Okdongsik

"With his take on dwaeji-gukbap, Chef Ok Dong-sik has managed to singlehandedly change any preconceptions the local diners previously had about the hearty pork and rice soup dish Koreans hold near and dear to their hearts. Think bacon-thin slices of silky tender pork meat piled on a bed of rice, all submerged in his trademark consommé-like clear broth. The 'extra large' portion comes with double the amount of meat. The space is limited and only 100 bowls of gukbap are sold daily so get here early." - Michelin Inspector

The Best Dishes Eater Editors Ate This Week, October 2023 - Eater NY

"I was super psyched to get seats at the popular Okdongsik, the sensational slip of a restaurant (in collaboration with Hand Hospitality) like the one in Seoul with the same name. It’s genius and I’m not sure how it stays open, with so few seats and such reasonable prices, but I’m grateful it’s there. The menu features basically two dishes: a rich and satisfying pork broth with rice on the bottom, dweji gomtang ($18), and the very filling kimchi mandoo ($12) stuffed with tofu and pork. Served with barley tea in this case, both were fantastic." - Eater Staff

Okdongsik Review - Koreatown - New York - The Infatuation

"If you weren’t one of the lucky few who got tickets to BLACKPINK’s NYC show last summer (they sold out within a few minutes), you can drown your sorrows in a bowl of soup from this year’s second most exciting visit by way of Korea. Seoul-based restaurant Okdongsik is in NYC until April 2023 in a collaboration with HAND hospitality (Atomix, Her Name Is Han). They specialize in pork gomtang served gukbap-style, and their version is a particularly delicate soup with a light, clear broth and super thin pieces of pork. The 10-seat Koreatown pop-up only serves this one soup, and it's the perfect pitstop this rainy season." - Neha Talreja

옥동식 Okdongsik - PORK GOMTANG (REGULAR) 11000 won - KIMCHI DUMPLING (4 PCS) 7000 won Featured in the Michelin Guide since 2018, Okdongsik offers a minimalist menu with just two items: pork soup with rice and kimchi dumplings. Simple, yet beautifully executed. The pork gomtang broth was clean, delicate, and deeply satisfying. I could have easily finished another bowl. Generous portions of thinly sliced pork were tender, flavorful, and paired perfectly with their house-made pepper paste. The kimchi dumplings were massive, packed to the brim with bold, spicy-sour filling. A hearty, comforting meal that’s absolutely worth seeking out. The restaurant has only 10 seats, so I recommend joining the virtual queue on Catchtable. That way, you can explore the area while waiting for your turn.

In Seoul’s vibrant culinary scene, Okdongsik has achieved something remarkable by elevating a humble classic, pork gomtang, into a refined art form. Awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand, this small restaurant dedicates itself to a single, perfected dish. A shimmering, crystal-clear broth that defies the typical image of a rich pork soup. This clean, consommé-like liquid is the result of slow-simmering high-quality pork meat, not bones, creating a pure, delicate flavor. Arranged beautifully over a bed of rice are paper-thin slices of tender pork, which are gently cooked to perfection when the hot broth is poured over them. This is not just a soup; it’s a testament to precision and the beauty of minimalism

Incredible pork gomtang in a cozy atmosphere. This is one of those specialty restaurants that serves just one really great dish. Fire kimchi too. Note: It’s very popular, so you have to sign up for a spot on the queue on CatchTable ahead of time.

Short menu, but beautifully executed. Go early and book a table, there's only room for 10 guests.

This place was so worth the hype. The food is clean and the atmosphere was quiet and intimate. I like how they elevated this meal to a different experience. I went early to put my name to save my spot. I needed wait 15 mins even though I went 30 mins early. Some people go early to write their name. There’s a mall nearby so I recommend to eat at this place and walk around the mall

Best pork soup rice for those who like clear soup and thinly shaven meat. The domestic ingredients kimchi is also delicious!

One of the best meals we had in Seoul. The place is small and charming. There’re very few items on the menu, all of them amazing. The dumplings were big and tasty, the kimchi on the side just amazing, and the main soup dish too. Absolutely recommend. It is worth the wait!
