Yelp
As the name suggests, this Farmer's Market is in Noe Valley, so I won't spend time complaining about the yuppies, babies, or dogs. It's part of the Noe Valley atmosphere and I don't mind it at all. It's cozy, clean, and cute. It's a farmer's market for crying out loud, not a trendy hipster hotspot, so plan your attitude accordingly.
Prices are higher than other random markets all along Mission St., but that's the expected trade-off when you're buying pesticide free, non-GMO produce farmed by local California farmers. You just have to use your judgment--many things are reasonable, but some things I never buy because the prices are outrageous.
Like another reviewer mentioned, if you walk to the back and turn left, the vendor on the right is one I steer clear of. The older guy is rude and wears a permanent frown and all of their produce is insanely expensive. I much prefer Sunny Farms vendor right across from there, which has a pretty good selection of chinese choy among many other things. And you can't beat the $1 a bunch price (same price for bundles of chard too). I also think Happy Boy Farms at the back right has a great selection--they have a beautiful bag of mixed greens with edible flowers that I find myself buying every single week even though it's $5 per 1 lb bag.
Nearly all the vendors are extremely friendly, as is the manager, Elizabeth, and I love that the same vendors are there every time. I must also mention the most important thing, (my favorite thing), which is all the taste testing you can do! Fresh fruit, olives, almonds--and there's a girl who sells strawberries near the back right, who has the most amazing, amazing jams. I can't afford even 1 jar, but she will just let you stand there and sample a few on animal crackers. Also make sure to get some samples from the Indian stand (and buy a few jars of their incredible chutneys if you can afford it).
Lastly, the only reason I'm able to go to this market is because it accepts EBT cards (food stamps/SNAP benefits)! Although my boyfriend and I along with some other lady are apparently the only people who come to Noe Valley to spend food stamps, this may be useful to some of you, just throwing it out there. It's definitely a lifesaver for me because my broke AmeriCorps-employed butt still craves fancy, juicy, fresh produce you can't find at normal supermarkets. Also the wooden coins you get to pay with are awesome. I put them into my old-fashioned drawstring coin purse and walk around like it's the 1600s again. It's really fun to pay with them and some of the vendors still tell me how cool the coins are.
If you live near here or happen to be around on a Saturday, I think it's well worth the visit.
