Ex-Noma Sommelier Collaborates With Chef Elizabeth Haigh for Christmas | Eater London

"An Old Street restaurant that has experienced significant turnover among its core team within a year: its sommelier left as the third founding/core member to depart, following the earlier exits of the executive chef (whose reasons for leaving remain undisclosed) and the head chef, who moved on to other projects." - Adam Coghlan

What the Critics Said About London Restaurants This Week | Eater London

"Although the industrial, high-ceilinged room with concrete floors and big windows led one critic to liken it to a chain pub, the open-fire cooking largely redeems the surroundings: small pork crackling bites with jellied eel draw genuine ‘wow’ reactions, beef tartare is rated top-class, and an orzo with cuttlefish is singled out as a standout. Dishes are generally brightly coloured, light and well balanced, and the kitchen’s way with chips is repeatedly praised — proving that strong food can overcome an uninspiring interior." - George Reynolds

Critic Tim Hayward Says Nuala Sets a ‘New Benchmark for Hospitality’ | Eater London

"Two national critics found much to admire but also notable inconsistencies. Snacks are tightly flavored and a starter of squid with almond cream is singled out as uniquely nourishing and swoon-inducing, while the wine list curated by Honey Spencer is praised for clearly separating funkier natural bottles from more conventional choices. There are brilliant moments — salt-baked beetroot described as worthy of lyric poetry, sublime potato and cabbage side dishes, and a fabulous sweetbreads with cauliflower rarebit — but signature mains can disappoint (a merely OK suckling pig, and a fireplace pumpkin with cheddar called a mess), and puddings are said to read well on the menu yet reduce mostly to creamy bowls. The service and hospitality are warm and cosseting, creating an inviting atmosphere, but some feel the flashes of genius are not frequent enough to justify the prices." - George Reynolds

24 Hours Apart, the Evening Standard Shows How and How Not to Review a Restaurant | Eater London

"A recent opening whose clinical, minimally magnetic dining room—overhead lights likened to a dental hygienist and a central layout referencing the development’s corporate feel—belies food that is warm and often friendly. Dishes vary: some ideas stumble in execution (a Guinness-based sauce made steak tartare overly sloshy; sweetbreads and cauliflower suffered from an underpowered cheese sauce), while others shine, notably a beautiful chicken with chanterelles and a duo of potato preparations described as the menu’s best. Overall the place projects a warm-hearted intent amid inconsistent plates, and early coverage even sparked discussion because two high-profile critics reviewed it within 24 hours, one of those write-ups provoking controversy for tone and behavior as much as for food." - George Reynolds

Seven Xenophobic Lines from Julie Burchill’s Nuala Restaurant Review | Eater London

"A temporary Evening Standard restaurant reviewer, Julie Burchill, filed a largely positive review of a new, modern Irish restaurant that is notable less for its food than for its casual use of anti‑Irish stereotypes. Dining with a companion she calls “The Flâneur” (described as “three‑quarters Irish”), she peppered the piece with jibes portraying the Irish as habitual drinkers — noting “jolly green bottles” on tables and quipping about livers — and praising the return of lunchtime drinking among younger diners. She reduced Irish cuisine to soda bread and colcannon, fretted about fiddle music as a potential soundtrack, yet also admitted surprise at a “confident, modern room,” and conceded that, while she hates people who talk about “having the craic,” the restaurant is a good place to find it. The column revived earlier examples of her anti‑Irish commentary from the 1980s and 2000s, prompting readers to question the paper’s editorial choices; rumour suggests this may be her second and final ES Magazine turn, and many hope for a different tone from the next permanent reviewer." - Adam Coghlan

Nuala is a hip restaurant with a beautiful menu, situated in a setting with medium/high level music and champagne on every table. The waiters are smart and uniformed, with small shoulder pouches equipped with whatever they need to make the clients happy. The space has both indoor and outdoor seating. The menus comprise ample seafood and meat selections in an easy-to-read two column format in both English and Russian on the obverse. The whole seabass with dressed greens is one of the best I’ve tasted in Central Asia, perfectly cooked on both visits I came with the perfect amount of fat and lean balanced in proportion. The dressed greens had a hint of lemon to provide enough contrast and not steal the show from the fish. Pastas are great — congolese (aka clams) and king crab were sweet and perfectly accompanied with a light butter sauce and homemade noodles, though my nitpick is that the noodles were a bit entangled and difficult to separate and eat. Wine is served in the proper glassware and even decanted on some occasions. Would definitely return. One of the best restaurants in Almaty.

