you step inside. The place is unlike any other I've seen, with its beautiful display of pots filled with different atoles. We decided to try the flight of 8 tastes, but unfortunately, we only enjoyed one of them. However, I must say that the atole was served with a sweet tortilla, and that combination was surprisingly delightful. The ambiance is stunning and carefully designed, but overall, I probably wouldn't choose to visit again.

You have to come and try the atole. I am mexican and have tried atole before and this is reaaaaally good. My german boyfriend had never tried it before and he loved it. Our favourite was the tortilla one. My dad drank atole as a kid everyday and even he loved this one

Amazing food and service, probably the best place we had dinner during our trip in February. The atmosphere was your notch. Can't wait to go back in February 2026.

We have visited Oaxaxca twice, and done most, if not all, the high end recommended restaurants ( although we are pescatarian, which limits the wonderful moles and meats to be found) Tierra del Sol for flavorful and creative dishes, tradition and sustainability focus maybe my favorite. The ingredients are really pronounced in the food flavors. Too bad we found it on our last night in town. I will return. We also visited the atolería, which we loved, also the bakery is superb. The rooftop dining was relaxed . Service was prompt and attentive. You begin downstairs with a bit of orientation an background and some small bites. Then proceed up stairs to the balcony.

Probably one of the best cafes we've been to. The area we sat at was so comfortable I could have slept there. I love how all the various kinds of etole are all there to choose and learn which is which. We chose the trigo which is unsweetened and the cacao which was slightly sweet. Very nice especially on a cool morning. Accompany them well with any of their pastries! Highly recommend visiting here! Excellent service!

This place is an experience! You start off eating fresh homemade salsa and tortillas in one room and then move to the main dining room. The food and plating was excellent and beautiful. As someone who doesn't drink alcohol I would recommend the vanilla refresher. Very good.

We went here after visiting the neighboring botanical gardens. It was a very warm day, high 80's, quite humid as well. When we entered, the hostesses were very kind and welcoming. We were directed to the roof top. VERY beautiful scenery. Service was excellent, our server was knowledgeable and very friendly, unfortunately I've forgotten his name. For the food, it was AMAZING. From the presentation to the flavors, was very impressed. Our group ordered the bone marrow, beef bone, pork shoulder and leg.

Wonderful experience! We stopped in for cocktails and Luz and Maribel were so wonderful that we had to come back. We decided it to pop in for breakfast before heading back stateside. The food was amazing and so many delicious options. We had the bread, it was something like a cake loaf that went well with the coffee! We also had the waffles, fruit, chilaquiles, enfrijolada... I mean I think we ordered the whole menu. One of the best places we dined at in Oaxaca!

Best experience in Oaxaca. We enjoyed it very much, from the fresh tortilla tasting when you walk in to the Live music upstairs on the terrace. delicious soups and main dishes. the turkey mole was the cherry on top. Drinks were good, we asked for spicy refreshing and not too sweet, the bartender made us a custom drink according to our specifications and it was one of the best we had during our week long stay in Oaxaca. The servers were very accommodating and welcoming, the house mezcal they let us try was very smooth. If I would have to choose between the 6-8 restaurants we tried, This would be the one.

Disgusting. If you are a person of any color other than white expect a long wait and see others go in front of you. Besides the colorism the food is horrible and overpriced. Bland food that they pass as "Oaxacan culture". This place is a disgrace to Mexican cuisine and ruined my night. AVOID!

