A Portland Boathouse Is Reopening As a Kid-Friendly Destination for Fish Sandwiches | Eater Portland

"A year-round indoor-outdoor spot on Hayden Island opening in early July, it will operate every day from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. with mornings (7–11 a.m.) devoted to coffee, pastries and grab-and-go grocery-style items and a lunch/dinner seafood-forward menu through the evening. The food leans heavily on Pacific Northwest seafood: Oregon albacore tuna salad, oversized panko-breaded fish sandwiches dusted in kettle chips and served on comically tiny buns, a local take on a lobster roll using Oregon Bay shrimp, seasonal Dungeness crab, and soft serve for dessert. The cocktail program, overseen by a veteran barkeep with his own syrups, mixes classics like the Dark and Stormy with inventive riffs such as a Banoffee Bahama Mama built with Hamilton dark rum, banana liqueur and a shot of soft serve. Housed in a renovated marina leasing office with a big lawn and family-focused layout (designed with help from Pistils Nursery), the place aims for an approachable, nostalgic vibe—somewhere between an original Dairy Queen and Maine’s Bagaduce Lunch—encouraging families and boaters to linger by the water." - Paolo Bicchieri

Such an amazing views and lots of seating options. The drinks are tasty but the foods need to get improvement. Not recommend ordering “Hotdog” its really salty. And I’m not sure why staff put a lots of ketchup on my hotdog 🌭 without asking customer. It’s way too much and it’s really messy when I tried to eat it. We also ordered “Grill cheeses 🧀” for our kid but staff burn 🔥the bread 🍞 really dark and after I confirm and asked if they can redo the grill cheese, staff said “ Oh, ok” with cold face! As I know, staff not fully redo my grill cheeses, they burn both side of the bread but they redo only one side and re-used the old burn grill cheeses return back to me. I forgot to take those pictures due to that issues. Highly recommend retraining staff for better customer service. We pay full amount + tips and we hope to get the service we supposed to be receive. There were lots of bee 🐝, if you have kids just more careful. It’s really much every where.

First of all the location, service and atmosphere are excellent! We decided to come by and have a couple of drinks. I would say that our mixed drinks were more like shots than a mixed drink. I'm self employed and I know how hard it is to manage a business. $30 for two shots is kind of steep. We will come back to try the food. It looks really good! Hopefully, I can raise the score after eating here.

Google
Super cute spot with amazing views and lots of awesome seating options. The drinks are tasty but seem to have next to no liquor in them. One tasted like it was completely non alcoholic. Very yummy but felt completely sober after one drink and generally feel pretty tipsy after a glass of wine. There were also lots of very large spiders on the patio and spider webs. Not sure much can be done about this but we had to move several times to avoid some scary critters. Otherwise so freaking cute, amazing patio, beautiful to watch the sunset, and I thought the drinks were on par with Portland drink prices. Friendly service too!

This is a great spot to grab food or a drink and hang out by the marina! The outdoor space is huge with lots of kid-friendly areas. When we went there was a long line. You can order food at the counter from one line and drinks/ice cream from another line. We probably waited about 20-30 minutes to order and another 30 minutes to receive our food. I thought this long wait might be a problem with little kids, but the outdoor space kept them occupied. In addition to a play area made of logs, the space also has a lawn with corn hole and a lounge area with fire pits. The place is tastefully designed and is new so everything is in great shape right now. The food itself was very tasty. The menu feels like elevated fish shack snack bar food. The teriyaki fish bowl, for example, had a complex slaw underneath trout with perfectly crispy skin. Even the things like the potato salad were better than I expected. The portions are somewhat small compared to the prices. I think things like the fish bowl were small for an entree and would recommend ordering sides (or another entree/sandwich). The cold sesame noodles felt more substantial in size. The staff are very friendly here, and the place has great vibes. I wonder if the kitchen will be faster in the future or if the complexity of the dishes limits its speed. If you are willing to wait and have realistic expectations around portion size, I would highly recommend this spot.

