"Brunch might not be the first meal you think of when someone says “let’s get pasta,” but at Lavagna, it should be. Every weekend, the Capitol Hill spot is packed with locals indulging in mascarpone pancakes topped with whipped nutella that taste like they should be dessert instead of breakfast. The staff carries huge plates of bacon-topped spaghetti carbonara past black-and-white photos of James Dean and Audrey Hepburn, but are never too busy to stop and laugh with customers they haven’t seen in a while. Come Saturday, for more of a typical DC brunch scene, or take it slow on Sunday with the quietly sip mimosas crowd." - omnia saed

"With its charming red brick facade and wood-paneled bar, this Barracks Row restaurant has the feel of a quaint neighborhood spot in a small Italian town. Lavagna sources many ingredients from local and regional farmers to bring its contemporary Italian menu to life. All pastas are homemade, including favorites like the pappardelle lamb, risotto shrimp, and spaghetti bolognese." - Tierney Plumb, Mekita Rivas

POV: You found a scratch kitchen Italian restaurant in DC Serving delicious authentic Italian cuisine. Follow me on IG (@buciie_m) for full video reviews. Everything that came out was absolutely flavorful and cooked to perfection. I was so impressed to learn that the menu items are made fresh daily. I love Italian food and I must say this truly hit the spot. They have a good selection of items on their small menu but trust me you will have a hard time deciding because everything sounds really good! P.s you get unlimited house made bread while dining too which is really fluffy and good! We had 3 baskets of it. What we had: Appetizers: Calamari Fritto : Amish Stoneground Cornmeal | Creamy Marinara - Their Calamari was so fresh and I loved that it was coated in cornmeal, it gave it a really lovely texture. Mussels in Lemon Burre Blanc - My husband thoroughly enjoyed these and finished them super quickly. You can also choose between the Lemon Burre Blanc or a Marinara Sauce for the mussels. Entrees: Risotto Shrimp: Shrimp | Seasonal Veg | Mushrooms | Red Peppers |Old Bay Seasoning | Cream - The flavor profile of this risotto was phenomenal, it was seasoned to perfection and the shrimp was cooked beautifully. Rigatoni Italian Sausage: Red Pepper | Mozzarella | Shallots | Spicy Marinara - This was 10/10, it is the best Italian Sausage pasta I have had! I love that it was paired with cheese and that the pasta too was made from scratch Dessert: Housemade Tiramisu It was very light, fluffy and delicious. I wish my husband and I got our own instead of sharing lol. The service in the restaurant was also lovely, all the food came out pretty quickly for food that was made from scratch. This restaurant is perfect for a girls lunch, date night and also for a family dinner. They are open for dinner Wednesday - Sunday and are open for Lunch on Saturday & Sunday from 11 - 3pm

We are visiting Washington DC. We went to Lavagna for dinner. Italian!!! Amazing fresh delicious Italian cuisine! Lovely old historic building for this restaurant. Great service!! They were wonderfully attentive all evening. We tried 4 different entrees & 3 salads. Each one was amazing!! We thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Go visit as soon as you can. Delicious!!!

We had an Italian brunch/lunch on Saturday. The outdoor seats were limited and mostly taken, so we decided to sit indoor by the window. I ordered the goat cheese omelette, which was rich in flavor and had a great portion. The ice coffee was decent. My friend ordered Italian sausage gravy, and the taste was a bit plain for us but I think it's just how Italian likes to eat, and it fitted well with the provided ketchup or hot sauce. Overall, the food and service were all good, and I deem the price were fair for what we were offered.

This is the place I always demand my friends and family go to. The pasta is incredible, the service is amazing, do yourself a favor and being a big appetite! Portions are favorable, too.

Unfortunately we may have just gone on an off night, but my wife and I did not enjoy our meals tonight. I got the bison short rib and my wife got the lamb ragu and the food just didn’t taste fresh, and the flavors weren’t there. It was as if our meals got a quick microwave and then served to us. We were excited to go because of the great reviews, but the meal itself wasn’t to the standard we were expecting. The ambiance in the place was nice overall, but we won’t be going back.

New York has a lot of excellent Italian restaurants, but this one, while offering a nice experience and quality food was unexceptional.

