The 17 Essential Restaurants in Columbia, Home of the University of Missouri

"For traditional Cantonese food, Columbians will tell you to go to Peking Restaurant. The family behind the operation has been cooking for decades, but the modern version of the restaurant opened in 2005, with an enormous menu packed with all sorts of choices. Come with a group to share plates of cashew chicken, empress chicken, lo mein, and egg rolls. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner with a break in between, and the menu of lunch specials offers consistent crowd favorites." - Chloe Konrad

Google
This was our first time here and I've gotta say we will definitely be returning! The food was amazing and the staff was always right there before we even needed something. They were super friendly and we were seated immediately and waited on immediately. Highly recommend. Small and quaint but very well maintained and kept up. Clean and neat. Calming atmosphere. Update: the cashew chicken deep fried is fantastic! It's my favorite

Google
Pleasant experience on our 1st visit. Food was very good and the lunch special price's are great! The wait staff was pleasant but didn't check back with us after serving our meal. We had 2 lunch special's, Cashew Chicken & Pork Twice Cooked. We would recommend this restaurant. The prices don't match what is shown on their website.

Google
The food was really good. I ordered the triple delight, chicken, beef, and shrimp. The portion was generous and it was Cooked perfectly. My wife ordered a tofu dish which was also very good. The physical arrangement is odd. People picking up takeout have to stand in line right by people that are eating because the counter is in back. The bad: the bathroom is filthy. Why can’t they clean it? I’ll never understand why Asian restaurants have the worst bathrooms. Clean your bathroom!

Google
Beautiful sit-down Chinese restaurant in CoMo!! Each entree comfortably feeds two people. I personally really liked the House Lo Mein. And if you're like me and can't decide on one appetizer, the Pu Pu platter has 2 each of 5 different appetizers. I got Jasmine tea for my drink. Everything was very tasty, service was great; I will definitely be back!

Google
Amazing food with great flavor. The place itself is more low-key design, but it's worth it. I've been here several times and will continue to do so. I end up getting Hot & Sour soup and Ma Pou Tofu. Less spice than I'm used to, but flavor makes up for it.

Google
The general tso chicken and hot n sour soup were great! Didn’t care for the house egg rolls— sour cabbage.

Google
Everything was cooked to perfection inspite of them being busy , sweet and sour soup has just the right amount of thickness to add to the flavor ,pan fried dumplings are perfectly cooked and worth the 20 minute wait, crab Rangoon tell a culinary tale and finally a truly authentic ja jum myun . There food is incredible as many agree . Because you can't taste any shortcuts in the food like so many places take...

Google
Good service and delicious food. The eggplant I'm garlic sauce is excellent!

Yelp
My favorite chinese food in Columbia! The food comes out quickly and is so delicious. The portions are large for the prices. We ordered Crab Rangoon, House Egg Roll, Orange Chicken, Chicken Fried Rice, and two orders of Hot & Sour Soup for $40. The meal was split between two people with plenty for us to also take home as leftovers!

Yelp
This was one of my favorite Chinese restaurants in Columbia about 15 years ago, and it's still pretty tasty to this day. The food is good for Midwest style Chinese food, with my favorite dish being the Pan Fried Noodles. It has a semi crispy noodle base, and is topped with a lot of chicken, beef, and vegetables, tossed with a brown sauce. Their Broccoli Shrimp also was served with a brown sauce, unlike the West coast that serves it in a white or lobster sauce. It was similar to beef and broccoli, but just with shrimp. It was good but different, and a bit on the heavy side for sauces especially with seafood. The servings were very generous and packaged nicely when we picked up the food. The service was quick and very friendly. All in all, Peking is a nice restaurant to eat in and for take away.

Yelp
Wanted to have a sit down lunch while visiting Columbia and decided to try this place. I found that I had difficulty trying to finish everything, as the lunch special comes with soup, fried rice, an entree, and an egg role. I actually needed a take home container. All the items were reasonably priced. The service was quick. The waitress had no problem with making substitutions (white rice over fried and crab Rangoon instead of the egg roll.) I will definitely be back to this place when visiting Columbia.

