The Best New Bars In LA - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"They say god never closes a door without opening a window, which is how we’d describe the situation at No Smoking, a tongue-in-cheek dive bar that replaced beloved Mid-City haunt Mandrake Bar. The new owners added some retro beer memorabilia and wood paneling that make the place look a little like a cabin in Big Bear cabin, but they also kept the drinking den's scrappy charm fully intact (well drinks go for $12 and there’s a daily happy hour from 4-7pm). Come for the chill patio in the back, low-fi DJs that spin on weekends, and a cheeky cocktail list that includes whisky highballs on tap, frozen ube coladas, and a damn smooth coffee negroni." - brant cox, sylvio martins, garrett snyder

LA’s New Restaurant Openings

"Beloved Mid-City haunt Mandrake Bar has been reborn as No Smoking Bar, an easygoing drinking spot on La Cienega with $12 well drinks and a daily happy hour from 4-7pm. The new owners added some retro beer memorabilia and wood paneling that make the place look a little like a Big Bear cabin, but the overall feel remains the same. Cocktails include Japanese whisky highballs on tap, frozen ube coladas, and a drink called the Incredible Hulk Jr. with Powerade and Hpnotiq." - sylvio martins

The Best Japanese Can Opener Is Super Cheap and Available on Amazon | Eater

"A Los Angeles bar where the chef worked earlier in his career; a colleague brought a portable Japanese can opener (the Ganji Kankiri) into the kitchen there, sparking his lasting obsession with its simple, durable, and highly portable design." - Monica Burton

This used to be another bar apparently according to Google, but still retains its hole in the wall appearance. Came here 2 weekends ago - met Chris at the bar. Very personable and professional in his craft. I appreciated the tasteful cocktails he made us (love Negronis and they had a refreshing take on it at the time). Dim-lit establishment has a casual, nostalgic atmosphere with limited seating in a neat outside area in the back. Shoegaze playlist was playing that early Saturday evening which retrofitted the ambience even more. Will definitely be back for more drinks in the weekends to come - cheers! 🍸

Google
The signature cocktails are not to be missed. This Orange peel foam over a coffee Negroni was killer! Cute signs. Unlike the previous bar in this space the patio is no smoking now… I guess they make that clear with the name….

Google
Cute little local bar. Very friendly bartenders. Cute that the sell cup and bowl ramen for late night eats. Great place for simple drinks, wouldn't order any craft cocktails. Has a Cute photo booth in the back

Google
One of the only few bars in LA where you can hang. Best standard and new cocktails, friendly vibe, got a dope patio where they rotate pop up restaurants (pizza, burger, even yakitori). They also have rotating DJs that mix from real vinyl. New weekly spot

Google
Cool new bar that took over Mandrake’s location. More of a lounge than a cocktail bar so wouldn’t be my first spot if craving a cocktail. The menu had a hibiscus mezcal margarita so we ordered two of those and were extremely disappointed when we were handed two slushees. Absolutely no way to assume it wasn’t an actual cocktail and no warning when we ordered. However, some of the other cocktails on the menu, specifically the coffee Negroni, looked incredible. On top of that they had someone with a personal pizza oven they bought on Amazon in the back making pizzas that were somehow $23 each. Crazy when Laurel Grill sells wood oven pizzas for $19 down the street. However, the bar makes up for it by selling top ramen for $5. Overall, an alright place if you have the right expectations. I would come again to get a cheap beer (which are all cans) and order a specific cocktail and not going off their menu.

Google
Horrible experience with a bartender who didn’t like her $20 for two drinks tip after I waited for 30 minutes to simply close out my tab and get my credit card back. 10 minutes later she sends the bouncer to remove me and my friends from the bar. Unprofessional staff and management. Avoid it if you want to have a good time.

Google
Great local bar! Super friendly bar tenders, great rotating drinks at affordable prices, nice patio. Came here a few times and always enjoy it. Would recommend.

Google
Very cute bar outfitted with photo worthy moments. Drink menu is unique with Japanese ice! Nice place to stop in and hang out with friends. Patio in the back has nice vibes- highly recommend to visit.

Yelp
I was so excited to find a local joint to hit up for drinks on any moments notice. Owners and bartenders are friendly, informative, and efficient. They have unique drink options too like this Asian cocktail in a can featuring unique flavors, and their pickle beer which is my go to. Easy and laid back spot to go hang with friends, meet a local, or grab a first date drink.

