Macrina Bakery & Cafe Review - Sodo - Seattle - The Infatuation

"You already know Macrina Bakery. Their SoDo cafe has a nice space that’s perfect for getting some work done, which is a real anomaly in this neighborhood unless you want to try getting a parking spot at the teeny Starbucks on 1st Ave S. Good luck with that. At lunch here, you’ll find sandwiches on their fresh bread, as well as salads and pasta. If you’re lucky, the cake samples will come out." - Aimee Rizzo

Google
Great coffee, fresh pastries and cakes and lovely experience overall. Seating can be bit of an issue seeing how crowded it gets, but worth the wait.

Google
Solid bakery fit a great morning start. Coffee was refreshing as well. We ate here before embarking on our cruise travels to Alaska…it was a short walk from the pier. The people seemed especially hospitable and we enjoyed our quick breakfast.

DIY-ed my own salmon cream cheese bagel. It was really tasty, and the cafe was not full on a rainy day! Would recommend.

Sweet little coffee shop. It was so yummy! The food and pastries and coffee were just great! I highly recommend checking this place out! The breakfast sandwiches were delicious and fill you up perfectly!

I can’t praise this cafe enough! The staff are such wonderful people, and the food is absolutely amazing. We love trying something new each visit, and we were lucky to have no line this time. Even when the cafe is super busy, they are always attentive to small requests and details. Highly recommend this place for a delightful dining experience.

Savory pinwheel, morning roll and orange hazel pinwheel are must trys. Breakfast croissant sandwich and their bagels are good as well.

Another branch of the best local artisan bakery service that sells baked good, cakes, pastries and coffee in Seattle. The staff is friendly and service is pretty fast even in busy times. We usually stop after a group ride on weekends. There’s indoors and outdoor seating. Selection of pastries include both savory and sweet is large and their menu keeps rotating to include seasonal flavors. They also sell merchandise like tshirts, bags, mugs, locally roasted coffee beans. Love their coffee and lattes - perfect blend of caffeine and milk. Their breakfast/lunch menu is also good. A definitely must try local bakery of Seattle!

Google
First time here. Th staff was very helpful and knowledgeable about the menu. Ordered a mocha and a chai tea. Both were a good temperature. Not scalding and not to cold. Our snack to go with the coffee was a raspberry bar, and an almond cranberry biscotti. I loved them both! Biscotti was big too! For the meal we had quiche. The temperature could’ve been warmer. A little too cold for my liking. This was the first time I had a quiche with a crust I liked. I have never liked the crust until trying theirs. Loved the flaky light layers of crust. It was perfect for this creamy cheesy quiche. Atmosphere was nice and clean. I’ll keep it in mind to come back again some time.

Yelp
Macrina Bakery is a favorite for a reason! I ordered two of their apple pies and it was so delicious. The crust baked to perfection, apples were not too sweet and topped off with some powdered sugar. Yum! The workers were all so helpful, especially because I was taking my time to order... Though I will say, the minor attitude over my indecisiveness wasn't too appreciated. Located in Belltown, and on a Friday was for sure busy. Not really the location to sit because of all the hustle and bustle.

Yelp
This is a cute little bakery in Belltown with decent seating. We got a bagel sandwich and that bialy sandwich. The bialy, while tasty, was a lot more buttery than most bialys I've had. The sandwich fillings were yummy. The bagel sandwich was actually supposed to be on the Cornetto; when we asked to change it to a bagel, they said they'd have to charge for a whole bagel in addition to the sandwich price. Meh, ok, then give us that Cornetto on the side. The bagel was disappointing; no good chew. If they do boil their bagels, I'd be surprised. It's a cute spot with friendly service. But it's not a standout.

Yelp
I came in for a late lunch and to get some desserts for later that night. I got an apple tart and a chocolate walnut tart and they knocked the socks off my partner we shared both. You cannot miss here I mean it's Macrina. Enough said! I ordered a half Verdura sandwich and was sorry I didn't order the whole one. This sandwich was amazing. Served on toasted Macrina bread with roasted veggies, shaved brussell sprouts, julienned beets, sliced yellow squash, yellow chile pepper and melty mozzarella. The chile gave the sandwich a bit of an edge. I was hooked. I went back the next day and ordered the whole one! Nom. I also got a pumpkin bar which was like a tiny slice of spicy pumpkin heaven. Staff are super friendly and it's super casual. Love coming here anytime I'm in the area.

