How Richmond Restaurant JewFro Is Working to Bring Together Two Local Histories | Bon Appétit

"Before JewFro opened, there were already restaurants serving Jewish or African food in Richmond, of course. Locals love Perly’s Deli, Africanne on Main, and Nile, among others." - ByEric Ginsburg

"A Classic Jewish Deli for Breakfast, Lunch, or Dinner Popular all day long, Perly’s has an authentic art deco interior and an equally authentic, slightly updated New York deli menu. Breakfast includes latkes and blintzes, lunch includes a sublime Reuben, and dinner might start with lox or smoked whitefish, proceed to brisket, and end with a commendable cheesecake."

Came for lunch time and left delighted and full! I had the tuna on challah and my date had the pastrami sandwich on rye. The tuna came with 4 slices of bread with very fresh and delicious veggies. Everything tasted fresh and complimented the tuna wonderfully. The chips were heavily seasoned and paired well. The pastrami was also good, and the fries were wonderfully seasoned as well. The service was attentive and friendly, even when they were in the middle of a lunch rush. We were quoted ~45 minute wait for the two of us and probably waited a total of 20 minutes before we were seated. Would come again!

Google
For vibes, service, atmosphere this place is 10/10. Absolutely amazing. Our waiter was top notch and handled my dad’s jokes like a champ. For food, kinda mid. Nothing blew me away and the tuna salad for instance was called a dill and caper but had so little flavor we had to take some capers and dill from our families fish platter. Overall this place was fantastic and I’ll be back but that is in part due to the lack of better options and not the ridiculously outstanding flavors they served up here. Prices are also reasonable.

My favorite brunch spot! It is a RVA stable. Food is always great. I keep going back to try new items on the menu! Service is immaculate. Don’t forget to get the chocolate babka for desert. It is 1000/10

What a fun spot! Definitely understand the hype. It has a great cozy vibe and the food was top notch. The burger and fries had great flavors and were my favorite, but the duck pierogis were super tasty as well! Very attentive and super friendly service

Heading to Perly's Restaurant was an unforgettable experience! From the moment we walked in, the cozy ambiance and the warm welcome from the staff set the tone for a wonderful evening. The real star of the show, however, was undoubtedly the food. Each dish we tried was bursting with flavor, expertly prepared and beautifully presented. The portions were generous, ensuring that we left not just satisfied, but delighted. A special shout-out to their fries—extra crispy and perfectly seasoned, they were absolutely irresistible! Whether you're a local or just passing through, Perly's promises a culinary adventure that's not to be missed. Highly recommend for anyone looking to indulge in some delicious, hearty meals!

Google
Great visit to one of Richmond’s well known breakfast spots! Visited Richmond last year and couldn’t get in due to the long wait. Came back this year and decided to wait and glad we did! Food was delicious and friendly wait staff. Highly recommend if you’re looking for Jewish-themed breakfast.

Google
Absolutely amazing place! I've yet to have anything not superb quality, with equally fair pricing. The Oh Vey! is a crazy classic deli sandwich, very huge. The Jewbano was also killer, messy but unhinged with flavor. The Benny Goodman is my favorite take on Eggs Benedict, super delicious 👌 The coffee was pretty solid as well, large nice mug with endless refills. Shoutout to Maggie our waitress for a great experience. If you don't want to wait for a table, I recommend getting here 20-30 min before they open. This was on a Sunday. 10/10 would recommend, unironically.

It was my first time at Perly’s, and I was blown away! Everything people rave about is absolutely true. The food was phenomenal, the ambiance was warm and inviting, but the real standout was the exceptional service from Chanel. She made the experience unforgettable. Without a doubt, this is a five-star spot that everyone visiting Richmond, Virginia, must try for breakfast!

Yelp
I know there are a million reviews already for Perly's, but I loved my experience here so much that I had to add another one. We were in town for the Richmond marathon, and came on Wednesday around 9AM. There were plenty of seats open, but I'm guessing cause it was a weekday morning. When I passed by after the marathon on Saturday, the place was packed with lines out the door. Like everyone else, we ordered latkes and the matzo ball soup. FANTASTIC! I would also highly recommended getting the Schnorrer since it was a great deal, but probably not the whitefish since it was smoked and not fresh (unless that's what you prefer). Coffee is unlimited, service was amazing (our waiter always greeted us with a huge smile on his face). What an establishment and Richmond gem. I'll always come back if I'm ever in town.

