10 Tableside Preparations In NYC, Ranked From Most Impressive To Least Necessary

"The Show: Poularde Homardine, Sauce Nantua In 2024, Martha Stewart posted about her dinner at Maison Barnes: a lobster, stuffed into a chicken. The internet went crazy. Obviously, we had to try it. Our chobster looked a little bit different from Martha’s though—it was a whole chicken, dressed in lobster-shaped armor. The golden appendages are whisked away, leaving the naked chicken, which is then carved tableside. A lobster head is extracted from its cavity, pressed for a few drops of juice, and a bisque is whisked is in front of you—but mostly this is just a jarring chicken carving. If you ever end up at this Daniel Boulud restaurant on the Upper East Side, order something less exciting." - willa moore, molly fitzpatrick, sonal shah, will hartman

NYC’s New Restaurant Openings

"The Daniel Boulud team has another restaurant on the Upper East Side, and it shares an address with Café Boulud. Maison Barnes is a larger space with lots of art deco design details in its various dining rooms and lounges (three in total), and you can expect Daniel Boulud’s seasonal, fancy French food with a focus on seasonality, like an asparagus and prosecco risotto." - will hartman

Maison Barnes Review - Upper East Side - New York - The Infatuation

"Welcome to Maison Barnes, home of the Chobster." That’s how Daniel Boulud describes the signature dish at this Upper East Side restaurant, where a chicken-lobster hybrid for two will run you $250. Over the course of an arduously long dinner in the pleasantly posh dining room (located next to Cafe Boulud), only one or two Poularde Homardines are likely to sail past. Perhaps it’s not quite the home of the Chobster yet—and that’s for the best. The dish is an over-the-top stunt that disrupts the equilibrium of an otherwise snoozy dinner, where the music is about three clicks too low, allowing you to overhear women in pearls discussing their purchase of a vineyard in France. (Appropriate, given the restaurant has ties to French real estate company Barnes.) The short menu has some good, delicately plated food, but it all pales in the shadow of that Chobster. If you happen to have an Upper East Side-dwelling aunt who wants to spend all her wealth, Maison Barnes will do fine for a casually fancy dinner. But if you’d like to experience what this chef does best, just go to Daniel instead. photo credit: Bill Milne photo credit: Maison Barnes photo credit: Bill Milne photo credit: Bill Milne Food Rundown Poularde Homardine, Sauce Nantua The Chobster’s true name. Now you know, so don’t order it by accident. But if you’ve been influenced by Martha Stewart’s viral Chobster post and must know more, here’s what to expect. A whole chicken arrives at your table wearing lobster armor. The golden appendages are whisked away, leaving the naked chicken, which is then carved tableside. A lobster head is extracted from its cavity, pressed for a few drops of juice, and a bisque whisked in front of you. The chicken is tender; the lobster perfectly poached, and, when it’s eventually served, you’ll get about three slices of each on your plate. If you end up here, order something less exciting. photo credit: Maison Barnes Asperges Blanches Sauce Mousseline Thick spears of white asparagus, with crunchy hazelnuts and broken pieces of puff pastry, swimming in a light, hollandaise-adjacent sauce. Tastes very French. As it should. But it won’t change your life. Salade Printaniére An absolutely inoffensive salad. Something that might become a part of your regular repertoire if you were an Upper East Side socialite. Gateau au Chocolat Amer Sabayon Espresso This wedge of rich chocolate cake is delicious, and about the size of two slices. Enjoy it with an after-dinner coffee. Or maybe skip dinner and proceed here directly." - Willa Moore

We went to Café Boulud for restaurant week and got seated in the Maison Barnes dining room. Honestly, the space was beautiful elegant without feeling stiff, and really comfortable to sit and talk in. The service was great smooth, polite, and attentive without hovering. Everyone was friendly. As for the food, every dish we tried was excellent. Nicely portioned, beautifully presented, and most importantly, it tasted really good. Nothing felt like it was “dumbed down” for Restaurant Week. It still felt like fine dining just accessible. Overall, a really good experience. I’d come back even outside of Restaurant Week.

A beautifully decorated place for a special occasion, worth dressing up for. Polite service but I could not understand half of descriptions our waiter gave us, need to work on the dishes presentation. The food was amazingly plated. Beef with pan seared foie gras was super juicy, the cacao foie gras appetizer was amazing, but mu husband's arctic char was just ok but salmon roe made it too salty. His carrot tart appetizer was quite unique and unconventional. The Montblanc desert was unexpectedly big but overly sweet, while a cheese plate had a generous selection of cheeses so was a good value.

My family and I always have a great experience when dining at Daniel’s, so we wanted to try Maison Barnes for father’s day. Unfortunately, we were thoroughly disappointed. While the food delivered a delightful culinary experience, the service fell noticeably short. The sommelier, in particular, felt rude and cold. None of the staff who served us introduced themselves or made any effort to be warm or personable. It was a real shame… the food deserves better service to match. I would find it hard to want to return to Maison Barnes, because there are many other fine dining restaurants in NYC that offer both a wonderful menu and a pleasurable atmosphere.