The place was almost empty at 12:30 on a Sunday. The seat covers were filthy. The tables and bench seats were filthy! The mascarpone pancakes were dry and flavorless - no trace of mascarpone. My company ordered eggs and specified how it should be cooked. Simple instructions and had to take the eggs back to the kitchen. Wow. This survey is asking me whether I dined in for breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner. The only meal that is being served is brunch.

My fiancé and I went to Lavagna for Date night located in SE DC. It’s been on my list to try for a while. The host staff was very friendly when seating us and taking our order. We tried the Bruschetta and Apple Salad for our starter before getting into the entrees. The Apple Salad was my favorite dish. I tried the Rigatoni Italian Sausage and she had the Carbonara. The food was good but it was missing that X factor. I really liked the old school 80s style theme they have. We enjoyed ourselves there.

Yelp
The food was delicious, we had mussels, pasta bolognese and rigatoni with Italian sausage. Our waiter was a delight, he was attentive, kind and happy to help with any of our questions. The gentleman who handles the front hosting area seemed to prioritize filling the back room that is all brick, as 3 of the 4 tables were seated before seating the rest of the inside dining. When we left there were 3 of us seated in that small, back brick area and only 2 tables seated in the main dining area. While that room is cute-looking, it is not a comfortable space when the tables around you are filled. Also the music from the front of the restaurant does not carry to that back space, so it's very easy to hear your neighbors entire conversation. All to say, ambience could be improved easily and greatly by spacing the seating of tables and getting some subtle background music towards the back of the dining area.

Yelp
This review is for their brunch. In a world of overpriced mimosas, Lavagna sets itself apart by having 19 dollar bottomless mimosas. And these are not just champagne and orange juice..they also have triple sec and are massive! Food is decent-tried some crispy chicken and waffles and a delicious prosciutto stuffed omelette. And the prices are pretty good! Service was good and for brunch it wasn't crazy busy. The brunch is for sure a star. I'm already planning my next return for some drinks :)

Yelp
They were so nice to give us their semi-private space for a holiday brunch with no minimums and they separated our checks. They also gave us space and let us make ornaments and talk for 3 hours with little to no interruptions. I highly recommend them for a group event. However, my drinks were really the only highlight beyond the service. The food was so mediocre. I was surprised given the price point. The Spaghetti Carbonara I had was bland even with all the Parmesan cheese. I added lots of salt and it still didn't taste that great. I'd patronize them again but stick to a classic breakfast or something hard to mess up.

Rodger S.

Yelp
Lavagna continues to be one of our very favorite restaurants. We learned a couple things, though, on our most recent visit. On the positive side, their pasta dishes are excellent. My favorite is still the spaghetti Bolognese, & my husband's favorite is the lamb. We weren't thrilled with the appetizers we tried. The fried calamari was dull. & the mussels were the tiniest we've ever seen. I also decided to try the lamb chops. They were OK but not great. Not very meaty & prepared medium even though I asked for medium rare.

Yelp
Great food, service and ambiance! I was only visiting DC but was pleasantly surprised by how cute this place was! Great spot for lovers, friends, dates, or even a "tinder" meet up Lol I ordered a shrimp risotto dish and it was delicious! I tried all my other coworkers foods and their foods were also very good!

Amber G.

Yelp
This is a really cute restaurant. The food is good and it a great location for a girls night.

Yelp
Popular Italian place on Barracks Row is solid Italian fare and great service. The space on the Friday we visited was extremely noisy with several large Bachelorette parties occupying about half the dining space ( with lots of vino flowing). None the less, the pasta, fish and chicken dishes were very good. Nice red sauces, homemade pastas and ample tasty bread, olive oil and balsamic. Great wait staff were helpful and attentive.