This was the first meal I had in Oaxaca and it set the bar extremely high for everything else I ate. Upon entering, everyone was friendly, offering me both menus and service in English or Spanish. I was guided up to the rooftop with beautiful views and every seat seemed like the best seat in the house. I started off with a delicious cocktail from the bar - the Cabrona - I highly recommend it. Next, I was presented with a molcajete and a number of ingredients. I was told what ingredients to choose in order to make the salsa for my table. I chose chile de agua, chapulines, tomatos and more. The tlayuda was crispy and cheesy and the blue corn tortillas were unbelievable. You can choose what meat you want the tlayuda served with, and I'm glad that I chose chorizo - spicy and perfectly accompanied the cheesy tlayuda. The dish was served with cepiche - an aromatic herb that had a taste like I've never had before. The main dish - huachimole - was a succulent cut of pork covered in a rich traditional sauce served with freshly made tortillas (again, to die for!). The meat was so tender. I sopped up every morsel of the sauce with the delicious meat. I didn't know that I had any room left, but when the server asked if I wanted dessert, I couldn't resist. The chocolate taco had a beautiful mousse with fruits and berries on top. By itself, I would have been more than satisfied with the richness, the texture, and the juxtaposition of the cacao and the sweet fruit, but the chile sauce poured on top just sent me over the edge. The taco was not only delicious, but it was quite possibly one of the most beautiful dishes I've ever seen. On a second trip to Tierra del Sol, I visited their Atoleria. I've had many delicious cups of atole - from atole de avena to maiz to champurrado, but I had never been to a such a wonderful place that just serves different types of atole. Of course, I had to try a flight of atoles - blue corn, white corn with guayaba, champurrado, and tortilla. Each one was so different and delicious in its own way. The white corn with guayaba was the most surprising because of its tartness. It was another highlight of my trip to Oaxaca.

Tierra del Sol is in general my favorite restaurant in Oaxaca for its food quality, variety of dishes, outstanding customer service, and focus on sustainability. We also visited the atolería every day! And the bread was to die for. The ambient on the rooftop was relaxing and cordial. Congratulations to Chef Olga Cabrera (I wish I could have met her in person) and all her team for such an extraordinary place to enjoy life. Until the next one!

Walked here on a Wednesday afternoon in early July 2023. We did not have a reservation but there was a ton of free seating. The patio on the roof was incredible. They have a complementary table service for salsa. They make it from scratch while you pick the ingredients that go into it. We didn't like ours that much though - it needed lime and more salt. I ordered the lechon tacos and my fiance ordered their brisket, suadero, and chrizo tetelas. We both loved our orders but needed to ask for lime for all our dishes. We regret not ordering a salad because we didn't have any fiber in our meal. We both ordered a drink and ended up paying MX$505 for two people.

We tried to come our first night on arrival to Oaxaca to eat at their rooftop, but we were unable to since we didn't have reservations. Two nights later, we got a reservation for outdoor dining on the rooftop. However, we have been having these massive nightly storms, which changed our outdoor rooftop dining to indoor dining. The ambiance was definitely different indoors as it felt crowded. The servers were kind and patient with us since our Spanish wasn't the best. Some servers did speak English. The food was prepared well. It tasted authentic and fresh. I enjoyed that our waiter prepared the salsa in front of us. My favorite was the white mole and green pescado mole. Because of the rains, they closed down their bar and we could not get cocktails, which was very disappointing. Wish we could have enjoyed the rooftop and cocktails. Recommend checking this spot out regardless.

Great ambiance, beautiful location. The sweet bread, chocolate and cafe de olla are delicious. Most of the food is spicy unless you order basics like quesadillas. Service team is professional

Out of all the higher end restaurants this was my husband and I fav! The food was simple but it had flavor and was not disappointing. I'd like to add we both ate at the market several times this week. It was really fun to pick your ingredients as they made our salsa.

We arrived in Oaxaca this morning and found this beautiful and delicious place to have breakfast. The location is picturesque and peaceful, and sat overlooking the mountains. The food was absolutely amazing and the portions are large. The hubby and I shared two dishes and it was more than enough. The service and attention to detail was second to none. We are so fortunate to have found such a gem! You will not be disappointed.

It was a beautiful morning for breakfast on the upper deck outside over looking Oaxaca. Touring with a group of chefs the owner came out and reviewed the menu and I must say Wow! The food was fabulous! The service was very good we had the Picaditas three ways, pork, Manteca, and bean and cheese. We also enjoyed the Tatelas stuffed with Costeno chili. We also had a variety of breakfast pastries all made with corn flour and they all were delicious! Main course was Enmoladas Mixtecas will-the Mole. What an incredible way to start the day !! A must go to if you are in Oaxaca

Google Maps and Yelp have their hours listed as open between 8am and 10pm, roughly. I walked 20 minutes from my Airbnb and arrived here at 12:10pm. The hostess informed me that lunch service did not start until 1:00pm, and I was welcome to wait...for about an 1 hour...for food... There were multiple tables full with customers eating...I inquired about the full tables, and she just shrugged... I walked out the front of the restaurant, where multiple other restaurants were open and gladly welcoming for service. Terrible customer service, terrible restaurant.