Google
friendly service, lovely ambiance, beautiful decor, and excellent food. I got the scallops as my starter and they were, hands down, the BEST scallops i have ever had in my entire life. They melted in my mouth and had the most perfect caramelized sear on them which added so much depth and flavor to the scallops. For the main I got the short rib and NY strip. I ordered it to be cooked medium and i feel that it came a bit more raw than that. For dessert, i ordered the molten chocolate cake for dessert. Truly outstanding dinner service. Wish I came for the thursday evening piano as well.

My evaluation of Madison Barnes: my recommendation going forward is FORGET IT! STRIKE IT OFF YOUR LIST! I don’t understand how these restaurants get away with it. OUTRAGEOUS! The atmosphere is pleasant and comfortable. Service, borderline acceptable. God forbid staff be advised to smile, be patient, don’t rush the customer, and say “thank you." One would think these were basic elements that would come intuitively. Servicing, even in expensive restaurants, is no longer a PROFESSION, it’s just a JOB. So disappointing. And training seems to be a word no longer in the dictionary. The same for pride in doing a good job.

A must try! Once you enter the restaurant, you are transported into Les Jardins des Tuileries in Paris. Cozy atmosphere where you feel like at home, losing the sense of time. The personnel is top notch and the food is absolutely amazing. A pure expression of perfection. Chef Romain has a talent for execution: beauty and taste. The wine list is very interesting too where you have a broad choice of selection at all prices. You can wonder further at the bar to continue your perfect evening. Bon appétit!

As a lot of other comments mentioned, the service fell extremely subpar and made this the least attractive Chef Boulud’s restaurant. The servers seem genuinely annoyed we were there, constantly ignoring our requests and presence or even blank out saying ‘No’. A few of my questions left unaddressed, which was intentional. They made zero effort of offering an accommodating service in a luxury place, better service was received in lower priced restaurants. The food is mediocre at its finest, nothing too special to celebrate. The desserts were over-engineered and overly sweet.

Google
At last, a restaurant in New York that truly appreciates the significance of tablecloths and elegant presentation—bravo! While many establishments attempt to justify the absence of table linens by insisting that the quality of the food remains unaffected, Maison Barnes recognizes that a refined ambiance is integral to a memorable dining experience. One suggestion for further enhancing the table setting would be to serve water in stemmed glasses. Traditionally, water is presented in a larger stemmed glass than the one used for wine. Unfortunately, Maison Barnes currently serves water in tumblers, which slightly detracts from the overall sophistication of the table arrangement.

Yelp
We were so excited to finally try this place. The restaurant looks lovely from all the photos. We made a 5pm reservation for 3 of us. The first impression, and disappointment happened within 5 minutes of being seated. We were the first guests to arrive. They took us to the nice, warm part of the dining room and proceeded to seat us in the front corner behind a pillar, near the piano. Looking at the empty restaurant, I asked if we could sit at one of the many tables in the interior of the room. The hostess indicated that all the tables were reserved and most of the tables were for two; those tables are all squares so could easily be moved together to make room for a table of 3. Remember, we had a reservation too. I sat at the table trying to enjoy dinner, but I was distracted since we were so clearly seated at the worst table. We spent 2.5 hours having dinner and most of the tables remained empty. Either none of the guests showed up or they had fibbed about all the tables being reserved. Also, the table we sat at was so dimly lit, that the pictures of the food we took didn't even come out since it was so dark. Please don't have guests sit at that table when the rest of the room is filled with maybe 3 other families. Overall, the food was meh even though VERY sophisticated. The best part was the baguette and butter. I could not wait to finish. We have tried 3 different Boulud restaurants and we have been underwhelmed by all of them. This dinner at Maison Barnes was a waste of $600 and we will never return.

Yelp
Overall, a disappointing experience. The food was mediocre--the sea bass was under-seasoned and lacked flavor. Desserts were underwhelming, particularly the Monton cake and caramel pastry. The service was unprofessional and slow; our waiter was most of the time nowhere to be found, as far as the menu, he just handed us the menu with no recommendations to be provided. The manager was preoccupied with another complaint, so I did not even start to address ours. Unfortunately, the entire experience fell short of expectations.

Yelp
Stumbled into this gorgeous bar - incredible vibe with tropical wallpaper, velvet furniture, and jazz music. Cocktails are strong and well made. We will be back!

Yelp
Stopped in for an early dinner before a show. Just excellence end to end. Beautiful dining room and outstanding dinner. We went all in for all courses and was totally worth it. The squab was a standout dish and my wife was excited to have a very good peach Melba. Perfect house martini and strong post dinner drink menu as wel

Yelp
Went here for dinner with my family . Everyone was really kind and accommodating but unfortunately the food was underwhelming :(

Yelp
We stumbled upon this gorgeous bar just off the avenue while walking down Park last night. I had read about the Chobster in the Post. We ordered martinis at the bar; they were exquisite -- vessel and liquid. The food looked good although we did not eat. Daniel Boulud was there! Staff are lovely and service impeccable.
