NYC’s New Restaurant Openings - New York - The Infatuation

"In Astoria, Massi’s Sandwiches is from the Somedays Bakery and Chip City team. They make Italian sandwiches on housemade semolina sourdough, like chicken or eggplant parm, but they also have a cubano on the menu. For $20 or $22 depending on the filling, you can get your sandwich sans-bread, chopped up over french fries." - will hartman, willa moore, molly fitzpatrick, sonal shah, bryan kim

‘No Seed Oil’ Restaurants Seize the Moment | Eater

"A sandwich shop in Astoria, Queens that was built around a homemade aesthetic: sourdough baked fresh daily, fries cut in-house, and everything fried in beef tallow. The owners market those production choices heavily on social media and the menu with a “no seed oils” claim meant to signal the use of nonindustrial, premium ingredients and a focus on taste and craft rather than a direct health claim; however, that label can also read as aligning the restaurant with wider wellness or MAHA-adjacent signaling for some diners." - Jaya Saxena

Google
Walked by and the seed oil free on the menu caught my eye. Gave it a try this week and I’ve already been back three times. The owner claims their cheesesteak is the best in Astoria, and honestly, I can’t disagree. Meat Quality is top-notch- you can tell they’re using high quality ribeye. My go-to is The chicken and broccoli rabe sandwich. Cant wait to try that vodka parm sandwich.

Google
Wow, I was blown away by Massi's! I ordered a Philly Cheesesteak with fries and to be honest, it was just as good or better than any cheesesteak I've had in Philly. The bread is made in house and it's perfect! The steak was tender, juicy and the sandwich had plenty of cheese and onions. The fries were amazing too! They have 7 sandwiches on their menu and I plan to try them all eventually. The place is incredibly clean and there's plenty of room and tables to eat in. The staff and owners couldn't have been friendlier, too, which always makes a place special. I can't recommend Massi's enough! Just go!!

Google
I really wanted to enjoy this new place in Astoria! Maybe it was an off night but $14 Chicken tenders were a little over cooked and tasted a bit rough but were homemade. The vodka chicken parm with peso sandwich was much better! Chicken wasn’t as tough and the ingredients all tasted fresh! Going to give this place one more try

Google
Incredibly delicious sandwiches with freshly homemade sourdough bread. Probably the best chicken parm I've ever had. Everything is seed oil free!! Fries are done in beef tallow. Chicken is breaded by them. Honestly, anyone who complains about price to portion ratio is really unreasonable as one sandwich is more than filling. Owner & staff are also very nice. However, in the future I do hope they improve/increase their sauce offerings

Google
First time here for lunch. Not crowded at all, which I prefer. I ordered the chicken parmesan hero combo. The hero was tasty plus the stringy fries also. Staff were friendly and gave recommendations on what to order. Expect to pay anywhere from $10-$20.

Adam

Google
One of the best Philly cheesesteaks I’ve ever had. The bread is baked daily so it’s extra fresh. The chicken parm is also good but nothing is beating that cheesesteak.

Angel G.

Google
The food was delicious and made within 5 minutes, the fries were fantastic and were small, thin, and crunchy. We got the Philly cheese steak that was delicious the bread was fluffy, delicious, the meat was also delicious with the onions and cheese. Would for sure come again to try more items.👍

Google
Absolutely obsessed with this new sandwich spot! Everything is so fresh, and you can really taste the quality in every bite. I love that they’re seed oil free and use beef tallow instead—finally, a place where you can indulge without feeling gross afterward. I’ve tried three of their sandwiches so far, and every single one has blown me away. The Philly cheesesteak is next-level delicious, the vodka Parm sandwich is rich and satisfying, and the eggplant Parm is the perfect option if you want something a little lighter without sacrificing flavor. The fries are out of this world !!! Perfectly crispy, golden, and addicting. You can tell they’re made fresh and fried in something that actually tastes good. Five stars without hesitation. If you’re even remotely thinking about trying this place, do it. You won’t regret it.

Yelp
Love the Philly! Great addition to the area. Can't wait to try all the sandwiches. Oh, and the fry's are next level.