Yelp
Nice local Chinese restaurant in Columbia Missouri. The owner menu on apple maps and safari wasn't showing the full menu photo online. I figured I'd add the photos for reference.

Brad A.

Yelp
My wife and I ate lunch at Peking Restaurant recently and the food and service were excellent. We'll go again when in Columbia.

Yelp
This is my favorite columbia Chinese food location. It is slightly pricier than other spots in the areas but the food is so good. I get the orange chicken with fried rice or beef lo mein and it never disappoints. It usually feeds me for about two meals no matter what I order here. Generally takes them about 10 minutes to serve as well. The lunch special is the best deal and seems to be mostly takeout while the dinner seems to have more people dining in.

Miranda A.

Yelp
My favorite Chinese restaurant in Columbia by far. Their broccoli chicken and fried rice is the best.
google avatar

Yelp
Enjoyed our lunch at Peking Restaurant. Food was hot and fresh. Very tasty. The owner was so welcoming. Will definitely be back.

Yelp
The food is always really good, but the wait for food is crazy. You call in your order with a nice lady, but when you arrive at the time she asks, it's another 20-30 min in the store. They yell out orders but it's chaos. Everyone seems to get the crab rangoons, fried rice, and lo mein. I've tried a few items on their "authentic Chinese" menu, and it's just fine - it's the best you'll get in Columbia. It's one of the better Chinese options in Columbia.

Heather M.

Yelp
I've been going to this restaurant infrequently for many years. I think it has the best pork twice cooked in Columbia. Food portions are very generous and there's always plenty to take home. Family owned and the owner is always there working (she's a hoot). Last visit was on a busy Friday night. The very limited staff was doing a great job managing an abundance of customers- both for pickup orders and dine-in. Seating tip- I recommend sitting on the right side of the room as you walk in if it's a busy time. We sat on the left and it was a little awkward because the line for takeout pickups was right by our table.

Carl H.

Yelp
Overpriced Chinese food, not very friendly service, and there are places in town that are much better. Interior like a warehouse in some areas.

renee b.

Yelp
This is exactly what I wanted and expected. There's a reason this restaurant has been here forever!!

Emma A.

Yelp
Peking is now my favorite. The food is delicious and can be customized to your specific tastes. The staff is so friendly and accommodating.

Yelp
This place has some really good Chinese food. We always get the food to go and the service is awesome. The order has always been correct. Chicken Lo Mein, and sesame chicken is a couple of our favorites. However, the sesame chicken can be a little doughy at times.

Kathy D.

Yelp
This is a great place to eat. I enjoy their food. I am a wonton soup lover and I can find any restaurant that make it as good as this place. I have been all over the nation. So this is saying something.
google avatar

Hannah C.

Yelp
I've honestly never had a bad experience here. Their servings are large which is a plus because leftovers!! They are so nice and quick. The chicken lomein is my top for sure!
google avatar

Joshua J.

Yelp
Tastes good, unfortunately the quality control is not there. Very upset stomachs from both parties felt directly after eating. Bathrooms weren't very clean and that should have been the first major warning. Moldy ceiling panels went unnoticed until meals had been ordered. Covid seemed to take away the need for these restaurants to hold themselves accountable.

Keith R.

Yelp
I would never come here. I'd rather eat a rat in a street shop in Africa (I have). Slowly place I have ever been and the food is absolutely disgusting. Terrible experience. Stay away!!!

Cole E.

Yelp
To start off, the lady over the phone was very rude. Not that I give a shit, be rude as you want, I just want good food. That being said, this cashew chicken was ass, I mean it looks like a five year old looked up how to fry chicken and then dumped some sauce on it. The sauce being a recreation of something he saw at the chum bucket on spongebob. I don't think it'll make you sick or anything. But def not worth the money.

Yelp
Stopped by Peking on a whim at the recommendation of a coworker and glad I did. I called in my order and it was ready in less than 10mins. I ordered the Veggie Fried Rice and Veggie Egg Rolls. You get 2 egg rolls with the order and they don't skimp on the filling. The rice was moist and super flavorful; Tons of veggies consisting of broccoli, baby corn, onion, mushroom, snap peas, carrots, and bean sprouts - I opted for no egg. Total cost was $12...much more bang for your buck and better tasting if you ask me than my usual, House of Chow for about $16
google avatar

Chelsea Z.