Yelp
We decided to go out to eat on Mother's Day at the last minute! You can imagine my surprise when this place actually had reservations available. With the positive reviews, we decided to give it a try. Atmosphere - In a word, gorgeous! I loved the exposed brick and the maps of Italy. Having been to Italy, it did remind of some of the places I ate there. Customer Service - This is where I had to take off the first star. When we came in the restaurant, no one was at the host stand. Then I noticed a couple of people noticed us, but they just kept doing what they were doing. Apparently, they were switching from brunch to dinner, which is fine. I appreciate the level of effort it takes to transition a restaurant between services, but an acknowledgement of our presence would've been appreciated. However, once finally sat, the customer service did improve. Food - Another star removed for this one as well. We received our bread, which was cold and very dry. I ordered the risotto, which I always get excited about because it's one of my favorite dishes. It was bland. I couldn't taste any garlic or cheese. Finally, when we asked for some parmesan to go with our oil for the bread, they said they were out. Huh? An Italian restaurant that runs out of parmesan cheese?! Well, I guess that explains the bland risotto, but what did you use to make it? Maybe there were supply chain issues. :) Overall, my personal experience doesn't warrant a return or a recommendation. Perhaps I caught them on a bad day.

Yelp
This was such a lucky find! We just happened to be looking for a gluten free (gf) dinner spot for our last night of vacation. It was a quick lyft from Navy Yard and SO worth it! We were greeted by an extremely friendly man (we assumed the owner/manager), who sat us right away. We sat outside and got to enjoy the beautiful weather and felt so comfortable here. You could tell that this was a cozy and nice place just by looking around. Another couple was sitting outside with their husky - he even got his own bowl of water! The restaurant is so caring that not only do they have water for dogs that walk by, but they also have a bowl of biscuits for any lucky dogs that stop! Our server, Kelvin, was so polite and attentive. It was at the end of the night, but he made sure to give us plenty of space and time to relax and enjoy our dinner. He gave a great suggestion of a wine to pair with my dinner and even let me taste it before committing to a glass. He was a most gracious server and we really enjoyed having him wait on us! Our menu: Fresh mussels with a lemon beurre blanc (gf) Lobster bisque Provolone salad (gf, v) Shrimp risotto (gf) Radiatore primavera (v) Rigatoni Italian Sausage (with gf pasta!) Tiramisu This was such an amazing dinner! The restaurant sources all of its food from local farms (VA, NY, PA) and you can tell that the food is all so fresh. The pasta is all housemade and serving sizes are huge! When we're back in DC, we will definitely be coming back! Hopefully Kelvin will be around also - muchísimas gracias Kelvin!

Yelp
Wow. I'm so glad my friend and I ventured to Capitol Hill area to try the Italian food at Lavagna. The service was attentive and phenomenal and the food we got was very much worth the price. Note, if you come in on Wednesday or Sundays, it's 1/2 off wine bottles. My friend got a bottle of wine to enjoy with our dinner and was able to take the rest home. The complimentary bread that they gave us was dense, yet so soft and delicious. The top was seasoned simply with salt, pepper, and rosemary (? it was definitely some sort of herb) and went well the olive oil that came on the side. I don't usually eat a carb heavy diet, but I easily downed 4 pieces of bread while waiting for our food (my friend and I decided to family style two entrees). Our server also gave us refills when he saw that we finished eating our bread. RIGATONI ITALIAN SAUSAGE - 20 The rigatoni pasta was perfectly chewy. We didn't think the marinara was spicy but it was seasoned well and elevated the dish well. I would prefer a thicker sauce as it didn't really stick to the rigatoni well. was I love the pieces of mozzarella throughout the pasta which were fresh. The Italian sausage was also very tasty. Overall, my friend and I really enjoyed this pasta dish and would definitely recommend it. BELL & EVANS CHICKEN - 27 This was a much different flair and flavor compared to the above. This dish also tasted phenomenal! The skin on the chicken were so crispy - the slight crunch after biting into it was immensely satisfying. The white chicken meat was a bit dry so definitely eat it with the polenta, which was super good. It's definitely one of the best polentas I've ever had - it was a good middle ground of creamy and grainy. The polenta was definitely the highlight of this entree. I also enjoyed the brussel sprouts (smallest ones we've ever seen) which was stir-fried (?) with bacon and cranberries - giving it a nice, fatty flavor that was a bit sweet. We definitely recommend this entree - it is heavy but tasty nonetheless. Good alternative if you aren't feeling pasta. HOUSEMADE TIRAMISU - 7 Not too sweet, super delicious. The cake part wasn't too dense and the flavors were light. Very tasty dessert to finish off our meal well. We had a good amount of food leftover so we were able to make another meal out of what we ordered. Plus, when we asked them for a box to pack up the two slices of bread that we still had, they ended up giving us an additional container of bread (5-6 PHAT pieces). My friend and I had a very enjoyable and very satisfactory experience at Lavagna. The food we ordered for the price was reasonable and the service was top-notched.

