Mad Dogs & Englishmen

"Mad Dogs & Englishmen isn't exactly new—the previous iteration down the street opened in 1991—but this new standalone space is bigger and better with a proper English pub style. Inside is a warren of small rooms, along with a bar and a large conservatory that opens up on nice days. In classic style, the walls are appropriately loaded with all manner of British paraphernalia, and the food follows suit, with a litany of traditional offerings including a weekly Sunday roast. Tuck into a puff pastry-wrapped sausage with a tangy curry-Dijon mayo. Shepherd's pie is a must in any pub, but here it's made with tender lamb. Topped with mashed potatoes and finished with breadcrumbs, it's a solid if slightly unique take on a classic." - Michelin Inspector

One of the pleasures of a great restaurant is that beyond the food, the atmosphere and decor. A transport you to another place. That’s how we felt when we had the opportunity to have brunch at Mad dogs in Englishman. Located in a newer building, they have all the trappings of a proper English pub. The entry is stone, and upon walking in you see a multitude of photos, paintings, album covers, and more that remind you of England. If you’re lucky enough to be here on a Sunday, expect to see F1 racing, and I’m certain that other times of the week they have proper English football. Take your time and wander through the inside area, and take in all of the photos and the stories behind them. One of my favorite pictures of all times located in the bar area, of Saint Paul’s Cathedral surviving a massive fire bombing ray during World War II. The brunch menu was small, but packed with flavor. My wife and I both enjoy the omelette and had some iced coffee. After all, it’s summer in Florida. The rest of the menu looks fantastic, and be sure to get here for proper Sunday roast. It looks like they had a nice selection of beers and other drinks. Staff is friendly and accommodating. They know how to treat a guest and make them feel welcome. Can’t wait to come back here in a few weeks.

My brother and I went here on a rainy Thursday afternoon. The really reminded me of an English pub, and the decor was super interesting! The staff was polite, patient, and informative when we mentioned it was our first time. The food was really good, but I would heavily recommend pairing with any type of alcohol. It's a bit salty (pub food, so duh) if you just drink water. Fish and chips were one of the best I've had! The fish was crispy outside with hot, flaky, and moist inside. They even had an option of malt vinger bottle at your table.

The brunch is amazing! All of their food options sound good and we’ve been able to try quite a few. So happy to have this restaurant in our neighborhood! Drinks are made very well. I’ve had mimosas, espresso martinis and even the skinny margarita they made me was so good! The omelet is one of my favorite items to order for brunch. We also like the Pub Club. It’s large so you can def share that. Also highly recommend making reservations because it can get busy.

This was my first visit here. Love the atmosphere and the story behind the theme. We didn’t eat this visit just hung out. Had a great time getting to know the owner Rick and the bartenders. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming and I love how many people appeared to be regulars. I could also sense that the staff really appreciated and cared about the owner. I always appreciate a good leader which makes me want to support this establishment even more. You should definitely go.

Stunning ambiance and design—10/10. The space is beautifully curated and spacious, but the food doesn’t match the setting. The fried fish is excellent with a sizable portion but please give us more tartar sauce (runs out after one piece of fish). The chips/fries lack seasoning (5/10). The Shepherd’s Pie is mostly potatoes with very little meat and a watery base (5/10). Fair pricing, but the food needs improvement to reach its full potential. The service was great. To be fair - this place went from a “hole in the wall,” to a swanky restaurant. Maybe we need to give them some time? We’ve been here twice. Same opinion each time. Multiple dishes.

As a new resident in the neighborhood, I am beyond delighted by this local haunt! The hostess trio, and Rolando & Jeremy collectively manifested the best venue first-impression with impeccable, personalized service, and a scrumptious surprise dessert. The atmosphere and ambiance were amazing; and the food is top notch. The stuffed peppadews were peppadewlicious, and the steak and chips landed perfectly in temperature and taste. Thank you, and see you soon!

