Best Charleston Bars Lounges | Eater Carolinas

"Go for the extensive whiskey list, but stay for the creative takes on cocktails like the libation named Lunch for Homer, which is Old Overholt, doughnut milk, orange citrate, brown sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla. The second location in Park Circle has an expanded food menu." - Erin Perkins

Great drinks & atmosphere. My bartender Jeff was personable and took care of everyone. Would recommend

Google
It was nice. Went on a Saturday for brunch. Food was good, service was a little stiff and quiet but they sure can make tasty cocktails. The bar doesn't have a foot rail which can make it uncomfortable to sit there for a while so maybe eat at a table. The whisky selection is impressive. Can't wait to pop in on a cold day & get warmed up with two fingers of scotch.

Google
The best bar in Park Circle, and maybe even the Charleston area. Huge selection of Bourbons and Whiskeys. Friendly, knowledgeable staff that make good recommendations.

Google
The atmosphere was so nice and laid back and the decor and lighting added to that. The service was very good. I'm not a whiskey drinker but I tried it. I also got a hamburger fries and brussel sprouts that was very good. They also have whiskey tasting. I really enjoyed myself and will go back.

Amazing whiskey selection and a staff that knows their stuff. Katherine was a great server. Food was excellent. Menu has some classics for everyone but lots of adventures as well

Last night 3/26/25 Beth and I made our first visit to Paddock & Whiskey in Park Circle for a cocktail before dinner at another restaurant in the area. We were joined by our close friends Mark and Debbie to celebrate our birthdays which fall with a month of each other. The drinks were served by one of the best servers I’ve met, cheerful, knowledgeable and friendly. The atmosphere with its huge back bar, brick walls and inviting semicircular booths was outstanding! Make the opportunity to visit this establishment, you won’t be disappointed! Cheers, Steve

Gorgeous rustic ambiance with exposed rafters and brick walls. Comfortable booth seating. Great whiskey collection and bar. Manhattan could be better. The Old Fashioned was absolutely delicious. Unisex bathrooms were clean too. Will definitely go again.

Google
I am obsessed with Paddock & Whisky! My boss loves this place and I kept wanting to go but never making it...when I would pass by I assumed it was an Irish bar. It is totally unassuming. And then I went in and fell in love first with the aesthetics and ambiance. Then really enjoyed the drinks - love trying the weekly special. And by the third time I went I tried the food and fell even more in love. The fries are the best fries on earth with the sauce. These people even know how to make a veggie plate one of the best foods you will eat. It's soo good. Highly, highly recommend.

Yelp
One of my favorite places in park circle to have a nice cocktail. Great drinks, amazing atmosphere, and incredible staff! We are by no means regulars, but we've been to this location several times and are always impressed. This time we came on a Saturday afternoon. There was plenty of seating and the staff were attentive and knowledgeable. Their drinks are perfection and beautifully presented. We did get a basket of fries as an app this time and they were so delicious! Served very hot and the bearnaise sauce was good enough to lick the ramekin. They have a vast whisky and bourbon collection and bring the bottle to the table along with the glencairn. They have a full bar with nice wine options as well. I haven't had dinner, only a few apps but they are always excellent. We've never been disappointed here!

Yelp
Great little bar with very friendly bartenders and general manager! We had a great time and the drinks were awesome! We will be back!

Yelp
This bourbon bar in Charleston is a favorite of ours, and we are sure we stop in at every time we are out that way. It's a relaxing place to have a drink and if you can get there for happy hour, do it! They have $9 Old fashioned featuring Elijah Craig. Bartenders are incredibly knowledgeable about all the bourbon offered and are happy to answer questions. There is a large bar area with seating but also little tables and booths inside the open concept. Plenty to look at as there is shelf after shelf filled with practically any bourbon you have heard of

Yelp
Really good food! Friendly wait staff. Great ambiance. Very laid back. Love attending events here.

Yelp
We have been here multiple times being bourbon lovers and we will never get over how delicious your bourbon cocktails are. Love the atmosphere and the food too, but we come for the bourbon. Bartenders are always willing to talk to your about your questions and preferences too.