Google

They just opened this Monday and they serve Coava coffee, plenty of parking, boats, plenty of grass for the kids to run around, they have crayons for kids, high chairs, outdoor seating, just all in all, such a great spot! I got the B’s Bay Shrimp Roll and it’s a 10/10 🔥 Coffee was great as well!

Google
Such a fun spot! The view is amazing and doesnt make you feel like you’re anywhere near portland. We got the tuna sandwich and pasta salad, both very fresh. We will surely be returning especially while the weather is so nice.

Google
Marina life is good We keep our sailboat in the marina and on weekends we are there. This place makes the old cafe look like a food truck. It has great outdoor seating overlooking the marina and the food and drinks are great. Nothing is as good as being on the Columbia enjoying a good meal and cocktails with friends. And there is PLENTY of seating. With good groves playing.

Yelp
The food was delicious.. Definitely try the Kettle chip crusted fried trout sandwich. The burger was great and the hot dog with slaw and crispy onions was super yummy. Owe don't forget the drinks..... Something for everyone. Great for families and couples alike. My daughter loved the cucumber lemonade and butter noodles. The outdoor seating next to the water was the perfect atmosphere. The staff was on it even with the rush of people. We'll be back. Thanks Pal's.

Yelp
We made it to the grand opening at 5:30pm and it was delightful! We've never been to this area of town and now we have a reason to come back. Order at the counter and you'll get a text when your order is ready. Gratuity is already included on menu prices. There are so many seating options. Inside is cute, front patio is lively, and back deck is where we decided to dine. They have pebble ice. That gets extra points from our kids. It's generally family friendly but also a nice spot to grab drinks with your friends. Loved my cocktail and wine when I switched. Fresh beer and a variety of soft drinks. The food was fantastic! My fish & chips sandwich was massive. Partner got the tuna salad and it was really special. The ingredients taste high quality and fresh. Don't forget the sides! Pasta salad and those curly fries are definitely worth getting. The kids ate all their food?! That's a special occasion right there. Every single person that works there is friendly and those uniforms are adorable. So fun, we'll be back!

Yelp
Menu is extremely limited. Prices are high. We had the "legendary fish and chips sandwich" which was OK, but wouldn't have it again. Came with nothing on the side, but you can a slice of tomato for $4. We also had the "marinated bean salad", which was OK, but dominated by the "blistered" tomatoes. We would not order this again either. The only dessert on offer was soft serve, which we weren't interested in. I had a cup of drip coffee which was $5 and quite good. We were really looking forward to this opening because Hayden Island has so few restaurants. However, we won't be back unless they improve the menu. It was a very expensive, unsatisfying lunch.

Yelp
First of all, as someone who lives on Hayden Island, I'm excited to have another restaurant opening year round. The grounds are stunning (see the photos), and the builidng is beautiful. There is limited interior seating with at least one large-screen TV, but most of the seating is outdoors: some covered; most with umbrella shade. We stopped here during the first hour of their first day of business. We just ordered coffee so we could sit outside with our dogs and enjoy the beautiful morning in a beautiful setting. We were not disappointed. The service was wonderful--everyone was happy at the launch, and we were the first non-Columbia Crossing customers. Gentle reader, prepare yourself: a 12 ounce cup of drip coffee is $5 here. It does include tip, and it was good coffee. Still, that's a lot for drip, non-organic coffee. So, this won't be a daily stop for me, but it will be special weekend coffee. We'll be back to try their menu offerings for lunch or dinner. Pal's promises to be a wonderful gathering spot for people and their dogs. Welcome to the Island!

Yelp
Freaking delicious rock fish bowl and steelhead ginger teriyaki bowl! Love the Pilsner too.

Yelp
Food and drinks were tasty. Burger had good flavor. Good crust. Not overly sauced. The prices are higher but they include gratuity. Staff was attentive. Everything was clean. Only complaint was the amount of bee/yellowjackets. They had traps up. Hope next summer it's better.