Micah C.

Yelp
I love the Philly! Everything made in house and no seed oil. I'm a big fan and I'll be back for sure.

Nicholas F.

Yelp
great people and environment love the food and service. Lots of nice people owners are great.

Yelp
The sandwiches are massive here! I was a bit hesitant because of the $15 price tag for a single sandwich but each time I've had a sandwich I could not finish it in one sitting. They're basically 2 meals in 1 sandwich. The service is prompt and the inside is clean, though I've only ever had the food to go. Would recommend if you're very hungry for lunch or for splitting up into 2 meals. Just a note that the shop opens at 11:30 and closes at 11pm so they're only open lunch through dinner.

Yelp
Everyone here works hard, but the entire work system is a complete mess, which makes everything take far too long. Their movements overlap too much, and while working, they laugh and talk loudly without wearing masks. They use the same knife that cuts bread to open plastic bags, and even though many people are waiting, they work unbelievably slowly. I only ordered two fries, but because they're so inflexible and insist on processing every order strictly in sequence, I had to wait an unreasonably long time. I think these people really need to work more efficiently and professionally. Food is delicious anyway

Yelp
Ordered: Philly Cheesesteak Combo (~$23): semolina sourdough sandwich with sliced ribeye, cooper cheese, sautéed onions; with French fries and canned soda (Coke Zero) Aya's take: From the teams behind Somedays Bakery and Chip City comes Massi's Sandwiches! They recently opened in Astoria and the menu is pretty simple. They specialize in Italian sandwiches made on their housemade semolina sourdough bread, and I was excited to give it a try! They weren't busy at all yet my order took ~15 minutes to be ready. I wouldn't have minded but the fries were barely warm and the Philly cheesesteak was no longer warm after finishing the first half. The sliced ribeye and cooper cheese are a great combination and the sautéed onions really cuts through a lot of the fat and greasiness. I'm a big fan of the semolina sourdough but I could tell it wasn't the freshest; it was slightly hard and chewy. I love that the French fries are fried in beef tallow but again, I wish they were hot & fresh! They got quite stale and lacked flavor after a while. It's a good one-time try for me; I don't know if I'd go out of my way to come back.

Yelp
They finally opened!! Well, their soft opening and we were able to go in and order something. Although, when we got there it was around 6 ish pm so we were told they ran out of fries, their chicken parm sandwich, their philly sandwhich and more. This didn't deter us , we decided to go with their eggplant parm and meatball sandwich. Once we ordered we just waited like everyone else did. The staff member would call your name once your order has been filled. We saw how busy they were but were able to be very friendly and greeted people as they came in. Once we got our orders we went to our apt (so close by) and opened these bad boys! We saw how the filling was almost falling out of the sandwich but they were strong enough to not break apart. Btw - they make their own bread so it makes sense that they ensure that their bread can handle whatever fillings will be going in between the sandwiches. Anyways - the eggplant parm first - Amazing! There weren't huge chucks where you'll be pulling them out as you take a bite. They were made in such as way that every time you bite into it, you get all the filling in one bite and in every bite. No slipping and sliding. For the meatballs - they are HUGE! in the bread. They were also amazing and while I personally love both, I think I like the meatball more. It was seasoned well, not salty and the meat is tender Also - the meatballs are all beef! I asked! My bf said the bread hurts his teeth but he could just have sensitive and weak teeth lol cause for me I thought it was fine! Only giving it a 4 stars right now cause I'm waiting to try their chicken parm and philly. They are legit right across from where I live so I'm excited for their offical opening. Oh, for one sandwich it's about $17 and while at first you might think it's a lot. Keep in mind, they make their own sourdough bread! That machine cost money! But one sandwich deff will get you full so I think it's worth it! Plus if you get the combo (if available) it'll be like 21 or 22 dollars - not too bad in these day and age. This place for sure is worth going to.

