"When a cast-iron platter of fiery queso flameado is flambeed and cocooned into corn or flour tortillas tableside, you know you’re not at just any Tex-Mex spot. You’re at Las Palmas—the Tex-Mex spot. This Uptown restaurant, with a sun-soaked patio and movie theater-dark dining room, has an opulent touch: lobster tostadas, Akaushi wagyu fajitas with housemade tortillas, and the aforementioned plate of cheese they light on fire for you. There’s no shortage of solid Tex-Mex restaurants in Dallas, but Las Palmas’s fancier-than-usual menu rarely disappoints. "It’s not fancy, but when you need a bite to clear out the Mezcal wonders that can be tasted at this Deep Ellum spot, the menu has you covered. Try any of the tortas (the lingua is sublime), the pork belly chicharron, and the melty choriqueso. In addition to solid Mexican food served with a stunning view of the Art Deco facade of Fair Park’s main entrance, this is one of the country’s best mezcalerias. Instead of mass-produced liquors and celebrity brands, they stock small-batch mezcals, tequilas, and other Mexican spirits, like bacanora and raicilla. Good for them, and good for you—becauase that means flights you won’t find at other bars, including pechuga mezcals (distilled with raw poultry), or uncertified spirits that don’t fall into any recognizable category. If you’d rather have cocktails, let the liquor shine in a classic margarita or paloma. When you get hungry, order a couple carne asada tacos and a bowl of just-spicy-enough pozole rojo." - kevin gray