Yelp
I wish this place was better, but the food was just okay and the prices don't fit for what you get. Worst of all, everything they serve is in some disposable trash container. Enjoy this beautiful riverside locale while filling the city's riverside landfill with more single use plastic? Thanks but no thanks.

Yelp
Great location unfortunately they won't last so enjoy the view while you can. I ordered a large coffee. They serve it premade stored in a pump craft. $5.00 the smallest coffee I've seen locally and the highest price for sure. Especially for an average quality blend. No value here, better coffee and better prices certainly elsewhere. very disappointed as I need a regular place to enjoy on the island.

Yelp
Been here twice now and while the food I had was good the prices and wait times are not worth it. We waited in a line that started outside and took a while to get to the front of, and then waited almost an hour for our food. When I got to the front and ordered I asked to use some points I had from my first visit and the cashier didn't apply them. When I asked if they applied they simply shrugged. Fries are meh.. avocado sandwhich is great and can be made vegan. My wife's small pour of wine was $14 and the bottles are $23+ but require a $10 corkage fee if you want to drink it there (mind you that's just for a bottle opener, ice and a plastic cup). Landscaping is nice but way too many small children running around for me! Unattended and on the loose one kid jumped over my drink while we sat in the Adirondack chairs. For the amount of people there waiting for food the service was incredibly slow, and there was one person only occasionally clearing tables. For the proce point I think it's a bit wild to be a 'bus your own table' kind of place. Not to mention there's only one smal trash can wjth a pile of recycling on the ground next to it. Overall underwhelmed and probably won't be back much.

Yelp
Honestly, I was so excited to check this place out after seeing their social media post. Unfortunately, the people weren't very friendly. We went for coffee and my husband thought it looked like a great place to bring his team since their offices aren't far from there and they have lots of seating. When he called to see about a large group they didn't want to help. They said just come and basically we will figure it out. They didn't like that idea so they took them off the list of places to go. It's too bad as it is a nice location.

Yelp
Excellent service, amazing views and fantastic food. All around great experience. We will be back for sure.

Yelp
I really want to root for this place, but given the level of service and the high prices, it's hard to. My family of 3 have been twice now, once by ourselves at what I would have assumed were off-peak hours at 3pm on a Sunday (wrong) and once with friends at 1pm on a Saturday (which was oddly half as busy as 3 on a Sunday). Both times we waited over an hour for a very small order of food; the second visit took 90 minutes for one fish sandwich and about 2.5 oz of butter noodles. (The line was inside the building on both visits, so it's not like we should have seen this coming.) At $27 for an over-fried fish sandwich with no sides, I might as well be going to Nostrana. I'd at least get a side at that price and definitely served much sooner. What was doubly frustrating is that our friends are vegetarians, so their food came out a full 45 minutes before ours. This is a bummer if you're intending to share a meal with other tired parents, or really, just anyone. Additional Prices (since others have mentioned they're discreet about listing them on the site/social): --Soft serve is $5 for a very small portion --Avocado sandwich is $22 --Cocktails average $15-$16 --Shrimp roll is $13 for baby shrimp --Fries not included with any sandwich, including the deceptively named "Fish and Chips Sandwich" Verdict: The location is lovely, and the vibe is genuinely nice. But at the current price point and wait times, I highly encourage you to resist the siren song of (the many, many) Portland Instagram influencers they've lured into a promotional partnership, and skip Pal's until they've worked out staffing and brought down their atmospheric prices (the points are nice, but I shouldn't need points to afford a pretty basic meal).

Tucker M.