Yelp
I am so happy to have finally walked in to what I thought was a stand up sandwich place but was happy to see they had a nice area in the back to sit and eat. Great staff! I had the chicken parmigiana sandwich that has ala vodka sauce as well as pesto on it. The bread is freshly baked every day. Absolutely delicious!!! My husband had the Philly Cheesesteak with onions, peppers and cheese! Nice and hot! So yummy. We'll be back!!!

Yelp
Massi's had their 1st soft opening a few weeks prior, and we were excited to check out their saniches, particularly the Vodka Chicken Parm and the Grilled Chicken and Broccoli Rabe. Did you know that they make their own sourdough bread? Their Massi's Combo was a good deal, as it comes with a side of french fries (house-cut Idaho potatoes, fried in beef tallow) and a canned soda. Staff were friendly, and the sandwiches were made-to-order. Don't fret if you missed the 1st round, as their 2nd soft opening is scheduled real soon! +housemade sourdough bread +Massi's Combo +friendly staff & service

Yelp
We came here at around 5:45pm for their soft opening and we got the meatball sub and the Italian deli sub. We did want to try the chicks chicken parm and the fries but so much of their inventory had been sold out at that point. If anyone does get them please tell me how they are. The sandwiches on sight looked beautiful; however when peeling the aluminum foil off it's really hard not to get food on your hands - the meatballs are moist and saucy so it makes it pretty messy, but overall each bite out of the toasted bread was very good! I actually liked the Italian deli sub a lot but the majority of my group loved the meatball sub. I would definitely come back here to try out the earlier sold out items along with some extra napkins.

Yelp
Fries are fried in beef tallow. Sooo greasy and doesn't taste good. So heavy and greasy. Ordered the cheesesteak and the chicken parm vodka sauce. Neither had flavor. Like seriously no flavor whatsoever. Bland. Over $20 for a sandwich and $7 for fries. Save your money. Go elsewhere. Astoria has sooo many other better places

Yelp
New sandwich place opened so we decided to give it a try. We got the Philly cheesesteak fries and vodka parm sandwich. Both were pretty good, especially the shoe string fries. The sandwich itself, I think the chicken could've been less dry but still had good flavor and the bun was pretty good. The price is kinda high but at least the food was good. It's definitely something I'd get again. Service was fairly quick and there are places to sit down or just eat out the window.

Yelp
I saw this place on Instagram and the ads for the restaurant look interesting. They was cooking food different than other sandwich shops in the city so I decided to go there for lunch. They use no seed oils and fry their fries in beef tallow like McDonald's used to do. When you walk in, you order your food and then they hand you the food once it's done. The drinks are conveniently placed below you when you order; basic drinks like coke, sprite and water. For the food, I ordered the combo which comes with fries and drink. I will start with the positive. My sandwich was the vodka chicken Parm. The chef only put pesto on half of the sandwich so idk if it was supposed to be that way. The sandwich was big; two big pieces of chicken patties but the bread was small and thin so half the chicken was sticking out. The chicken was a little burnt at the end so not sure if it was supposed to be that way or they had a bad day. The negative is the fries and o boy did these fries suck. Probably one of the worst fries in the city and the crazy part is that you can order these with any sandwich fillings for $20 dollars!!! They was limp, oily and lack of any salt. You can't dip these in ketchup or any sauce because they are so limp and small. I've had better beef tallow fries in other places so there's no excuses. In summary, do not order the fries alone or get the combo. Just get the sandwich and maybe a drink if you want, it will save you a few bucks. Will I come back, yes to the sandwiches and hell no for the fries unless they made a drastic improvement and offer me for free to try

Yelp
I heard that Massi's was havinga soft opening and decided tochevk it out. There was about 10-15 people waiting when I got there, but there was air conditioning in the back bar area (which has tvs showcasing games - looks like fun in the future). Took about maybe 15 minutes for the two sandwiches I ordered- which was great. Massi's makes their own semolina sourdough heroes which you can see baking while you wait. The bread was crunchy and has sesame seeds and just gave these sandwiches another dimension of flavor. Sandwiches 1. Philly cheesecake- so delish!!! The chopped beef has such a nice flavor with the sautéed onions and cooper cheese. 2. Grilled chicken and broccoli rabe - the chicken was moist and flavorful. Along with the garlicky rabe provolone - omg this one is also so good. These flavors taste like a gourmet dish . The rabe was soft and tasty not tart or sour like Iam used to. Service was quick and everyone was nice and welcoming. Also the guys working were handsome - so many positive to return. But on a serious not many places make decent sandwiches but the the flavors don't stand out. Massi's flavors stand out against each other and the freshly baked baked is the cherry on top. I do wish the sandwiches were bigger, however that won't stop me from returning to try some of the other selections. Thank you

