A Portland Boathouse Is Reopening As a Kid-Friendly Destination for Fish Sandwiches | Eater Portland

"A year-round indoor-outdoor spot on Hayden Island opening in early July, it will operate every day from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. with mornings (7–11 a.m.) devoted to coffee, pastries and grab-and-go grocery-style items and a lunch/dinner seafood-forward menu through the evening. The food leans heavily on Pacific Northwest seafood: Oregon albacore tuna salad, oversized panko-breaded fish sandwiches dusted in kettle chips and served on comically tiny buns, a local take on a lobster roll using Oregon Bay shrimp, seasonal Dungeness crab, and soft serve for dessert. The cocktail program, overseen by a veteran barkeep with his own syrups, mixes classics like the Dark and Stormy with inventive riffs such as a Banoffee Bahama Mama built with Hamilton dark rum, banana liqueur and a shot of soft serve. Housed in a renovated marina leasing office with a big lawn and family-focused layout (designed with help from Pistils Nursery), the place aims for an approachable, nostalgic vibe—somewhere between an original Dairy Queen and Maine’s Bagaduce Lunch—encouraging families and boaters to linger by the water." - Paolo Bicchieri

First of all the location, service and atmosphere are excellent! We decided to come by and have a couple of drinks. I would say that our mixed drinks were more like shots than a mixed drink. I'm self employed and I know how hard it is to manage a business. $30 for two shots is kind of steep. We will come back to try the food. It looks really good! Hopefully, I can raise the score after eating here.

They just opened this Monday and they serve Coava coffee, plenty of parking, boats, plenty of grass for the kids to run around, they have crayons for kids, high chairs, outdoor seating, just all in all, such a great spot! I got the B’s Bay Shrimp Roll and it’s a 10/10 🔥 Coffee was great as well!

All around, 5 stars! The fish n chip trout sandwich exceptional! Big Slap Cheeseburger, truly one of the best burgers around! Can’t wait to go back and try other menu items. So yummy! Fun, efficient staff, relaxing atmosphere with a stunning view!

Marina life is good We keep our sailboat in the marina and on weekends we are there. This place makes the old cafe look like a food truck. It has great outdoor seating overlooking the marina and the food and drinks are great. Nothing is as good as being on the Columbia enjoying a good meal and cocktails with friends. And there is PLENTY of seating. With good groves playing.

I wanted to like this place but...$24 for a tuna sandwich and nothing else is not my idea of a dinner. Once you put mayo on tuna it all kinda tastes the same. They were trying to be elevated and I think they missed the mark. The $18.50 burger was good but not worth it to go just for a burger. $10 for some ice and a bit of limeade is too much. They literally gave me a glass of ice to the rim. Sigh. I didn't rate service because there is none- you serve yourself. I like the play area for kids and the outdoor seating but- yeah... we won't be back.

My husband brought me home the "Big Slap" burger and curly fries for lunch. It traveled well & was delicious. The patty was perfectly cooked and the fries had just the right amount of crunch. I can't wait to try the rest of the menu!

Pretty good food with large outdoor seating area and a much smaller indoor seating area. Very kid friendly and a good place to go when the weather is good

As a floating home resident on Hayden Island we are are pleased to have such a great venue on our beautiful island where we can enjoy looking across at at all the boats in the marina and the Columbia River. The outside benches and seating areas are very welcoming and suitable for any size group. I look forward to visiting in the cooler weather as well when the fire pits will add extra ambiance. Really appreciated the attention to detail on the sawn log benches and all the native vegetation plantings on the property. Live music will also be a huge attraction. Food was great and the choices were interesting. Not just your usual bar food. The overall facility is well designed and everything from the bathrooms to the back deck showed thoughtful design and execution.

Yelp
We made it to the grand opening at 5:30pm and it was delightful! We've never been to this area of town and now we have a reason to come back. Order at the counter and you'll get a text when your order is ready. Gratuity is already included on menu prices. There are so many seating options. Inside is cute, front patio is lively, and back deck is where we decided to dine. They have pebble ice. That gets extra points from our kids. It's generally family friendly but also a nice spot to grab drinks with your friends. Loved my cocktail and wine when I switched. Fresh beer and a variety of soft drinks. The food was fantastic! My fish & chips sandwich was massive. Partner got the tuna salad and it was really special. The ingredients taste high quality and fresh. Don't forget the sides! Pasta salad and those curly fries are definitely worth getting. The kids ate all their food?! That's a special occasion right there. Every single person that works there is friendly and those uniforms are adorable. So fun, we'll be back!

Yelp
Menu is extremely limited. Prices are high. We had the "legendary fish and chips sandwich" which was OK, but wouldn't have it again. Came with nothing on the side, but you can a slice of tomato for $4. We also had the "marinated bean salad", which was OK, but dominated by the "blistered" tomatoes. We would not order this again either. The only dessert on offer was soft serve, which we weren't interested in. I had a cup of drip coffee which was $5 and quite good. We were really looking forward to this opening because Hayden Island has so few restaurants. However, we won't be back unless they improve the menu. It was a very expensive, unsatisfying lunch.

Yelp
First of all, as someone who lives on Hayden Island, I'm excited to have another restaurant opening year round. The grounds are stunning (see the photos), and the builidng is beautiful. There is limited interior seating with at least one large-screen TV, but most of the seating is outdoors: some covered; most with umbrella shade. We stopped here during the first hour of their first day of business. We just ordered coffee so we could sit outside with our dogs and enjoy the beautiful morning in a beautiful setting. We were not disappointed. The service was wonderful--everyone was happy at the launch, and we were the first non-Columbia Crossing customers. Gentle reader, prepare yourself: a 12 ounce cup of drip coffee is $5 here. It does include tip, and it was good coffee. Still, that's a lot for drip, non-organic coffee. So, this won't be a daily stop for me, but it will be special weekend coffee. We'll be back to try their menu offerings for lunch or dinner. Pal's promises to be a wonderful gathering spot for people and their dogs. Welcome to the Island!

Yelp
If you wanna fun nautical experience and good food come check out PAL'S on Hayden Island. Super friendly staff and delicious drinks. Try the Island Negroni! Super dog friendly. They have Adirondack chairs, with fire pits to sit and watch the boats and sunset.

Yelp
Thoughtful well crafted food. Not Cisco stuff here. Really fish. Real food. Love the team. Try it. Location is clearly amazing. High hopes!!