Visited in September 2025. Kazakhstan 🇰🇿 Almaty. Drawn by glowing reviews and a seafood-heavy menu, we chose Nuala and settled on its lovely summer veranda. The indoor dining area is equally striking, with an elegant art deco design that clearly had a lot of effort poured into it. FOOD: The menu showcases high-quality seafood, sourced from Europe and Russia (notably the scallops), alongside some meat options. We sampled several small plates to get a taste of the range. The two Gillardeau oysters were a standout—meaty, fresh, with a subtle briny and sweet flavor, perfectly detached from their shells. The popcorn shrimp were a hit, ordered multiple times for their soft, juicy flesh and crisp coating, lightly dressed with a mayo-based sauce—simple yet consistently delicious. The smoked salmon pâté had a pleasant, creamy texture, though softer bread would’ve been better for spreading. The grilled octopus was tender but slightly chewy and lacked the smoky, grilled flavor we craved. The scallop carpaccio impressed with its sweet, fresh, and delicate texture. However, the vegetable dishes fell flat: the tonnato peppers had barely a trace of sauce, leaving the pepper to dominate, while the cabbage, though properly cooked and soft, blended too much with its creamy sauce, lacking a distinct flavor punch. A pleasant addition was the ice cream they offer as a complimentary treat at the end of the meal. SERVICE: We visited twice, and the first experience was exceptional, thanks to our waiter Anton, a true professional who made us feel cared for with every step. The second visit, however, was lackluster, with service that felt hit-or-miss depending on the staff. VERDICT: Nuala left us with fond memories, thanks to its quality food and inviting atmosphere. The extensive wine and champagne list—practically a book of its own—at reasonable prices was a rare treat. We recommend it for seafood lovers and those seeking a stylish dining experience in Almaty.

Beautiful interiors. We had an initial struggle as we are English speakers but they found a waiter who could communicate with us promptly. It was also so easy to reserve with them via WhatsApp. Everything we tasted was so tender, delicious, and seasoned well, with the beef stracciatella and chicken course as standouts. They even gave us complimentary ice cream which is their current collab with La Perla.

Here's a rewritten version with a bit more flair: "This hip eatery is a flavor fiesta! The international menu is a culinary globe-trot, and everything I tried was simply fantastic. The creamy pâté was the perfect starter, while the duck was cooked to perfection – melt-in-your-mouth goodness! The pecan cheese cake was delightful, and the chocolate cake? Decadent! A highlight was discovering a local red wine (see pictured for the name), which pleasantly surprised me with its rich flavors – definitely worth trying again!"

Nuala is a great restaurant. The waiters are polite, courteous, and attentive, and the food is terrific. The quality is of a high European standard and reasonably priced for what you get. We'll be back and recommend that anyone visiting Kazakhstan or living in Almaty should visit at least once.

I just had the worse ever restaurant experience in Almaty, I was with my friends and the waitress was sooo mean and rude, we were talking about beshparmak, and she half heard the conversation saying to us even i didn’t asked her, that we don’t serve the beshparmak. Later we ordered latte, she said I am not good at making latte, so I will try as I can . How it is possible to talk like this??? I forgot to ask her name unfortunately, but totally do not recommend this place they are racist 😡

Definitely worth a visit! We were a large group without a reservation as we’d just arrived in Almaty. Tables were reconfigured to accommodate us and soon we were enjoying drinks and our meal. The waitress was welcoming and very keen that we would enjoy ourselves, which we absolutely did! The food was delicious, every dish. Heartily recommend.

Fantastic fine dining experience, love the various elements based dining they have curated, as well as an extensive wine list and array of liquor plus cocktails. I'm looking forward to my next visit!