I recently ate at the NEW Mad Dogs and Englishmen. Here is what I thought. Atmosphere: The new Mad Dogs and Englishmen is ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS. I was absolutely stunned by the new restaurant. It feels like you walked into someone’s home and it’s been designed to be restaurant. It has a beautiful bar, outdoor eating space, a cozy reading room, and dining spaces. They did have a small outdoor seating space which was beautiful, but I didn’t see any easy way to allow your dogs into the outdoor space. I’m just curious if you’re allowed to bring your dogs, because the old location was pet friendly. Restrooms: They had 5 unisex single use bathrooms. They were nice and clean. They and some odd music playing in the restroom though. It sounded liked Queen Elizabeth giving a speech. Service: Our server Abby was very friendly. All the servers we encountered were friendly. The service was quick and professional. Food: The food was really good. I liked how they had a small menu, but they still had a variety of options to choose from. They stuck with traditional British meals but also included a few ethnic dishes, because if you go to England you can easily find a variety of cuisines there. I tried their ‘Midday Sun’ drink and it was really good, a perfect spring/summer drink. It was refreshing and light. We tried their ‘Whipped Feta’ small plate as an appetizer. I really loved it, it was the perfect amount to share between 3 people. The feta was sweet and spicy. For my entree, I ordered their ‘Mushroom & Leek Pie’ which was packed with flavor and I loved it. It was definitely on the heavier side for an entree. Everyone else enjoyed their meals at our table. We tried their ‘Apple Crumble’ with ice cream for dessert, it was good not my favorite though. I would’ve liked to see more traditional British desserts on the menu. Overall, the NEW Mad Dogs and Englishmen is a great spot for lunch or dinner. I’d love to see if they have a brunch or happy hour. It’s beautiful space inside and out! Instagram: @living.with.reg

Simply Smashing! Having lived in England for several years, I was pleasantly surprised by how well Mad Dogs and Englishman captures the spirit of the old country. The restaurant layout is spacious yet divided into distinct rooms, each reminiscent of the grand mansions of the English countryside. The decor is a seamless blend of antique charm and modern British touches, making you feel like you’ve stepped into a carefully curated homage to England. Every detail is thoughtfully considered, creating a truly unique ambiance. The food and service are exceptional. I tried the fish and chips, and it was simply perfect—a true nod to traditional British fare. Whether you’re planning a lunch, dinner, or a leisurely afternoon, I highly recommend this restaurant for its blend of modern flair and classic English heritage.

Yelp
The new location is very nice. We sat outside in the back side courtyard. The chairs are a bit uncomfortable. Service was great. Food was good.

Yelp
What's there not to love about a place that can master a traditional fish n chips. I have tried the fish n chips from pretty much all over the Tampa Bay Area and these are by far my favorite. The fish itself has such a great flavor and a good breading to fish ratio without feeling like it's drenched in oil. Their fries are also delicious. If you're in the mood you MUST go here

Yelp
We were recommended to come here by family friends and I think this is a great local gem. To start, the outside of the restaurant is a little unassuming, but when you walk in, it is a very well put together bar and dinning area. Everything is very clean and beautifully matched the English pub theme. There is also outdoor seating for cooler nights. I ordered the Mad Dog Salad with spiced chicken added on. It was absolutely delicious. There wasn't a lot of ingredients in the salad, so each little piece got to stand out in its own way and it turned out amazing. You can definitely taste the quality in the ingredients as well. The mixed greens were nice and fresh, plus the chicken was not dry at all. And the vinaigrette was just stunning with the spiced pecans and tang from the cheese. The flavors all paired perfectly together and just made the salad really delicious overall. The chicken added on was just the right size to be cut up and added into the salad (not too big or too small). We also got the pretzel appetizer, which was absolutely huge. Overall it came out warm and perfectly buttered and perfectly soft. And the cheese was very yummy with the pretzel; not any hint of fake cheese flavor anywhere near here. The service here was also pretty good. We were seated immediately, food was brought out quickly and served warm, and our waiter was very kind. This is a great local restaurant! I will definitely be back if we are in the area again.

