On the Grid : Little Bao

"If Chinese food mated with an American diner Little Bao would be its offspring. And a very hip baby it is too, full of good vibes and friendly staff. The interior is like a diner and small so if you're not there early be prepared to be put on a waiting list but it's worth it. The food takes the Chinese bao or fluffy white bun and fills it with untraditional ingredients. I love the pork belly bao, so succulent and full of flavor. There are also beef, szechaun fried chicken, fish tempura and vegetarian baos. There are other dishes for sharing too like the divine short ribbed pan fried dumplings and smoked eggplant. When it opened Little Bao became an overnight sensation and deservedly so. To make sure you find it look for the cute neon baby face." - Angela Ho

"As the name suggests, the focus here is on baos, i.e., Vietnamese buns filled with pork and fish, though the sides are equally compelling: There are Brussels sprouts (topped with fish sauce and fried shallots) and sambal-inflected fries, along with slabs of green tea ice cream sandwiched between deep-fried buns."

30 Best Restaurants in Hong Kong

"Little Bao oozes cool both inside and out, but you’ll be surprised at the tiny space—just about 10 seats at the bar and another 10 off to the right. Designed by Hong Kong creative Sean Dix, the tiled floors, white-tiled walls, shiny stainless steel, bar stools and pictures of vintage Hong Kong mailboxes create a modern diner vibe. Chef May Chow puts as much thought into the food as she does the atmosphere, offering delicious, creative, and very popular baos and sharing dishes. But a word of warning: Don’t visit Little Bao if you’re on any kind of diet." - Kate Springer

We were recommended this place by some blogger and were looking for something easy on our last night in HK and this place did absolutely NOT disappoint!! Apparently there are two places in HK but this one is the original but had little seating places. It was a good 10-20min walk from our hotel in Central and located on a nice square. They do a nice menu but we thought it might be a bit much for us so we just picked a few bao’s to share and the dumplings 🥟! They have different styles of bao’s and our absolute favourite was definitively the Pork Bao! Oh boy it was so delicious! They also offer some sides but we didn’t try them, as the bao’s quickly filled us up! You can see the bao’s being prepared in front of you and everyone is super friendly- We can definitely recommend this Bao place, for lunch or dinner ! A must visit when you are in town ! 💛

The place is small but cozy, the music is not too loud so you can talk fine and the playlist is nice. The food was deliciously amazing! The teriyaki chicken bao is a must try. So are the dumplings and the truffle fries. The signature cocktail bao cha hey bao is a good choice to pair with the food. The staff is so nice and so helpful with anything. Loved this place.

We had a tremendous time at Little Bao! Having discovered the restaurant in a French TV documentary, we went for dinner and Melvin was an incredible host! He gave us fantastic recommendations and took the time to talk us through the menu and was super helpful. The food was stunning, with lots of different flavours. The tasting menu was a great way to discover many dishes. Special mention for the caramel dessert bao that was delicious. The beef dumplings were beautiful, as well as the fish bao. Do yourself a favour and run to Little Bao! (The space is tiny so make sure you book in advance.

(Visited April 2025) Would rate my experience 2 stars because of the terrible service. We booked our reservation last minute for the last seating because it was our last night in HK and we wanted to try some small plates from here. When we got there the servers didn’t seem pleased to see us. The server who took our order was impatient and kept reacting and making faces whenever we asked questions / ordered. She even got mad at us for cutting the bao into 3! I understand it’s really small but the 3 of us wanted to try a little of everything. Felt like they were all watching us eat the entire time and even talking about us. We wanted to end the meal with 1 dessert bao but server questioned our choice. Disappointing! This is not my first time here but I’m shocked at how bad the service was during my last visit.

Absolutely loved Little Bao! The bao burgers were super soft and fluffy. We tried the chicken and pork versions — both were made right in front of us, which made it a fun experience. The chicken was really tender and fresh, and everything was served hot and full of flavor. The staff were super friendly and even gave us some cute stickers to take home. The place is a bit small and we found it little difficult to find after getting down at the metro, but once you get there, it’s totally worth it. Definitely a must-try when you’re in Hong Kong!

From appetisers to desserts, the quality and quantity of the food surpassed our expectations. Don’t miss out trying their signature pork belly bao!

So. *******. Good. I stopped by 15 minutes before closing and they were still welcoming, attentive and the food was delicious. Great vibe, and delicious food. Definitely check it out.