Yelp
We spent new years here and were very grateful for the decorations we were given, along with the food; they didn't need to do that but it was a very sweet gesture the ownership made for their customers. We thoroughly enjoy coming here! FOOD - there aren't many options when it comes to food, but I appreciate that they have chips as an option bc who doesn't want that when having a drink or 5? SERVICE - it can be quite busy and hard to get your order met here. I would suggest ordering as soon as you arrive and maybe even doubling up. It will help you loosen up some. AMBIANCE - very chill and cool space. We spent me

Yelp
Such an awesome and impressive refresh for this beloved local cool-spot! Super genuine and engaging crew. You gotta get the Toki highball (Japanese whiskey cocktail on tap?!). 10/10 excited to see them thrive! First date, drinks after work, solo bar trip? This is the spot. PS the Photo Booth lives on

Yelp
Such a great dive bar. Went here after dinner and had the best time. Bartenders were great - Ben is amazing - and since I love my Toki highballs it's great to find a place that has it on tap! DJ, Photo Booth, nostalgia - what else could you ask for?!?

Yelp
No Smoking Bar takes over the old Mandrake spot with a low key minimalist but unique vibe where you'll find plenty of wall seating, spots at the bar, and an outdoor patio. They have a small cocktail list on the menu as well as beer, bites (including cup of ramen), and a happy hour where you can save $1-2 on cocktails or beers. Bartenders are solid and can be chatty if you want. Bar interior is relatively dim lighting which is nice and music isn't too loud so easy to have a conversation. Decent amount of street parking!

Yelp
This new dive bar in between Culver City and West Adams is super cozy and cool! Their cocktails are reasonably priced and are very unique and tasty. They also have happy hour deals, a DJ, and a photo booth. It's a great spot to grab a drink at any hour

Yelp
The owner Ben is incredible. He makes an excellent cocktail. The menu offers a few specialty drinks, they are all quite good. Even their beer selection is interesting, they have a pickle beer. They were able to make every drink we threw at them, except a pisco sour but who has pisco. Everything we had was wonderful. There is plenty of room to sit and drink with the layout of the bar and the outdoor patio is particularly nice. This is our new favorite spot.

Yelp
Your neighborhood dive bar with great drinks and even better vibes. I live out in Pasadena, so I'm always on the hunt for good bars I can reach by train and bus. This place is a nice 15 min. walk from La Cienaga/ Jefferson for the E line. The staff and company make the trek worth it. Better put: If I know someone living in Culver City, I might not necessarily like them enough to drive all the way out from E. LA, but I'll definitely take the train to meet them here. They have a generous happy hour for beers and well spirits. Check out their instagram for info on times and days for music and food pop-up events.

Yelp
Fantastic bar, interior transports one to the Midwest circa 1970s. Cocktails are top notch, excellent service. Interior decor is spot on, great bar for heart to heart conversations. Smart interior design, back has outside seating. Perfect bar snugged on Art Gallery row. A dime of a spot!

Yelp
Such a great spot ! I used to go to Mandrake all the time before it closed and I was sad to see them go, but I could not be happier with their successors at No Smoking !! Ben and Chris are awesome, the specialty drinks are delicious, the music is always great, and the overall atmosphere is so fun and inviting.

Yelp
Cool bar but the bartenders are so painfully slow. Was here on Friday and it took so long to get a drink and the place wasn't even that packed. If they had faster bartenders they'd sell twice as many drinks.

Yelp
Love the new local spot - amazing craft cocktails, beers, and vibes. Great hospitality and service.

Yelp
Finally there's a cool bar in Culver City!! I'm being dramatic but truly this bar is very cool. This was where Mandrake used to be which was fine but No Smoking Bar is such a great vibe. The drinks are tasty, the space is really beautiful and considered and the staff is so nice. They also redid the back patio area and it feels more spacious. I can't wait to go back Ps they also have a Photo Booth

Yelp
It's a dive bar. What do you expect? Loud music you're going to have to shout to get your drink order . Service wise it's overcrowded the building has no airflow so if anyone had Covid, you're just fucked . Oh but the atmosphere is 1970s friend basement to get stupid drunk. Logistically they're not set up to have a whole bunch of customers. There's no parking there. They did have some sort of event in their back but there's no heat lamps and it's a very cold. . And if you like dive bars, but non-smoke once this is the bar for you .

Ariel S.

Yelp
Really wanted to love this place. It was recommended to me by someone who knows them. Bartender wasn't friendly, acted like I was doing them a favor purchasing a $15 cocktail. That was a bummer. I'd think they'd want to engage with new customers, not act too cool. I should add the place wasn't busy. Drinks seemed to have potential from the 2 I tried but don't know that I'd come back given the not so warm welcome. Not what I'd expect from a chill speakeasy type bar.