Joe P.

Yelp
Utmost, and consistent with almost everyone who walks through Lavangna's doors--is that you are taken care of: Lavangna's service is top-notch. As for Lavagna's cuisine, I admit I'm a little biased - I love pasta, cheeses, and covering all of it with butter. That said, their pesto on in-house made pasta was great, as was their shrimp appetizer on kale. On a Saturday night, it was full but pleasantly--and therapeutically--chill.

katherine t.

Yelp
I'm personally not a huge pasta girl, but wow, this adorable little spot in cap hill was an amazing experience. I got good vibes when I gave the restaurant a call to make a reservation, whoever answered the phone was super nice and friendly. When we arrived, we instantly got seated. The service was some of the most prompt and friendliest I have ever experienced. I'm someone that usually has a lot of questions and our waiter offered some great recommendations. As for the food itself, my boyfriend got the lamb pappardelle - he loved it and slurped up every last noodle. The waiter suggested the special of the day for me - a shrimp scampi/linguini with sun dried tomatoes and kale. It was soooo good - they should definitely add it to their usual rotation. I loved that the sauce wasn't super heavy, but still packed with flavor. And the shrimp were perfectly cooked. I also got a glass of Riesling, which I wasn't overly impressed with, so I'll try one of their cocktails next time. The chicken dish (which I did not order, but the table next to us did) looked delicious, and those folks were raving about their food too. Super excited to have discovered this cute spot, will definitely be back!

Doug B.

Yelp
First review after a couple of visits. Always a good meal, great service, good decor, and great location in Barracks Row. With lots of Italian choices this is a solid one. Tried the Apple Salad and the Gazpacho. I really enjoyed both. The salad had lots of great ingredients. Loved the crunch of the apple and the sweetness of dried raisins. Of course, blue cheese on salad, for me, is a great combo. For dinner had the Italian sausage with red sauce on spaghetti noodles. It was so good. I enjoyed the mozzarella dropped in. All good flavors. Give them a try if you find yourself in Barracks Row wanting Italian.

Landon R.

Yelp
the food was incredible. It was the best Italian iv ever ate. Definitely going back next time I come to DC. The Ravioli was amazing.

Jessica L.

Yelp
We ordered takeout so I can't speak to the ambiance or the service, only the food. Unfortunately the food was mostly a miss for me. We had a big group so we tried several different pastas and got a couple of apps. The bruschetta was the saddest thing I've maybe ever seen. It was 3 little pieces of bread with a few tomatoes on top, and not much else. The pastas were also a bit lackluster. I had the pesto pasta and it was DROWNING in pesto. I almost couldn't eat it because there was so much pesto. I would say it was just a heavy handed prep, but nope. My friend also got the pesto pasta and hers was also drowning in sauce. I like saucy pasta as much as the next gal, but this was too much. I got it with shrimp and they were well cooked at least. My husband got the rigatoni with Italian sausage and it was ok. Decent flavor, but didn't feel like anything I couldn't have made at home, and it was weirdly dry. We also tried the spaghettis bolognese which was decent. Our dinner was also quite expensive. Given the large number of Italian restaurants in the area I don't think I'd order from Lavagna or go here again. Pretty disappointing food experience.

Nananami L.

Yelp
Spaghetti carbonara. Like this delicious pasta. Bacon is well integrated into it. Psychological is great satisfaction. This is very delicious. Give a good evaluation and comment. LOBSTER BISQUE. The delicious and delicious lobster soup tastes a strong taste. But the nutritional value is also quite good, and the food gives a lot.

Madison S.

Yelp
3.5/5 stars. A nice little italian spot tucked into the eastern market neighborhood, its easy to want to skip this spot for the more flashy restaurants, however I had an amazing time here with great service and with good food. Is it the best italian DC has to offer? No, but it's solid! I appreciated how well we were treated there and the prices are good.

Dee C.

Yelp
Pasta was umm umm good! My lady was happy with the meatless options. The calamari was very fresh. As a matter of fact, all of the food was clearly freshly prepared. We all had enough for lunch the next day. My only complaint is that we had to ask for bread. They didn't automatically bring it to us like the other tables. Romantic lighting. Perfect date spot.