Yelp
This shop is quaint and minimally decorated. I would say it has limited selection compared to other bakeries I've been to. The service was nice. I probs would go back if I was in the area but don't think it's somewhere I'd go out of my way. Would be a good door to grab and go. Cheesecake - 7/10, very rich but good Ham and cheese brioche - 9/10 . I thought the herbs on the top was too much but the warm cheesiness was perfect. Hot chocolate - 5/10 Mocha -8/10

Yelp
Delicious!! Cozy spot offers, fresh bread, sandwiches, salads, fresh drinks, gifts take home, breakfast goodies, and a ray of tea and lunch quiches and other yummy snacks. They have free Wi-Fi and a vibe about them. They offer indoor and outdoor seating and free water on tap, which is self-serve. Quick and friendly, and they bag up everything for you and make coffees on the spot

Yelp
Good place to get some work done and enjoy their baked goods! I tried their mini raspberry cheesecake which was pretty good. Also had their matcha latte but wouldn't get it again as it wasn't that flavorful. Overall a nice place to work and enjoy some goodies.

Yelp
While in Seattle, we were in walking distance to this breakfast spot, beware the weekend lines are long but moves pretty fast, love the quaintness of this bakery and especially the wall mural. Now for the baked goods, the croissants were flaky and buttery, the muffins were good. I did not love the bialy with eggs, it was pretty bland, however the coffee was delicious.

Yelp
This location is a busy storefront with active bakery in the back. Very bright, clean, with great service staff. I always have to try a chocolate croissant at new places and this one was amazing. Buttery and flakey with the right amount of chocolate. Washed that down with a nice latte. I also had the Carne Sandwich which was very fresh and smelled great. Had a nice balance of flavors with a tiny amount of heat. Of course it was on a bun that was freshly baked and it was the perfect vessel for the sandwich.

Yelp
Caffe latte was good with pretty latte art Highly recommend the cornetto with fromage blanc if you like cheese

Yelp
I can't believe I waited this long to try this place out!! What a great spot on the way to Pikes! They have every pastry you could want, all for about $5-8. I will say, the morning glory roll is a MUST. It is perfectly flakey and sweet all in one! The only thing I would dock a point for is that there are flies that fly all over the baked pastries that sit in the open shelf. Despite that, the pastries are too good! I would personally also stay away from the bagels - they were quite chewy in texture and hard to get down, they also didn't fair well the next day even reheated. The biscuits were a little on the drier side, the vegan biscuit also had a more cornbread type taste and texture. The line can be long sometimes, but it goes fairly quickly! A great box of treats to pick up for an event! Expect to pay about $40 for a half dozen variety pastries!

Yelp
This spot was recommended to me so we stopped in for a snack. The café is pretty small but we did manage to snag a high top in a corner. The ham & cheese brioche was good but I wish there was an option for a different cheese since Gruyere is strong and tastes almost like swiss. The coffee was pretty good (this is Seattle after all) but simple. I also tried part of a sweet pastry with nuts and cinnamon that was decadent but baked well. Overall, I can see why locals like this spot and if I were to come back again I think I'd try some other items.

Yelp
I went here for gluten free options and I was not disappointed. They have a handful of gluten free and vegan treats to choose from. They have a delicious chocolate berry gluten free vegan muffin. I also purchased their gluten free sliced bread. The bread was overpriced and they only give you half a loaf for about $11. They literally cut the loaf in half and give you half the slices of bread. It looks so bad on presentation. Otherwise, I really like this bakery. The cafe was cute and ample open seating. The service was good as well.

Yelp
I love all the pastries! The staff is friendly and my kids enjoy the atmosphere! definitely a treat to go here!

Yelp
Monday morning this place is full but no wait! The pastries are gorgeous. The cinnamon roll is a buttery and crunchy croissant style with ample frosting! The latte is perfection. The shop is a gift to Belltown!