Yelp
Oh My! As many times as I've been to Richmond, why, oh why, hadn't I tried Perly's before! Perly's is a classic Jewish deli with incredible traditional items served in heaping portions. When you go into Perly's you get a sense of tradition in a warm and welcoming (and busy) atmosphere. The Matzoh Ball Soup is an incredible dish, featuring tender matzoh balls in a flavorful broth with just the right seasoning. Its a great way to start your meal and showcases their pproach to classic comfort food. The chicken liver plate was my fave, with a mix of flavors and textures. The smooth, liver pairs well with the tangy pickles, creamy schmear, and rye toast, creating a well-rounded dish with tasty accompaniments. The Pastrami on Rye is the deli's expertise, with tender pastrami served on rye bread that complements its flavors. Crisp pickles and a side of mustard provide a nice contrast, making it a solid choice for anyone hankering for a traditional deli sandwich. Perly's is a great experience for those seeking authentic Jewish fare (or other comfort food of your choice). Since my first visit, I've been back twice, each time that I've been to/through Richmond. It is THAT good!

Yelp
What a cute place! Easily got a table for two at lunchtime on a Wednesday. Great attentive service and LOVE the restaurant. As they say, super nostalgic vibes. We ordered latkes, the patty melt, and the sub snyderman which was a roast beef sandwich. Loved the fresh, hot latkes with classic sauces and everything came out quickly. The fries were crispy wedges with fun seasoning, although it wasn't too dill-forward. I enjoyed the patty melt and the sub snyderman - patty was cooked perfectly and it was fatty goodness. I did feel like the SS was a little dry and couldn't really taste the horseradish, so it was a little bit disappointing, but it was somehow still pretty good the next day. Would definitely come back but would try some other stuff next time!

Yelp
Perly's is a great spot for lunch or brunch--if you can get a seat! They offer a homey diner feel similar to what you can find in the Northeast. Their reuben is probably my favorite menu item. Their slices are nice and thick which showcases the quality of their meat. The meat itself is tender and has just enough fattiness. Their dill fries are delicious and have a very crunchy exterior with an almost pillowy center. I always order them as my side here. Their brussel sprouts are another item that is good to share. The mazoh ball soup is comforting on a cold day. Latkahs are another good item to try! Some items can be overly salty like their sailor which just needs a fresh or contrasting element in my opinion. They definitely have way more hits than misses and that's why they are such a Richmond staple.

Yelp
Perly's is a Jewish restaurant and deli that serves traditional Jewish food with a twist. The menu features classic Jewish deli dishes like smoked fish and matzoh ball soup, and more modern twists like Jewish egg rolls. A fairly extensive menu plus deli options. Today we enjoy some delicious food that brought me back to the streets of New York, chopped chicken livers and bagel (so fresh!) with lox & cream cheese. Also had a more non traditional Jewish egg roll - filled with beef, tongue & Kishka. Fully stuffed as we waddled out, but I saw a truly hearty bowl of matzoh ball soup that I wished I had room for. Will definitely be back! Although busy, we were able to be seated promptly, waitress was present quickly, order taken after taking time for menu, and meal was served quite promptly. Throughout meal waitress was present if needed, but not obtrusive. Once we were done, she quickly noticed and after inquiring if we wanted anything else, presented the bill. Prices were reasonable for what was served; I think it was a good value.

Yelp
Perfect deli with traditional Jewish offerings for customers such as chopped chicken liver and onions along with a side of Jewish egg rolls. What made them Jewish was the presence of tongue. Ugh, gross for me but hubby enjoyed eating them and after I nibbled a bit of his egg roll then later with mustard I found out that they contained tongue. Thank goodness I didn't get any when I nibbled. My dish was the everything bagel served with smoked salmon, cream cheese with chives, capers, red onions, tomatoes, lettuce, and cucumbers. We loved it here as we are former NY'ers. My dish was listed as the bagel with fish. We got lucky with parking as it's only street parking and first come, first served. We'll be back to this discovered deli that brought us back to NY. Clean but retro booths and the server was prompt.

Yelp
A Richmond staple. This should be a must visit on any foodies list. Very cool old Richmond building, pressed tin ceiling. The selection and options are plenty. I had a patty melt, it was very good but the pastrami and Swiss that someone else at my table had looked amazing. The fries were perfectly cooked. Next time I will be trying the matzo ball soup as that also looked top notch. Did I mention they have egg cream and house made sodas? So much to try, I will just have to go back again and again.

