"I checked out the glassy downtown location of NYC’s mini-Japanese chain. This most-recent one, open since 2022, stands apart with stunning views of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral across the street. I scored the last seat at a soft turquoise bar stool to watch the team’s sushi-making skills at work. The classics are done well, as seen in my six-piece spicy tuna roll ($15), which paired well with a unique glass of Japanese white from Katsunuma Winery ($18). A front-row seat at the bar doubles as a show, with my high-pouring mixologist producing seasonals that currently toy with sake, garam masala, and anise. The Manhattan company is now on Grubhub and DoorDash, which makes for a nice night of sushi at home." - Bettina Makalintal
"A more accessible sibling to higher-end omakase offerings, this casual dining outpost brings the same beverage ethos to a broader audience by offering thoughtfully chosen sakes by the glass, carafe, or bottle alongside approachable Japanese fare." - Shana Clarke
"Momoya is the sushi headquarters for all residents of Chelsea high rises. What do those residents come for? Spicy tuna on crispy rice. The goma-ae spinach with sesame sauce is incredible, too. And, while the space isn't anything fancy, there are a good number of tables and a large white marble counter, and it works well for a date or even a work lunch if your office is nearby. This place also has locations on the Upper West Side and Soho." - bryan kim, neha talreja, carlo mantuano, sonal shah
"The owners of Momoya sushi restaurants are opening two new restaurants: a high-end sushi spot and a fine-dining kaiseki bar, both featuring indoor and outdoor seating." - Melissa McCart
"For low-key intimacy, this homey Upper West Sider with wooden walls, booths, and a cozy two-seat bar, is a good bet. In addition to the regular menu with such dishes as aged tofu with bonito flakes; warm mushroom salad with yuzu garlic vinaigrette; grilled black cod; and sushi omakase; there are specials including a salmon belly truffle roll ($23); and the Mamoya Box ($65) - 9 small bowls filled with sashimi. On New Year’s Eve, that comes with a complimentary glass of Champagne." - Eater Staff