Yelp
Went to brunch this morning with some friends. The chicken sandwich was stellar. The chicken was cooked perfectly and so large that I had enough meat for almost another sandwich. The chicken was so tender I was able to cut it with a fork against the grain. The only issue was my friends biscuits and sage gravy was not to their liking. It was oddly more oily than the fried chicken. She eats here regularly and say it is extremely unusual for anything to be less than stellar and I take her word for it. The waitress removed it from the bill without even being asked.

Yelp
This might be my new favorite Happy Hour spot! This beautiful restaurant and bar has such a classy ambiance with the dark wood bar and low lighting and shelves upon shelves of liquor. Their Happy Hour is from 4-6 and it is worth the early trip! Domestic bottles are superrrr cheap. They have an old fashioned for $9 with Elijah Craig as the bourbon! The French fries and the brussel sprouts might be the best in the town! I liked them so much I visited 2 days in a row. The bowl of fries is HUGE and plenty big enough to share or eat on your own I won't tell! The bartenders are super attentive and patient. We had great service and really enjoy sitting at the bar and relaxing. Can't wait to try the whole menu!

Yelp
We recently did a tasting in the "vault". The tasting was done by Heavy and he was awesome. We drink a lot of bourbon but after this tasting we learned so much about the drink we love. There was no rush, he was super engaging and fun. We had a blast and strongly recommend doing this, regardless of your bourbon knowledge level. After the tasting we had great apps and food. We love this place!

Yelp
Wow is the first word I think of with this place! Situated on a corner in Park Circle, you walk inside to a wood atmosphere reminiscent the f an old library. Cute circle booth seating and plenty of bar seating, water served in recycled whiskey bottles. I loved everything about it including the food, drinks and service! We lucked out at happy hour and ordered the fries- to die for- and plenty to share! Also ordered the baked oysters, nestled in beer cheese, different and tasty. The table ordered old-fashioned drinks, absolutely delicious. They do a nice job here and the vibe was relaxed and comfortable. 6 stars!
google avatar

Victoria G.

Yelp
Love the ambiance here! Would make a great place for a reception or event with the exposed brick walls and the laid back, classy atmosphere. The drinks were delicious and very strong (in a good way). Our server was helpful and gave suggestions for our group. We also ordered fries and fried Brussels and they were so good!! A perfect place to enjoy with friends and happy hour is daily 4-6 pm.
google avatar

Yelp
I've been here a few times. Stopped in after a show at the coliseum. Their liquor choices are vast, especially the Whiskey. The late night menu only has 4 choices, Oysters, a burger, a chicken sandwich, and a bowl of fries. We wanted something, but nothing too heavy. So the fries were satisfactory. The specialty cocktails are unique, and the wine list has a good variety to choose from. Nice atmosphere.

Yelp
Paddock and Whisky is one of my absolute favorite spots in Charleston. The drinks are affordable, the service is always great, they have a fab happy hour, and THE BEST FRIES EVER! Wide selection and they don't judge (normally) for not drinking the brown liquor haha. Great place for a happy hour after work or an easy going light dinner with friends.
google avatar

Brad P.

Yelp
All the best whiskeys. Willet Rye is my fav. Good prices for what your getting. Good food. Fast service. Nice people. Conveniently located right in park circle. I always get the brussel sprouts and french fries, but all the food is good. Quiet ambience usually. Open for lunch.

Yelp
We had such a lovely evening in this little village of North Charleston . We started with dinner at a great little Italian restaurant, checked out the cute Irish Pub and heard a live band at a brewhouse. Everywhere we went the food, drinks and service was amazing! Our last stop was the Paddock. Lovely spot however the three female bartenders were probably the worst service people we have ever encountered! None of them paid any attention to us or anyone else. I am not saying that they did not get us a drink but they had absolutely no interaction with anyone at the entire bar but themselves. I specifically tried to engage 3 different bartenders and basically no engagement from any of them. We only wanted one drink so had already signed the check and left 20% but I so wanted to take it back and change the tip amount! I didn't but I regret that!

