The Most Exciting Austin Restaurant Openings, May 2025 | Eater Austin

"A San Antonio taco truck from chef-owners Gaby Hinojosa, Charlie Gonzalez, and Jake Andrews serving creative, street-friendly plates such as flautas tucked into beef, coated in crema and served in paper cups, torta-like lonches tamaulipas made with hot-dog-bun-shaped bread, and asada fries with avocado salsa. A signature bargain: bring a bag of chips and they will fill it with meats, onions, and cheese (a Frito pie-style mix) for $10." - Courtney E. Smith

Parking at this Restaurant is a Pain👎To eat here you are going to have to pay for Parking. Pete’s Taco House Food is Good, it’s just the parking situation IS VERY FRUSTRATING!! What I do like is that this Restaurant takes care of the Military and First Responders👍

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Pete’s Takos is a hidden gem in the heart of San Antonio! From the moment we arrived, we knew we were in for something special—not just because of the delicious smell coming from the kitchen, but also because of who we were sharing the space with. San Antonio’s finest—EMS crews, firefighters, police officers, detectives, and even nurses and medical staff—were all lined up alongside us, clearly regulars who know where to find the real good food. If that’s not a sign of safety and quality, I don’t know what is! The tacos? Absolutely next level. The freshly homemade flour tortillas are soft, warm, and slightly chewy—just perfect. But the star of the show? The Barbacoa (only available on weekends). Rich, flavorful, melt-in-your-mouth perfection. Each bite was packed with that slow-cooked, seasoned-to-perfection taste that just makes you close your eyes and savor the moment. And the location couldn’t be better—just steps from the beautiful San Antonio River Walk. After indulging in all that ooey-gooey goodness, you can take a scenic stroll along the river to walk it off. It’s the kind of place you come for the food but end up staying for the vibe and local love. Pete’s Takos is officially on our must-visit list every time we’re in town. Can’t recommend it highly enough!

Google
I believe in Pete’s Tako House Supremacy! Since living in SA, I have easily come to Pete’s the most for breakfast tacos. The bean and cheese are the best I’ve ever had here. The carne guisada, picadillo, and carne asada tacos are also so good and mouthwatering. The enchiladas and puffy tacos are also such a good staple. To-go orders and in-person dining have always been very fast and with great service!

Google
I walked the river walk from Downtown until I came to the locks. It was then that I smelled something amazing. Found myself at Pete's Tako. This was my first day in Texas, and my first chance at Mexican food this close to the border. I was not disappointed. Had the most amazing Tacos. Service was great and polite. The atmosphere was good and clean. Would definitely recommend.

Google
I had the puffy tacos, one chicken, one beef they were outstanding. The guacamole was excellent as well. The proportions are large and the service is outstanding. I recommend eating here.

Google
I've never had a "miss" moment here. Food and service is always amazing. I've suggested Pete's to many friends and they've done the same. Great job Pete's Tako House.

There was a long gap about 15 years since I had eaten at Pete’s Tako House. My Grandmother loved going there. This was my first visit to the downtown location. I was happy the food was still delicious. Generous portions and the tortillas are so good. I don’t normally dine out for Mexican food because I can cook it at home. San Antonio is my exception to dine out when I visit they have excellent restaurants and Pete’s is one of them. The atmosphere was festive and welcoming. The staff is friendly and quick to help with anything you need. The prices are reasonable for dining in downtown San Antonio. Parking is limited for handicap. The outdoor seating is a nice cozy area. Plenty of seating inside and a bar provides a few extra seats. We enjoyed our lunch. I loved looking at all the decor and remembering previous visits with my Grandmother. New memories with my Mom.

Google
One of my favorite go to Mexican places in SA. Service was great, atmosphere was casual and food was good! I ordered the Pete's Plate which came with 1 enchilada, carne guisada, rice, beans and guacamole salad. My fiance ordered the verdes chicken enchiladas with rice, charro beans and guacamole salad. Both of which were delicious!