Chadia D.

Yelp
Walking around looking to try a different restaurant, Bottomless mimosas and bellinis caught our attention to this unplanned brunch. We sat inside and it is really nice and cozy. The gentleman that greeted us and waiter were friendly and food was fast and it was excellent. It was clean, great music, great cooks and great service. My husband and I will certainly be back for more.

Mitch A.

Yelp
An excellent spot for high quality Italian food. Homemade noodles, a good selection of flavorful appetizers, and a wine list with lots of grapes from Italy. Our group tried many of the entrees - the pesto dish, the spaghetti, the carbonara - all were incredible. The staff was extraordinarily friendly, making recommendations and allowing us to sample some wines off their list. We ended with a shared tiramisu that was superb. If you're looking to be wowed by homemade pasta and local ingredients made with great care and sourced from local farms, this is the place to go. We were very impressed.

Brandon B.

Yelp
Can't say anything good about my experience. Had the Lamb Pappardelle, which was made so poorly, I thought I received the wrong dish. Lamb itself was dry, no flavor. The pasta looked like it had seen better days and tasted like the chef just gave up. Couldn't finish it. Also had the homemade Tiramisu. One layer was literally frozen; the rest was just OK. I couldn't believe it came out of the kitchen like that. Was like bitting into an ice cube with a creamy top layer. Terrible. I've heard such good things, but man. Not good.

C.M. C.

Yelp
Service is what you'd expect in a place like Lavagna. Food portions are great and they make their own pasta.

Keren D.

Yelp
I came to Lavagna for brunch. It was such a good time with friends. The food was amazing! The drinks were good. The server was attentive. I had a great space. Will go again for brunch when I'm back in DC.

Gary M.

Yelp
We made a reservation because Lavagna advertised live jazz the first Friday of every month. When I made the reservation, I asked to be seated to hear the music. The musicians were friends of mine. When we got to the restaurant, we were told that the music was in the bar: but no food was served in the bar. The maitre d' was, at best, nasty. We left. We won't go back.

Austin M.

Yelp
I went here for their Sunday brunch. I was very impressed with their exemplary service, at no point was my coffee allowed to run too low. As far as the food went the frittata I ordered was hot and fresh and the flavor was top notch.

Nicole M.

Yelp
Beautiful ambiance during the sunset of the evening. Excellent wait staff and delicious food.

Brooklyn C.

Yelp
Never noticed this place until Sunday. I'm happy I stopped in. The staff was super friendly and accommodating. I was able to try a couple of wines to see which bottle I wanted to buy(half off on Sundays). The lobster bisque was alright(could have used more lobster). This lamb dish was really good but I'll ask for more sauce next time be use the noodles were a little dry but the lamb itself was really good. The shrimp risotto stole the show! I wanted to switch meals with my friend lol. I'll be back just for that.

Dona P.

Yelp
Continues to be a solid option and SO glad they survived Covid !!! One star dropped as our GF pasta was slightly over cooked and had turned to mush- but honestly when the lamb and fish and veggies and salad are so delicious- that's what counts !!! Having an affordable glass of of cab sauv on the menu also bonus !! So glad they survived !!

Sydney G.

Yelp
I've only been for brunch but hoooo-leeeee-cow was it delicious! At first I was a little disappointed because the menu seemed a bit limited, but I opted for the Eggs Florentine (Sous Vide Eggs / Focaccia / Spinach / Mornay Sauce / Potatoes) and was completely blown away. First of all the mornay sauce is to DIE for. I've never had eggs that were so good. And the potatoes! Idk what they do to them, but they're quite possible the best breakfast potatoes I've ever had (and I'm verrrry familiar with breakfast potatoes. We go way back). My only complaint is that I don't live closer, because I would like to eat here every weekend.

KC W.

