Mediterranean market with curated wines, sandwiches, and artisanal goods

"Nido feels like an Andalusian market that’s been in the family for decades. Except instead of the south of Spain, Nido tucks its wicker furniture and tiled walls into a small storefront in Mt. Pleasant. Inside, young creative director types sip wine next to homeowners between shelves stocked with imported ingredients that you probably tried in Europe, but couldn’t find in the States. There’s Spanish paprika, Italian calamarata, Greek fennel seeds, French grapefruit vinegar, plus all kinds of Mediterranean olives, cheeses, and cured meats. And if you’re thinking that this sounds like the type of place that has tinned fish with colorful labels stacked into a non-perishable mosaic, you would be right. This is where to go if you wish Each Peach had seating or Ellē had groceries. photo credit: Tom Rose photo credit: Tom Rose photo credit: Tom Rose Pause Unmute Aside from the market, Nido serves a seasonal, sandwich-heavy menu with a serious wine selection. Food is served until 2:30pm, and if the Spanish BLT on fresh-baked focaccia with Serrano ham is available, get it. Other hits include a chilled tomato soup thickened with bread and topped with hardboiled egg, and Basque cheesecake for dessert. Go to Nido for a quick lunch and leave stocked up for your next dinner party." - Tom Rose

"The perfect place to grab snacks for a picnic in Rock Creek Park or grab a glass of wine after hiking Piney Branch Trail, Nido has plenty of delicious prepared snacks and bottles of wine discriminately chosen from vineyards across the world. It’s evident that three veteran industry chefs and sommeliers run and stock the wine shop. High-quality snacks, like hard-to-find tins of seafood, truffle-flavored chips, jams, crackers, and even cookies, line the shelves and a fridge is filled with freshly made eggplant dip, seasonal bean or chicken salads, and house-made charcuterie sets. For a full meal, head to the counter to order fresh tortilla española and an array of sandwiches, such as a tuna option topped with hard-boiled egg, aioli, piquillo peppers, olives, and watercress." - Emily Venezky

"Chef duo Caleb Jang and Roren Choi return to a Mount Pleasant space on Saturday, May 17, from 3 to 7 p.m. with savory bites and sweet treats that fuse Korean American and Jewish American culinary traditions, teaming up with Korean-American Jewish storyteller Liz Kleinrock to make blended dishes like red bean rugelach ($4 each), soondubu (spicy tofu stew) shakshuka ($18), and marbled rye steamed buns filled with Korean-spiced pastrami and kimchi sauerkraut ($18 for two). The cooking partners told Eater the “Both/And” menu is a “celebration of identity, heritage, and the magic that happens when cultures collide and collaborate.” Preorders will be available for a few savory items plus pastry boxes ($11) with four rugelachs, two yuja lemon custard and poppy wild sesame hamantaschen, and two black sesame and vanilla-glazed black and white cookies; in-house–only desserts include a sufganiyot and hotteok crossover ($9) filled with manischevitz jam and tahini butter. Devoted followers can check the full menu and preorder on the venue’s site starting May 9; preorders must be submitted by Wednesday, May 14." - Emily Venezky

"Nido Wine Shop is participating in Mount Pleasant Street cocktail week and co-owner Morgan Stana will teach 'Vermouth 202, Everything You Didn’t Know You Need to Know'; the shop is also one of several venues contributing raffle prizes and signature drinks to the themed week." - Emily Venezky

"Nido is known for having everything you might need to be transported to the Mediterranean for an afternoon, from a curated selection of wines and liquors to prepared snacks and imported specialty groceries to pair along with them. For a luxurious lunch, treat yourself to the shop’s tortilla espanola, light salads, and delightful sandwiches (the broccolini melt is a gooey sleeper hit) on fresh focaccia and loafs, paired with a glass of rotating wines. Also keep an eye out for fun events, including Friday night wine tastings, small dinner parties, and even weekend pop-ups." - Emily Venezky
