"This old school pizzeria in Virginia-Highland offers slices ranging from $3.50 to $5, depending on toppings. We come to Pielands to relive our youth by snagging a slice of classic pepperoni and playing the old Pac-Man arcade game in the corner of the dining room. Or take a slice to go and walk the quaint streets of VaHi and pretend we’re in a romantic comedy waiting for our meet-cute with a fellow pizza-lover. Either way, the real joyful moment is in the slices—thick and chewy with the perfect cheese to sauce ratio." - nina reeder, juli horsford
"Pielands, the by-the-slice New York pizza restaurant in Virginia Highland, feels like a retro throwback with its red accents and video games. It’s an almost divey atmosphere, so feel free to come after that soccer game, with several pizza varieties ranging from classic cheese and pepperoni to limited-time specials like the chicken, bacon, and ranch. Subs and salads are also on standby. Those arcade games are free to play, so you can kick back and enjoy your slice while your kid hangs with Pac-Man." - Lia Picard
"Open For: Lunch and Dinner Price Range: $ - $$ Filling the void left behind by the closing of the beloved Everybody’s Pizza in Virginia-Highland, pizzeria and slice shop Pielands gave the neighborhood something to cheer about when it opened in 2021 in the former Goin’ Coastal space. Expect classic New York and square-style pies and slices here, including the margherita-like Noni pizza, named for co-owner Billy Streck’s grandmother, and a white pizza topped with garlic butter sauce and mozzarella, ricotta, pecorino romano, and parmigiano cheeses. Slice offerings change daily. Pielands also serves Italian subs, salads, and wings. (Streck also co-owned Nina & Rafi on the Eastside Beltline, which has now closed.) Best For: By-the-slice New York or square slices" - Eater Staff
"Virginia-Highland was a pizza desert until Pielands Sub & Slice opened in 2021, but the old school pizzeria feels like it’s been part of the neighborhood for years. Well-worn tables have held hundreds of pies, and there’s usually a group of kids huddled around the Pac-Man machine in the corner. And in the bathroom, the walls resemble the pages of a child’s sticker book collection (if they were pizza maniacs). It’s worth a visit just to see the Millennium Falcon in the shape of a pie. While all the arcade and sticker nostalgia is fun, you're here for the pizza, particularly the Noni—a square pizza with a homemade marinara sauce and crust sturdy enough to hold giant globs of melted mozzarella balls. It’s the perfect on-the-go pie because it won’t get soggy on the ride home. photo credit: Mhandy Gerard photo credit: Mhandy Gerard photo credit: Mhandy Gerard" - Juli Horsford
"Pizza by the Slice focuses on Sicilian-style pizza served by the slice or whole pie, along with Jersey-style sub sandwiches." - Beth McKibben