Yelp
First timer. I asked for a recommendation and one of suggestion was the street taco plate. It was fantastic. So much carnitas you can barely see the tortillas. Add the onions, cilantro and it is a filling meal. Perfect as I was starving. The staff was so friendly and seemed genuinely happy to work there; or perhaps i came in shortly before close (just kidding). They close at 15:00 but i never felt rush. I was so impressed i came back to get some takeout before heading to the airport. Again he suggested ordering individual tacos because they're individually wrapped in foil. Not surprising it was perfect. Luckily i ordered 4 (pastor, chorizo and potatoes, beef fajita, carnitas) as my flights encountered a total of 6 hours of delays. Definitely go back again to try other menu items next time i am in town.

Yelp
Visiting San Antonio. Our first experience with, puffy takos, aka tacos. Puffy tacos are not soft not fried crispy, they're in between. Pete's tako house will fill the puffy tacos with anything you can imagine. This place has been reviewed thousands of times. My review is not much different. Great service, quantity of food is excellent and the ambiance is homey and local. Just be sure you know what side of the road you park. One side is free, the other is not. If you're in the neighborhood, stop by. A real classic

Yelp
I am writing this review based on my experience today. I ordered the Chili Relleno plate to go. I work in the building across the street. I wanted to give the other dishes a try since someone brought in breakfast tacos from there. I'm a bit disappointed because there wasn't a lot of flavor. It definitely was underwhelming and needed a bit of salt. The charro beans, I have to admit, was actually good. If I were to eat here again, I'd probably would stick to the breakfast tacos.

Yelp
This place was recommended to us by the coffee stand next door. The service was very friendly and the tacos tasted great.

Christine V.

Yelp
Everyone was so friendly and welcoming! Ambiance was great. This was the TexMex we had been looking all over San Antonio for. Great Heuvos Rancheros and good breakfast tacos. Tortillas were good, if only the scrambled egg in the tacos wasnt so overcooked. Loved their signature green salsa. Thanks!

Yelp
I came here based off the reviews. It's not far from where I was staying downtown as well. Once you walk inside you see locals lining up for lunch as this place is only opened until 3pm. After getting seated if your entire party is there and the menu is given you get asked what do you want to drink? Then it takes awhile for that to be given to you and your order to be taken. The service is really a hit or miss and mine was a miss. When I needed the server, she wasn't around. The food took forever. Regarding the food for starters the chicken on the stick was ordered (it was like a thin boneless pounded chicken piece on a stick.) I also ordered a cup of fideo loco which was a noodle soup. The brisket plate was alright, I needed the salsa to give it a bit of flavor as it was quite bland. The tacos (takos) were huge if you were to compare it to the size of a regular taco. Maybe if I ordered something else, perhaps, it would have turned out to be a better meal.

Yelp
I am at a loss of words after trying this place today. I was so excited to eat here after seeing their reviews on Yelp and yet today when I came to check them out for breakfast, I was catfished hardcore lol. As a Mexican-American from California, I know what a decent taco is. My family is from Jalisco and Guanajuato in Mexico, so trust me when I say I know good Mexican food. But this, I couldn't even have more than one bite of each taco. I tried 5 tacos...chorizo and potato, egg ranchero, matchaca and egg, barbacoa and chicken fajita. Every taco needed salt as there wasn't much flavor. The tortillas were genuinely good and soft but the meats and eggs did them no justice. The service was honestly great. Our waitress was so kind and helpful. Resteraunt was cute and quaint however wasn't worth the trip today here. I honestly hate leaving these kind of reviews but if I can help anyone save someone money, thats just my goal here. Maybe they have a new cook in the kitchen I don't know, but I was totally let down. Be careful out there folks!

Yelp
OMGahhh I absolutely love this place!! My boyfriend and I had the Menudo and its the best I've had here in San Antonio.. Chilaquiles are yummy and the servers are soo very nice! Id recommend this place for sure

Yelp
Great space, roomy and inviting. Parking is limited for free but paid parking is available all around the area. Used to frequent the original location when Dora would take your order and serve as well. The tortillas are the same as I recall, fluffy and mouth watering. The carne guisada was good especially with cheese but could have been served a little hotter. Chorizo and egg was flavorful and not too greasy, I also got bacon and egg to go and the tacos were packed with food. Love the new location and the ambiance of the place. Street parking is convenient if you can find a spot. Nice, spacious waiting area and restrooms. Worth a trip.

