Metro Detroit’s Best Barbecue Restaurants | Eater Detroit

"Nunn’s BBQ was opened in 1984 by Wiley Nunn. Now Wiley’s son Al Nunn is carrying on his father’s legacy of smoked meats in this unassuming storefront. The ribs are cooked on a 10-foot charcoal grill before going into the smoker. Other choices include rib tips, pulled pork, turkey ribs, rotisserie chicken, and pigs feet. Make sure to leave some room for one of the desserts such as peach cobbler, banana pudding, sweet potato pie, or pound cake." - Eater Staff

A Local's Guide to the Best Restaurants in Detroit | Bon Appétit

"Since the legendary Milt’s closed in 2012, there’s been a tussle to see who’ll wear the rib-tips crown. Sold at bulletproof-glass Chinese restaurants and street stands throughout the city, rib tips are a cut off the sparerib with a little piece of fat and cartilage. The ones atNunn’sare sweet, juicy nuggets with some chew and some char (and all at a nice discount from the slab)—almost more like Chinese barbecued pork and better than any other version in town." - ByBen Hall

I've been coming here since I was a child and my parents have loved this place since forever and im very disappointed with the sides its become a nightmare the yams were slimy with no flavor as if they put syrup in them not the original flavor horrible the macaroni should be simple to make however it continues to be horrible not the original recipe not even close to being eatable they need major work ! Everything else is consistent and great but im overall concerned that whomever is making the sides does not care what so ever.

Hi, my name is Omar’m a professional chef, Smoking and barbecue was one of my favorite things to doand I never thought that I would find a barbecue place that would match to my standards in Detroit I was a chef in Denver, Colorado and I just came home about four years ago looking for a great barbecue place and I think I found it right here. Keep up the good work. I just have one question is it possible for you to put me into your baked beans If not, no big deal I was just asking. Once once again, thank you guys for a wonderful meal. I ordered it three times in a row so far and I haven’t been disappointed. Thank you so much.

I grew up on BBQ cooked over charcoal, which is quite different than the smoked ribs i usually encounter. Yes, cooking over charcoal does sometimes create that bark on one side of the meat but i love it. This place has had me in a chokehold for the past month, with me driving 30 mins each way to eat. I love it. I am a large end kind of guy and this place is the best i've had with only Vicky's coming in second. Once, the ribs were fatty but i doin't care. Every other time, they were delicious. Regarding the sides... This is where most BBQ joints struggle. The Coleslaw and potato salad are either off a Sysco truck or similar to Kroger prepared food. The green beans kind of remind me of the green beans you'd get if the church had a bbq dinner sale... not bad. The baked beans... not the best. When i order, i usually have some macaroni made at home and i always have a bag of cooked greens in the freezer. I live solo so i will make food, freeze it and have it along side their meat. I did not like the greens there but the potato salad and slaw, for what it is; unless you're going to be making it... boiling and peeling potatoes...dicing celery and belle pepper, this works :) I love this place AND the girls working are always EXTREMEMLY friendly. I always tip them- even though they never seem to expect it. I love this place and pray they never change.

It was like stepping into a family members house that you haven’t seen for a while. She was super happy that I stopped in. Now the food, omg!!! Wow ribs fell apart and the sauce was tantalizingly delicious! You could tell that the crinkle cut fries were cooked in fresh hot oil! We can not wait to order again! God bless Nunns bbq and family!

Food was pretty good. Macaroni was VERY good and cheesy! Yams very good! Greens very good! Rib tips and ribs pretty good! Pork chops tasted like some true homemade pork chops you fried at home, very good! Comparing to other BBQ places, serving size of tips could have been more for what you pay but overall great food and the guy who took our order was very nice and helpful.

I ordered a slab of ribs around 11:20pm, I had my order at 1126pm. I am very picky when it comes to ribs, and these were absolutely amazing. I just didn’t like that there fryers are turned off around 11 but the close at midnight 🤔. I was skeptical about all them bugs being inside but I get it the doors open and close all day and night… Other than the grill being turned off early, and the bugs, the ribs were amazing

I was referred here by my aunt. She said their rib tips were not expensive and the pork chop sandwich was good. I was not disappointed!! The rib tips was good, nice flavor of bbq sauce. The pork chops were the biggest I have ever had in my life. Check them out and let me know what yall think.

I've been wanting to try this place for YEARS, drove 500 miles all the way from Wisconsin to try it and it did not disappoint!!! The half chicken was tender and juicy, the mac was nice and cheesy and the sauce was tangy and spicy. It's everything I expected and then some. Fantastic, I cannot wait to come back again!
