I can't tell you how excited I am that this finally happened. I can't tell you how I have lamented being unable to get to the Alemany or Noe Valley farmers' markets (ok, too lazy to get up that early on a weekend) and too thrifty (and lazy) to BART to the Ferry Building. For many a year, Bi-Rite has been my only option for fresh, tasty, local produce.
No longer! A few weeks ago, Mission Community Market opened a mere two blocks--two blocks!--from my house (and I mean short-ways blocks, not long-ways). And, bonus, it's open during hours that reasonable people are out and about and able to run errands (Thursdays, 4-8 pm).
Although it's unlikely it will ever be anything like approaching Alemany in size and variety, the number of vendors has been growing. In addition to tons of veggies & herbs and a reasonable amount of fruit (with most vendors offering tastes before you buy), there is also usually a vendor selling lots of different kinds of nuts, a flower stand, and people selling fresh-made juices. Don't forget the street food vendors! Grab a papusa or emapanada to munch on while you shop.
While the quality is quite good, Mission Community Market is not particularly cheap. I haven't been to The Ferry Building farmers' market in a while, but from what I remember, their prices are comparable. Out of curiosity, I did some price comparing with Bi-Rite, and MCM is only a tad cheaper (eg, $3.50/lb for heirloom tomatoes vs $3.99/lb). Also, every time I've gone, I've ended up spending like $40, though, to be honest, that's more often because I can't restrain myself than because of the prices. And having tasty, fresh, organic produce whose origins you know does have a certain amount of value.