Yelp
i absolutely loved the menudo, they were extremely generous with their portions and the flavors are very filling! would come again & i also tried the carne guisada plate which was very good. but lowkey i honestly would come again and try more of the plate because i got full and wasn't able to fully enjoy the plate because i got full from the menudo. service: very attentive and friendly ambiance: popular place but its a cute texas vibe to it

Yelp
I visited San Antonio with my friend a few days ago and did my research on places to eat in the area. I heard from multiple sources if I order here I should try puffy tacos, so I got the puffy taco plate! As a first timer, I was pleasantly surprised and impressed at how filling the puffy tacos were and it was so delicious! The plate came with rice and beans and some tortillas plus the two puffy tacos, but I was so stuffed I couldn't eat the whole thing! If I visited again I'd definitely get just the tacos but they were yummy! We came in at 1 PM and we got sat pretty quickly which was nice, and the waiter was nice. The place was lively and had good vibes. Overall, I'd say I'd visit again if I come back to San Antonio!
google avatar

Yliana S.

Yelp
The person I went with enjoyed their food, which is why I'm giving it four stars. They did not provide chips and salsa when we sat down, I had to request them after ordering. I didn't like the food but it could be more of a personal preference thing. The patio seemed like it could be a beautiful place to sit down and share a meal. Very busy on Sunday afternoons so be prepared for a wait. Or, just order to-go in advance if you're in a hurry.

Yelp
This is my go to anytime I want to have good Mexican food. I typically have el poco de todo. It is a sampler appetizer and worth every penny. The servers know us because we go so often so it's great. They have the best lemonade, margaritas and queso! The ambiance is festive and can be loud or chill. I recommend taking San Antonio visitors here over Mi Tierra anytime!

Yelp
What can I say about Pete's Tako House other than it is AMAZING!! Pete's is our go to for breakfast or lunch when we just want good Mexican food! The breakfast is legit... The lunch is legit.... The drinks are even more legit... Just go there and go there often!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Since I was in San Antonio, I had to get me some puffy tacos! This place was one of the places that had puffy tacos near our hotel so we pulled in here. Definitely a casual vibe, seems like a lot of locals eat here. Service was friendly, we got seated in about 10 minutes and we ordered our puffy tacos! I got the plate with 2 puffy tacos (1 chicken, 1 beef) and it came with a side of rice and beans. The tacos were tasty, definitely filled with meat and juicy! I preferred my chicken over the beef. Beans and rice were tasty too, I was definitely full after that! Reasonably priced as well. I'd definitely come back if I were in the area again!

Yelp
Service was great today for lunch. They are super busy. The city has added some parking but it is still at a premium. I was having a flashback craving to my childhood and went for crispy tacos. Lots of ground beef .. they are not stingy. The flavor was really good ... so often ground beef is bland or overly salty .. not here!! The borracho beans were super flavorful.
google avatar

Yelp
Good Tex mex with lunch specials. My mole was good and piping hot. Love the they honor veterans. Horchatas come with refills. Lots of people coming even by themselves during a weekday. Full bar too. Which my entree had more than just two little drumsticks. No one could eat all the refried beans and rice. Coffee piping hot. Puff taco yummy too. Friendly attentive staff. Good value. Just need more fresh options in my opinion. The tomato I got was not fresh - seemed kinda off actually.
google avatar

Ruby L.

Yelp
Food was really good. Service was great. BUT, it was super loud in the restaurant that you could barely hear the people at your table when having a conversation. Music was also way too loud.
google avatar

Richard G.

Yelp
The place was packed but the hostess accommodated us rather quickly. Decided to order house margaritas on the rocks and it was very good. I went with the Pete's Plate friday special with flour tortillas and was delicious. Noticing locals eating here as well, I knew it was a good choice. Colorful paintings and murals adorned the walls and created a wonderful setting.

Rocky R.

