"The last remaining Old Hickory House in metro Atlanta is still going strong after more than 50 years. A barbecue institution, Old Hickory House serves its meats smoked over hickory wood for hours, including its popular baby back ribs, chopped pork, and half chickens. Make sure to order Brunswick stew and a side of the delicious squash casserole. The restaurant also doubles as a meat-and-three, serving classic Southern plates like country fried steak or fried catfish paired with cornbread and a choice of two vegetable sides." - Missy Frederick, Beth McKibben

"Once a metro Atlanta chain, the last remaining Old Hickory House is still going strong in Tucker after over 50 years. This barbecue institution serves hickory-smoked meats on its menu like baby back ribs, sliced or chopped pork, and half chickens. Don’t pass on the squash casserole or Brunswick stew here. For those not into ‘cue, Old Hickory House also doubles as a meat-and-three, of sorts, with platters such as country fried steak and catfish served with a corn bread muffin and a choice of two vegetable sides." - Eater Staff

We had the peoples platter and I had the chopped pork platter with macaroni and cheese with coleslaw. Rob had macaroni and Brunswick stew. We had garlic bread a coke and iced tea. We finished with key lime pie. The best is the Brunswick stew hands down. The chopped pork was good and so were the ribs. The portions are small. The key lime pie is not made there probably an Edward’s pie. No whipped cream added. Plain in appearance but good. Prices have gone up and portion size much smaller. I’ll be back for Brunswick stew next time. I have been going to the Old Hickory House since the early 60’s and the smell from the outside of the building draws you in.

Finally got to try Old Hickory House in Tucker, GA, after my friends Beth & Luis hyped it up. Got there right as they opened, and the parking lot was already semi-full. (Don’t worry, there’s extra parking on the side!) This place has strong old-school diner vibes, with great service, a massive menu, and tasty food at a great price. I tried: Barbecue Omelet with Beef: Loaded with beef and paired with thick, non-watery grits – perfection. Short Stack with Bacon: Pancakes were tasty, but I wish they had some crisp edges. The bacon was thick, crispy, and just right. Country Chicken & Gravy Biscuit Platter: The real MVP here! Perfectly battered chicken with flavorful gravy on a biscuit that’s crunchy on the outside, buttery on the inside, and doesn’t fall apart. All this for just $5! The atmosphere is lively with families, and there’s a bar-style seating option if you’re dining solo. Nicki, my server, was amazing and made sure my drink never hit the bottom. Highly recommend for a solid breakfast experience. Give it a try and let me know what you think!

Google
First and last visit, very disappointing. 1. The coffee was served out of a styrofoam cup. 2. We ordered French toast with bacon and a salmon croquette, pancakes “Kid cakes”, and a Country fried steak dinner with collards and fried okra. Once the waiter put the ticket in, the food was already prepared and sitting for at-least 10 minutes.. the gravy developed a fat cap. Collards were tangy and tasted like they were canned. The salmon cake tasted like it was precooked and refrigerated. The cornbread was dry and the garlic bread was extra buttery with no garlic. 3. When it was time to pay for the bill, the waitress over charged us for multiple things. She charged us for a kids meal, we ordered pancakes. Then she charged me for a cowboy size country steak dinner but i asked for a regular size. The manager “corrected” the mistake but it was still wrong. On the bill the manager charged me $4.99 for Kid cakes but on their menu it specifically states $4.49. This is why it’s so important to look at your check thoroughly because businesses try to take advantage of you. The lady at the front doesn’t have much enthusiasm or hospitality, very rude. Overall, we enjoyed the fried okra and pancakes. The atmosphere was calm, and quiet. Due to this experience, we will not return nor recommend to anyone.

Tried this for lunch with my brother in law. I ended up getting breakfast: 🥞, sausages, and grits. My spouse got pulled pork platter with baked beans and Brunswick stew. I thoroughly enjoyed the sausage and grits. As they were cooked to perfection.. Spouse said his bbq was very good and flavorful. I hope we’re in the area again so I can try there bbq

Google
The server was either Mexican or Spanish but was not personable at all, the food was definitely old, it came out and room temperature not even warm or hot. The health department needs to be called the old taste was extreme and someone can get sick. I ate their a while back and it was amazing but this change in food quality and service I won't be going back. The only good thing about this place is the older cashier, her personality is top tier.