Yelp
I love the variety of pastries and breads offered at Macrina Bakery! I tried the following: 1. 8oz. Vanilla Sugar Latte ($4.55) - this is made with their housemade Vanilla Sugar, and it is so good. I highly recommend this! 2. Bialy Egg Sandwich ($10.75) - delicious and shareable. I recommend getting this! 3. Morning Roll ($5.25) - crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. Lightly sweet and salty, I loved this one! 4. Raspberry Buttermilk Biscuit ($5.25) - I recommend! 5. Blueberry Scone ($4.65) - lots of blueberries and not dry at all. I recommend it! 6. Marionberry Jam Biscuit ($5.50) - this is gluten-free and had a cornbread texture. Good, but not my favorite. Overall, I enjoyed everything I ordered from here. Service was great from one server and meh from another person who was working the front. I highly recommend checking this place out if you're looking for breakfast in this area of downtown!

Yelp
Decked with comfortable seating, a high ceiling, and a wide selection of pastries, sandwiches, and a bread shelf. You don't see the same variety and availability at other bakeries, which is a signal that Macrina's got the good stuff and people know it.

D G.

Yelp
Good pastries, always. Just came in at 3:25pm. 6 empty tables. All dirty. Counter staff doing nothing. Except waiting for their shifts to end, maybe. I wouldn't care so much except I'm meeting someone here for the first time, so I'd rather not invite her to sit with me at a dirty table.

Yelp
Literally everything here is divine. Their breads are peak, their extra strong coffee/espresso with hand-infused vanilla sugar, fire; their salads, perfection; their homemade soups never disappoint, and I've tried so many different soups. Their breakfast sandwiches with homemade biscuits are great, too. The shop is always clean, the service is always fast, especially for how busy it can get sometimes; and the. Staff is always friendly. I highly recommend.

L.L. D.

Yelp
Pre-packaged sandwiches. They had NO mayonnaise or salad dressing or sour cream to put on the dry chicken sandwich! Chicken tasted old. Had chocolate cupcake that was Stale & DRY.

Yelp
I suppose the bakery still has ok pastry. I watched the huge truck in front loading pastries to many places in the Seattle as this is a major hub for producing and supplying pastry in Seattle. Is it because it is cheaper? I wondered. I am a resident here, not one of the many tourists. I am so disappointed today with the matcha drink - there is nearly no matcha powder in it and appeared to be just milk foam and slight greenish color, see photo. It is a cup of confusion. I paid the drink plus a almond pinwheel pastry for over $10. And I added $1 tip to it. I had to wait 5 min for a seat without any help, then clean up the table myself; go get the drink myself; then only to find out that drink is just warm water trying to wash a cup used for milk??? I am not exactly a coffee snob. Neither I ever ask a business to take unnecessary loss - whenever dishes r given by mistake, I have always just ate it and paid for them, my family teaching is everyone 's life is not that easy, and it is a great virtue to enjoy good things in bad situations, such a small thing it would have been. However the many many many many things of this place this particular morning, really makes you think. During Covid, a lot of us showed our sympathy and believed that businesses in our community needed our support. We showed up when we could, we contributed when we can, we have extra tips with no one asking, hoping the businesses will go on and waiters' families will survive- only to feed into some strange behavior of Most of the dinning places. Seriously, it is crazy how fast we have all accepted the lack of integrity. It is absolutely time to stop this. During the one hour I stayed in this place, only one staff cleaned A table once, right after I complained about my drink. Zero times anything else is cleaned in the room for guests. Dose anyone else also feel little gross these days, when any type of eating place, always left with other people 's bread crumbs without proper cleaning by the store??? YET - greedily suggested to pay a tip with lowest % of over 20%???