Yelp
This place has some of the best tacos I've had--fresh, flavorful, and perfectly made. The service is just as impressive: friendly, fast, and attentive. Highly recommended!!
google avatar

Lisa C.

Yelp
The food here was fantastic. Service was great. Definitely worth a stop and don't sleep on this place, it's large enough for bigger parties and a stones throw from the Riverwalk.
google avatar

Yelp
Loooove their breakfast tacos! Wish they added red sauce tho!!! Liquid leaked through paper bag so be sure to get extra napkins from counter for to-go order!!! Ambiance is excellent tho I didn't dine in.

Yelp
Pete's Taco House was a nice, relaxed spot for breakfast. We both had different combinations of breakfast tacos (eggs & bacon, eggs & machacado, eggs & chorizo). Tasty and affordable. Flour tortillas were much thicker than what we're used to, but on the other hand had a lovely fluffy texture. Didn't care much for the chorizo-it had a weird taste. Loved, loved, loved their complimentary chips & salsa. It was hard not to request refills, but we had to save room for the tacos!

Yelp
Ohhhhh my goodness this is probably the best Mexican restaurant I've ever been to hands-down (on account of my favorite breakfast foods and favorite agua fresca). Their migas tacos are sooooo good & I love that they make their tortilla in house! I Hear me out on my order - I get a migas taco a la cart, but I ask for them to make it inside of a puffy taco shell instead of a normal tortilla. LET ME TELL YOU - you can TELL they make it homemade - I've never had a puffy taco this good before! Sometimes I add some of their queso on top & always load it with red salsa (which is also top tier) Finally, to wash it all down - the most refreshing, creamy, homemade horchata. Horchata is the one drink I'm picky about because I make it myself at home the best haha & I usually can never find a restaurant that has horchata good like I make it. Well - Pete's Tako House hits the spot exactly. Yall, I drive out of town for these tacos & horchata multiple times, reoccurring. This place is my spot to hit when I'm traveling

Yelp
I truly was expecting more. Especially in San Antonio. You can typically throw a rock and find good Mexican food. The ambiance here is pretty standard for a Mexican food spot. The service is great, prompt and friendly. Very grateful for that. However, the food itself is mediocre. One of the biggest things you find in San Antonio is good tortillas and good menudo. This place fell short on both. Not a lot of spice to the mendo. They served it with onions and lemon. I had to ask for jalapeno and cilantro. Perhaps that's a personal preference, but many of the places I go will serve all of those on the side. It's not often that I leave food and don't ask for a to-go box but this is the place that I did it. Not a place that I would recommend or go back to. Probably ever. I'm sure it has a good fan base as it was fairly busy and the prices are fair, but it's not something that impressed me at all and in a city where there is exceptional Mexican food, this one was just overall disappointing.
google avatar

Matthew D.

Yelp
Food, service, omg this place is insane. Chips are the most perfect toritlla chip. Could use some extra lime and salt. Tacos were unreal. I'm a white guy in town from Denver, and holy shi*. 10/10 would recommend, and prices are more than fair. 5 tacos 2 drinks for $25 (2 tacos feeds one person)

Yelp
The amount of reviews this place has, really does live up to the hype. My boyfriend and I came here for breakfast on our way up to San Antonio and Pete's Tako House was one of the first ones to show up on the yelp feed. With over 1k reviews, it must really be that popular. And I must say, it was. I was quite surprised of how good my crispy taco place was. The meat was seasoned so well! I also got a puffy taco on the side. It was a little too greasy for my taste but still flavorful! Even my boyfriend loved his breakfast tacos! Bacon, egg, and potatoe as well as one pancake! It was fluffy and delicious. Their tortillas are soft, fresh, and hot! My boyfriend even said it reminded him of how his mom makes them. Boyfriend approved when it comes to the homemade tortillas. We both got agua frescas! A must have every time we go to a mexican restaurant. Both our strawberry and pineapple agua frescas were so refreshing on a hot day. Parking situation was a little confusing but we came right before the breakfast rush. Especially during the weekday. Easily a bookmarked place for the future!