Yelp
This place was fine. Not terrible or great. We were a party of 8 and the service was better than expected from a pub type venue. Their menu was limited. The beer selection was poor. I expected to get my fav English beer (Brewdog). Parking is treacherous but expected considering the quaint old towne atmosphere. Food was ok. My Guinness Beef Stew was lukewarm and the 3-point bread was burnt on the bottom. My friends got fish & chips - and we're not disappointed.

Yelp
Great food! I miss Hugo at the old bar. He was great! Not the same without him. The new location is beautiful and nothing like the old pub.

Yelp
Great spot in south Tampa Hyde park area. Pet friendly and lovely outside seating area. Service was spectacular!! Each time we visited the staff was so friendly and welcoming. We really enjoyed having something different. The shepherds pie is nothing to mess with wow!! Great beer selection to say the least and cool English UK vibes
google avatar

Yelp
Great Bunch Spot! I had the crab Benny & it was delicious. Highly recommend. Reasonably priced drinks, full bar. This place is extremely dog friendly, they even have little meals you can order for them. Perfect place to sit on the patio with your dogs and enjoy a beautiful Sunday afternoon with a mimosa. Mr. Morley, the owner, is a Brit himself so their food is spot on with the English them. They have been open for over 30 years which is a good indicator they are doing something right.

Yelp
This place is doing something right because they've been in business for a bit over 30 years and they've got a huge following. I've been coming here since they opened. And since then I've been ordering their famous Mad Dogs Salad, typically with Salmon, ever since. It's fantastic, IMO! Last night I ventured out of my box and ordered the special, a shrimp curry, along with 6 other friends ! It was delicious! We all loved it and would order it again ! Another ordered the shepherd's pie . She raved about the dish ! Atmosphere is very chic pub cool. Check out my photo. Our server was on top of it ! Manager checked in several times. Oh they have a great outdoor patio with tremendous fans ! Overall a 4 star experience each time .

Yelp
Posting this review on behalf of my pup...she asked me to. She just loves this place! All of the employees are always so nice to us! We love the chill ambience, it's the perfect spot to sip some drinks and enjoy some yummy food. The bistro-type tables and the patio make me feel like I'm in Europe. Just close one eye and pretend you're not sitting on the side of Macdill. The apps are all great, but I'm partial to the baked brie. The warm naan and honey just take it over the top! I usually get the pub burger and truffle fries, classic and they always hit. My partner usually switches things up. Some notable favorites are the NY strip, pan seared salmon and fish & chips. My dog loves the fresh water she's always served as soon as she sits down. I haven't tried it myself, but she had glowing reviews about the doggy burger.

Yelp
This was my second time here and happy to say it's still a 5 in my book! We arrived around 11 on Saturday and the outside patio was pretty full with people. Luckily, we were still able to be seated quite quickly. Our waitress was quick to greet us and she was pretty prompt with requests. Their brunch menu has quite a variety of choices- from tradition English breakfast meals and lunches to salads for a healthier option. The only note; it would have been nice to see a beer menu or hear what was on tap. Unsure if there was a menu but the only drink menu we were given was for wine... I had the full English breakfast (minus mushrooms). This definitely reminded me of meals I used to have back in England. Delicious! My finance had the fish and chips- he was very impressed with the size of the meal. Overall, very happy with our experience and will be back! (PS- they are dog friendly!)

Yelp
First time trying Mad Dogs and we sat outside on their covered patio. Service was a bit slow, but our waiter was very apologetic and friendly. I ordered the steak sandwich -- caramelized onions and the cheese sauce it came with were phenomenal. Sweet potato fries were perfect. Wonderful food and fun atmosphere.
google avatar

Deborah S.

Yelp
I ate there a few nights ago for the first time. I went with a large group and was impressed that we were seated and served quickly (we did have reservations.). The food was very good. I tried the shepherds pie and several others had fish and chips. I certainly will be back to this very cool place.

Yelp
The workers here are quite literally the slowest and worst I've ever seen. Old smelly restaurant with terrible service

Barbara Q.

Yelp
Everything is great. May the new Maddogs be as good as this one. We will miss this little pub!! Thank you for the memories over the years...you will never be forgotten!!!

Yelp
A staple in South Tampa, great food and atmosphere. Staff is amazing, a must visit in South Tampa.