Yelp
4/5 stars. First impression hit strong with this one. My friends and I headed over to Macrina for a quick bite and coffee before doing the Victoria Clipper Whale Watching tour. The line was out the door. Walking in, the vibe is energizing. You hear the hustle and bustle of coffee being made, chatter among friends, gawking at others' furry companions (service animals only, FYI), and of course, various iterations of awe and indecision as each person walks up to the plexiglass display to peep the golden brown goodies. Be careful not to get carried away, because everything looks THAT good....or you know what - Throw all caution to the wind and get it ALL. No judgment here (except maybe some jealously if you do the latter). It's hard not to stall the line here because everything LOOKS magazine-perfect. Here's where I dock a star. Taste was *almost* perfect. Almost. The Bialy brekkie sandwich is an indulgence. I got it cuz bacon, and c'mon...bacon! Next time I know to ask for extra crispy. That crisp would have taken this to *perfect.* There are plenty of soft textures in this sandwich, bacon need not be one of them. I also got the orange currant scone. I would have loved more orange flavor here. Texture was beautiful though! Coffee - great! Soy milk latte was above average. Espresso was pulled at the right time - no burnt bitterness here. I added a sprinkle of cinnamon and was content. I regret not getting a size up. Final thoughts: Overall, solid pastry/bread spot. Is it perfect? No. But *almost* perfect is good enough for me. I will be back - and strongly recommend Macrina for any of you baked good fans out there. Again - not perfect, but high enough up there to know I'll visit again and again.

Yelp
Omg this bakery is too cute. We only got to-go orders but the food was sooo good. We tried the famous banana bread, granola cookies and vegan muffins. The banana bread and the granola cookies were to die for. The staff were super friendly and gave me great recommendations and even bought out fresh banana bread from the back. Loved the service and the food. The ambience is very chic and fresh. A must visit!

Yelp
Ordered delivery from here after seeing one or two remarks about the service being a bit under par for in house. Also worth it for me as I have to work through breakfast and lunch most days. Got a few things to try and also share with my friends (as we normally all do not take sweets often): Ham and cheese brioche roll: PROS: - great quantity, look at how big this thing is! - On DoorDash, do you have the option of answering whether you want it delivered cold or hot. Definitely warm for me. - Did a quick 15 to 20 second reheat in the microwave upon return, and it was amazing. - Not too salty, perfect amount of Ham to cheese to Bread ratio - The bread was super soft and fluffy - Not burned anywhere CONS: - none. Cookies: ginger molasses and chocolate chip PROS: - Really good quantity, each cookie was about the size of my palm - cookies are super soft in the middle, not burnt underneath. - For DoorDash, it's actually cheaper to get multiple cookies and a batch, same with their rolls (e.g.. Cinnamon roll). CONS: - none Morning roll PROS: - Nice big fluffy sized roll. - Bread was super soft - nice balance of flavors. CONS: - none Would definitely get pastries from here again. It's not too close from where I am currently residing during my trip, so ordering delivery, while a little bit more expensive, was worth it.

Yelp
What a gem of a place. The coffee (had my usual Cappuccino) was fabulous, a nice and smooth coffee. So good. The only problem with the baked items, which to choose, they all looked so fabulous. I went for the almond, cherry scone. Moist, tasty with a nice crisp exterior. There is nothing not to like here and the service was excellent. Highly recommend a visit.

Yelp
On a Saturday late morning, I decided to make a walk to Belltown to check this bakery out. A lot of places have pastries from Macrina, but I always waited to try out the food at the actual location as that is where quality should be the highest. It was fairly busy, with a small line and almost full house - seating is first come first serve, fast casual restaurant style. I ordered the bialy egg sandwich with nitrate-free bacon add-on, as well as a cherry almond scone as it was highly recommended to me. Both items were pretty alright - I wished they were a little bit more consistent in delivering the food. The bialy egg sandwich works well for a nice meal. I have never had bialy before, but it was nicely toasted, though I wished it was more fresh as the end pieces were a little bit tough to chew. The egg is cooked decently well - soft boiled to an extent, but it was also slightly overcooked - I am not sure what texture they are aiming for on this. I really liked the tomatoes and basil they added - the tomatoes tasted like a marinara sauce which was great as I am generally not much of a fan of regular tomatoes. The bacon I added was alright - it gave some more protein but it was a bit tough to chew - I personally prefer it to be very crunchy. The cherry almond scone has a nice almond extract flavor - scones I guess are by nature a bit dry so pairing it with the water made it much more enjoyable (though, obviously, it is best eaten with tea or coffee). The only downside to this is that the distribution of ingredients is not the best - there were so many cherry raisins and almonds on one end of the scone, and I was eating just dough on the other end. A slight plus side is that, when you get a water cup, there are 2 tap handles - one for still water, and one for sparkling water. There are a lot of people filling their bottles with still or sparkling water, as it was complimentary. It was great to see that even sparkling water is free here, which is quite rare in a restaurant.