Yelp
Sat at the bar for a late lunch, a local directed me to the barbacoa and eggs and he was right on. A healthy serving of tender beef with two eggs and 3 flour tortillas. I also had a couple tacos (chicharone and a chicken) and they were excellent as well. Topped it with a lone star beer to keep with the local theme. A little off the tourist scene but worth the walk. Plus the walk back to downtown helps work off the delicious food!
google avatar

Laura E.

Yelp
Family of four for $63. Food: was great. The tortillas were fresh homemade, the portions were huge (my daughter ordered two tacos and could only eat one), and the food was authentic. Service: was nice and friendly. Ambiance: was typical Mexican rustic with Spanish music playing while you eat atmosphere. Breakfast was so filling and delicious. Will definitely come back here for a hearty, inexpensive meal! Need to try the lunch. Update: went again for breakfast second day... the only thing I have to add is that I hate their bathrooms... they are kind of dirty. I get it, a lot of people pass through there but I wish they were a little cleaner.
google avatar

Alan H.

Yelp
Pillowy, fluffy, steaming, homemade tortillas...need I say more? I ordered four tacos: chorizo and papas, al pastor, chicken and fish. The tacos didn't come with onion and cilantro, which was a new approach for me. The charo beans were very flavorful. The salsa was great, the chips were great. The fish taco was the worst of the four but the other three were great. Great service. Quaint decor.

Angel M.

Yelp
Food is amazing taste sooo traditional I got the enchilada plate it was sooo good. Highly recommend if you're traveling
google avatar

Jake B.

Yelp
This is a cool restaurant that serves authentic Mexican food. I was surprised how quick my order arrived. The food was delicious, however the only complaint is that the tacos don't come with any toppings. Not a bad spot for a family dinner or grub with friends.
google avatar

Lydia P.

Yelp
Loved this place after trying it for the first time. We got seated pretty fast, but make sure you get there early because it started to get packed around nine. Our server was super nice and attentive, and the food was really good and hot. It's really nice in there and clean. I will definitely come back. All I got was tacos but next time I'll get a plate. Parking around there Sucks though because you have to pay. But other than that, I give it five stars.
google avatar

Todd M.

Yelp
Fantastic. Highly recommended. Great menu. The food and mixed drinks were great. A+ 5stars

Yelp
Went to Pete's for a quick breakfast after training session. We both ordered chilaquiles with corn tortillas. The chilaquiles had crispy tortillas with eggs, cheese, and pico de gallo. They tasted fresh, delicious and slightly picoso. The accompanying beans and potatoes were also delicious and well prepared. Corn tortillas were thick and obviously homemade. Yummy!!
google avatar

Yelp
We decided to try this place after I saw it got voted best breakfast tacos in SA. We came on a Saturday morning around 11, but we didn't have to wait too long. Our waitress was super nice. The pineapple agua fresca was delicious as were the chips and salsa/queso. I think we went wrong with ordering the huevos rancheros instead of regular breakfast tacos because it was kind of bland, and the bacon was thick and chewy. We would still go back to try the breakfast tacos.

Alex V.

Yelp
Service is fast & and excellent. Food was delicious super good. and the police look very cool and I would come again.

Yelp
Place wasn't to packed on a Sunday morning. Food was pretty good and the service was fast. Will definitely try this place for lunch next time I'm in town

Great food and awesome service! Highly recommend if you are looking for great Mexican food downtown. Plus breakfast tacos are the best!

Yelp
I have mixed feelings... I wanted to love this place, but my experience here was underwhelming and I wanted to be honest. We came for breakfast and ordered a potato and egg taco, a brisket taco, and a chilaquiles plate. The potato and egg taco was fine, probably the best part of the meal. Unfortunately, the bottled green salsa at the table didn't have much flavor, and neither did the chilaquiles plate. Honestly, the majority of the food was bland. I took a bite of the brisket taco, which was a stewed pulled brisket instead of a slab of brisket, and immediately got a mouth full of fat. I actually had to spit it out. To top our experience off, towards the end of the meal I looked around and noticed other tables had chips and a different red salsa and we never received any. I saw the people who did receive chips and salsa were adding salt to the salsa bowl, probably because it lacked flavor as well. I think there are many places to get good breakfast tacos in San Antonio, so I will probably not be returning here.
google avatar

Yelp
Food here was SOO GOOD! Very impressed. Service was good. Ambiance was okay for a weekday. I would come back if I'm in the area.