Yelp
First come first served and this place gets busy! There are some chairs to sit on outside but they're in direct sunlight in the morning so most people opt to wait in the shade. There isn't a buzzer system so you have to have someone in your party staying in front of the restaurant to wait for your party's name to be called. The host called a party of three a few times and walked down the block to call their name as well (they never showed) so they do make an effort to contact you once it's your time. We came on a Thursday morning and waited for around 30 - 45 minutes. We were lucky to find free, two-hour street parking around the corner but it seems like parking can be tricky to find. Once seated, the waitress took our order and served us our meals relatively quickly. We didn't feel rushed, though because we were a table of two, we were sat at one of the two-seater tables which are on the smaller side. I felt a bit cramped, even as a petite person. My husband got the corned beef hash and I got the meat knish and a side of dill potato salad. We also shared a chocolate babka. This was our first time eating Jewish food (besides pastrami at Katz' in NYC lol) and we loved it! Everything was flavorful and cooked perfectly. The knish is technically supposed to be an appetizer but I saw a photo on Yelp and am glad I ordered it as my entree--it was huge! We don't have Jewish restaurants or markets where we're from so it was a surprising treat to stumble upon Perly's in Richmond! Despite the busyness, our waitress was attentive and friendly. She also recommended some spots for us to check out since it was our first morning on our first trip to Richmond.

Yelp
I've visited Perot's twice and obviously I never posted my first review when I visited for lunch. All I can say was the food was good enough for me to bring my wife there for breakfast. I put myself out there some and tried the French toast w apples and raisins and something else, lol. The service was good and the atmosphere nice. Kinda like a hipster vibe and not really loud.
google avatar

Yelp
Perly's is everything a Jewish deli should be! The service is fabulous, the food is amazing, and the vibes are perfect! This place always has a wait and it's totally worth it! Unfortunately I failed miserably on getting pictures, but my partner who is Jewish said it's per damn close to his Nonna's so you'll just have to take our word and go get your own pictures.

Yelp
Yuuummmmmmmm. We're from Virginia Beach and there really isn't anything like that there. My husband and his family are all Jewish so they lament the lack of a true Jewish deli. This place holds up! We met my mom here for lunch yesterday and were floored by the menu. So many delicious items it was actually really hard to choose. They also serve brunch all day and that menu looked stellar. I want to come back just for that! We sampled a ton of things: -Matzoh Ball Soup (of course) -Potato Latkes -Beef Rolls -Tuna Salad Sandwich (on bagel) -Pastrami Sandwich -Rueben -Black and White Cookies Everything was amazing and tasted legit. Hubs approved. Sandwiches came with delicious seasoned fries that were crispy and fresh and delish! Our waitress was really sweet and took such good care of us and everyone was friendly inside. It's small and loud and lively but I loved it. Parking can be tricky but we snagged a street spot across the street. There are also nearby garages with hourly rates.

Yelp
If I have a friend visiting Richmond for the day, I ALWAYS recommend Perly's as a must-try. It's a breakfast/lunch spot serving up some delicious Jewish/Eastern European grub... but kinda like a modern/hip twist? It's not your typical grandparent's diner. I mean, they have a drinks called the Larry David and Bloody Miriam. Everything on the menu is delicious, so you can't really go wrong! My favorites are the Schlubby fries, pierogis, borscht and matzoh ball soup, all the sandwiches. For dessert, the black and white cookie is delicious. The wait can be pretty long, especially on the weekend. Good luck during breakfast rush. I've had the best luck weekday afternoons. I've usually been seated immediately.

Yelp
Food service atmosphere everything was amazing The latkas were insanely good Hash was excellent French toast was insane

Yelp
Classic Richmond staple. Thought I'd be waiting forever to get a table, but was seated within 15 minutes by the bar! The Jewbano was hands down one of the best sandwiches I've had in a while. The crisp garlic dill fries were a nice contrast to the large slice of pickle. Lastly, the babka in the French toast and as a side was great (although slightly drier with the chocolate).

Yelp
We waited 3O minutes for a table at the bar- hostess was great and service was great - I ordered smoked salmon with toasted bagel and hubby ordered a pastrami/Ruben sandwich- Food was okay - the sandwich had too much mustard and the smoked salmon was edible. I seen other plates going to various table and it looked good especially the matzo ball soup - I had my share of sandwiches at Jewish deli's especially Katz and pastrami Queen both located in NYC - we will go back and try other items on the menu