Yelp
WOW!! I don't know how I have not been here sooner!!! Love the atmosphere!! The "living room" area is pretty nice, especially if you are a group of 4-8!! The staff was very knowledgeable about all the offerings and the LIBATIONS!! Let's just say I've had the BEST Old Fashion in the Charleston area here!!! It's perfect, but I would love to try theirs with a Filthy Cherry!! Also their Brussels sprouts are AMAZING!! If you haven't been, give them a go, you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Came here with a group of 4 for an early dinner. We shared some apps: the oysters, brussel sprouts, and fries. My husband and I shared the steak entree. The standout item of the night was the fries. They were hot and crispy and served with a really good bearnaise. The oysters were ok, more filling than actual oyster. The steak was not good. It was very tough and hard to chew and the chimichurri wasn't doing much of anything to help. For $26 we expected more. I will say the chai mule was delicious. Come for the drinks and stay for the fries...not much else.
google avatar

Kelly C.

Yelp
I'd come back here even if the service was bad and the drinks were overpriced because it is GORGEOUS. Luckily, the service was stellar and the drinks were... well, drinks are expensive but totally worth it. I had what is being advertised as basically an Orange Julius with bourbon. Yup. I'll take two, thanks. We split the fried chicken sandwich and the brussels. We cut off the extra chicken and brought it home with the side salad and brussels to make lunch the next day. I'll be back, for sure.

Yelp
Cool spot and gorgeous decor! Met friends here on a Saturday afternoon for lunch. Maggie was and excellent server and we never wanted for anything. They have a huge selection of bourbon and whisky if course, plus all the normal liquor options, wine and beer. Fried chicken sandwich was generous and large. The salad greens it came with were awesome, almost stole the show. Crispy mix of cabbages and lettuces in a creamy dressing with some cherry tomatoes was the perfect side. The French fries were crispy, hot and perfectly seasoned with a side of béarnaise. Brussel sprouts were roasted, well seasoned and topped with sesame seeds. Shrimp lettuce wraps had a small slice of a red pepper on top for a great kick in flavor, but easy enough to take off if spicy isn't your thing. Tables in the dining room are made from thick slabs of wood and just beautiful. The bar cover almost the length of the dining room and had many folks stopping in for drinks. The sign inside the gender neutral restrooms on the back of the door cracked me up. Go check it out!
google avatar

Aunt J.

Yelp
A wonderful experience! Exceptional ambience, delightful staff, impressive drinks, and scrumptious food all 10+ stars! Burgers and fries absolutely delicious, but the Brussels sprouts surpassed even those and may prove addictive. Can't wait to return!

Yelp
I've heard great things about Paddock & Whiskey and was excited to get a drink. I wanted to try something different so I went with the A Foolish Pleasure cocktail that came complete with Cheese Gin, Egg, Welch's Grape, Cognac, Maple & Cream. It was definitely an interesting drink that was sweet, creamy, and boozy. We also ordered the brussel sprouts and they were amazing. This bar has great ambience and service. Definitely recommend!

Yelp
I have always enjoyed going to Paddock & Whisky, however, last Friday night (08/25/23), we left pretty disappointed. My husband and I, along with another couple joined for drinks with two separate tabs. We closed out separately, and then realized that we had both paid the same exact amount (almost $100 each), and that could not have been correct. The couple we were with had less than my husband and I and it just didn't seem right. We waited in line to speak with the bartender (dark hair with an attitude), and we kindly explained to him that this was not correct. He explained to us that our tabs were already closed, and that there was nothing more that he could do. He told us to wait until Monday to see exactly what was charged to our accounts. The way he handled this situation was extremely disappointing. He talked down to us as if we were intoxicated and did not understand the situation. As a former food and beverage worker, I know that a check can be re-opened and adjusted. This bartender was rushing us out because the bar was busy and he simply did not want to deal with this situation. Like I said before, I really do enjoy Paddock & Whisky, but I will not be returning after this. We were over charged and completely overlooked when trying to resolve the issue.