Yelp
I came here for the first time for dinner with a few friends on a Thursday evening, and I admit I was a little worried because of how empty the restaurant was. But all that changed once our food arrived. I ordered the pappardelle lamb, which came with delicious chunks of tender lamb and thick strips of pappardelle noodles. One friend ordered the spaghetti shrimp, while another had the ravioli ricotta. I didn't try the ravioli, but the spaghetti shrimp was also amazing. Honestly how can you go wrong with house-made pasta? I ended the meal with tiramisu which was so creamy and coffee-y - one friend didn't order her own dessert but kept sneaking her fork into my cake...she's lucky I was very full and feeling generous LOL. Drinks were also great - I had the Emilia, a gin cocktail with strawberries, which tasted so refreshing, even on a chilly fall night. My one complaint would be that the focaccia at the beginning of the meal wasn't warm, but otherwise it was a great meal. Service was friendly and attentive, and they were very accommodating when I made a last minute change to my reservation (literally less than 30 min before we were supposed to be seated) to add another person. Not sure what the parking situation is like here, but Eastern Market metro is just a block or so away, and a number of buses run through 8th Street as well. Definitely will be back for some delicious fresh pasta!

Amanda M.

Yelp
First visit and it's been on my list for awhile and I thought it was ok/good but it's unlikely I come back. Foccacia - I really wish it was served warm or was more toasted. I also didn't love the olive oil - it was flavorless. PASTA: Definitely was in the mood for pasta and according to the menu it's handmade from scratch and they also offer GF rigatoni. Risotto Lobster $24 Lobster / Mushrooms / Red Peppers / Asparagus / Cream *only had the claws, didn't see any of the tail unless the bits were extra tiny pieces, didn't love the veggies because they overwhelmed the entire dish, it tasted more like a vegetable risotto, no seafood flavor Spaghetti Shrimp $21 Cherry Tomato / Baby Kale / Thick Spaghetti / Garlic White Wine Sauce *spaghetti was nice, thick and chewy, shrimp was cooked nicely but the garlic white wine sauce was pretty bland; portion was generous DESSERT: There were only 3 desserts and we ordered the chocolate dessert and not only was it extremely small it wasn't good, gave it two bites and pushed it aside SERVICE: Consistent with refilling both water and wine glasses from the bottle we ordered.

Andrea L.

Yelp
We were visiting from out of town, and staying nearby. After a long day with lots of walking it was really great to discover Lavagna. Homemade pastas and fresh salads, and very attentive service, were all really wonderful! Radiatore primavera, among others, was delicious! Salads were inventive and tasty. And desserts seemed really, really fresh and were also delicious. We highly recommend this if you are in the area!

Alexa C.

Yelp
Perfect hidden gem on barracks row near the miracle! Great brunch options and great service.

Carol K.

Yelp
Delicious food and fantastic service! You had me homemade pasta!! The house made spaghetti bolognese is one of the I've ever eaten. I personally love the thick spaghetti it's served with. You can tell this sauce takes hours to make and created with care. My husband's lamb ragu was so tender, I kept stealing bites. The super Tuscan wine Brandon suggested was a fantastic pairing for both of our pasta dishes. It was reasonably priced as well. We started our meals with the lobster bisque, which was rich and delicious. The calamari was cooked to perfection! We shared the Brussels sprouts, and the cranberries it was paired with was an interesting twist that was ideal for the season. Nice serving size for sharing. We end the meal with a slice of the lemon zest cheesecake, which with the house made lemoncillo was a perfect way to finish the meal! If I lived in DC I would order takeout and/or delivery weekly. I can't wait to try more of this menu. I will definitely be back. The staff was all wearing masks and gloves. The tables were very well spaced out, probably more than 6 feet apart. Do your part and support this amazing restaurant.

Nancy D.

Yelp
Brunch portions are generous and tasty. The Italian sausage gravy is a bit sweet - maybe honey in the biscuits?, but the grandmas breakfast hits all the marks with eggs, sausage, toast and potatoes. Bottomless Bellinis are a steal at $19 and the bloody eddy is well made with just enough kick. Service impeccable. People watching outside is fun and cushions in chairs are an added plus. Will return!!!

Yelp
I was on 8th St looking for a good Italian meal. So I came across Lavagna and they had some good options on the menu. They had indoor and outdoor seating where everyone's far apart to practice social distancing. The bruschetta wasn't my favorite thing to try but the pasta was good and had a fresh taste. The Brussels were also tasty. The waiter recommended the lemon zest cheesecake as well and it didn't disappoint. The service was good and gave hidden gem aura so if your looking for a good Italian meal, give it a try.