Google
The service was great, and it is a cool place to visit and ear if you're a Smokey and the Bandit fan. The boys had the burgers, and they were amazing. My daughter had a hot dog, and it looked like something from a roller grill at a gas station. I had the People's Choice, and it had several sliced meats and ribs. The ribs were amazing, but the sliced meat was dry and tasted like it had been out for days. Basically, it was not bad for the price and great service, but I will be getting a burger if we ever go back.

Google
The food was great and all the staff were very friendly. The fruit cobbler was very good with the ice cream and their banana pudding was home-made. Their Brunswick stew is the best I've had since moving to Georgia 10+ years ago. Family style atmosphere.

Google
Just as advertised….local barbecue joint that appears to be a favorite of the vintage group. Dark wood interior with booths. Food was good and plentiful. Service was excellent. I had a Country Mex omelette and my wife the pulled pork sandwich with Brunswick stew. I’m not sure if it’s Atlanta’s best, as advertised on their tee shirts, but it wasn’t bad. It’s a pretty stiff barbecue market. A private dining room is available. Nice meal bar and you can see the barbecue oven.

Yelp
I love HH for breakfast. Always get the plate w/ scrambled eggs & cheese, bacon, grits & biscuits. The size of their biscuits varies based on who's making them that day. Today was a good biscuit day. Nice & large. I've never really been a fan of their BBQ except that I do love their Brunswick stew. But based on other reviews, maybe I should give the ribs a try sometime. They're always packed on Saturday which is when we've visited recently. Servers are always nice & attentive. We'll return for sure.

Yelp
I have been going to Hickory House since I was around 10 years old. They had multiple locations back then. Fast forward z60 years and they are down to one location and I was near there this past week and no way was I going to not stop! The food has alway been incredible and my meal tonight was as great as always. The ribs were done to perfection, they rub the ribs in their house bbq the last few minutes while still on the smoker which is perfection. There were enough meaty ribs to take a few home for a second meal. The Brunswick stew is second to none that I have ever had. The meat to vegetable amount is just right. The baked beans are so good and the Texas toast is hot, garlicky and crispy crunchy! I guess my timing was perfect when I got there the restaurant was full and I was still able to dine a booth to sit in and the service was still very quick and my service was very professional in her attention to my needs. Definitely highly recommend this BBQ Restaurant is your in the area and want some great bbq that they have had decades to perfect their way!

Yelp
Wow! So glad we chose this place on the way home from a road trip this weekend! Some of the best BBQ I've ever had! We ordered online and the 30 min wait was worth it! The place was packed on a Sat. The chopped chicken was perfect in my opinion; not too sauced up so you can be healthy if you want. The thick BBQ on the side was so thick I wasn't sure if it was a side of baked beans at first! Collards were just what I expect from a side of southern greens but my favorite side was tbe potatoes salad! More potatoes than I normally get in each side and a great slightly sweet slightly tangy flavor! Large portion of chicken and not one but TWO delicious cornbread muffins ! I will be back to sit in next time. Staff was friendly and had a southern charm in the air. My dogs in the parking lot loved the smells

Doug J.

Yelp
The last one remaining in Atlanta and very blessed it's near our home. Great veggies, brunswick stew and bread. I normally get pulled pork plate. Grandson devoured the ribs on a recent visit. Friendly prompt service. Have also had breakfast there many times. Great biscuits/gravy!

Phillip T.

Yelp
For starters, the service was great. Very kind and attentive server. We have only lovely things to say about the service. The food is bland and tastes microwaved. Nothing tasted freshly prepared and there were no flavors. The crowd is elderly and the ambience is that of Piccadilly. They were busy and it seemed to be mostly regulars. We wouldn't eat here again, but I can see how some people would enjoy the old school nature of it.

Rebecca H.

Yelp
My family had the best experience here. Our waitress was wonderful & attentive. The food hit the spot. Fresh off the grill hot. I've lived in Atlanta for 40 years and never been to this place. I always drove by it but never enter until this weekend. All I have to say I am disappointed in myself for waiting this long for all that yumminess

Mick D.