This is an exceptional place, founded by indigenous chef Olga Cabrera. It has a beautiful roof top, where you can see the sunset while having dinner. The food is a fantastic update of the cuisine from different Mesoaméricane traditions. The staff is very young and friendly. They are truly make it easy. Don't miss this one. The food is a total experience to taste the landscape, as it is related to by pre-Colombian culture.

Food is great, their terrace is a beautiful place and service is top of the line. We had drinks one afternoon and had breakfast the next day. We liked it so much that we booked dinner as well.

Absolutely amazing dinner. My wife and I both agreed that this was the best meal we had during our 10 days in the state of Oaxaca. The setting was a beautiful terrace, the service was outstanding, and the food was next level. A reservation was needed but it wasn't hard to get as long as we were ok eating at 8 or 9 pm.

The staff there is very accommodating and friendly. I would come here every other day for their donatelas de caramelo. 10/10 recommend their pastries. The interior is very artisanal, upstairs they have a beautiful mural.

Tierra del Sol was fantastic! We sat on the rooftop for breakfast and service was quick to start. I had the chocolate de agua and my boyfriend had the cafe de olla, both were great but I LOVED mine. Both sweet breads were so good, we went back just to the bakery the next day. The ambience was great, service was great, prices were good for the quality of food and portions were enough for us to have leftovers. Would immediately return to Tierra del Sol when visiting Oaxaca again.

We had lunch today on the third floor terrace at this place. The ambiance and view are undeniably wonderful. However, the service was the worst I have suffered in many a day. There were a multitude of staff standing around but it was fully a half an hour between an uninspiring soup and the main course. That is actually a pretty long time to be sitting waiting for a meal. During that time no staff appeared even to refill the water glasses. When we did order we were faced with the problem that items on the menu were for some reason unavailable. The food, when it did arrive was not particularly bad, but neither was it particularly good. The beef rib mole dish I had was a rather ordinary mole on a plate covering a rather dry, overcooked 6 inch rib and nothing else No rice, no beans, no veggies, not even any garnish. Rather underwhelming at, as I recall, in excess of $25 US. My drink, while quite tasty, came in a martini glass and was a remarkably stingy pour. A few thoughts on the menu. This restaurant makes a great deal of describing the food as sustainable, from select local producers and somehow vaguely pre-Columbian. Sort of a Oaxacan Chez Panisse. I have noticed this ploy in a few places. It is clearly aimed at your gringo tourists. There is nothing wrong with this approach but it does not make up for bad service and mediocre food. I left this restaurant feeling ripped off.

Rooftop eatery with exquisite presentation, delectable flavors and refined showcase of Oaxacan cuisine. Temperature checks, hand sanitizer and shoe sanitization mat on entry. There is a gorgeous bar to the left, and then a central station for freshly cooked tortillas, hot chocolate and other amazing treats. Had melilitas, chapulines (grasshoppers) that was exquisitely presented with caramelized garlic and onions. I had the lengua (tongue) with Mole Mixtecas. This mole was reminiscent of gourmet tomato based sauces from Provence or Tuscany. Complex, cohesive and harmonious chords of flavor coddled the lush and tender beef tongue. The smoky Mezcal we ordered was a bit overwhelming for my entree. I was certainly too full for dessert.

Fantastic fantastic mole. I had the mole amarillo with duck. The mole was filled with a wild variety of flavors and the duck was succulent. My partner had the white mole which had an interesting flavor almost like Chinese white pepper. The mole negro my friend got was great as well. Cocktails were delicious. Beautiful atmosphere on the roof and good service. We didn't have a reservation but might be worth getting one. Desserts were fantastic too! Chocolate cake was the best. The plantain dessert is actually banana based.