Yelp
Reservations need to a little help with indoor or outdoor in a cold day. Been waiting 25 years to come back. Had a reservation and only outside available on an oddly cold day. Sad to miss it.
google avatar

Giselle O.

Yelp
Love this place!!!! Their fish and chips are so bomb and everytime we come here we are never disappointed with the food. Our waitresses are always so kind and happy to answer any questions we have.
google avatar

Yelp
Had dinner here again for the first time in a while and was shocked to see the prices. We sat outside and our server was really great. The food was pretty good but pretty expensive. Cool spot and dog friendly.

Mario M.

Yelp
Fish and chips to Shepherd's pie, and great libations. Really enjoy all if the pictures that cover the walls. Friendly owner and staff. We go often. Also dog Friendly...Really like that.

Yelp
A good Guinness is usually a good start for any British restaurant. This location is no exception. They have a great pour with the head rising to the top, as it should. The fish and chips were an usual take, it was good but not great. The fish was a weird cut of the typical cod fillet, more of a grilled or baked type cut - maybe they forgot to trim it. The batter was undone pretty quickly and was a bit greasier than I expect from fish and chips. Fish and chips is usually my barometer for any English restaurant. Will not make it out of my way to come here again.

Yelp
I was really excited about this place. I wanted to find a local English pub (as opposed to the one at the mall). Unfortunately, my hopes were too high. It's got a great vibe for a drink, but I won't come back here for food. I got the meatloaf which was recommended to me and it was really disappointing and flavorless. It's worth noting that I really love meatloaf, even from Boston Market. This meatloaf just tasted like beef - it wasn't dry, just so bland. The broccolini it came with was overcooked, the gravy (which could have saved it) lacked flavor as well and was just salty. The only thing good on the plate was the mashed potatoes. My husband ordered a burger which admittedly deserves at least 3 stars. It was pretty good; also the fries were spot on. As my husband said, "at least they have a great starch program." The pretzel we had as an appetizer was good, the cheese sauce it's served with had a really great flavor but was very grainy/floury.

Yelp
Excellent customer service great food very nice ambience, i love the patio , fish and chips and eggs Benedict, everything it's delicious, with an European relaxing vibe . Family oriented, kids and dog friendly ,they even serve food for your doggie! Definitely a coming back customer here ! It's walking distance from bayshore perfect for a nice walk and cold beer after ! The servers very polite and friendly . They made the experience even better showing us the dinner menu ! We must come back for dinner now! Our dog had a very nice grilled chicken breast. We sat outside.
google avatar

James D.

Yelp
One of our favorite neighborhood restaurants. We love the menu - Fish and Chips, Scotch Eggs, Shepherd's pie. Good English fare. And of course Guinness and Smithwick's on tap. Lots of other good things too.
google avatar

Yelp
Mad Dogs is a fun locals' spot with good food, proper pints and friendly staff and regulars! A local recommended this place to me while I was on a business trip. They have a small outside bar and seating area that is more like a front porch at your buddies house. The inside has several tables and another bar area. I sat at the the inside bar where you get full service and menu. They have a couple tvs and when the bar tender/manager saw me watching a game on my phone he changed the channel for me without asking. The beer tap offering is up to snuff with a few English pints of which to choose. Their menu has several English, Irish and American choices. I chose the fish and chips (pic attached). It was perfect. The fish was hot, crispy and delicious. The amount of hand it fries was ridiculous but they were salted well and hot. Everyone knew each other and they made me feel welcomed. It was such a good experience I'll be back to try the burger soon!

Yelp
Great neighborhood hang out. Food and beverages are always on point. And Jerry is an awesome bartender.

Yelp
It has been at least ten years since I last visited, and I feel like this place has remained exactly the same, frozen in time. When our original dinner plans fell through, my friend and I decided to eat dinner here on their front patio. It was a bit warm, even though a few fans were on, and flies were also a minor issue, but altogether it was fine. Our server was prompt and efficient, and I had my snakebite in front of me (lager and cider combo) very quickly. I ordered the snapper dinner special for my meal. I though it was okay, but very bland, like no seasoning whatsoever had been used on any part of the meal. The bigger problem was that my friend's curry dish was served cold, so because I waited for them to make her a new one, my dish was lukewarm by the time I ate it. I think next time I'll either just go for the drinks, or stick with items I know they do well like shepherd's pie or fish and chips.