Yelp
I usually have a great time with great food when I go to Lavagna, so its unfortunate to have to write this review today. The service at Lavagna was completely and utterly subpar, in fact it was blatantly not good. Our waiter's name was Brandon, which I only learned from our receipt because he never introduced himself, and Brandon did not ask my table what we wanted to drink, repeatedly came to our table last in his rounds, reached in front of our faces and over our food to pour water or grab plates, and he showed no type of positive emotion whatsoever. Additionally, he was blatantly more kind to tables with white customers. This is very disheartening, as Lavagna's service is usually excellent, but our experience with Brandon has taken Lavagna off our list of go to spots. For our food, we got the mussels in white wine sauce and maple bacon for starters. The mussels were delicious, a must order, but the bacon was not flavorful or what we had expected so we let Brandon know we didn't like it. Brandon then proceeded to repeatedly question us about why we didn't like the bacon and visually inspect how much we had tried before taking it off the bill-we didn't appreciate that. We also got a tray, with prosciutto (double) and gouda cheese-excellent & fresh. Great combinations of tray extras. For our main meals we ordered the paparedelle lamb, pesto with chicken and shrimp spaghetti. All of the dishes were a solid 6/10, not my best experience with dinner at Lavagna. Also, there was an extremely loud party in the back seating area. That took away from the experience as well. Ultimately, due to Brandon we will not be coming back, even for the great mussels. *****NEXT DAY UPDATE****** Upon our complaint about the service, we promptly received a call from the general manager apologizing for the experience. We greatly appreciated the apologetic nature of the general manager. Lavagna clearly values the experiences of their customers, and we will give it another try.

Yelp
Wow, have I been sleeping on this place. Delicious, homemade pasta. I got the pesto with shrimp - fresh, flavorful, and delicious. Nice wine selection too. Very elegant restaurant from food to vibes. We'll be back!

Yelp
Flat-out-awesome. Well done, Lavagna! :) They go out of their way to plate beautifully and present elegantly. Kudos to the Chef! Entrees are medium size and filling. Perfect pasta. Service spot-on. Lavagna rocks 8th Ave in the South end. Bellissima! Besides underage girls fiddling Pappy's retirement to dine out and bitch about bread, olive oil, other girls or drinks, Lavagna cooks up Italian flavor! If your Yelp 'fave meal' is Ramen or sushi or 'general tso' or fish eggs that GLOW- go eat panda express. Rebel review: 5 stars

Yelp
Lavagna has been on my list of places to try forever, and I finally visited for both happy hour and dinner over the last few months. Happy hour is at the bar, and drinks are discounted significantly, along with a few appetizers. I had a delicious and large Aperol Spritz (HH $7) and split bruschetta (HH $6) with a friend. The wood bar gives off a cozy vibe and is great for a relaxing happy hour. The bartenders are friendly too. At dinner time, the portions for the pasta are very large, and the pasta is good. I tried both the Rigatoni Pesto ($19) and Shrimp Pasta and enjoyed both. However, there are other places with homemade Italian and a wider selection of pastas and sauces that excite me a bit more. My dinner was good but not great. As a plus, Lavagna has really cute Christmas decorations during the holiday season.

Yelp
Fast service with very kind people. The pasta is handmade from scratch too! Their menu is small but carefully curated to something enjoyable for everyone. Definitely will come again and try something new!

Yelp
I had the risotto. My friend had the ravioli. We shared a bottle of the server recommended red wine. Just amazing. The risotto was DELICIOUS! I can't wait to go back and plan to do so often so I can eat my way through the menu. This place is wonderful. If you are a foodie, put it at the top of your list to try. You won't be disappointed. if you typically eat low-carb (like me), the homemade pasta at Lasagna is worth every single carb.

Yelp
$12 bottomless mimosas. Let me say that again, $12 bottomless mimosas. And these aren't your average orange juice with a splash of champagne mimosas either, these mimosas are made with orange juice, champagne, and triple sec. These mimosas are the proper light orange color. The food is good too but a little pricier. Omelettes are between $15-18 dollars and other entrees are between $12-20. The food is very good though. I've been here for both dinner and brunch and have never been disappointed. They also have gluten free pasta as well. The only strange thing is the omelettes though. As others have mentioned, they simply pile the omelette toppings on the plate and then drape the egg over top of it, this leaves cheese that is barely melted... still good but it would be nice if the cheese was melted. Service is always really friendly and helpful. Also, you only get 90 minutes for bottomless mimosas and they are pretty strict about it.