Yelp
I was so excited for them to open and now they're finally here. A whisky bar in my very own neighborhood! I was out of town when the opened so I came in a week after. I didn't know what to expect because I hadn't been to the one in JI, but whatever expectations I did have, they were blown away. The inside is so cool and way bigger than I imagined it to be. They have whiskey and bourbon on shelves up to the ceiling and use a library ladder to get different bottles. You feel like you've been transported to downtown and I don't even mean Charleston. This place has the vibe I get from the whisky bars I've visited in San Fran and Boston. They were packed but luckily a small table opened up for the three of us to sit and have a cocktail. I had a sazerac and it was excellent. They served it with a little side car of the rinse in a shot glass instead of dumping it which was a nice touch to sip along side the drink. We wanted to order off the late night menu, but found out it was starting the next day so I'll be back for that. Plus I'd love to do a tasting or dinner in the private room which used to be the vault at Wells Fargo and is now covered in charred wood for a private evening with a small group. I also heard they're doing lunch too so I have countless reasons to go back aside from the booze. What an excellent addition to the Park Circle neighborhood!

Yelp
Great oysters. Great vibes. Nice bar tender fast service and good drinks. This place was nice and chill so vibrant i definitely will be back.

Yelp
Can't complain. Pretty good drinks as well as good service. And it's a cool looking bar with good ambiance and atmosphere too.

Yelp
We decided to come to Paddock & Whisky in Park Circle for drinks Friday night after our trip to Van Gogh in N. Charleston. What a cool trendy spot right in the heart of Park Circle, with an impressive selection of whisky on their menu, along with other cool cocktails and specials. The place was busy but we scored a cool semicircular leather couch right by the window to sit chat and enjoy our cocktails. To be honest I could have stayed there all night. The staff were friendly, helpful & efficient and the cocktails were on point. They did have a happy hour menu with some food in it. I didn't Pat much attention to be honest but they have one. It's an ideal spot to meet before dinner or after work. It can be cozy and or intimate depending on where you sit. Definitely check it out. It's cool and not too loud!!
google avatar

Harold N.

Yelp
This place was cute. It had great ambiance the minute that you walk in the door. Staff was wonderful. We got to sit in the back by the back door that doesn't get used. Food was delicious. Both sandwiches had a lot of bread but delicious none the less. Old Fashion was perfectly made. The Sazerac was made wonderfully. So glad that we didn't have to go downtown for this type of quality food and bev establishment. Would def recommend.
google avatar

Yelp
A must try for any bourbon enthusiast! Too many bourbons to count on the menu. You could probably come here 100 days in a row and try a different bourbon each time! A lot of store picks that are unique to Paddock & Whiskey too. They bring out the bottle of bourbon to look at it when you order it. Good selection of beer and wine for non bourbon drinkers too. Very reasonable price for domestic beer. I haven't tried any of the food on the menu but everything that came out of the kitchen looked amazing.

Yelp
Paddock and Whisky is a great spot in Charleston for a night out with friends. The atmosphere is cozy and chic, with an industrial vibe that's both trendy and welcoming. The selection of whiskies is impressive, and the bartenders are knowledgeable and happy to make recommendations. The food menu is also worth noting, with a variety of small plates and entrees that are perfect for sharing. The fried chicken sandwich is delicious, with a crispy coating and juicy meat. The staff is friendly and attentive, and the quality of the food and variety of drinks are great.
google avatar

Yelp
Saturday night music is a little loud for conversation, but damn they know how to make an excellent cocktail. Friends went on a Monday and said the sounds were a little more downplayed - but I will tell you, I definitely loved the play list - and their skills with a cocktail !
google avatar

Yelp
Best cocktail bar in Charleston. Very knowledgeable bartenders. Super unique ambience. I find myself coming back time and time again!

Yelp
Great place! Food was delicious. Service was excellent. Love the environment. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
One of my favorite cocktail places in Park Circle. Huge bourbon list, wonderful cocktails, both specialty and old standby's. Knowledgeable staff, interesting menu, mostly burgers oysters and bar fair.... 4-6 daily happy hour.
google avatar

Andrew J.

Yelp
The JI crew has a new spot in Park Circle and it is a winner. Beautiful space, same great drinks, knowledgeable staff... Well worth a visit. Been to this location 4 times now and will be back for several more.