Jerry W.

Yelp
Wanted to like this place, and would have rather given this feedback in person (if anyone had asked after we got our food). The water tastes like mildew. Three of our party remarked on it independently. Please clean your hoses. I ordered the crab cakes which are one of the best reviewed items on here. I love crab cakes. These were probably the worst I've had because I couldn't taste the crab over the red pepper. That defeats the purpose of expensive crab meat. Other things I tried: The pretzel was AWESOME, the fish n' chips were good (though I do expect a bit better from an English restaurant in a coastal region), and the hamburger was bleh but what do you expect from ordering a burger at an English place. The service was mostly good aside from the fact that nobody asked how the food was (after we actually had a chance to try it) and despite the fact that I obviously left an entire crab cake on the plate nobody asked about it or even offered me a box. When that much food is left on the plate, you should ask. Again, I would have preferred to politely give this feedback in person rather than leave a 3-star review on Yelp, if someone had even come within earshot of me to create the chance.

Whitney G.

Yelp
The food was delicious! I had the gator bites (very filling) and a burger/fries. I ordered to go and they were friendly and timely.
google avatar

Alexis N.

Yelp
I just moved into the neighborhood and family came into town for the holidays. I can walk to mad dogs so we decided to go here for lunch on Christmas Eve. We were able to easily find a table out on the porch for 4 of us and a dog. They have a good beer menu. I ordered the wicked weed beer and it was delicious. Between the table we ordered the burger, chicken wrap, and salad with chicken. They definitely won us over with the fries selection (from what I remember they had several!) and we all chose sweet potato fries. The chicken in the wrap was so well seasoned and perfect chucks of white meat. Everything was great. There was so much food we definitely couldn't finish all the fries between us! I will definitely be walking back over here to check out the dinner menu.

Ray C.

Yelp
My wife and I recently had lunch and the food again was very good. I usually order the fish and chips which is enough for 1 1/2 people. It is always tasty to me. My wife had their special salad also very tasty. This restaurant is one of the best friendly and consistent ones in South Tampa.. good beer and wine also. Don't pass this up on South McDill 4 stars
google avatar

Tiana M.

Yelp
the service was amazing . I came in not knowing that they were closing the kitchen super soon however they still took our order thankfully since we were starving and out of ideas on what to eat since everything was closed. The ambiance was super homey and friendly. Their food was pretty good (: I ordered fish and chips and the portion of fish was huge . Thank you to our amazing servers and cooks that night

Sasha G.

Yelp
Great ambiance, service and food. Everything we ordered was delicious - fish and chips, shepherds pie and the special.
google avatar

Jim M.

Yelp
Not sure what the hype is on this place. Went last week and was overcharged on my credit card which I'm working with them to get corrected. I had the most simple food ever with the chicken sandwich and a side salad. Side salad didn't have enough dressing on it and the chicken sandwich was like eating leather. It was literally the toughest piece of chicken I think I've ever eaten. Gross! The vibe and patio are cool, but I definitely won't be returning.
google avatar

Katrina M.

Yelp
This is only my second time here, but I'm impressed again! Staff is nice, drinks are good. Although, I wish they offered liquor and not just wine, but it doesnt take away from anything. The decor and atmosphere is unique. My favorite menu items are probably the thai curry shrimp, and crab cakes.
google avatar

Teri S.

Yelp
The food is yummy but the time it takes to get it is waaay too long. ________________________________________
google avatar

Bob C.

Yelp
Mad Dog's is not only where you get great fish and chips. Given I am a hearty eater, so take me serious that the portions are the best in Tampa Bay. Never a bad order. Make sure you ask for additional tartar sauce because the cod portions out manage the tartar sauce! Its local friends big time and well-nourished huge smiles by the staff.
google avatar

Lorri D.