Yelp
Delicious food and fast service. Their fried rice is really yummy! Large portions for a food price. We always have leftovers for a day or two and it reheats well.
google avatar

Enrique S.

Yelp
Just ordered carry out. Not good. The generals chicken was in a sticky sweet syrup. The garlic chicken was ok. It was still a lot of food for the money. But generals chicken is not "candied"

Clayton S.

Yelp
Peking is without a doubt the place to go if your looking for something quick and easy in CoMO. The family owned restaurant is quaint and really makes you feel at home! (also their shrimp fried rice the best I've ever had.)

Cat L.

Yelp
Pretty tasty food, not too much flavor but I was okay with that since oftentimes stir fry can be oversauced and seasoned. Wonton was great and staff was friendly- will return
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
Best Chinese food in CoMo. Take out was our only option as they aren't doing dine in right now, but our order was perfect, prepared quickly, they were very friendly, and the price is about what you'd expect at and Chinese take out place. Beef on a stick is amazing and their fried rice is just the tops. Worth the trip. It's now our go-to Chinese food place.
google avatar

Amy T.

Yelp
How this place only has 3.5 is a mystery to me! Their food is always amazing and super fresh. We love the beef and broccoli and General Tso's chicken. I could eat it everyday for the rest of my life. It's my go-to place to eat in Como. Also do yourself a favor and order the egg rolls!
google avatar

Meredith G.

Yelp
Always great food and service. The lady who works the front is very nice and funny. Restaurant is clean and I always have a pleasant experience.

Angela P.

Yelp
While in Columbia overnight and craving Chinese takeout, I took a chance on this restaurant and I am glad that I did! Excellent Szechuan Beef and crab Rangoon. The lady taking/handing out orders was very personable.

Stephen B.

Yelp
Just moved to Columbia and decided to give Peking a try. Well worth it. I order a lunch menu item to go and service was really fast and the food was fantastic.
google avatar

Catherine R.

Yelp
GO HERE AT LUNCH TIME!! They have ridiculously good food at amazing lunch prices. Highly recommend the pork peking, thought it does have a kick. Overall great dining experience for a great price.

Melanie S.

Yelp
Food was bland, I substituted noodles for the rice, noodles were cooked, no sauce or nothing on them. Just plain noodles. Got the chicken and mushrooms, no taste to them at all. Definitely will drive further next time and go where I know the food has flavor.
google avatar

Steve Y.

Yelp
Is there not a health department with inspectors in this town trays of raw chicken sitting out at room temp 3 full sheet trays only about a dozen customers no way they will use it all today Got sweet and sour chicken before I saw the trays. Breaking was soggy and not seasoned Won't be back
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
I'm visiting from IL and I hold CoMO restaurants in high regard. I've eaten at so many good places here...... unfortunately this was not one of them. I ordered the Kung Pao Shrimp and crab Rangoon as a lunch special (comes with egg roll and fried rice). Firstly I'll echo some of the previous comments that the food was way too oily. If fairly certain that the cream cheese in the crab Rangoon was off/old, and there was neither real or imitation crab in it. Egg roll was ok, but was soaking in the oil from my kung pao shrimp. There were a lot of people dining in for lunch, so maybe this is a case where some people like it and others don't.

Andrea S.

Yelp
Friendly little business to support and the food is great! My to-go order is veggie fried rice! They have fresh veggies in it and the flavor is delicious.
google avatar

Steven T.

Yelp
Too much oil! Just ordered lunch via phone/pick-up. I got the pricing from their fb page and it's a couple dollars off. I ended up paying over $7 instead of $5ish. It's not a bad value overall, but it's something that needs to be fixed. My biggest issue is the amount of oil on my food. I ordered a twice cooked pork and the oil literally spilled all over the plastic bag. Just plain oil. Not sauce. The food was so saturated in oil that I couldn't finish eating it. Even the rice was got oil in it. Not happy with this quality tbh. The portion is also rather small compared to other Chinese lunch menu.

Steve B.

