"Named after Mexico City’s massive seafood market, La Viga is a Redwood City favorite for oceanic fare with a Latin twist. Wedged between an industrial area and downtown, the basic but cheerful dining room draws a casual lunchtime crowd here for heaping tacos—soft white corn tortillas stuffed with fried snapper fillet, cabbage and chipotle crema; or crisp prawns with tomatillo-garlic sauce and pico de gallo. At the dinner hour, residents stream in for the famed tallarines con mariscos, a sizable mound of al dente fideos studded with pristine seafood cooked in a spicy tomato sauce. With such fresh ingredients and bold flavors, the low prices and generous portions are particularly pleasing. Don't forget to leave room for a delicate flan to finish." - Michelin Inspector

Was in town for work and met up with some friends. No of us had ever been here before - it was such a great place for us to catch up. The food is great and very affordable! Portion size was still big for tapas. Would definitely come back every time I am in town. The drinks were delicious too but forgot to take photos - the Horchata was great and not too sweet.

Google
Very tasty & tender calamari to start and delicious churro to finish. But the true gem was the seafood pasta with a spicy cream sauce! Salmon & Red Snapper tacos were also quite memorable as well. Highly recommend this place!

Sit outside and order a No Manches and the Pulpos Salteados for a truly amazing meal. Skip the platanos fritos, they're a little dry. Wonderful service too.

We ate at La Viga Seafood & Cocina Mexicana. It was nice. I thought it would be a bit fancier because I saw it recommended somewhere. The seafood dish with different kinds was really good, especially the shrimp. The tacos cost $6 each, which seemed a lot, but they tasted great. The chips were the best part—they were not greasy and very crunchy. They gave us two kinds of sauce; the green one was the best. The cold beer was also really good with the food. Even though I expected something a bit different, we liked it a lot and want to go back to try more dishes.

Service team was friendly and bar is great. Food is good 4*, empanadas were really good, bread pudding is amazing. Cocktails were really good. Spent about $60 per person, which seems pricey.

Google
Pleasantly surprised by this restaurant - it’s not the type of Mexican food that is too oily or creamy for us. Instead, this is more like a tapas place with quite some Spanish dishes. Drinks are cool as well. The location is on the edge of sketchy area; we kinda afraid someone might smash our car window… We keep coming back here for the great drink, good food and cool vibes. Highly recommended

Google
Boys wanted some Mexican food and I saw good reviews for this restaurant, so decided to try it. After 30 minutes waiting, finally we got our food, appearance is lot better than the taste. The Ceviche trio is too spicy and sour, the tortilla chips is so disappointed…overrated restaurant!

Yummy dishes but not so much on service. We came here for dinner. It has been a while since our last visit. It was not that crowded when we arrived. They also have outdoor seating. We were seated right away. For drink, we ordered sangria and Tin tan. I like tin tan but not that much on sangria. For starter, we ordered coconut shrimp and chaviche trio. Both are yummy. For the main we ordered Pulpos Salteado, Bistec con Papas and Caldo de Mariscos. They are yummy. I like the medium bistec as it is tender and the potato is yummy, but it only comes with 3 slices of steak. I expect more for $30 dish. For dessert, we got churros, and it was good. It was nice dinner with a friend, but service can be better. The server forgot one of our orders even though he clearly asked us if we wanted 3 or 2, and we said 2 is enough. The main course price is considered high, and we expect better service when you expect customers to tip 18% or higher.

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic spot in Redwood City. This is our go-to for team meals whenever folks are in town who don't have access to amazing Mexican food back home. Everything is good, but some favorites are the: Camarones Al Coco, Cochinita Pibil, Salsas y Totopos, and the Pescado Tacos. The house made chile de arbol sauce is delicious. I never remember to take pictures, but I'll have to do that the next time that I'm here!