Yelp
Good, simple breakfast fare and solid bbq and meats. All the hyperbole in my prior review has been remedied. I've visited many times since then and I've never been disappointed. The pancakes are large and filling. My go-to: an egg and cheese biscuit. (It's a big biscuit.)

Dan M.

Yelp
Well I decided to go there for my first time for breakfast and I was not disappointed very very good service was great, food was great and the service was quick but Fresh now I will be back for dinner to check it out. I was very impressed with the layout on the inside for me it was like stepping into a Texas barbecue. The amount of food was great so the price was OK good.

Ahmad W.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite meals from this restaurant. I get it from time to time. The plate actually comes with garlic bread or 2 corn muffins. I always ask for the muffins with the butter to pour into them. The garlic bread is good also. I already ate my muffins and one piece of my country fried steak. I got Mac and cheese and sweet potato casserole. This food is delicious.

Jeff C.

Yelp
Grew up on this place a staple in Dekalb county known for its great bbq and veggies. The staff is a mix if young and old and very courteous and nice something lost in some places. Ambiance us the rustic old cabin like a Lincoln log vibe. I love that this institution is still open after all these years!

John C.

Yelp
Not a place for bbq meats. They are not bbq'ing the meats. They are roasting it in a gas fired open front oven. Tough, dry, no fat content. Veggies are to die for. I just order vegetables from them.

Myrna S.

Yelp
It had been a while since visiting old hickory house. So decided to visit on Sunday and definitely was not disappointed. Absolutely Loved the baby back ribs. Will be going back soon!

Tamara F.

Yelp
Delicious breakfast!! My 5 year old chowed down. Big homemade biscuits, delicious grits, and the bacon wow! Coffee super good. Anything we had was good. If I could have sat there til I was hungry for lunch I would have lol.

Eric B.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere and food was good. Great service they made you feel like you was at home with family

Jeff P.

Yelp
In my travels, I eat breakfast all over town. I eat local owned most of the time. For 20 years Old Hickory has been the best imho. Upon arrival, big , fluffy biscuits. Great service & priced better than most for breakfast. Don't miss it.

Theresa S.

Yelp
$12 through grub hub for 4 teeny (size of teeny goldfish), chili size of Dixie cup for $6. Value is not there and quality was meh. Will find other places

Nig N.

Yelp
Walked in to a friendly staff greeting. My meal for take out was ready. I was given a complimentary Arnold Palmer tea and boy was it good! I got to my hotel ready to eat and it was still warm and oh, so juicy. The ribs had such a great smoke flavor I'd eat a whole rack easy and they were fall off bone juicy! The brisket was good, I'd dip it in there house BBQ and be in heaven. The side's, I got stew and potatoe salad. I enjoyed both. I thought the stew was not BBQ related however it was good for stew! I can see why they have a wait to be seated and I'll be back

Sandra M.

Yelp
They are consistent in offering the best sides around! I get their half BBQ chicken but my mom loves the ribs!

Wendy G M.

Yelp
I ordered two bbq rib platters with mixed greens and Mac and cheese this past Sunday. I also ordered a vegetable plate that included Mac and cheese, from Old Hickory House in Tucker, What I ordered versus what I received. I was expecting flavorful, tender, moist bbq ribs. But, I received dry, overcooked bbq ribs that seem like they had been around for awhile. Not one platter had Mac and cheese that I ordered, rather they gave me either what they had or what they wanted me to have. I do not know if they were our of the Mac and cheese because, I was never told that it was not available, and I was never asked if I would prefer to have a different side because there was no Mac and cheese. I would not write this review if I had not had problems with this particular restaurant before. I ordered a week ago, one bbq rib platter, country fried steak, chicken wings and key lime pie. I never received the country fried steak, nor the wings or slice of pie, or the correct sides either, except for the rib platter. Instead, I received two bbq rib platters. Previously that day, I had called the restaurant because the food delivery service said that the restaurant did not have an order for me. I spoke to someone at the restaurant who after minutes of being on hold, told me that their printer was messed up and my order did not print out. But she asked someone to check for my name and confirmed I indeed had ordered. That time the bbq ribs were fresh, and flavorful, but the rest of the order was missing, and it took me more than an hour and a half to get my food and the customer service was poor at best.