Disappointed.. Sat at a table ignored while several other parties arrived after us and ordered. I finally spoke and got menus. I have been vegetarian 30+ years and looked under the veggie menu where grasshoppers were listed as vegetarian. What in the world?? I was so grossed out. If they cant keep it straight on paper imagine in the kitchen! I told the waiter and he laughed :) The terrace was pretty nice but i could tell the kitchen wasn't super clean. They closed the door when i peeped into the non open air one.. My mom had fish and the mole was super mega spicy.

This is one of the best restaurants in Oaxaca City. I had a fantatic meal here one afternoon - sipping mezcal and trying so many expectional dishes here. I always am sure to try any soup on a Oaxaca menu - this restaurant did not disappoint. The rooftop view are incredible, the menu is excellent. I can still almost taste the exceptional grilled beets that came with my entree... Oh, I can't wait to go back here again. For visitors and tourists - the most traditional time to book a great meal is 2pm or 3pm. Oaxacans seem to enjoy a fat, liesurely lunch and then they have a smaller dinner later in the evening. Book a 3pm table here, just the mezcal flowing and start a beautiful afternoon. Great service, great views and great menu. This is one of the top spots in Oaxaca City. You will enjoy your meal here - it will be excellent and memorable! (and inexpensive, too)

Vayan a otro lugar. El lugar muy lindo pero no tienen ni un ventilador en la terraza (hace mucha falta) y el desayuno muy caro para lo que es. 350 pesos por cabeza por un desayuno muy equis. Pedí las tételas - nada del otro planeta, estaban un poco duras y secas y me querían cobrar extra por traerme queso y crema. Además el servicio bastante malo.

Great great service! The menu is awesome!!! We had the Tetelas, the frijoles soup and the mole! The cocktails are amazing I tried the Naked and Famous, delicious! My wife had the El que de amarillo se viste, sweet and very refreshing!

Relaxing rooftop restaurant with genuine Oaxaca food. Amazing drink with Tamarind, orange juice and ginger.

At first we found the menu confusing (it didn't matter how much or little Spanish we knew) but once the server came over he did an excellent job describing each dish we were interested in. The table side salsa was terrific and the food and presentation very nice. I was not impressed with the Tlayudas, but we hadn't been a fan of the one at catedral either. It turns out that both of these are more traditional folded and closed presentations and very thick with filling (taste was good but heavy). We had been expecting something like you see in a lot of the videos which honestly is more like a big tostada served open faced with lots of fresh greens on top. But the other menu items and dessert were great. And we came back for breakfast the next morning. Both times we ate up on the wonderful roof dining area. Oh, and in the morning they are making fresh tortillas on the ceramic Comal at the entrance, a delight to watch (and eat with your eggs).

Everything was delicious! The restaurant is beautifully decorated and you get a nice view from the terrace. The waiter was really attentive. My family and I enjoyed picking the ingredients to our salsa.. it was so yummy.

Beautiful setting, all around! excellent service, I am in love with this place, I had the pulpo Al pesto (grill octopuse with carrot puree) although the octopus was only, only, a bit over cooked, (I am very observand of octopus cooking, it is very challenging to get it right!!!, I will still have it again, here!!! The service, the waiter (Alejandro) was great, I am getting into the MeZcAl scene, He had amazing recommendations, They went with the food, flavor and request (I was trying to stay in one piece). If you are a beginner like me on Mezcal try: 1 Convita, 2 Arroqueño, they are very calm and sooding....

They put so much emphasis on how things are made or how different or earthy they are that you get lost in the basics of ordering and eating food. The food was too complicated for me and I probably ordered the wrong things because our waiter was trying to put on such a lengthy explanation we didn't know what to do. Maybe it was the layout of the menu that confused me. It wasn't the Mescal because I didn't get enough. The vibe is "we worked the soil, we ground the corn in a mortar and pestal, we present the creation in a once in a lifetime experience and your lucky to be here so don't pay attention to the size of the portions or the price." Had such a better experience at other places in Oaxaca city. Clearly my opinion is in the minority of other reviews. Oh one thing... the table side preparation of your own personalized salsa is really cool.