Yelp
I came here for dinner on a Friday night. The decor and ambiance were cute. We got here early and were seated right away. The host gave us a card to scan for our menu and then literally 2 minutes after we sat down the server came and asked what we wanted to drink. We barely got a chance to take our jackets off! After he came around the next time we ordered a spicy margarita and a hibiscus margarita. Both were delicious. We order the ceviche trio, which was also good. However, the waiter was relentless in coming by and trying to hurry us up to order, to the point where it was very uncomfortable. After our meal, we were almost finished with our drinks and he asked us to move tables so that he could use our table to accommodate a large party. There was plenty of room on the side and he could have grabbed a different table and scooted us over, which we eventually agreed upon after 5 minutes of discussion. Completely rude! Honestly, the food is good but because of the service and how uncomfortable the server made us feel the entire time during our dinner, I would never return to this restaurant.

Yelp
3.5 stars rounded up. December 2023: Service was pretty bad- cold welcome and didn't seem like they wanted to seat us (3 people) without a reservation even though their website says reservation needed for 10+ people and there were 2 tables for 4 open. Took a long time to get our bill even though by the time we were done eating, most of the patrons left and it was only my party and another table. The food was good although the portion for the angel hair seafood pasta dish was small for $30. I had the fish taco (one for $6), which was lightly battered and had a mayonnaise based sauce. I thought it was really good but not great or amazing. Their chips and salsa ($6) came with 3 different salsas which were all fantastic.

Yelp
Pro: Cool decor, good music, mix fare of Mexicana and Spanish food Con: Parking hell, quick services. Came here with local bay area friends, overall a pleasant meal, good shrimp dishes, steak and oyster was subpar. Bisteck Salteado - steak could use more garlic Oysters - tiny little things Camarones al Coco - fried perfectly, sauce wasn't that spicy Doraldo a la Brazas - good simple fish dish Enchilada Plate with shrimp - overcooked shrimp, tons of food Arroz con Mariscos - outstanding saffron rice with clams Plato Vegetariano with chicken - nothing special Michelada - needs more tajin and chamoy Ceviche Trio - much better after we asked for a ton much limes Guac and totopos with all salsas - actually pretty good. Not bad.

Yelp
I noticed they use different tortilla now, not the homemade style but the street taco-style corn tortillas that you can get at the grocery stores. Although I still like the fresh ingredients, the tortilla made it extra special. What a bummer! I wonder if they go gluten-free now with the corn tortilla. If yes, I wish they give us options.

Yelp
Tacos for lunch. I ordered 1 shrimp, 2 carne asada tacos. The service was efficient and the food came in timely manner and came beautifully served. The shrimp taco was crispy and delicious and somehow I couldn't bring myself to eat the carne asada so I don't know the taste yet. We also ordered guacamole and chips. The guacamole is normal but the spicy salsa came with chips was deliciously spicy. The ambiance is casual and clean. The parking is a challenge since you have to park around the neighborhood, but it's worth the hassle. The price for taco 1-$6, 2-$11, and 3-$15. The guaca $11.

Yelp
The service was very fast and he was very attentive. I really appreciated that the wait staff was always ready for our next steps and was super attentive to our needs. The ambiance was super cute and I love the decorations. I really loved the Tin Tan, it was super yummy and strong. I loved the mezcal taste, I was pretty buzzed after. The ceviche trio was super flavorful and fresh!!
google avatar

Yelp
It's definitely not worth the price they are charging for. The presentation is impeccable if you're the type of person to eat with your eyes. Everything lacked salt. The mango agua fresca, I am almost positive that it tasted like a watered down mango juice from Costco... the ceviche trio was $19? Picture for reference, it's a sauce bowl very tiny & everything was falling off. The bistec was the reason why I gave 3 stars and the service/decor. I think if you are going to charge up at least season your food better

Yelp
La Viga Seafood & Cocina Mexicana is hands down the most underrated restaurant in the Bay Area! This place is an absolute gem when it comes to delicious and flavorful food. My boyfriend and I had an incredible dining experience here. Empanadas de Champiñones Tapas - The empanadas were bursting with flavor and had a perfect balance of ingredients. They were not heavy at all and tasted light, making them a fantastic appetizer to kick off our meal. Camarones a la Diabla - This was the true standout of our visit. The shrimp was cooked to perfection, tender and juicy with just the right amount of spice. But what truly took this dish to the next level was the rice with mixed vegetables. The corn in the rice was incredibly sweet and burst in my mouth with every bite. It was almost comparable to Chipotle, but even more elevated and flavorful. Trust me, words don't do this dish justice. It is hands down one of my top three favorite dishes in the Bay Area. If you're in the Bay Area and haven't tried La Viga Seafood & Cocina Mexicana yet, you're truly missing out on a fantastic dining experience. The food is outstanding and the overall experience is one that will leave you wanting to come back for more.