Yelp
Ok I had my doubts when a couple of locals recommended Perly's as having great food (I'm a NY Jew, so..) First off, I'm pretty sure I've never had good matzoh ball soup at a Jewish Deli, in NY or elsewhere. The Matzoh Ball Soup at Perly's is SO GOOD. It's absolutely homemade with a ton of dill and a rich flavor. I got the smoked Caesar salad which was good (although a bit too much dressing) and the cinnamon babka French toast which was absolutely unreal. So fresh, tons of flavor, and perfect texture. My friend ordered a bunch of things as well and loved everything. The vegetable knish was probably the best knish I've ever tried: the dough was flaky and the veggies were soft and cooked in perfectly. I tried the celery soda which was really unique and probably not something I'd order again, but I love that they have homemade sodas. They were out of a couple of desserts that they normally bring in from NY, but I probably didn't need any more food from what I ordered. Writing this review is making me hungry... The staff here was friendly and fantastic. Super attentive and kind. They moved my friend and I to a bigger table when we told them we'd be ordering a lot of food The inside is super cute and the ambiance is perfect, the perfect old school, mom and pop Jewish deli. Definitely don't skip Perly's when in Richmond!! I know I'll be back here for sure.

Yelp
We were recommended to this place since we were visiting from out of town. Perly's is a Jewish restaurant/deli with loads of options. We came on Sunday an hour before closing and there was no wait! The staff were friendly and sat us right away. We ordered the Bloody Miriam ($10), The Maven ($10), Matzoh Ball soup ($6), Reuben ($15), and Jewish Sailor ($15). The cup of Matzoh Ball soup was perfect and comforting for a chilly day. The sandwiches were good and came with seasoned fries. Both cocktails were not great and tasted watered down. We heard the wait can be pretty long, especially on the weekend, so I would recommend coming later or be one of the first in line.
google avatar

Pat C.

Yelp
Went here on a Saturday afternoon. Though the expected wait time was 20-25 minutes, we were seated earlier because some people in line left. However, the wait could have been longer especially before lunch. There were old pictures hanging on a wall with a nice wallpaper. Katie, our server, was lovely. Red sea sour and margarita were good. The Jewish egg rolls were also good. Cheese Blintz was awesome. It had ricotta cheese, orange and was topped with blueberry sauce. Yum yum! Schnitzel perlstein was not that tasty. Benny Goodman was light and delicious -- the poached eggs, smoked salmon, potato latkes with dill hollandaise and salmon roe all went well together. The cheese cake served with sweet blueberries, blackberries, and apples was alright. Though the wait in general is long and some dishes were not super great, overall, it deserves 4/5.

Yelp
This place was fantastic! Our friends in the area told us that this was a must go destination for breakfast, and I will say that I agree with them 100%! While, the menu is certainly ample, let's not kid around - if this is your first time visiting Perly's, you are probably here for the bagel and lox breakfast. It's awesome. Don't second-guess yourself! Get it! I do wish that they would have espresso/cappuccino here, but their drip coffee is actually excellent, and is one of the few that I've had at a restaurant that I have really enjoyed. (Sorry, I am a coffee nerd.) People were friendly, service was excellent, and our food was well prepared. I have zero complaints, and I'm sure that we will visit many more times when we are in Richmond!!!

Yelp
My favorite spot in RVA! You know it's good when there's always a line, so just be mindful when you go! Every time I've gone, I've gotten something different and each time I've thoroughly enjoyed what I've gotten. Our favorites are the potato and duck pierogis, schlubby fries, and the fish board. The fish board is absolutely huge by the way, so definitely get it if you have more than a party of two to share. Price is super reasonable for the quality and quantity of the food. Service is always very prompt and efficient. Would highly recommend if you're looking for a brunch place in RVA and even if there's a wait, I promise it's totally worth it!

Yelp
The food was delicious, the prices were reasonable, the service was fast, and it was a unique brunch place! Jewish delis are few and far between in this area so it was an enjoyable experience! The ambiance was a classic busy diner. Our party of 3 was seated almost immediately on a Saturday at noon and our server was pleasant.

Yelp
Perly's is certainly a Richmond institution and is a must-visit for visitors and locals alike. I don't think I've ever waited less than an hour for a table and that includes rainy days. They do not accept reservations. You can order food to-go on their website if you don't feel like waiting for dine-in, though. I've had several different items over the years, including deli dogs (one of the only times I've had to box up a hot dog in my life for lack of stomach space), smoked whitefish salad platter (it arrives deconstructed), and the Goy Vey turkey and bacon sandwich. All of which were very tasty. I also really enjoyed their garlic dill fries. This isn't a place to relax and hang out for several hours considering how busy they always are, and it's also really not a place to ask several questions about their menu items. My mom was doing her typical line of questioning on a recent visit, and our server replied by saying they consistently have 2-hour wait times, so the food is all good. He said it in a kind-enough approach for it not to be rude, but to just get the point across to hurry along and order so you can enjoy your food and make space for the next party. I love the taste of the Northeast and the vibe that goes along with that. It's like a little bit of home. Also don't skip on their black and white cookies!