Yelp
Do you like whiskey? Run don't walk to Paddock and Whisky's new location in park circle. Located in an old bank building the atmosphere is incredible! So is the selection of whiskey. The old fashioned is the best in town and always my go to. My only criticism is the small food menu. It left some to be desired. Maybe a bit fancy for the atmosphere in my opinion. More classic food with just a hint of fancy should be more the vibe

Yelp
1st impressions: - I loved the couch sitting but wish the area was bigger for more. - The DJ was a little loud but once 6pm hit, the regular music came on, ambiance set in and more people seemed to come in afterwards. The Playlist was great. - The drink creations were unique. A little something for everyone. Both of my Tik-ish Delights were wonderful. Unfortunately, the two Paddock Old Fashions had inconsistencies. The second was very strong compared and was almost like the maple was left out that time. - The service was great! Very friendly, conversation from all and helped with choices. - The New Revamped Burger was pretty tasty. I really liked the Apple Onion Jam and could eat that on a lot of things. Brioche has always been my bread of choice! The Pickled Green Tomatoes were a bit strong and took away most of the flavor from the whole burger though. I had to take them off after a few bites so I could taste everything else. - Waygu Eye of Round Steak is only served medium rare so make sure you like it that way just in case! This was also delicious. The Chimichurri is a nice touch. The baby potatoes were kind of hard and crunchy though and would have preferred them softer for sure like the sweet potatoes. The collard greens had a nice flavor. All in all I was happy to finally try out this restaurant/bar and look forward to coming in at different times of the day/night to try the other menu options just for then.

Robert S.

Yelp
Great chicken sandwich. 3 $ beers at happy hour. I just dig this place in North Charleston .

Yelp
Drinks were great. Fries are quite tasty. Not a fan of the catfish stew they had on special.... Contact me if you want to have a really good selling catfish stew!

Yelp
Horrible service!! My girlfriend and I stopped in for a drink after dinner. Great atmosphere, nice music, good chairs. We sit down only to not be greeted by anyone or asked by a server if we wanted a drink..she got up to go to the bar to get one for us only to be scolded by the bartender for trying to get a drink but sitting in chairs. I got up to tell him what we wanted. We get drinks. We sit down and enjoy ourselves...i go to the bathroom and the owner comes and scolds my date for stretching out on the couch. I confront the manager and he tells me to leave. Poor customer service, poor attitude. $50 drinks and treated like crap.

Yelp
Ok wow, we have now been 2 times in one week and couldn't be more thankful it's open!!! Great venue, amazing service. We started with some drinks and oysters and ate so quick we forgot a pic! Lol but outstanding!!!! We then had burger and strip and I would recommend to anyone. The bartender gave us a birthday shot for husband since they don't do dessert, and it was so delicious! So the food, service, and selection will have us back again real soon!! Love This new location!

Yelp
To be completely honest, I was not familiar with Paddock & Whisky at all. We joined to some friends after a local event in North Charleston. We wanted dinner. I'm not a whisky drinker but I was down for trying a local spot and the food. The inside is very small. The bar is beautiful. It's huge and has a lot of detail. It is very dark in there though. We sat at a table since there was four of us. The waitress was attentive as far as taking orders but didn't explain the menu or drinks. Not a big deal, but being that it was our first time it would of been nice. The food menu is very small and limited. We ordered the oysters and Brussels for appetizers. I preferred the oysters. The presentation was nice. I ordered the chicken sandwich and it was ok. I opted to drink water since I'm not a whisky drinker. I also noticed the glasses of wine were $22 a glass. A little much for my budget. My husband ordered the steak and it was awful. It was so dry and has no flavor. It didn't come with anything. And there wasn't any sides on the menu. I was a little taken back by that. So for my husband and I to eat dinner and him having our drink for $100 when I ordered a chicken sandwich wasn't really what I was expecting. The greens that came with my sandwich were on point though.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place while heading to a wine bar and decided whiskey actually sounded more my speed this evening. Ordered several whiskey sours and really appreciated how responsive the bartender was to my requests. Less simple syrup and over a single rock not a bunch of ice. Decently nice selection of whiskey! They were out of one of the bottles I had wanted to try, but they had plenty of alternatives to choose from. Highly recommend for a decent drink!

