Levantine eatery with kebabs, falafel, lamb, and grilled meats

"For a festive night out with friends passing platters around a table on a sprawling, covered back patio, Mazra gets the job done. The indoor space is pretty too, with lots of plants and colorful murals, and makes for an ideal setting for eating fall-off-the-bone six-hour braised lamb shank and charred whole heirloom cauliflowerdoused in creamy tahini. Beverages are limited, but meals come with complimentary tea, and you can BYOB." - Gabi Moskowitz

"Jordan and Saif Makableh transformed their father’s halal grocery store into a James Beard Award-nominated Levantine restaurant. Their new Redwood City location has a stylish dining room and a patio flourishing with plants and a fountain. The falafel mezza sampler showcases an excellent selection of sauces and pickles, including tzatziki, hummus, roasted beet dip, and baba ghanoush. For smoky meat lovers, there’s duck, branzino, lamb chops, and kebabs all grilled over mesquite wood." - Octavio Peña

"A restaurant in Redwood City recognized for its chefs, Jordan Makableh and Saif Makableh, who are semifinalists in the Best Chef: California category." - Dianne de Guzman

"I learned that Mazra in Redwood City was significantly damaged in a fire on Tuesday, just two months after opening on April 1. The blaze began during dinner service behind the restaurant’s wood-fired charcoal grill and spread through its walls; though more than a hundred people were dining at the time, everyone was evacuated. As Redwood City Battalion Chief Chris Cottle put it, "Rather than a big dramatic fire, it was just one we were chasing around in the walls." Co-owner Jordan Makableh says he plans to rebuild the damaged parts of the restaurant. When it opened, Mazra offered a halal Levantine menu featuring crispy fried olives and halloumi rolls, branzino platters, and fresh falafel, among other dishes, and the restaurant’s Yelp page says it is scheduled to reopen on August 1." - Justine Jones