Yelp
We went here for brunch and had a nice time. I wanted to sit on the patio, but it was full. They seated us way in the back of the restaurant in a new built in room they added. That seat would be perfect on a cold winter night. But when it's a breezy and sunny day in DC, I asked to move to the patio. They were able to accommodate us. I tried the goat cheese omelette and it was fine except for the balsamic vinegar that covered the dish. I'll try this place again and will make sure to tell them to leave the balsamic vinegar off any egg dishes. I have yet to try dinner here.

Yelp
I would say I feel comfortable giving 3.5 stars but this was definitely not a 4 star experience. We made reservations for date night and were seated immediately upon arrival at 7:30 on a Saturday. we were greeted quickly by our server with water and time to look over the menu. Fresh foccacia was delivered shortly after. we ordered the apple salad (Arugula / Fennel / apple / white Onion / vinaigrette) for a starter to share. I ordered the lamb papardelle (Amish Cornmeal Papardelle / Lamb Ragu / Red Peppers) and my husband ordered the ravioli ricotta (Free Range Runny Egg Yolk / Parmesan / Beef and Pork Marinara). Our appetizer salad was quickly delivered but for the price of $9 and the size, I would highly recommend any other appetizer on the menu. The flavors were quite bitter too and not pleasant. The portion size is also not ideal for sharing and is quite small. I took over 30 minutes for our food to be delivered. My husband commented his was extremely luke warm. I tasted it and confirmed the sentiment. The flavors on his dish were nice, particularly the runny egg, but for taking 30 minutes-that dish should be pipping hot! Mine was slightly warmer than his but not by much. The portion of lamb was tender and quite generous. The pasta was nicely cooked and the red peppers were plentiful. My husband was fine eating his dish, but truth be told, if it were mine, I would have sent it back because it was unacceptable at the temperature served. Another thing that irked us slightly was that we never received balsamic vinegar to blend with the olive oil and pepper for our bread as the other tables around us did, both serviced by our same server. The flavors in our entree meals (did not enjoy the salad) were nice but for $52 with no drinks......I doubt I would return since there are so many other restaurants, especially in this area, that can deliver better price point and superior quality. I am glad, though, I finally knocked this off my bookmark list.

Yelp
Lavagna is my favorite Italian place in DC. The atmosphere is perfect. It's very quaint and nice. It's a great spot for an intimate evening. They have my favorite muscles (lemon blanc sauce) in the DC area. Their ravioli ricotta is my favorite pasta dish I've discovered. The ricotta is so good but yet not too rich and their pasta sauce is unreal! Service is always prompt and informative. They have an uncorking fee of $20 which is comparable to their $40+ wine selections. Highly recommend Lavagna

Yelp
My friend and I had just finished the St. Jude's Walk for Childhood Cancer, so we were HANGRY! She recommended Lavagna, and we arrive there around 10:40 am. It wasn't too crowded yet, so we got to sit outside. Our service was impeccable--my mimosa glass was NEVER empty! Even when the restaurant became super busy, my server continued to ensure that our water and mimosa glasses stayed full to the brim. I got the goat cheese omelet, which was savory and delicious. I'm not a huge goat cheese fan, so I probably wouldn't get it again, but it was still good. I head the chicken and waffles are amazing, and the side potatoes were well seasoned and tasty. Definitely somewhere I would like to return to!

Yelp
This has been my go to restaurant for years when I want a solid meal and a relaxing atmosphere. The menu isn't cutting edge and rarely changes, but you can be guaranteed a consistently delicious meal and some of the best service in the city. I'm moving to Los Angeles and I'm going to miss this neighborhood spot. Do yourself a favor and visit right away! Also, Sunday and Tuesday they offer half price bottles of wine and their wine program is solid and reasonably priced. My go to entrees are the pappardelle lamb and the rigatoni pesto with sausage. For an appetizer, I do the provolone salad. Also, the Bell and Evans chicken is salad. But honestly, there's really not a bad option on the menu.