Yelp
New samwich spot on Broadway. I had the cheesesteak, it was delicious but small, a bit salty, not sure if that was from the cooper cheese or the meat. The bread was delicious and soft. The fries were some of the best I've had, cooked in beef tallow. Other joints should try their fries! Staff was super nice. Nice big seating area in the back, A/C blasting on a hot summer day, games playing on the big screen, clean modern bathroom to wash up, A bit pricey to put it in the regular rotation. But I'll definitely be back. 4 1/2 stars

Niko K.

Yelp
Great food, great staff, great vibe. Philly cheese sandwich and the french fries are awesome!

Karen W.

Yelp
This new addition to the Astoria area was wonderful. The staff were welcoming and friendly. I ordered the grilled chicken with garlicky broccoli rabe and provolone cheese. They make their own semolina bread that was fresh. Phenomenal taste!!! I will definitely try the other menus options. Massi please expand your menu. Kudos to you. You're off to a great start!!!

Daniel E.

Yelp
I was confused about this place because during their soft opening they were only open once a week and there was a line down the block. Finally they opened with a little more flexible hours. 1-9pm. I wish they could be open at noon though. Sandwich was incredible! Fresh semolina makes a big difference

Yelp
Had high hopes for this new local sandwich spot. Very nice and clean on the inside, however, i dont recall the last time i had sandwiches that were so over the top greasy and mushy like the sandwiches here. It was literally like eating a cup of oil. Had to throw it out. Factor in the prices they charge for this is insane. I definitely wont be returning, there are much better options.

Mike V.

Yelp
Lucky enough to be in Astoria this past Saturday and even luckier to grab a sandwich and fries at Massi's! Great vibe and food! The whole staff was friendly. Ordered 2 sandwiches with fries and enjoyed every bite! They don't use any seed oils and bake fresh bread, amazing!! Can't wait to return!

Dominique J.

Yelp
Quite literally an amazing sandwich, I almost got a second one to go just in case. The chicken & broccoli rabe is full of flavor but wasn't super heavy and the fries are to die for. The staff was friendly and attentive and I would 100% go back
google avatar

Christopher D.

Yelp
Just had one of the best sandwiches, and I know sandwiches, and Massi's is the real deal. If you're ever in queens, you must make a stop.

Kyle T.

Yelp
I went to Massi's during their soft opening, while the sandwhiches are good they are like pretty tiny. For $15 a sandwhich at other italian deli's in the area you would get a much larger sandwhich with the same quality. You can also say the same for the dirty fries $20/22, when I went it was sooo packed and I did not see a single person order the dirty fries as I feel it is just way too overpriced.

Stavros Z.

Yelp
The food was amazing and came out quickly. The employees were also very nice with good energy, definitely recommended.

Lefteri Z.

Yelp
Great service and excellent Chicken Parm and Philly cheesesteak sandwiches , not to mention the sourdough bread and cooked in beef tallow!!!

Maria S.

Yelp
I had the Cubano sandwich and it was amazing! I love how they don't use any seed oils! Their fries are unreal as well and staff was very friendly!

Lori F.

Yelp
Went to the soft opening in Astoria on Friday. While it's always fun to try new places, the hero's, although tasty were much smaller than they look on Instagram. The price for 4 sandwiches was near $70.00. I consider that pretty steep given the quantity. Sal Kris and Charlie will always be my sandwich king as they are delicious and you get your moneys worth!!

Jenny M.

Yelp
Was able to try this new spot and I loved it. The service was fast and easy and I loved the chicken parm sandwich! I'll definitely be back :)