Yelp
I just found the perfect local taco spot! I've been craving tacos lately, and this place popped up with amazing reviews, so I decided to check it out with some friends today. Wow--these tacos are incredible! They even make their tortillas from scratch, and everything tastes so fresh. The portions are super generous too. I'll definitely be back to try more tacos!

Yelp
This hidden gem in Redwood City is a fantastic place to visit, whether for groups, date nights, or dinner with friends and family. The service is excellent, and attentive staff provides accurate information. I tried the Ensalada de Otoño, tacos with a side of guacamole, and churros. It was so delicious that I forgot to take pictures! If you're craving healthy and outstanding food, this spot is definitely worth a visit.

Yelp
I was attracted by its seafood noodles at first but im impressed by its taco and chips. The salmon taco is very good. Its a perfect combination of everything. Its very satisfying eating a big bite of the salmon. Also, I love their chips since they are fresh made. The trio chips dipping is ok but i love their mango topping. Its such a fun way to eat with the chips. The spicy seafood noodles is standard. I would totally come again for its appetizers.

Yelp
It was street parking. We made reservations for here and got seated pretty quickly. I got the tacos, calamari and ceviche. They had a pretty wild variety of the flavors which was great. Food was pretty good, the tacos were a decent size and had lots of meat. The calamari and ceviche were decent size too. Overall great food. One thing was we ordered churros but they never came out and we already got the bill. They were able to take it out so that's good but we didn't get to try the churro out. So probably next time.

Yelp
This restaurant is truly a hidden gem! The food is exceptional--delicious and beautifully presented. The staff were incredibly warm and welcoming, making the experience even more enjoyable. The ambiance is perfectly curated, creating a comfortable and fitting atmosphere.

Yelp
Stepped in for a quick lunch with a friend, little did I know I would be eating one of the best taco in the bay area. Honestly the food tasted really good. Vibe and service were good as well, they quickly got the order.

Yelp
I haven't been to La Viga for years and the food did not change at all! Everything was pretty authentic and delicious. We enjoyed a bunch of items sharing with one another. They were all good. Drinks were ok. Not enough tequila in drinks and too little salt on the rim. Outdoor seating deteriorated from covid, nevertheless adequate. Total is $50/person. Will return when in the hood!
google avatar

Yelp
After a nice hike through the redwoods we stopped by here for lunch. The sun was out so we decided to sit outside. At around 1pm on a Saturday the restaurant was pretty busy. We got the trio ceviche to share and all of them were fresh and delicious. I opted for the grilled fish taco and my friend got the salmon taco.

Yelp
I've been here several time. The service is timely. The atmosphere is very friendly - the music is upbeat, but not overbearing (beautiful Spanish balladsL. There are cute little candles at each table. There is indoor and outdoor seating. The food tastes FRESH and very flavorful - you can tell that everything is from scratch. I'm a big fan of their micheladas and cocktails, too.

Yelp
The service and atmosphere were great - upscale casual mexican restaurant. My favourite dish was certainly the ceviche with very on point tortilla chips. The flavours and textures of each seafood was done very well; with a subtle heat that sneaks up on you after a while. The tacos were good, but didn't blow me away. The shrimp I would have liked cooked a bit less and with a crispier batter, the carne asada had great flavour but was on the chewier side and the fish I want to say reminded me of a fish filet (granted fish filet is my go to order at McDonalds because it's delicious), but speaks to reason that the seasoning and breading was done well but nothing special. Maybe the other ingredients in the taco could have popped more - its tough to say. The corn tortillas I really liked though - they were tasty and the perfect level of durability to contain all of the contents of the taco. All in all a tasty spot, it's no San Diego taqueria but a solid 4 stars in my opinion.