Yelp
I found Perly's and for Richmond, it was the only restaurant that had a long line! We got quoted 45 minutes wait however it ended up only being around 15 mins. We opted for the counter seating however saw a booth and our hostess let us switch, no issues. This is a very busy crowded restaurant. We had to wait quite a long while for our server. We ordered the matzo ball soup, crispy Brussels sprouts and the bagel sandwich. The matzo ball soup was delicious, whole carrots, chicken and a huge matzo ball filled the hearty soup. I also ordered Brussels sprouts which I thought was a side dish, boy was I wrong! It was a huge portion! And was oh so delicious! I also need my fiber fill veggies daily and this definitely did the trick! We also got a bagel egg sandwich with smoked trout. It was delicious! Bagel was very fresh, definitely compares to what we've had in nyc! Definitely highly recommend Perly's!

Yelp
Perly's is one of Richmond's top places to eat for a reason! It's a must go to if you're visiting from out of town. Whether it's atmosphere, service, or food, Perly's has it all. This cozy and retro restaurant has a diner feel to it with all the old photos. The waits can be long on the weekends or desirable times. You'll usually have no wait (or at least a shorter one) on weekdays. ***LOCATION*** It's located on Grace street in between 1st and 2nd. Parking is limited, however there are a few local buses and spots to lock your bike nearby. Grace street is a really beautiful location. Plus they're next to Stella's Grocery if you want to visit another hyper local biz too. ***EXPERIENCE*** I've been here multiple times with family. On my recent trip, I took my manager who was visiting from Miami. On every trip, I always make sure to order the potato and duck pierogi. They're beyond delicious (and super filling). Here's what I (or people I love) have tried: Potato & Duck Pierogi: MUST GET, these heavenly dumplings are both filling and delicious. The sauce and stuffing in these are to die for. Latkes: Classic and yummy. It's a Jewish restaurant, why wouldn't you try getting these. Babka French toast: OMG, I just tried this and am now getting it every chance I get. Whenever I'm in NYC I try to get babka from my fave Jewish grocery store, I can now find a very tasty and creative version of it in RVA! It's straight up magic in your mouth. Corn Hash: My manager grew up eating this with her dad. I had never tried it before and she was so excited how authentic it was. She told me they use quality ingredients (some places just take it from can, not Perly's!) They use the freshest ingredients here. Reuben: I've watched my family devour this sandwich. So I think it's safe to say it's pretty good. ***PRICE*** Things are reasonably priced and affordable at this local gem. ***BATHROOM*** There are two gender neutral bathrooms that are both clean and rarely have lines. ***CONCLUSION*** Join the fan club and try Perly's today. It's a local favorite for a reason. It's well-priced, has a fantastic atmosphere, and above all else, yummy food.

Yelp
Fantastic, give me 14 of everything right now! As a native New Yorker, who absolutely loves Yiddish food. It was a pleasant surprise stumbling upon Perly's. At least once a week I crave Matzo Ball Soup. I grew up eating it, it's a comfort food for me and Perly's knocked it out of the park! From the broth, to chicken, and celery everything had exquisite flavor profiles. Bagel with Fish. Again I have not had anything similar since being home in NY. Perly's killed it once again. The only right way to do it is smoked salmon, chive smear on an everything bagel. Salmon was very fresh. Service was top tier and you get a cozy little vibe from your booth. Perly's took me down memory lane. Everything was so good, I might fly out a few times a year just to eat here. As the food lord Guy Fieri would say, gangster!

Yelp
Perly's is my number one favorite restaurant in Richmond. I'm kind of shocked I haven't posted a review for it before! It gives the best cozy vibes of a New York Jewish deli/diner and the variety of delicious foods to choose from never cease to leave me so happy and full. I always order the latkes and then depending on the time of day I either go with a hot dog or a breakfast plate they call the Schnorrer that comes with eggs, latkes, breakfast meat (I get turkey bacon - as crispy as possible), toast (I get an everything bagel) and coffee. The service is quick and friendly and even on busy days the wait is definitely worth it. The only downside is that it's only open til 3pm and not for dinner. Whenever a new person comes to visit me, I always take them to Perly's and they also leave a fan! :)

