Delicious food in an unassuming space. Mor Mu Dong is a hidden treasure, tucked away near a mangrove forest in Chalong, Phuket. The restaurant is about a 12 minute walk from my hotel, so I was really excited to check out a Michelin Guide restaurant that was so close to where I was staying. The food did not disappoint!
I came on the last evening of my trip to Thailand, so I didn’t have much cash on me, but fortunately my server (a very nice lady) informed me that credit card is accepted with a minimum order of 500 THB. I had originally intended to just have a Singha beer and a signature entrée, but I needed to order an additional dish to reach the credit card threshold so I asked my server which dish she would recommend. She recommended the crab rolls, and it was an impeccable choice.
I ended up ordering the crab rolls and the Mor Mu Dong signature fried rice for dinner. The meal came with a complimentary plate of fresh and flavourful fruit (guava, mango, and pineapple) with a side of sweet and spicy fish sauce dip (nam pla wan) - which, as a person of southeast Asian descent, I very much appreciated. The fried rice was very well seasoned and came with a side plate of cucumber and fish sauce. The crab rolls? Divine. Each order of crab rolls came with five generous-sized rolls and a sweet and sour dipping sauce. The rolls were juicy and flavourful and just the right amount of food, leaving me very satisfied but not overstuffed.
The restaurant itself is outdoors with no air conditioning, so I would recommended going for dinner later in the evening if you don’t want to sit in the heat (but make sure you load up in the bug spray to ward off mosquitoes). Most of the signage is in Thai, so I wasn’t sure at first if I had arrived at the right place, but the front of house staff were very friendly and brought me to a table right away. I would highly recommended making a stop here for authentic southern Thai cuisine. The food is great and the price is very reasonable.