Yelp
Excellent seafood : try also their vegetarian tacos: delish! Great friendly service.. Tip: Park a block away if none is available on broadway..

Yelp
Came for a Sunday lunch, menu included a special and mimosas for brunch. The place is very cute- staff friendly. You have the option of indoor or outdoor dining. Menu has quite a bit of seafood options, which is why it was picked initially. If plates were given the option of meat, it usually included the option of shrimp or seafood (mixed). Friend and I ordered several items. First up, chips and salsa. Came with two salsa sauces- both nice. I ordered the enchiladas and made it a steak one (realized I've never had enchiladas that way- usually only chicken or veggies). It was delicious, a perfect size of 2 rolls and a small portion of beans and rice. The chips went well with it. Friend had the Tallarines con Mariscos (seafood linguine) dish. She said it was delish, as well. We also split two desserts- the chocoflan and churros- both well made. Will definitely come back if I'm in the area again!

Yelp
This place was good, but I do think that everything was kind of overpriced (around $45 per person) I really enjoyed the guacamole and chips appetizer as well as the calamari, but I do think that the ceviche trio was not worth it, the fish was not as fresh as expected. The mocktail here was really really good. The tacos were just alright. The service was a little bit slow because they didn't have that many waiters, and the environment itself is a little on the smaller side. Also thought it was a bit weird when we paid there were only three options for tipping on the machine which was 20%- 30%, you had to adjust the tipping yourself if you wanted to pay a less percentage.
google avatar

Aaron Z.

Yelp
We enjoyed this restaurant on a quiet Sunday afternoon, sitting outdoors. Mixed ceviches were all unique and tasted fresh. The fish tacos I felt were on the small side and not fully dressed, so if you're hungry, I would recommend two. There were lots of other menu options, non fish, as well. The mixed drinks were well-made and we were well attended by our server.
google avatar

Yelp
Food was delicious! The service was great. We were promptly greeted and seated. We reserved seats ahead of time as we had 7 in our party. We scanned a QR code for the menu. I am still on the fence about menu vs QR code. The selection was great and the food did not disappoint.

Yelp
OK - so we haven't been here since prior to Covid but have been thinking about this place and since we were in the area we decided to stop by for dinner. First off - they've totally remodeled. Looks so nice - has more seating inside and now offers outdoor seating. Looks so nice and was very comfortable. We were so fortunate that we were there early, a Wed evening before 6pm as we were able to get a table without reservations. Service was AMAZING. Water glass always full. Plates removed once we finished a particular plate. Server was friendly and asked if we were okay with the order that everything was coming in. So let's start with our food: Started our meal with their Camerones Al Coco - which is their crispy coconut crusted prawns with the most delicious achiote orange and mango habanero and sweet habanero orange cream sauces. The prawns were HUGE and the crispy coconut crust was perfectly crunchy with lots of shredded coconuts. Loved it! Highly recommend! Was perfect as we were able to get two prawns each! LOL... We then got Pancita (roasted pork belly) tacos - OMG - SO GOOD... that blue corn tortilla with that delicious tender flavorful roasted pork belly all accompanied with the fresh crunchy cabbage and pico de gallo. Had a bit of a bite with the chile de arbol sauce - was AMAZING. I was so tempted to order more tacos but we had a main course we had ordered so patience. But I figured if we were still hungry we definitely would order more tacos!! Our main course that we shared was their Dorado a las Brazas - which is their grilled mahi-mahi served with the most DELICIOUS plantain and brussels sprouts rice, topped with some slices of oranges, habanero pickled onions and their delicious achiote orange sauce (that was also used on the prawn appetizer). MY Oh MY! The combination of everything, the perfectly grilled and delicious mahi mahi with the creaminess of the rice with big chunks of plantains - and the bits of brussels sprouts - with the acidity of the pickled onions and that sauce!! FLAVOR bomb with tons of texture... SO GOOD!! They brought back the memories and kept the flavors and textures I remember from when we last came - so consistency was great!! And of course we ended our meal with their Churros. Great way to end the meal!! If my stomach wasn't so full I would have loved to get their Chocoflan so I guess we just have to plan on going back!! :) HIGHLY recommend and can't wait to go back!