Yelp
The food! So delicious! And the fideo was crazy good! I will be back for the migas and frijoles con chorizo.

Yelp
This is clearly the spot to come to when you want some really good San Antonio Mexican food. You cannot go wrong because you got everything under one roof - delicious food, great service, the best selections, excellent cooks, and you even got options for some booze if you are feeling it. Sure there might be a wait but you will be very happy you did when you finally take the first bite in the housemade chips and salsa. Trust me if the chips and salsa are banging you will know the rest of the menu and entrees will be too. Parking is going to be a thing here because it gets busy around here especially in the mornings - late lunch on the weekends. Be ready to have your ride drop you off while they search for a good parking spot along the road. Bring your patience with ya and be chill. I saw a coffee cart across the street from Pete's so you may want to drop in and grab a coffee. You are allowed to bring it in with you and to your table. The staff do not mind here. Bean and cheese is always going to be my number one item I get from here. The tortillas are legit and homemade. No surprise there, I know, but I was loving the bean to cheese ratio on these soft medium sized tortillas. The enchiladas looked delicious too so don't be shy and get what is calling you that day.
google avatar

Pete D.

Yelp
Wow. Yelpers, Current Best of - you did me wrong. Service was atrocious. Almost had to beg to order, a refill or get the check. Ordered the picadillo and barbacoa. Picadillo was super greasy and lacked flavor. Barbacoa was the worst in San Antonio. Went on Saturday and the SA meter maid was ticketing every vehicle outside. Bad on bad. So many better places than this has been.

Yelp
We found street parking before lunchtime on Friday. The server was super friendly, explained everything, and checked on us a couple times to make sure everything was okay. Flour tortilla was delicious... my husband and I tried the chicken crispy tako, beef crispy tako, brisket tako, chorizo and egg tako, shrimp fajita tako with guacamole, (refried) bean and cheese tako, (charro) bean and cheese tako, carne guisada tako, and carne asada tako. Beef crispy tako felt like taco bell with better meat obviously and without the taco bell seasoning (I do not like taco bell seasoning) so even though this was better than taco bell I did not like this style. Carne asada was slightly dry, and bland without any add ons, but I did like the flavor. I got carne guisada since this was their popular menu however it confirmed my dislike for beef stew meat + gravy combination. However if you like that flavor it was good and tender! I liked the refried beans but personally loved the charro bean flavor even more with cheese. I also enjoyed the shrimp fajita tako with guac very much. The added vegetables made it better. The chorizo and egg was surprisingly good as I strongly don't like how salty chorizo can be... it was super delicious! If I were to order again I'd get the charro bean with cheese, chorizo with egg, and shrimp fajita! Also their complimentary chips and salsa were amazing!

Yelp
Food is scrumptious. Our first stop in San Antonio. I was eyeing the chicken in a stick but decided to order the puffy tacos - so delicious. The chips and salsa were on point as well that we asked for another round. Service was quick and pleasant. The place has a great lively atmosphere like a cantina. It was spacious and really clean. They are open until 3pm only. Go try this place.
google avatar

Susanne S.

Yelp
The food was served hot, but it was lacking in flavor. I was hoping for a bit more seasoning or depth. The service was slow, but the staff was friendly and welcoming. I'd be willing to come back and give it another shot--especially to try the breakfast tacos!

Yelp
Discovered this spot when we left the Riverwalk to visit their neighboring brewpub. The food was wonderful! We enjoyed the chili relleno, tamales and enchiladas. The beans and rice that accompanied were delicious and perfectly cooked. The wait staff was pleasant and helpful, prices were fair and we were very very pleased to have found this cafe. Folks at the neighboring table ordered breakfast for lunch and from appearances - they did not make a mistake