Yelp
I live right around the corner and have never been here. Horrible mistake I will never make again. I am truly amazed at this place!!! LD is an amazing bartender and the knowledge she has is amazing. Make sure you get her special drink. I'm calling it the Abby . The food is freaking amazing!! The fries all I need!!! But don't take my word for it. Come see it for yourself! Ask for LD!!!

Yelp
Took my son in his 21st - we had never been there , love the vibe we will back . Not crazy price great place to start a night out .

Yelp
Just come. It's the easiest way I can tell you that this place should become your regular spot. If the wall of bourbon doesn't get you excited, hit up my girl Lauren for the BEST cocktails ever. We gave her free reign for our drinks tonight and didn't disappoint. Not only is she an excellent mixologist, she's educated on what's she's making including the story behind the drink. I can't recommend this place enough.

Yelp
Stellar physical space. Its beautiful. If I was on a date here, Id probably find the interior more exciting to talk about and to than the dude (Charleston dating scene lol). Anyway Paddock & Whiskey has a stunning interior. Beautiful exposed brick, a very classic bar--a lovely space. We walked in and there was no hostess stand or person near the front to tell us where to go or what to do. Seat yourself? Wait for someone to seat you? Shoulder shrug. If there was a sign, I didnt see it. We walk in and wander to the end of the bar. I ask the bartender, so whats up? Do we seat ourselves or whats the deal? (I didnt ask like that, because I have more damn manners than that, but thats what my facial expression was saying.) She yells "seat yourself!" Cool. We have a seat and take a look at the menu. PRICEY. Way more than I'm willing to pay for a cocktail. But cant knock the place for that. Pricey is in the eye of the beholder... of the person paying the bill. My cocktail was smashing though. So enjoyable. Named "Rx" something. Our waitress was quirky and made me laugh. No objections about the service. The food (offering) was kind of a disappointment though. We arrived right around 5 but was told that they only had a limited menu of a couple of things like French fries and some other thing you drop in a fryer that I cant remember. I was really hungry and pretty disappointed that at 5 on a Saturday only a handful of fried things were offered, but oh well. We ordered fries because again, we were hungry, but $7-$8 bucks for a basket of precut frozen fries? Ehhhhhh. Dont come here hungry. Nice space for a drink before dinner somewhere. Kudos on the stellar decor and creative drinks.

Yelp
Great vibes and great food. Our cocktails were really good too. Downfalls - small menu.

Yelp
18 hours in Charleston? My tour guide had no time to waste on mediocre, we enjoyed some of the best of the best. And so according to him, that meant Paddock & Whiskey would earn a spot on this brief itinerary. Boyyyy oh boy I am glad it did. A late night menu starting at 10pm meant I could enjoy a full fried chicken sandwich on a sesame seed bun with pickles and all next to my fancy shmancy cocktail. It was the kind of late dinner that looks so luxurious and indulgent you almost feel like an important person while enjoying it. Especially when you're seated at a gorgeous bar, with perfectly attentive service. (It's possible that my tour guide might actually be a somewhat important person, and I am not denying that, however all my instincts say this is just how they do business here.) I didn't forget to mention how cool it is that this bar took the place of Wells Fargo, including a tasting room in an old vault. It just isn't as important as the fact that without that cheeky detail, this place is swell. I love that there is plenty of variety in seating: couches, high tops, tables, and of course my fave a bar with wait for it....purse hooks & OUTLETS. The outlet wasn't the highlight (it did mean I could charge my phone so that I would be able to hail the lyft home though, and for that reason it was maybe a runner up), the highlight for sure was the people - what an awesome crew. So if we are going with outlet as second place, that would put the smashed potatoes with herb crème fraiche third, followed up by the extra hot hot toddy. Honorable mention had to be The RX Bandit. For $13 it had all the elements of a bougie LA detox juice, at a fraction of the price AND with liquor, Monkey Shoulder to be more specific. I especially loved the fennel garnish. A++++ for an experience that is mega cool, feels exclusive, and is still welcoming.

Yelp
One of the neatest spots in Park Circle and awesome selection of whiskey. Beth is a rockstar!

Yelp
This place is INCREDIBLE. The staff rules. The food is excellent. Best cocktails in town. Great ambience. What's not to love?