Yelp
very mid **do NOT get the oysters** super expensive, I think $40 per dozen and they were not great quality Came during cinco de mayo and it was surprisingly that not that busy. My cocktail was also filled all the way up with ice... The food is OK, they're known for their seafood so we got the mango ceviche. Pretty good, lots of mangos, but chunks of fish are pretty big. Empanadas had too much dough I feel. Out of everything, the enchiladas were the best. The tomato sauce with the chips & salsa was really good and different! Small place but cute mexican design. Only one bathroom though and it was really strange -- had to go through part of their working area/ bar. Service was also a miss, didn't get checked on much nor water refills. But they did supply a super cute and large water bowl for the dogs.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I made reservations on a Friday night because they are usually busy. The food was amazing. The service was great. Our server was very attentive. the ambience in there is amazing as well. The murals on the wall are gorgeous. I will definitely be back for some more!

Yelp
Ordered delivery and was impressed by the fresh flavors. The esquites was the highlight of the meal. Added steak to the enchiladas and it was tender and tasty with the tortillas and enchilada sauce. The aguachile camaron had a lot of filler, but the shrimp was nice and spicy.

Yelp
This spot has been on my radar for a while due to the amazing reviews. Walked in around 8:50pm on a Saturday and my party of 2 was seated right away. There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating and it was very crowded. We ordered the calamari, coconut shrimp, horchata, pescado tacos, salmon tacos, and carne asada taco. The horchata was unlike any horchata I've had in the past (unfortunately not in a good way). It was extremely watered down and it tasted like 90% water with hints of coconut? I've had horchata countless times in the past and I even asked the waitress if it was the correct drink because it was unbelievably watered down and bland and I was confused as to why it had coconut flavor. They said it was the correct drink. I think maybe it was towards the end of the night so it was the last of it? Who knows. Calamari and coconut shrimp were great. I especially loved the sauces that came with the crispy coconut shrimp. Out of the 3 tacos, my ranking with best starting first was: 1) pescado 2) salmon 3) carne asada. The pescado was so flavorful and juicy! I've heard great things about the salmon taco here but it was a bit dry the night we came and it was overpowered by the heavy creaminess of the avocado and cream on top so I barely tasted it. Food came quickly and servers checked in frequently. Overall it was a good experience with lively energy in the restaurant but probably a one-time experience for me.

Yelp
5-star update! This time, I came with my wife and we chowed on their Tacos: Pescado, shrimp, and pork belly. Each taco had a different flavor which was awesome. The handmade tortillas make a huge difference and really shows the true quality out of the taco. We also had their seafood pasta which had different seafood bites from octopus, squid, clams and even mussles. This was delish and a staple item for La Viga. For dessert, we tried their flan which had toasted pecans and this raspberry syrup and raspberries. This dessert was refreshing and paired great after a hardy meal. It's light and isn't too sweet. We will definitely come back again for more!

Yelp
The best Mexican restaurant in the area. The food is tasty and fresh and the cocktails are very good! Totopos and guac were very good. Tacos good. Enchiladas tasty. We came in around 5pm on a Friday. Services was slooow. They weren't that busy but I guess slowly ramping up. Food came out promptly though and all was fine. Good place, good atmosphere. Parking is mostly street parking. We will be back!

Yelp
I rarely come out to this side of the Peninsula... so when our friend recommended this spot for a quick bite, I was thrilled to try it! The place was busy with a lively ambience. Service was friendly, but could've been more attentive as we had to flag our waiter down multiple times. We also had to wait a bit for our table, even though we had reservations. Nonetheless, the food and drinks were spectacular. We got chips, guac, and salsa to share. I opted for the pescado (fish) and camaron (shrimp) tacos - the food tasted freshly made & had amazing flavor. The fish taco was one of the best I had, wish I had ordered more! The batter was crisp, yet light. It was seasoned really well & paired nicely with the slaw. This with sips of my michelada = heaven! We also ordered the churros for our dessert, which came with a chocolate sauce. These were so tasty. But they can be extremely hot when biting into them so take caution. I would definitely come back. Highly recommend making reservations as it can be busy.