Yelp
A huge thank you for our friend, Matt, who advised this was a must hit before a day of drinking and he was so spot on. We got there at 10am Saturday and a party of 6. Wait time quoted was 45 minutes and we were sat in about 30. Super friendly folks working here. Our server was so patient for us first timers and made some awesome suggestions. The coffee was pretty dark and strong. Loved it. Poached eggs as an option for any egg dish is a huge bonus! I had THE SCHNORRER ($13 on the weekend) 2 eggs with smoked whitefish (add 1.50), potato latke with applesauce & chive sour cream, with rye bread and coffee. Just delicious. Tried the cinnamon babka, veggie knish and even some pastrami since someone had to get a sandwich too for sharing. A fantastic meal from start to finish. Be patient for a table and enjoy this historic restaurant. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
I had long been longing for a deli that provided a sandwich experience similar to that of my days in NYC. About a year ago a friend had recommended Perly's, but being one who doesn't hit that part of Richmond frequently, as well as their early closing, I hadn't made it, until yesterday, and I'm so happy I did. As I was nearing Perly's my eye noticed a bunch of people hanging out on the street, which immediately brought the mixed reaction of happiness that this may be the place and fret of a long queue on a chilly late morning. Upon entering was a somewhat long, but narrow diner-vibed establishment. When I told the young lady that I was dining alone, she asked if I wanted to sit at the counter, to which I immediately responded yes. It was the very last open seat anywhere! I ordered my go-to at any Jewish deli, a Reuben, with a side of potato salad. Also asked if they had Dr. Brown's, to which she said no (the only bummer of the experience). The two folks sitting next to me also ordered at about the same time, so I asked if they had been here before and they said "yes." The young lady said she went to VCU and any time she returned to the city, it was one of her must visit places when she came back to the city. Despite being crowded, it didn't take long before the plate arrived. The first thing I always do is peek at the corned beef to see if has been prepared correctly (cut the meat against the grain) and it was. The sandwich was not filled to the max with corned beef like in NYC, but given the price, it was a decent portion. The taste of the sandwich, though, was excellent! The taste of the potato salad was ok, but I didn't take away from the rating, cause the primary mission of a great sandwich was met. Extremely happy to have finally visited Perly's! Though it won't be a regular stop, simply based on my travel pattern, it is now officially my go-to place for NYC-style corned beef in the Richmond area~

My girlfriend and I came here with her sister while we were visiting in Richmond. It was a really good choice. This is a Jewish style deli restaurant. We started with the pierogis. This was our first pierogi ever and it was very good! I ordered the Oy Vey for my entree. It was absolutely delicious. It wasn't as good as some places in NYC but that's a tall task. My girlfriend ordered the Reuben and she really liked it too. The service was solid. It's super busy on the weekends so expect it to be a little slower. We had to wait about 30 mins for a table. Our server was good considering how busy it was. He got us all of what we needed. The ambiance is very diner oriented. It's got tall booths as well as some tables and a bar top if I remember correctly. If you're a local or just visiting, highly recommend this place.

Yelp
4.5 stars. Above average coffee. The server was quite friendly. Interesting menu. Very Jewish. I had the veal with the trout salad and scrambled eggs. I also tried a chocolate babka which was delicious. Very filling and not too expensive. And I see why people like this place. You might want to consider lining up at 8:50, 10 minutes before they open on a weekend.

Yelp
A must go to whenever visiting or living in rva! As you can see from my photos, we always come back. The people are fantastic, service is wonderful, and the food is phenomenal. Whenever we go we always try to go when they first open. They are popular and get fill pretty quickly! Be sure to know where to park/parallel park cause it can be tricky. Other than that, there's plenty of other places to explore while waiting if you are put on the list. Their matzo ball soup is a must! It's so hearty and the broth is just delicious. Hits the spot for cold weathers. I tend to always get their lox because the bagel is delicious and their cream cheese is sooo creamy. Brussel sprouts are great for the afternoon sides to share and their Jewish egg rolls. Lots of flavors and never left this place disappointed.

Yelp
Hubby and I went here on a whim because saw photos of the lox! We arrived for late lunch around 1:45pm on a Friday and all the tables were full. There were 2 bar seats open so we took those otherwise the hostess said we would wait about 20 mins. There were several 2 seater booths and square tables. We were given water and menus shortly after sitting down and were updated that the bartender would be with us soon which took about 5 mins. I ordered the Bloody Mary and it came with pickled cauliflower and slice of green tomato. Hubby ordered the maven since the hammertaschen wasn't available. We ordered the corned beef hash and cheese blintz. Never had a cheese blintz before and it was a delightful. My husband said he's familiar with the stuffing being sweet and creamy but this cheese blintz was better because the cheese wasn't sweet. The blueberries on top really brought it together. The corned beef hash with cream sauce on top. Just wow. Definitely a must try if you like corned beef hash! It tasted like it had some pickled bits in it and there were some crispy pieces of the hash that was exactly what I was looking for. We ordered the eggs over easy and it was a good decision. The corned beef hash was the best I've ever had. We even wanted to try the sandwiches after seeing them leave the kitchen! Will definitely be returning next time I visit Richmond!