I wanted to try this place out and I accidentally walked past the female hostess. My husband told me she gave me the dirtiest look and he called me back. When we asked for a table for 2, she annoying told us that unless we planned on eating dinner, there was no availability. We had wanted to grab some drinks and have an appetizer. The place looked pretty empty so I believe she said that on purpose because she was upset that I didn't know she was the hostess. Pretty obvious. This was on Father's Day around 9pm. So the female who worked that shift was the one with the bad attitude.

This was my favorite restaurant in Oaxaca. Great food and views. Make reservations if you can. The only thing that can be improved is the service. I don't understand why we had so many waiters at our table. Most were very good, but there were a couple that were absolutely clueless and would forget things, or when asked for something would go in the opposite direction and then take forever, among other things. It would be preferred if they just had assigned us a single waiter that was responsible for everything. This would avoid different waiters asking the same question over and over again, among other things. And still, it was my favorite restaurant. The food was extra ordinary. It was very healthy. And if you have a chance, visit their sister restaurant Balthazar that is about 5 blocks away (at Jesús Carranza 113 Oax. MX) and is open only for breakfast.

We just had the most boring lunch. We are vegetarian and there were not many choices. The waiter highly recommended the blue corn waffles. They were dry and utterly tasteless. The quesadillas were equally bland. When we arrived we were told the terrace was full, so we asked how long would be the wait. After saying we had no interest in dining in the hot room next to the oven a table was suddenly available. When we went upstairs there were a number of tables available and they stayed empty throughout our lunch. What was that about? On the positive side, the cinnamon rolls we got there for breakfast were really good and the wait staff was polite and friendly - although no one spoke much English. If you can't speak Spanish then you might want to look elsewhere.

Such a lovely restaurant. Definitely fancier than most, but the view of the church is fantastic, and the food is really good. I also loved their drinks. We went for a light, late lunch and it was not only really fun, but super low pressure. They let us linger over our drinks and enjoy our time.

We visit Oaxaca amazing city. and we looked for a few restaurants. This one caught my husband eye. Most restaurant are roof top. But since we were celebrating our anniversary he wanted something nice. He called and requested a table and told them we were celebrating our anniversary. We get there and they gave us a corner table we such a nice view of the town in the evening. A full moon out what else can us ask for. The waiter that helped us. His name is Alex very helpful and very kind. He explained everything they they serve and the best dishes they had. The food was great and the service too. We even meet the chef. By the name Olga Cabrera. Great person. You need to try this restaurant I gave it a 5 stars.

We came here for lunch and very much enjoyed our meal, including salsa made tableside (we chose the ingredients but didn't know what we were doing - tasty nonetheless), Chile rellenos mixta (ground beef and pork and fruit sauce) and granaches (corn cakes with beef). The restaurant is well located, peaceful and has tasty food. Recommended.

Very nice rooftop, great food and ambiance. I visited this place 4 times during my Oaxaca stay. I had mezcal margaritas here and they were delicious. The mole is a must!

This place has a very nice rooftop and overall a very nice place. But don't let that fool you. To start off the service was horrible. Besides the time we got seated and ordered the waiter not once approached our table to see if we needed anything. They were not busy at all so that was not an excuse. I had to flag him down to ask to get my family drinks. I have a toddler, and asked for a high chair. They claimed they didn't have any, but a family had one. I assumed maybe they only had a few and would give me theirs when they were done eating but never offered it after they family was done with it, they just took it away. The food was horrible, my kids shared a waffle and could not eat it, I tasted like nothing any my kids never left a waffle behind. I had memelitas and they were ok nothing great about them. My husband ordered chilaquiles, let me tell you i have had some very bad ones in my life and by far these are the most grossest ones ever..They pour the salsa in front of you making it look nice but they tasted like straight water. They had absolutely no taste, he left them all.. We were never offered coffee or bread like the rest of the people eating. But when it was time to pay right away they asked if we wanted to add gratitude. I would not recommend this place at all.