Serene L.

Yelp
First off, this place though medium size has enough parking spot for twice the size of the restaurant. Upon entering, the decor reminds me EXACTLY what a diner looked like when I was much younger, reading books back in Singapore. Therefore it was kind of fun & cute for me, feels like I stepped into those novels I used to read. I sat at the bar counter as I was dining alone. Sat next to someone, chatted up a little and a friendly server across the bar took my orders. 2 over-easy, bacon, sausage & grits - ok I was hungry. 10 minutes later, my food came with a huge, warm, soft biscuit. I gobbled it all down. Took a bite of the biscuit because it was inviting, and it did not disappoint. Will be back again, with a friend next time.

Charles M.

Yelp
Quality is number one. Service is great. Staff keeps the traditional food and atmosphere going year after year. I have been a fan since 19777

Skip G.

Yelp
I had heard about this place and had been told how good the pork BBQ was. Wow, what a disappointment. Only good thing was the low price. Also had the hushpuppies BUT they had So Much sugar in them I only ate one. The ribs and the burgers looked good so if I was ever out that way again I would give the ribs a shot.

Melody T.

Yelp
There are few places in Atlanta left that feel authentic to the region. Old Hickory House is one of those remaining treasures. The prices compared to more upscale barbecue joints are more than fair. You won't pay $15 for a pork sandwich here! The food is also delicious and authentic. There are ample sides to choose from. The service is always excellent. I get the feeling there is a low turnover rate on servers and that folks stick around. That's usually a good sign! I was sorry to hear of the owner's recent death. I hope they keep going for a long time.

Juan V.

Yelp
My first time eating here was a chore it's hard to mess up breakfast. They need to update the inside quickly. The staff was friendly my server she was great very attentive. However I made a mistake and ordered the salmon croquettes yikes they were horrible you get two big patties. But the taste was just not there I did all I could do just to eat one. After the first bite with nothing on it I thought let try hot sauce NOPE then ketchup NOPE NOPE !!!! I hate to waste food this time I did not take it with me. Trust me I know how salmon croquettes taste I've been eating them all my life. I'm an OG Have a very simple recipe hit me up for it.

Jana B.

Yelp
Love their Brunswick Stew!!! We took some home and put it on baked potatoes! Sooo good for cold nights!

LotiDa V.

Yelp
I'm so disappointed. My family and I have been frequenting this establishment since I can remember. Today, I ordered online for a 1pm pick up. When I got there, the restaurant was full and several people were waiting on to-go orders. The man at the register wouldn't make eye contact with anyone unless they wanted to pay at the register. I could see my order on the counter. Finally, after about 10 minutes, I went to the register like I was going to pay and he gave me my order. When I asked for some crackers, he said he could sell me a bag of them. Really??? I just spent $40 on Brunswick stew! Icing on the cake, a sweet man was waiting patiently to make a take out order and I mentioned this to the cashier. He rolled his eyes and continued ignoring everyone in the takeout area. Unfortunately, this will probably be the last time I visit here again. You can do much better Hickory House!!!

Trish S.

Yelp
Seriously, this place has the best barbeque in Tucker, if not all of Atlanta! They also serve breakfast and lunch items that are not prepared on the pit and everything is absolutely delicious. I started coming here for a work events where I would order large portions of items for pick-up to serve approximately 40 employees for breakfast. The smoked bacon is always a hit, and the biscuits are huge and tasty, the sausage gravy and grits are also devoured. The staff has always been super friendly and accommodating and as this is a large order, they make sure I have place settings, plastic ware and plenty of jelly and butter. But, personally I come here for everything else. The baby back ribs are fall off the bone amazing, the barbeque sauce is on point and their sides are incredible. A charming, friendly, family atmosphere with wonderful customer service. You won't leave disappointed.

Bri P.