Yelp
Macrina is a welcome find for a nice bakery style breakfast and coffee in this part of Belltown. We enjoyed the Brioche Breakfast Sandwich, chocolate croissant mrs, coffees and Sausage Breakfast Biscuit. Interior is chill with locals on laptops as well as tourists.
google avatar

Alanna L.

Yelp
I want to like this place because it's a staple here in Seattle. I just find their coffee to be really mediocre and the breads dry. They do know how to make a buttery croissant and have good cookies. Just a meh place for me unfortunately with so many great bakeries around.
google avatar

Sean G.

Yelp
Macrina ROCKS - amazing breakfast treats and everything is fresh and so tasty!!! Some parking out front but easy to stroll to from the area! BIALY EGG SANDWICH - Brioche Bialy baked with roasted sweet onions and poppy seeds, layered with two fried eggs, roasted tomatoes, goat cheese, fresh basil and Dijon.

Yelp
It's great that some things never change. We started coming to this location when we lived in the building. In fact, we specifically chose not to buy our loft on this side because we didn't think we could resist Macrina if we lived right over it. We stopped in for some breakfast and coffee on a Friday morning and everything was like I remember it. That doesn't mean it's the same, my memory often plays little tricks. Service was friendly and quick, coffees were ready immediately, and the small breakfast sandwiches were super tasty (I prefer the Italiano because pesto on a breakfast sandwich is awesome). If you're looking for great breads and baked goods I always send people to Macrina and have done so for years. Do yourself a favor and give them a try.

Yelp
The bakery has the best pastries in the neighborhood. Wow- everything looks amazing! Fresh breads, pastries and breakfasts - I love it. The coffee is meh. The atmosphere is cool, very hip. The staff were helpful answering my questions about the baked goods. The seating was awful though - which is why I took off one star. All the chairs are flat seats - very hard to sit in for long. The table legs have cross brackets at the feet - very hard to comfortably place my feet anywhere normal to focus on enjoying the baked goods. The tables were made of polished concrete I think - so they were very cold. And the height of the tables was awkward - good for different sizes for people maybe, but awkward for myself. Was the uncomfortable seating intentional to shoo patrons out quicker like McDonalds?? I'll definitely be back, but not to sit and enjoy - I'll take to-go.

Yelp
Macrina Belltown is a side nook on 1st Avenue and brief getaway from a busy world. There are welcoming pastries that tug at one's ability to resist and espresso so well made that it doesn't matter if you collapsed to that frosted cinnamon roll. The help is friendly and so supportive. Lea, Aiya, Katherine, Mo and Rain easily come to mind.
google avatar

Yelp
Always good quality bread, coffee and pastries. Their breakfast menu is full of great options. My favorite is the avocado toast. The service is always great! Offering sparkling and regular water as well as the coffee condiments makes it worth the visit.

Rapy J.

Yelp
This shop offers exceptional cakes, particularly the Vegan Raspberry Oat Scone, which is incredibly tasty and exceptionally fresh. Despite the busy atmosphere, it is well worth the visit. During my visit, the staff was highly focused on serving, which left little opportunity for eye contact with customers.

Yelp
We very much enjoyed Macrina while staying in Belltown. Friendly service, clean and comfortable space to enjoy the AMAZING food and drinks, and they are open all day! Nothing to complain about... not a single thing! Everything we tried was absolutely delightful! These folks know how to bake! OMG!!!

Yelp
Great pastry, great service. Great ambiance . Will come back. Staff were nice and friendly.

Yelp
We came here from a recommendation from our Food Tour guide. This is not a fancy place but just a simple bakery with some seatings. We came here on a Sunday morning and business was very brisk for them. I ordered some bake goods to take home with me to San Francisco and we had a couple of breakfast sandwiches at the store. I ordered the brioche sandwich and the Bialy Egg Sandwich with bacon. Both were delicious but my preference was the brioche.

