"Welcome to Maison Barnes, home of the Chobster." That’s how Daniel Boulud describes the signature dish at this Upper East Side restaurant, where a chicken-lobster hybrid for two will run you $250. Over the course of an arduously long dinner in the pleasantly posh dining room (located next to Cafe Boulud), only one or two Poularde Homardines are likely to sail past. Perhaps it’s not quite the home of the Chobster yet—and that’s for the best. The dish is an over-the-top stunt that disrupts the equilibrium of an otherwise snoozy dinner, where the music is about three clicks too low, allowing you to overhear women in pearls discussing their purchase of a vineyard in France. (Appropriate, given the restaurant has ties to French real estate company Barnes.) The short menu has some good, delicately plated food, but it all pales in the shadow of that Chobster. ⭐️⭐️ (2/5) It was my first time visiting this restaurant, and thankfully none of the dishes disappointed. I highly recommend the black cod, foie gras, and mushroom soup — there are plenty of great options, and the food and drinks were truly enjoyable. However, the service was a major letdown. The waitress who took our order had a very unpleasant attitude from the moment we sat down. She kept rushing us to order and looked visibly impatient throughout the entire process. Even when we were paying the bill, she continued to rush us, which made us feel disrespected and unwelcome. We honestly had no idea why we were treated this way. Despite the good food, the service experience was disappointing enough that we wouldn’t feel comfortable recommending this place to our friends.

We went to Café Boulud for restaurant week and got seated in the Maison Barnes dining room. Honestly, the space was beautiful elegant without feeling stiff, and really comfortable to sit and talk in. The service was great smooth, polite, and attentive without hovering. Everyone was friendly. As for the food, every dish we tried was excellent. Nicely portioned, beautifully presented, and most importantly, it tasted really good. Nothing felt like it was “dumbed down” for Restaurant Week. It still felt like fine dining just accessible. Overall, a really good experience. I’d come back even outside of Restaurant Week.

Maison Barnes was an incredible dining experience. The room was beautifully appointed, the tables not crowded and the noise level non existant, allowing conversation. The waitstaff was so very on point, welcoming, helpful and unobtrusively attentive. The prix fixe menu is 2, 3 or 4 courses which can be chosen from any of the 4 menu sections and mixed as one desires. We chose 3 courses, initially omitting dessert. Lobster barigoule/squash ravioli/sea bass and Hiramasa/lobster ravioli/artic char. Each dish was beautifully presented. Often I am turned off by the number of ingredients/embellishments in a dish created by less talented chefs. But omg, every ingredient, garni and sauce, everything on the plate was incredibly coherent to the dish here. I am in awe of Boulud's talent. Interacting with the sommelier Victoria was a joyful pleasure. We wanted to extend this incredible meal by adding a 4th course to be shared and had the devils food cake w blackberry sorbet. By the way, months before making our reservation I had some questions about the maison barnes room vrs the cafe room and menu and so I emailed the Boulud reservation site. The next day I received the most gracious, personalized , and helpful responses . Those kind and welcoming replies foretold what our dining experience would be like!

A beautifully decorated place for a special occasion, worth dressing up for. Polite service but I could not understand half of descriptions our waiter gave us, need to work on the dishes presentation. The food was amazingly plated. Beef with pan seared foie gras was super juicy, the cacao foie gras appetizer was amazing, but mu husband's arctic char was just ok but salmon roe made it too salty. His carrot tart appetizer was quite unique and unconventional. The Montblanc desert was unexpectedly big but overly sweet, while a cheese plate had a generous selection of cheeses so was a good value.

Want a great meal? Eat here. I prioritize taste over presentation 7/7 days of the week, but my meal was a 11/10 on taste as well as an 11/10 on presentation. Course 1, main course and dessert — A+. Nike says “Just do it”. For this restaurant, “Just go!”…and enjoy! Salad, Filet and Molten Lava Cake were OUTSTANDING! Thank you.

A must try! Once you enter the restaurant, you are transported into Les Jardins des Tuileries in Paris. Cozy atmosphere where you feel like at home, losing the sense of time. The personnel is top notch and the food is absolutely amazing. A pure expression of perfection. Chef Romain has a talent for execution: beauty and taste. The wine list is very interesting too where you have a broad choice of selection at all prices. You can wonder further at the bar to continue your perfect evening. Bon appétit!

We were so excited to finally try this place. The restaurant looks lovely from all the photos. We made a 5pm reservation for 3 of us. The first impression, and disappointment happened within 5 minutes of being seated. We were the first guests to arrive. They took us to the nice, warm part of the dining room and proceeded to seat us in the front corner behind a pillar, near the piano. Looking at the empty restaurant, I asked if we could sit at one of the many tables in the interior of the room. The hostess indicated that all the tables were reserved and most of the tables were for two; those tables are all squares so could easily be moved together to make room for a table of 3. Remember, we had a reservation too. I sat at the table trying to enjoy dinner, but I was distracted since we were so clearly seated at the worst table. We spent 2.5 hours having dinner and most of the tables remained empty. Either none of the guests showed up or they had fibbed about all the tables being reserved. Also, the table we sat at was so dimly lit, that the pictures of the food we took didn't even come out since it was so dark. Please don't have guests sit at that table when the rest of the room is filled with maybe 3 other families. Overall, the food was meh even though VERY sophisticated. The best part was the baguette and butter. I could not wait to finish. We have tried 3 different Boulud restaurants and we have been underwhelmed by all of them. This dinner at Maison Barnes was a waste of $600 and we will never return.

Overall, a disappointing experience. The food was mediocre--the sea bass was under-seasoned and lacked flavor. Desserts were underwhelming, particularly the Monton cake and caramel pastry. The service was unprofessional and slow; our waiter was most of the time nowhere to be found, as far as the menu, he just handed us the menu with no recommendations to be provided. The manager was preoccupied with another complaint, so I did not even start to address ours. Unfortunately, the entire experience fell short of expectations.

We stumbled upon this gorgeous bar just off the avenue while walking down Park last night. I had read about the Chobster in the Post. We ordered martinis at the bar; they were exquisite -- vessel and liquid. The food looked good although we did not eat. Daniel Boulud was there! Staff are lovely and service impeccable.