Yelp
Looking for AUTHENTIC southern food and great BBQ? This is the place. Just don't look around too much, this place is a hole-in-the-wall, but the food is SO GOOD! Good food doesn't need fancy bells and whistles. The waitstaff is friendly, they'll take care of ya the way your momma will at her house. I always get the Brunswick stew and I'll argue with anyone that it's the best stew in the area. Favorite side items include squash casserole, the green beans (the best green beans you'll ever put in your mouth) and the Mac & cheese. Go for breakfast (be prepared to wait if you're going during the church rush time) and get the chicken and gravy biscuit and then you can thank me later. We go here about 3-4 times a month and never had a bad meal.

JoAnn L.

Yelp
Great food, sides taste southern Busy for a reason Found it by chance, will return Thanks

Bill Patterson P.

Yelp
Breakfast homemade the very best biscuits eggs bacon link sausage biscuits money can buy. I have been coming here for 30 years whenever I can I visit Hickory house so delicious

Andy P.

Yelp
No real brisket No burnt ends Breakfast closes at noon Weekdays Restaurant A/C does not work in the Front dining room Its not real BBQ without real brisket Place a door on the garbage bread Outside area. Then go buy a smoker and whoever gets to work first, throws the brisket on at 250° In the morning. You can prep them the night before. The smell alone, will increase sales and help pay for the positive expenses more importantly you will offer real brisket & burnt ends !!!

Graham D.

Yelp
An absolute institution. No flaws. Just good food and friendly folks. BBQ is on point.

Thom A.

Yelp
Without a doubt the best BBQ place ever! I've been eating here since the mid-1970's! Love their Baby back Ribs, Brunswick Stew, Slaw and Texas Toast! Yum! Yum! Also I would be remiss if I did not compliment the great service every day! But especially today we had a server in training, Sasha & server trainer, Noelena ! They were a dynamic duo! With the BBQ pit literally just behind the service counter the fragrant smell of hickory smoke and meat slowly cooking permeates the entire restaurant! The service and customer care excellence makes for a sunny experience! As their slogan goes: "Put some South in your Mouth!"

Mitch B.

Yelp
The best BBQ sauce ever. Best BBQ and the best Brunswick stew. I just wish we had one in Peachtree City. Nothing here compares.

Kunal G.

Yelp
One of finest brunch place in Atlanta. This place is not so far away from the I-285, its very close to the exit. Let me start with food. Amazing food, we had the fried chicken with biscuit and gravy, scrambled eggs on the side. This is their one of the popular items and practically you will find on everyones table . Chicken was cooked to perfection. Biscuit is freshly made and you can say that because the biscuit will be hot. Their gravy us to die for. My wife found it less salty and pepperish but this is something on personal preference. Every tablr has salt and pepper to add as per your taste. Coming to ambience. This place has little old rustic look. But it fits to their name OLD Hickory House. You go in and if you find seat you grab it. All the staff are so warm and welcoming that when you sit you have a big smile and when you leave you have big smile. You will find lot of parking spot outside but on weekends you might have to wait a little bit. Food - 4/5 Ambience - 4/5 Parking - 4/5

Deby F.

Yelp
Absolutely awful!! Don't waste your time or money!!we couldn't eat any of the food. So salty. They need to order the low sodium gravy packets. And it supposed to be white gravy on chicken fried steak not brown!!

Amy B.

Yelp
Everything we had tasted great, especially the cole slaw. The service was friendly too.

Danny M.

Yelp
Breakfast here was mid in all honesty. Bbq bussin. I've eaten here numerous times. Feels a little weird because a bunch of old locals eat here. Would recommend the crowd pleaser plate. Only issue is the brisket can be very dry...

Rene D.

Yelp
Finished our load and was headed out of town. Called this place off 285N to see if they were open.... yes we are they said! Woo hoo. It's pretty much hit and miss now a days. We asked to try the Brunswick stew. She brought us out two small samples..wow it was delish. It's not so good everywhere. We both love this one!! Ordering it next time! Omg I ordered the ribs with okra and a salad. Oh my... it was so delish.. I ate it all. Bf had the People pleaser plate. Wow it was the best that we had in a lonnnnng time. After all was said n done we ordered 10 smoked wings to go with cole slaw for later. We looked in r bag and they gave us some more nana pudding!! Wow nice folks for sure. I'm bookmarking this place for a later date!

Kimberly T.