Yelp
We were in the area and wanted some pastries so decided to check this place out. There was a line when we got there but the wait wasn't too bad. They have a variety of pastries to choose from as well as entrees. We got a few pastries to go and ate some outside as it was a little cramp inside where the line was. Morning roll: these are like croissant shaped into a roll with a light sweet glaze. Definitely eat this the day of as it deteriorated the next day, but definitely a winner in my book: crispy outside, soft inside, with a hint of sweetness Savory pinwheel: similar to the morning roll, but just savory. I didn't think this one was super great or anything though, just standard. Dill scone: I love the flavor on this one. Oh and pop it in the oven once you get home and it's amazing! Love the crispy exterior. Pecan sticky bun: when I ate it cold it was good, but my hubby didn't like it. He liked it when it was heated up more but I didn't care for it much :). I do like the prefab toppings though. Pecan apricot oatmeal cookies: oooh this was really good, love the slight crunch of the cookie as well as the flavor. You don't really get the apricot or really any flavor but the crunch makes it worth it. It does soften after a day but if you toast it in the oven, you get the crunch back :) Mini ginger caramel cupcake: stronger ginger flavor, and soft and very good bite size snack Overall, a pretty good place for pastries, definitely worth a try if you're in the area

Yelp
We stayed at Belltown Court in Seattle as we usually do when we visit our son and daughter in law. And we are so lucky to have this fantastic bakery right next door to our apartment entrance. Can't say enough about their pastries! Yummy, fresh and delicious as always. There is usually a line out the door but it moves quickly so just be patient it's worth the wait!
google avatar

Carolina R.

Yelp
I got a coffee and really delicious cinnamon bun. Kinda small inside, so I took my stuff to go. The coffee was good and the cinnamon bun was the best I've had. Just wish they would have heated it up, but I did when I got back home and it was so much better. Definitely recommend

Yelp
Great pastry selection! Attentive staff and the seating lounge is a good size for this area of town.

Yelp
How have I stayed at the Ace Hotel for the last decade and never gone here‍ This is a special place to eat! The baked goods are so fresh and delicious. The coffee is fantastic and I had a slice of kale and cherry tomato quiche. Oh yeah I ate it before I could take a pic but I took a pic of the raspberry crumble bar. It was so buttery and dense pure shortbread with crumbles. I stay away from most sweets but I caved today and am going back tomorrow for another one for the drive home! The staff are so patient and friendly

Yelp
My favorite European coffee & bakery in Seattle the best flaky croissants and bread! I love their iconic pink box.

Yelp
Horrible, quiche was burnt on the outside and raw in the middle. The coffee tasted burnt Staff was friendly

Yelp
It's a cute cafe with a lot of yummy looking bakery options. I tried the raspberry cornetto and decided to sit and read. There is a decent amount of seating although it at times it does seem to fill up quite quickly. They opened up the window and had the fan off so there is a lot of air circulation which makes it feel safer to sit around and eat since covid is still technically around. The raspberry cornetto was described to me as a croissant version of a raspberry donut and it was. There is a good amount of filling which makes it a delight to eat but also a smidge messy. As far as croissants go, this is soft and not super buttery. It did make it a bit plain when there wasn't filling to go along with it. If you're looking for a crispy croissant, this is not the pastry to get. Overall I did enjoy it even if it's not my favorite pastry I've tried in Seattle.

Chrissa Y.

Yelp
When you're in Seattle and touring the Space Needle and Chihuly, you have to stop by the best bakery in the city. You can also find their selection in PCCs
google avatar

Wendi K.

Yelp
Questionable whether it's fair to rate a bakery based on a single pastry I tried and the kind and polite way I was treated by the staff yet here I am. The dill scone ($4.50) was humongous, cheesy, perfectly textured and packed full of flavor.
google avatar

Shannon L.

Yelp
Noticed more vegan options in the pastry case last time I went! I didn't buy these, but their chai is reliably good.

Toni F.

Yelp
Wonderful breakfast sandwiches, cookies, deserts, pastries, and bread! The people who work there are lovely, friendly, and happy to let you take your time deciding from their extensive menu of deserts, pastries, and loaves which could take awhile. I am a sticky bun connoisseur and this is one of the very best! BUT not to be taken for granted are all the bread options and the brown butter shortbread cookies. Ambience is casual, clean, and relaxing with old recordings of American Billboard's Top Ten Ten playing on the speakers. This cafe and bakery made my stay in Seattle all the better so I brought a few items home with me!
