Messy - Review - Soho - New York - The Infatuation

"The Lighthouse team has a casual, counter-service spot in Soho for sandwiches and skewers. At Messy, they grill proteins like pork and chicken, as well as mushrooms, on sticks, and you can choose to get them as a platter or in a pita sandwich. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Team Infatuation

Lighthouse, a Mediterranean restaurant in Williamsburg, looks to Japan for its new sibling Messy in Manhattan: ingredients like miso, wasabi, furikake, and togarashi find their way to kebabs, sandwiches, mezze, and more.

It's a small-plates type place: the portions are quite small but the pricing is good. You definitely have to order more than one dish. I've been looking for a solid tuna steak since I came back from Italy and I finally found it here unintentionally. The steak skewer was juicy and flavorful. Cooked perfectly. I would come back but I wish it was open till 10.

It is a good day when I have 15 minutes or an hour to stop by and have a quick lunch at Messy. Messy is a warm and inviting space that punches way above its weight. The staff is so friendly and helpful. Each time I visit I like to try something new and for the last few visits I haven’t been able to stay away from the tuna sandwich - I was told the tuna was sourced from Greenpoint Fish. Nevertheless, the kebab sandwich, pork sandwich, addictive cabbage, and various skewers have all been so delicious. I also love being able to have a sandwich and a side of cabbage and get right back into work without feeling lethargic. The portion sizes are great and the prices are even better. Go to Messy. If you’re lucky to secure the outside table - you’re in for a wonderful moment.

The team behind Lighthouse (which I’ve also heard great things about) opened this casual Mediterranean spot a couple months ago and I’d been meaning to check it out Wow, it was SO good, way better than I even expected based on the unassuming, hole in the wall vibes on Sullivan Street The chicken and steak sandwiches were both excellent: perfectly cooked meat (especially the chicken which was super juicy) and the other ingredients (salad, amba, tahini) all added a lot to the sandwiches. They also layer the ingredients in the pita so that you get a bit of everything in each bite which I thought was a pretty pro move. They’re not the biggest sandwiches but they pack a punch and at $11 each are a great deal. Beware that — as the name implies — they are a bit messy to eat. I also got a side of the “addictive cabbage” which comes in the bowls and I had high hopes for based on some reviews I read but I thought it was just alright (basically just lightly cooked, peppery cabbage) Pro tip: get a side of chipotle mayo, it’s better than average and really flavorful, perfect to add a bit to the sandwiches The place is small but cute with a few seats both inside and outside, and Washington Square Park is only two blocks away if you wanna go have a little picnic like I did. The staff was also super friendly and helpful. Overall loved this spot and will definitely be back for lunch or a quick dinner soon!

So yummy! I got the steak plate with an extra skewer - great portion for the price, and the steak was so so tender. Service was also excellent, fast and friendly :) One of the best spots in the area!!

walked by this place in Soho ordered the chicken skewer platter. It came with rice, salad sauce, and one chicken skewer, which I didn’t think was enough so I ordered extra chicken. It was really good. super tasty salad, rice, cabbage, and hot pepper.

I had high hopes, but the skewers were really disappointing. They were extremely watery, likely because the salad was served on the same plate—everything just blended into a soggy mess. The flavors didn’t stand out, and the texture suffered badly. On the plus side, the staff was friendly and welcoming, which I appreciated. The location is quite small—cozy, but also a bit cramped. Overall, not the worst experience, but the food quality needs improvement. I wouldn’t return for the skewers.

The food and the vibes are so good, it’s fast casual meets healthy. A neighborhood staple! You have to get the skewers and the messy fries!

It takes not longer than 10 minutes to get a high quality fast food. Affordable, nice service and DELICIOUS! They use a wood fired oven so it tastes (and smells) sooo good! I highly recommend this place ✨

Yelp
Hard to believe that this place , which exist more than 5 months hasn't got the attention. It's tiny but with seats and bar seats , it's with very small (but right) menu . The food is an excellent Mediterranean with Indian touch , skewers like kebab and chicken are fantastic , home made tahini and fresh salad are the exact addition. Great , friendly service . Definitely recommended!!!!

Yelp
Walked in for a quick bite, was taken off guard at how delicious this was. The steak so tender, and the sauce absolutely delicious. Plus the staff was really friendly. Highly recommend

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic steak sandwich, this place needs much more love. The perfect quick lunch, juicy, spicy, sauce combos and crunch. Staff was nice, cool wooden sitting areas in the restaurant and little decorations.