Yelp
While visiting family in the Richmond area, I wanted to take my grandsons for good Jewish Deli and I found Perly's on the internet. I was surprised when we arrived and there was a 30 minute wait, but the wait was worth it. I started with the Jewish Egg Rolls, sounded interesting and was very good. Then had Tongue on marble rye with Russian Dressing, the bread was toasted, which I didn't order or like, but I enjoyed the sandwich anyway. A little skimpy on the meat for a Jewish Deli. My grandsons had Oy Vey! and the Tuna Schmelt, they both enjoyed their sandwiches. Service was good and decor very nice. I would definitely go back and highly recommend.

Yelp
For the long waits, price and cramped dining room, I had much higher expectations of amazing food from Perly's than what I experienced. After multiple times trying to dine in and being deterred by the long lines, my family was finally able to come early enough one day to only have to wait maybe 20-30 minutes before being seated. The dining room is cramped, small tables close together and very noisy with little sound proofing. All this is fine, and ok if the food is good. However the small portions and overall "meh" reaction I had to the food made all of these aspects not worth the experience and hefty price. I got the $16 Benny Goodman, and it was good... but not mind blowing. And while I didn't expect a huge portion considering the expensive ingredients, I still felt it was a bit wanting. The $15 Shpringen Katz! Was also pricey, and just not my tastes. Again, portion sizes wanting, for such a small fish sandwich at least fill half the plate with fries not a dinky little bowl! Lastly the Oy Vey and Reuben's were greasy, not stuffed full of meat as I've had before at other delis and just average IMO. For all the stellar reviews I had much much higher expectations of the quality of the food.

Yelp
These are (still) the bagels I will dream about. Make sure to stock up when you come by, they do freeze well if you get a dozen. The line will be out the door and then some on the weekends, but I promise it will be worth it. It is a bustling place and a bit loud and busy due to the number of people. There is not a great place to sit and wait, but you can head over to Stella's Grocery for a quick drink while you wait or just chill outside.

Yelp
There is not a good Jewish deli where we live so stopped by when passing through. This would be a 4.5 star for the food and the restaurant is old and beautiful inside but service was slow. I'm going to account that they are having a staffing problem. Our server was sweet, it just would have been nice if she checked on us more. Now the food was great! I enjoyed the matzah ball soup- so good and flavorful! Also shared the latkes and they were deliciou! Loved the applesauce that came with it! Husband enjoyed his triple meat sandwich and fries and potato salad. Both sides were delicious and plenty of extra to take home for another meal!

Yelp
I've always enjoyed this place. I've had a few things and of course the Schlubby Fries! This highlight is for the TEL AVIV TRIO a must try!

Yelp
I absolutely love love love this place. I love the casual atmosphere, friendly staff, quick service, quality of food and the price is more than reasonable. If you are a soup person, I highly recommend the Matzoh Ball Soup, and get the large, it is more than enough for a meal. It comes two gigantic Matzoh balls and with a generous portion of chicken and carrot. The broth is so flavorful and light, it is the soup for your soul. I am still dreaming about this bowl of soup every day. When it comes to sandwich, a classic Reuben cannot go wrong. The portion size is huge, the combination of the layered corned beef, kraut, and cheese, it is heavenly. It comes with a side too. It is a Michelin-star quality sandwich, you will want to come back for more and more.

Yelp
I just enjoy this place from the food, the music that's played, and the retro decor. Service is excellent, they're quick to refresh your coffee. I ordered Schlubby Fries added 2 over easy eggs, it was delicious. The havarti cheese with bits of pastrami...a breakfast wish come true. This place is worth your time and effort. ***Flight Attendant approved***

Yelp
All I can say is wow! Everything was amazing - from the food to the atmosphere and the service - Claire our waitress was exceptionally sweet and patient.

Yelp
This is one of the first places I've been in a long time where I genuinely can't wait to go back. Everything from the food, to the atmosphere, to the service was inviting and fun. We were seated very quickly and brought into the excellent little deli booths, which I absolutely loved. Our server was friendly and helpful, answering our menu questions and being sure we didn't miss any cool options. The decor is excellent as well, even had some old movies playing on the bar TV! We opted for mostly brunch items, I enjoyed the latkes and the egg sandwich. First off, they had a crazy good selection of bagels and cheeses to make it truly one of a kind - though mine with Swiss cheese on an onion bagel was incredible and I'd recommend to all. I can't wait to head back to try some other menu items! The latkes were excellent as well, crispy and fried nicely. My only regret is not picking up some cookies to take home. I loved everything here, and am marking it down as one of my top places to return to!

