Phuket, Thailand, Dining Guide to the Food & Drink Scene | Eater

"An atmospheric series of elevated dining platforms winding through a mangrove, popular with Thais for obscure, locally driven dishes that use native herbs and plants — examples include spicy stuffed fish, mackerel packed with curry paste and fried, a crunchy sea grape salad, and rice tinted blue with butterfly-pea flower." - Austin Bush

Eat like a local: An authentic Southern Cuisine in Phuket Tucked away in a mangrove-lined canal, Mor Mu Dong is one of those local gems that feels like a well-kept secret. The open-air wooden pavilions and rustic surroundings set the tone for a laid-back, no-frills meal, but the food is what truly shines. The menu is extensive, with a focus on Southern Thai dishes that pack a punch in flavor. Highlights from our meal included the stir-fried sataw with shrimp (spicy, funky, and addictive), grilled fish wrapped in pandan leaves, and the signature braised pork belly in soy sauce. Everything came out hot, fast, and generously portioned. Service was brisk and friendly, though not overly attentive, but that’s part of the charm here. It’s the kind of place where locals gather, seafood is the star, and prices remain refreshingly reasonable for the quality and setting. Pros: - Authentic Southern Thai flavors - Beautiful, natural setting with private wooden huts - Great value for money - Ideal for sharing a feast with friends or family Cons: - A bit off the beaten path, best to come with a car or hire a local driver - Not ideal for those who prefer air-conditioning or modern comforts If you’re in Phuket and want to eat like a local, Mor Mu Dong is well worth the detour. Come hungry, come curious, and be ready for some bold flavors.

8/4/25 tues A true hidden gem, a champion restaurant This is quite a “ shocking” place to me. I initially tot this is a restaurant, recommended by the hotel staff. It turns out to be the most dingy of all Thai restaurants, with spartan metal tables and aged plastic chairs. Nothing seems to be particularly delicious as you look thru the tattered menu, even when the food comes , it doesn’t not encourage your appetite as the presentation is just food on plastic plates. I changed my mind after I took the first bite, the place and the presentation just does not matter anymore. The spicy stuffed fish is something out of this world, it is not a fish at all! It is minced bouncy spicy fish meat, there is no bone in it at all! I do not know how they do it then it looks like a fish!??? I ate the whole thing, every bit of it. The deep fried pork with some leaves makes a good combination of meat and herbal crisps. The black squid looks horrid but taste so tender and delicious. Another big star is the crab meat rolls, soy skin wrap a big fat portion of crab meat, served with a sweet sauce. I recommend all who is in Phuket to give this place a try. Not kidding, this is one of the best in Thailand. A good meal I will remember for the rest of my life. 7 dishes plus drinks cost 1645 baht.

A Hidden Culinary Gem in Phuket! We tried the Kang Soong (with fish), which tasted more like a spicy curry without coconut—bold, aromatic, and absolutely hit the spot. The pork with salt was soft, fatty, and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Then came the squid in black ink—I’m not usually a fan of squid, but this dish truly surprised me. It was rich, flavorful, and unforgettable. And finally, the sea grapes (also known as green caviar)—this is something you really need to experience. I’ve never seen seaweed presented like this before: fresh, vibrant, and paired with spicy dipping sauces that elevated it into something truly unique and delicious. The restaurant itself is tucked away—think sheds in the middle of a mangrove forest—but don’t let that deter you. It’s off the beaten path, but well worth the journey. Price wise this one won't hurt your wallet. One of the best meals I’ve had in Phuket.

Came here after getting an accident makes the food 1000x better 😆😂 What we ordered: 1) Gaeng Som (spicy stew with fish) - super duper good. If you want to taste authentic soup from Southern, order this. But! It’s spicy hehe 2) Fried rice Phuket (?) - one of the dish that exceed my expectations cus usually fried rice in Thailand isn’t that good😭 BUT this one is soo good. Recommended to order! 3) Squid stir fried with ink - this dish never go wrong. It doesn’t taste fishy and they give quite a lot of squid! 4) Stir fried melinjo leave with egg - ordered this so we have some veggie as side dish. It’s so good to pair this with the fried rice and squid! 5) ปลายัดไส้ / stuffed fish - I didn’t expect for me to like this dish. It taste good, well balanced herbs, not too strong. 1 of them is 90/100 baht. Oh, they also give you sour mango and sweet sauce to help you snacking while waiting for the food :’) Overall, I finally found my favorite Thai Seafood restaurant in Phuket. Will come back kaa🫶🏼👍🏼

I'm not a seafood person (I.e. it's never my first choice). I loved every single thing (7 dishes) that I ate here and would eat it again in a heartbeat. I can now say I love seafood if it's cooked the right way. Outstanding: octopus in ink (sweet, tender), deep fried small whole fish (felt like I was eating savory fried chicken), stir fried prawn and banana shoot. They have a shorter menu in English with pictures if you can't speak Thai. It is worth the drive.

Went to eat here in low season after hearing many good reviews. There were lots of tables free to sit so we lost no time here but the service was absolutely terrible, there were a lot of servers but they sat around more then they were serving people or being attentive to the customers, as if when it’s low season they just don’t put in any effort anymore. This was not worth it at all for the food there, quality/pricing was alright but there’s so many other better restaurants out there.

- Local food with great taste and fair price - Deep fried stuffed fish has a little spiciness and load of curry mixed with coconut milk. A must try menu. - Stir-fry squid with its ink tasted light.. good with other dishes with heavy taste - Fish meat in orange curry soup is very flavourful and is quite spicy - Phuket stir-fry rice is cooked dry with local ingredients (similar to fried rice) - There are plenty of free parking spaces - Washroom available in the restaurant
