The 38 Best Restaurants in Taipei | Eater

"Fatty pork over rice is a splendid Taiwanese comfort dish and has become, over the years, the main draw at this quaint Taiwanese restaurant, an intentional flashback with lanterns and papered walls. It’s all small shared plates, and both the fried squid balls and white-cut chicken are lovely ways to start. There’s also creamy mapo tofu cooked with eggplant and sesame oil-laced chicken over sticky rice. [$$]" - Clarissa Wei

Our friends recommended this place and we made a booking for dinner. The lu ro fan was one of the best we’ve had ! The special winter soup was nourishing and tasty . Every dish was satisfying and well flavoured . Highlights were the squid with rice noodles and clay pot pork. Highly recommended

One of my go-to spots for authentic Taiwanese food. My favorites include the 'House Stuffed Pork Roll' (雞捲)—crispy, meaty, and downright tasty. The 'Braised Pork Rice' (鹵肉飯) is a guilty pleasure—super collagen-rich, unapologetically fatty, and oh-so-satisfying. Their 'Oyster Omelet' (蚵仔煎) stands out too—no deep-fried mini omelets here, just a hearty, bouncy egg packed with decent-sized oysters. And the 'Small Squid Stuffed with Dried Fish' (乾片小卷)? Absolutely heavenly. That said, not everything hit the mark. The 'Sauteed Taiwanese Lettuce' (炒A菜) lacked the 'wok hei' we Cantonese love—it felt more steamed than sautéed. The poached chicken (白斬雞) was so undercooked we left the dark meat untouched. I get that some older Chinese diners love the tender texture of barely cooked chicken, but for me, it’s just too risky to eat undercooked poultry. Dessert was a highlight—ice, red bean, and jelly made for the perfect sweet ending to the meal. Service is always friendly and warm, but the air conditioning was cranked up way too high on a rainy early fall evening. Also, the cash-only policy feels outdated for a restaurant of this scale. I get it for quick eateries or roadside spots, but here? It’s a bit inconvenient in this day and age.

Local Taiwanese street foods and familiar comfort foods will never be the same again after you dine here. Even a simple night market item like a Taiwanese sausage can be elevated. It was mind blowing, and yet not out of this world different that it felt confusing. Definitely one way to have the best of local familiar favourites all in one place. They didn’t get their Michelin stars for nothing, that’s for sure. Highly recommended!

The food was good. Liver was perfectly cooked. Must eat hot. The stew pork rice was super good. Definitely a place I will go again.

It has a low rating score but the food is top notch. Better than many highly ranked restaurants. Stand out dishes were the double thread ( sliced liver and kidney) with scallions, the braised pork rice( redefines pork umami), century egg in hot sauce ( my wife preferred it with sweet ginger), sauteed beans with deep fried intestines ( mouth feels was so good). Local draft beer paired well with the food. Only disappointment was the 3 cup chicken which though well caramelised lacked flavour( perhaps we were too full). Service was friendly and very personable. You can bring your own alcohol for a small charge. Caveat. This place only takes cash. Prices are highish for a sidewalk restaurant but taken into context, it's cheap for a Michelin quality meal.

We came here on a Sunday for lunch and managed to get a table for 2 people. The menu offers a good selection of local dishes, alongside some recommendations. We had the thousand year egg, which was very rich and the right amount of spice, the sesame chicken, which was good but wish I knew it was cold and the mapo tofu which we really.enjoyed as it was less heavy than others we've had. The staff was polite and attentive. Overall, a good meal if you're in the area.

Delicious and authentic Taiwanese Cuisine. Recommended to try Boiled chicken but needs to order in advance, Lu Rou Fan, oysters and boiled squid. Prior reservation is required. Only accepts cash.
