Ask a local in NOLA where can you get a good Po-Boy, and they will most likely say Mahony's. Emeril & Guy Fieri agree. In fact, the original location in the Garden District is a Triple D spot. The restaurant is a cute little cottage on Magazine Street with indoor & outdoor seating. Their home-style comfort food is made with fresh local ingredients, and they have a variety of classic dishes on the menu. However, we were here for the Po-Boys.
The Po-Boy was created in New Orleans in the 1920s. A true Po-Boy is served on Leidenheimer bread, which is made locally. This particular French bread is made with less flour and more water, which results in a lighter, fluffier bread that is less chewy with a crispy crust. And, you should always order your Po-Boy dressed (lettuce, tomato, pickle, & mayo).
Ace was our server, and he was fantastic! OMG, we loved him! He had the best personality, and I wanted to take him everywhere with us. All the staff were friendly but Ace definitely deserves Server of the Year award!
We ordered onion rings and cocktails to start. Mahony's onion rings were named MSN Lifestyle's 10 Best Onion Rings in America and I agree. The seasoning was perfect. They were addicting. Our cocktails were also tasty. I had the 75 Twist, Jessica P the Nawlin's Lemonade, & Graciela P an ice-cold IPA.
We also got the Fried Green Pimento Cheese BLT Po-Boy & the Grilled Shrimp Remi Po-Boy. Let me tell ya! Theses 'Boys were loaded, stacked, and did not disappoint. The fried green tomatoes were a delightful surprise and the remoulade on the Grilled Shrimp Remi added the right amount of spiciness.
Mahony's has a second location in the French Quarter. It's not as charming as the original, and you won't find Ace there but the food is just as good.