Yelp
First the good: great ambience outside. Lovely setting. One of my favorites for eating outside by the water in Portland. The prices are outrageous. My Tuna melt was $28 and came with zero sides. I noticed they don't put the prices on their website and after going there you will know why. Seems that perhaps it's their way of acknowledging that the prices are insane. They don't post a photo of the menu on their social media either. We waited quite a while in line to order. They got our order wrong on the first try and at first tried to convince us it was right before somebody else coming over and corroborating that it was indeed wrong. The other frustrating thing about the long line is that if you decide to come back and add on to your order and bet another drink etc, you have to get in the back of the line. So your food gets cold while you wait in line to order another drink or another side. I know they just opened and I'm rooting for this place so I may give it one more try next time I have money to burn. Most of the folks working there were really nice.

AJ N.

Yelp
Ridiculous wait times for food and the place wasn't even that busy IMO. First issue I have is with the food retrieval, they ask for your phone number and send you a text when the food is ready. Well that normally works when they take the number down correctly.... They got ours wrong and never came outside to yell a name or check... food sat on counter and by the time we went to check ourselves the hot food was cold and the only response we got from them was "oops" I ordered the tuna melt, sandwich came on Texas toast, in the world's smallest paper carton. It also came with an entire quarter of an iceberg lettuce head which just made the entire sandwich unmanageable(ridiculous) not needed. Flavors were ok but the tuna didn't seem to be broken up enough I had multiple chucks in my sandwich which were just not necessary. I'm not sure if the fries came out warm if I would be on a better mood or what All I'll say is the place is nice to hang out but I think the kitchen needs to pay a little more attention to detail to make me want to come back again.

Marie T.

Yelp
Loved it. Food was amazing! So fresh! Nice staff. Great outdoor space even on a cold rainy day. Food came out super quick and no line/wait for lunch on a Saturday. Tips included in the menu prices. So even a little high it averages out bc you don't have a tip option! Definitely check this place out!!!!

Yelp
The kids had a great time climbing on the log playground. I'd love to see more creative play structures scattered around the property. I appreciated the affordable kids menu, especially give that the price of adult meals was fairly expensive (but the quality was good). One recommendation is to change out the plants surrounding and scattered throughout to non-polinators. They are pretty, but between the food and kids, the bees were a bit of a nuisance and resulted in one person in a party getting stung.

Leslie H.

Yelp
Disappointing at best. Very expensive for subpar food. Small servings and low quality. Fake cheese on hamburgers. 2 finger pour $13 glasses of wine. Love supporting local and new businesses but you need to earn repeat business. It is a beautiful location. Views of Marina and lots of family seating out front.

Cary C.

Yelp
This place fits right in with Columbia crossings. I went up and ordered a cheeseburger and fries well done and they said they didn't have time to prepare it that way. I asked to see the manager and the owner came up and said the food's perfect the way they serve it. I replied let me try one of your cheeseburgers and fries then. He replied that they were out of food. It reminded me of the Seinfeld episode and the chef that said no food for you. Keep up the good work Columbia crossings.

Raya F.

Yelp
Great ambiance! I will absolutely return with the kiddos for coffee and ice cream! My $27 fish sando tasted mostly of salt, I was crunching giant salt crystals and it made my tummy hurt. The bean salad is like eating charcuterie over beans, actually not bad! Staff is friendly and helpful, but service is slow. A few more menu options done well would help a great deal. It's expensive but gratuity is included. I wanted to love it...nothing was outright bad but it wasn't great for the cost. Just wish the food was a bit better.

Alice H.

Yelp
I would say 4 1/2 stars The food was delicious, especially the fish and chips sandwich! cucumber mint lemonade was a great choice. Did not advertise on the website Gluten free buns , was pleasantly surprised they offered that as an option. Might be good to addd that to the online menu. Did I say the bun was tasty! The ambiance is amazing, could have sat there all day, Beautiful outdoor space! The only "issue" was how long it took to get our food. Thinking it being a new place it will work out that kink. Suggestion All the new craze in coffee is the fluffy seagull latte Would be the perfect addition to the menu and fits with the theme. Would DEFINITELY recommend!!!!

Allison M.

Yelp
Thoughtful well crafted food. Not Cisco stuff here. Really fish. Real food. Love the team. Try it. Location is clearly amazing. High hopes!!