Yelp
April 19th 2023 I was served spoiled food items. Yes, more than one item was spoiled. I'd taken several spoonfuls of the Lima beans and bread items before noticing the smell. My stomach began gurgling and I put the stomach upset and smell together. When I explained to the waitress the the food was spoiled, she checked with the cooks. They acknowledged that old and new food were cooked together. I should have been given the entire bill free but was still given a bill nearing $40 of a meal I could no longer eat. Will not dine there again.

Ginger J.

Yelp
Was in Atlanta on a Sunday afternoon and just had to stop. I grew up eating at Old Hickory' House and have raved about their Brunswick Stew to anybody that would listen since I moved back to the South. I remember their sandwiches too. I always got an "inside sliced pork on garlic bread". Well that's what I had and it was just as great as I remember it. I heartily recommend it to anyone. The sauce is sweet and spicy and can't be beat. However, they have changed the recipe for their Brunswick Stew and now use ground meat instead of pulled or chopped meat. It's still good but just not the same as it was 40-50 years ago. I'll still stop by every time I can and would recommend the pork but I can't rave about the Brunswick Stew anymore.

Darryl S.

Yelp
Their BBQ is may good but breakfast was not good. Hard biscuits, cold chicken, but very nice servers and the grits were not that bad. I won't be back.

Rashmi N.

Yelp
Had chicken & gravy breakfast with scrambled eggs and side of sausage came with 2 big biscuits. It was delicious had every last bit of it. Had better gravy than this but biscuits were the best I have ever had, they were fluffy, soft and buttery. Chicken was perfectly cooked disappointed that it was fried but not crispy, still delicious though. Place has a very homely vibe. staff is very friendly and attentive social distancing was in place too. Will definitely go back.

Eddie T.

Yelp
The flavors were nice. Fries, chilli, ok. Bbq sauce was good, but the chicken was dry. Either temp too high, or cooled to long.

Andrew M.

Yelp
This place is terrific. The BBQ was good, the speed of service was quick and they even sang me happy Birthday (twice!) thank you guys for great hospitality and kindness. I wish more restaurants did the same.

Ray W.

Yelp
I've been going to Old Hickory House since it opened. The owner George is in his 90's and is there just about every day. We love their breakfast. Try the chicken gravy biscuit! Lunch and dinner are always good and while known for their BBQ they always have fresh veggies and some of my favorite cornbread muffins. Daily lunch specials with meat two sides bread and drink for around $10. Best Brunswick Stew around! Friendly staff and customers.

Andre' M.

Yelp
I bet that the breakfast here is pretty good. It's a cool atmosphere that reminds me of my childhood. The greatest movie of all time, Smokey and The Bandit, had a scene filmed in their sister location and this place looks just like the one in the movie where Buford T Justice ordered his Diablo and a Dr Pepper to go. Remember, he was in a godamm hurry. The people inside are all very friendly. Unfortunately, the food is mediocre and extremely salty. It just wasn't enjoyable. They lost a star from me because somehow an extra four dollars or so was somehow added on to my bill. The way that they responded to it was a bit odd which makes me wonder if it wasn't a mistake. I didn't receive any apology either for the overcharge. A simple apology would have really helped. It's a shame. This place could be really cool.

Billy M.

Yelp
I'm a fan of Hickory House . This was not their best effort. Those were the driest overcooked ribs that I have ever had from this restaurant. That can do better than this. I was so disappointed and my wife was disgusted with her meal. I don't know what happened, it will be sometime before I go back.

Bob C.

Yelp
The place was full of diners but the service was prompt and friendly. The food was good and hot. Very good vegetables, cornbread and Brunswick stew. The décor is straight from the 70's but it's a nice look back. Surrounded by modern apartments, the residents have it made. It's a bit of a drive for me but I will be back for sure.

William M.

Yelp
i bday been to an Old Hickory House in a decade... I was headed to the airport and had a few minutes so I took a road trip for some BBQ and Brunswick Stew...I was not disappointed. I ordered a Chopped Pork Sandwich to go (sides on Stew and Slaw) and an extra Sliced Beef Sandwich. The first bite transported me to many Saturday afternoons growing up eating g Old Hickory House after a long day working outside. Everything was fresh, delicious, and true to the Original.