Yelp
I caught up with an old friend in the Bay recently and I mentioned I wanted to grab some Mexican food. I mean it's California, you have to grab Mexican! On our journey, we stopped by La Viga in Redwood City, a small, unassuming spot not too far from the city center. Anyways! This Latin eatery is named after Mexico's famous seafood market and is serving up seafood dishes and comfort eats. The ambience is casual and I loved the interior with lots of natural light, perfect for family and friends. 1. Ceviche Trio with lime shrimp, red snapper, and mango & fish (5/5) 2. Camarones Al Coco: coconut crusted prawn (4/5) 3. Calamar Fritos: fried calamari with serrano lime vinaigrette (4/5) 4. Enchiladas (4/5) 5. Cochinata Taco: Yucatán style braised pork with chile de arbol sauce (5/5) 6. Pescado Taco: red snapper with chipotle cream sauce (5/5) The ceviche trio is the perfect appetizer to share for the summer! The shrimp and fish are all super fresh and the acidity is refreshing and brightens up the dish. While the prawns are cooked well, I thought the coconut was a tad too sweet. The orange habanero sauce was delicious though! My favorite were the tacos! The Yucatán style braised pork was pull apart tender and the chile de arbol sauce helps to cut thru the fat. The fried red snapper holds up really well despite the generous serving of chipotle cream sauce. If you're in the area, definitely stop by here! The prices were more than fair in my opinion and all the ingredients were super fresh. So grab a friend or two and share a bunch of plates! Yelp
The wifey and I were craving some delicious seafood. We have frequented La Viga a few times, and have always had a wonderful experience. Food is always fresh and delicious. The cocktails are pleasantly fabulous. This is a must try if you live on the peninsula!

Yelp
The food was amazing! Highlight for us was the ceviche......the shrimp ceviche was the one we kept talking about!!!!! It was great homemade tortillas for the tacos! There were options for glutenfree & dairy free needs, which is rare for Mexican food! The drink with hibiscus, grapefruit, mint & ginger beer was deliciously refreshing....not too sweet! Service was great & reservations are recommended! Parking was not easy!

Yelp
Such delicious food! Seafood cooked in a marvelous Mexican way. The main course was fantastic. Also the appetizers. Service was friendly and helpful. They did not rush us even though we sat for quite a while. (We did leave a larger than normal tip, as we should have.) Ambiance is festive and fun. Music playing was just a tad louder than I would have preferred, but not too loud to have a good conversation. Parking was on the street nearby. No problem. I would gladly come here again when I'm in the Bay Area. I took a friend for his birthday and it was a grand time.

Yelp
La Viga is an off the main path gem. Their drinks are creative and delicious, and their menu really cultivates a shared feast environment. Between 3 of us we ordered 4 ceviche/tapas plates and that was the perfect amount of food. We didn't anticipate having dessert but their butternut squash flan had us intrigued enough to order and it was the perfect sweet treat after a delicious meal.

Yelp
Food was delicious - cool ambience with beautiful murals .... Went for a lunch in Saturday but would be fun spot for happy hour or dinner or drinks.

Yelp
Went here for lunch with coworkers and we all loved it. The ceviche trio was fresh, flavorful, and filling. Excellent guacamole with freshly fried chips. Salsa trio also nice. Friendly service and casual, comfortable ambiance. I'd gladly return.

Yelp
One of my favorite places: the service, not very good . Everytime I eat there, is ridiculous customer service. Even yea The customer god eventually.

Yelp
This place is consistently great! They have a full bar and a great menu! It's a pretty small place with cool art on the walls, and they do have a few tables outside. Great place for drinks and apps or a full meal. My favorites are their ceviche options, tacos, seafood plates.

Yelp
La Viga is a small, intimate Mexican restaurant with lots to offer ! We made a reservation which I recommend because space is limited inside. The menu has plenty to offer and we went with the tacos, enchiladas, guac, and churros. Everything was delicious - also down to the drinks. I love a good sangria and it was perfect. The service was also impeccable, the servers were also available and efficient. I wait to visit again!