Yelp
Stoped by on our bikes he other day. If you didn't know the place was there already it is easy to drive past day after day without even noticing it, but please take the time to find it and stop by. The food and the service was fantastic! We sat outside and had lovely shade from the the trees and the umbrellas. If you have a pouch, bring it along, they are pet friendly on the patio. One word of caution, watch out for Rocky (My made up name for him) the squirrel, he is not afraid of you and he wants your food!

Kory S.

Yelp
Always a great place to stop and even just grab a beer. The wait staff is great and the outside seating is nice.
google avatar

Sarah E.

Yelp
Really cute spot with nice outdoor seating that stays cool even in the sun because of the ample shade. Fish and chips were great, the mad dog salad was very good as well. But the miso wings were AMAZING. We brought our pup and enjoyed a nice day on the patio.
google avatar

Rashonna T.

Yelp
Driving around and happened upon this place for a quick bite. Excellent burger and beer! Valerie's service was terrific!
google avatar

Kody A.

Yelp
If I were ever to open a pub, Mad Dogs would definitely be one of the inspirations. A quirky, but, fun establishment in South Tampa that serves great pub fare. The burger I had was really good and the fries were fresh. I enjoyed the atmosphere and staff - a low-key vibe with minimal action which is a nice change of pace for the area. I loved the simplicity of the decor highlighting the 'mad dogs' over the past few decades.
google avatar

Monica A.

Yelp
Great food and consistency. We love the burgers and fish and chips here. However, in the to-go containers, you get half filled tarter and their tarter is amazing. I always order extra on my to-go orders but they always forget. The burgers are large, flavorful, and fresh. Mad dogs is one of our go-to's as a family!

David E.

Yelp
Love the place.... But slow kitchen and frustratingly inconsistent . $25 for salmon, dropped rice and order double sautéed spinach.... Who would allow this, see picture, yes that is the $25 meal, left the kitchen for $25. Roving manager was alerted and quickly resolved...but who would let this leave a kitchen... Will keep going back and hope they are able to fix some things... Would still recommend place!
google avatar

Mari M.

Yelp
Authentic British restaurant in a pretty part of Tampa. Loved the artwork and the vibe. Friendly service. I would recommend especially if you're hankering for some British dishes like bangers and mash or Scotch eggs.
google avatar

Brad S.

Yelp
This neighborhood staple has been around for decades, but its better than ever, based on my recent visit. Packed on a Saturday night, you notice that neighbors really like it here, or it wouldnt have survived this long when others come and go. The front patio is charming, and so is the rustic interior. Covid wise, theyre doing a good job. There were outdoor tables far away for those with great concerns. They were screening Dr Zhivago on a big outdoor wall, adding to the cool ambiance. My grouper bites app was delicious and very fresh paired with a tasty remoulade. I enjoyed a couple of house cabernets. The menu is solid and no one can argue with the drinks. Restrooms are clean and parking is surprisingly ample including around back.
google avatar

Sue S.

Yelp
My favorite place for fish and chips. But I miss my coleslaw. Service is spotty. I went for breakfast, asked if my omelette could be soft, she would ask. My omelette wasn't soft and she wasn't concerned in the least. Pub interior.

Tom K.

Yelp
The service and food are VERY average but the patio is a nice setting for drinks and apps. I ordered a steak sandwich. The steak was cooked medium, as I ordered, but it was cold and the cheese was not melted. The owner was there and oftentimes is having dinner at Mad dogs. His service was prompt and he seemed to enjoy his fish and chips, but he is oblivious to how his customers are treated. Overall, VERY DISAPPOINTING, AGAIN and AGAIN. This place is successful despite itself. Hopefully, someone who understands restaurants and services can fix this place. Selfishly, I'd like to eat here more often.

Debbie S.

Yelp
Went on Sunday and SO HAPPY they have reopened brunch on the weekends! Limited menu and no fish and chips for my boyfriend....but breakfast was great! We ate outside and enjoyed the dog friendly patio.

Bill C.

Yelp
great pub atmosphere, friendly wait staff, delicious food. the outdoor patio is a fun open air environment.