Yelp
For how high the reviews were and how hyped this place is it was definitely good but not like the BEST breakfast I've ever had. Solid but meets expectations so 3/5. Service was good - we came on a Wednesday morning and this place is packed. The inside is a cute deli/cafe with wooden booth seating and some regular tables. Be prepared to wait. We were lucky enough to be seated but we took the last table on a Wednesday morning and it was really busy. We saw multiple groups leave bc they couldn't accommodate larger groups due to their traffic. Service was good and fast. Coffee was just okay. The latkes we ordered as a starter and tbh they weren't my favorite. Well prepared and cooked but the flavor was a bit bland. The dill cream sauce was good but also pretty mild. The apple chutney or sauce they had for the latkes though was amazing. The latkes needed a little salt or something they just fell flat in terms of flavor. I had the schnitzel perlstein (veal schnitzel with 2 eggs smoked trout salad and greens) and my friend had a bagel sandwich. The schnitzel was a bit dry and again could've used a bit more flavor. The smoked trout salad was fabulous and the eggs were well done. The greens were pretty wilted and slightly brown so I just expected a bit more here. My friend said her bagel sandwich was good. Overall it came to about $50 for a coffee, oj, latkes two entrees and a side. So not bad. Pretty decent breakfast I'd probably be back for the trout salad it was really good. I'm not sure if it would be worth waiting for over an hour which is what I hear happens on the weekends. Overall a solid brunch spot in Richmond.

Yelp
Guessing I've been here close to 50 times in four years, there aren't enough stars for this amazing restaurant. The food is always on the mark - if it's ever been questionable, staff immediately remedied. All of their staff is wonderful (our family has a soft spot for Chuck & Lavender ), and the interior transports you to a New York Jewish Deli. They've gone above and beyond for birthday's (sticking a candle in black & white cookies), anniversaries, and family outings. I recently had to stop eating gluten, so I stick to the Benny Goodman & some fries. Before it was the Shapiro Schnitzel (aka one of the best sandwiches I've ever had). Perly's - I hope you're here for a long time. Once I leave the city, I'll be dreaming of your latkes and stuffed cabbage

Yelp
I would've give it a 4 stars if I didn't find a hair in my sandwich. Oy Vey! - the pastrami and corned beef was seasoned well and tender. The rye fell apart as I tried to pick it up. I think it would stay in tact if it was slightly toasted. Half way through my sandwich, there was a piece of hair on my pastrami. After that, I didn't finish the rest of my sandwich. Garlic & Dill fries - super crispy but the garlic and dill seasoning was very subtle. Babka - the flavor was good but super super dry. It would've been really good if it was more fresh.

Yelp
Absolutely incredible, nostalgic. Will remind you of being home in Bubbe's kitchen. Soul food. 10/10.

Yelp
Location is quaint. They have an excessive waitlist However when seated there are plenty of tables available. The food is lackluster. Bagel wasn't good. Couldn't even finish it. Not mention they were sold out of some bagel options 35min after opening. Pastrami and corned beef are ehhh. Granted I have been to some of the best Jewish delis in the county. Silver lining is the egg rolls are pretty good. It's okay for a trial but not a place I would recommend.

Yelp
Very popular restaurant with a solid selection of both classic and unique types of Jewish foods I came here for brunch with my friends and there was a 45 minute wait, but we opted to stick it out. Once we got seated and ordered it took a little while for our food to come out as well The portions here are massive. I was only able to eat 1/2 of the sandwich I ordered. Food was all very tasty, especially a smothered fries dish that my friends and I split

Yelp
Had been really missing my wonderful Jewish delis after making the move from Michigan. So glad to have found Perly's. We tried 3 different sandwiches, and hands down the pastrami was the best! Will definitely be back to try the chicken salad!

Yelp
Cute location, friendly service, and very good food! I had the borscht, which was mostly just okay, but it only got better from there. After that we split a potato latke, this was good. Then better still, the vegetable knish. My goodness that was fantastic. Highly, highly recommend that one. I also ordered a side of the carrot and sweet potato tzimmes. It was a good size and also very tasty. Finally, I had the Hirshfeld sandwich - it tastes like a good, fresh example of exactly what it sounds like. It's real good if you like that type of sandwich. The dill pickle on the side was good, as they typically are at Jewish delis, and the garlic dill fries were a nice side. We also ordered some bakery goods to try later/tomorrow, which I'm excited to get into!