Yelp
Everything I have tried at this restaurant has been wonderful. I have eaten in and had carry out. If getting carry out, call ahead so the wait is shorter. This is a very popular place to eat!
google avatar

DaShayla B.

Yelp
Favorite Chinese restaurant in Columbia! Large portions, always delicious. Pricey but worth it!
google avatar

Kirstin J.

Yelp
I love Peking! Large portions, short wait time, amazing food! I have been eating there for years and they have yet to disappoint me. I always order the house fried rice and this last time I got orange chicken. I had leftovers for DAYS! Best Chinese food in CoMo!
google avatar

Dan B.

Yelp
Favorite Chinese food in town, great portions, my opinion best fried rice in town( or get wild w some house fried rice), great crab Rangoon, orange chicken 2nd to none. My go to Friday night takeout

Deanna C.

Yelp
The staff here tonight has been horrible. Had to ask for a plate, hot mustard , Napkins, no one asked if I needed anything the whole time I'm here. Brought me my ticket and I just got my main course, and yo ho go boxes. I had to wave my glass in the air to get a drink. Such bad service !! They close at 10:00 and they are rushing their customers out the door.
google avatar

Jay M.

Yelp
I probably hit this place once a week. My favorite in Columbia for some excellent Chinese delights. Finally a place who has twice cooked pork that isn't dried out and has flavor.

Shuang H.

Yelp
We ask for the menu in Chinese of course. Chinese style meatball is our favorite, bean sprouts with chicken is good too. If you are brave enough, could try various pork intestine dishes, or the very spicy southwestern style chicken.
google avatar

Jackson B.

Yelp
This is, and will always be, my favorite Chinese restaurant in Missouri! The food is amazing, the service is stellar, and the atmosphere is comfortable, and homey. I would heavily suggest trying them as soon as you can - bring your appetite :)
google avatar

Katherine R.

Yelp
I wish I could give this place a higher rating because the food is good. The problem is it's dirty. Can't bear to eat here, anymore.
google avatar

Kris T.

Yelp
Best Chinese in Columbia, we won't go anywhere else, the food is incredible, large portions, and the staff are all so nice! Sesame chicken is my favorite :)
google avatar

Graham R.

Yelp
Peking is a hidden gem of Columbia. It hides nestled away in a shopping mall and is under the shadow of the legendary Murray's. But when I have a hankering for Chinese no place can beat Peking for cheap quality Chinese food that comes out quickly.
google avatar

Jessica B.

Yelp
TERRIBLE service. The woman who took our order was incredibly rude. Barely talked to me and my friend and made absolutely no eye contact. The food was okay at best. I got the vegetable fried rice which was alright but I probably wouldn't get it again for the price. But the vegetable spring rolls were not good. They had a very odd mint flavor that was too overpowering and bitter.
google avatar

Cece U.

Yelp
I went to Peking with a friend this past week and I ordered the hot and sour soup and hunan beef. The soup was tasty, but I love hot and sour soup so it would be hard to mess that up. The hunan beef was good and the portion size was large, but I felt like something was missing. Also, my stomach was a bit bubbly after finishing my meal. Haha! I would come back but I would like to try some other dishes next time. I also think it would be better to get take out at this restaurant than eat in. It was not the cleanest (my bench had not been cleaned) and the ambiance could have been better. The waitress was nice and helped me choose a dish, so I appreciated the good service.

David C.

Yelp
I checked out Yelp and Trip Advisor while looking for a good Chinese place in Columbia. The reviews were good and it didn't disappoint. The crab Rangoon was VERY good as was all the food we had. Will definitely be going back.
google avatar

Kristin M.

Yelp
I didn't realize this, but when a lot of people drive by Peking Restaurant, they think it is another 'hole in the wall' place for 'crappy' Chinese food. So NOT true. I have been to this place several times. The majority of times I carry out and I have NEVER had anything bad. Lots of inexpensive Chinese places fry all their food so much that you lose any concept of the meat that was originally there. This place, not so much. I think my favorite at this point is the Szechwan beef. I order it every time, now. This place has a really nice atmosphere. Think casual + tablecloths and nice dishes. Very good!
