Hoja Taqueria

"What started out as a postage-stamp-sized restaurant squirreled away in downtown Miami has grown into a colorful, stylish hangout on Miami Beach. Gorgeous tilework lays the groundwork for a team that remains committed to sourcing different varietals of heritage from family-owned farms in Oaxaca and grinding and pressing them on site daily. Taco highlights include charred carne asada and smoky chicken, dressed with little more than onion, radish and a smear of vibrant salsas. There is, of course, even more on offer in the new space beyond a handful of tacos, flautas, and a few burritos. Tequila-based cocktails, appetizers like tuna tostada, and shareable entrees like tlayudas and a fried al pastor-marinated whole snapper round out the expanded menu." - Michelin Inspector

The Best Things We Ate This Week

"Shrimp & Potato Flautas If you are seeking out great Mexican food in Downtown, go to Hoja Taqueria. The little spot pumps out some really good tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and a fantastic tres leches cake. But the star of their menu really are the crispy shrimp and potato flautas. I’ve had them in takeout form before, but I sat down to eat at the small restaurant for the first time this week. Now I can confirm that the flautas taste even better when paired with one of Hoja’s excellent smoky pineapple margaritas." - ryan pfeffer, carlos c olaechea

Hoja Taqueria Miami Beach Review - Miami Beach - Miami - The Infatuation

"Hoja Taqueria is a good Mexican restaurant inside Miami Beach’s Generator Hotel. There used to be another Hoja location in Downtown, but now this is the only one. They serve tacos, burritos, flautas, tuna tostadas, and more. Hoja is definitely one of the better options in Mid-Beach if you’re looking for a fun spot with good cocktails. The space is dim and intimate, and great for a date or relatively low-stress dinner before a night out. photo credit: Julian Cousins" - Ryan Pfeffer

Google
AMAZING food, bursting with flavor in every bite. I had the Cod Taco and the sauce and garnishes were so on point!! And the homemade chips…out of this world!! The guacamole was so fresh, as was the salsa and there was a peanut crisp sauce that capped it just right. Mind blown! Husband had the steak, cooked perfectly and the red rice and refried beans were the best I’ve ever had. Flor, Cande and Juan worked so well as a team — they clearly love their jobs and take pride in this experience. Brava!!! We’ll be back.

Google
My name is Samuel from Puebla, Mexico. What a joy is to discovered this South Beach gem, as a Mezcal lover this place is INCREDIBLE as they have "Mezcal Fligths" a 3 shot mezcal tasting experince" they have 3 different types. I love Mezcal it makes me feel great and along with some Mexican tacos or even a great shrimp Key west ceviche with Cucumbers and Jicama! Great vibe! Make sure u see Rodrigo at the bar! Grade A+ service.

Lockie Hunter

Google
Taco flavor was very good, however, they did not serve double corn tortillas with the tacos. So the effect was that since it was a rather juicy taco, the tortilla disintegrated completely. I love corn tortillas, and they should be yielding, but in most places when they give you corn tortillas, then serve at least two tortillas to avoid the big messiness (if they’re giving you a lot of ingredients that are moist). In this case, the mushrooms made the corn tortillas completely fall apart. It’s expected if this happens hours later (if I take one home or if it’s been sitting on the plate for a bit) but right after it was served, in the first bite, it completely fell apart on the plate. Please double up on the corn tortillas in the future. Other than that, the ingredients were good, the vibe was fun. The bartenders seemed to know how to make a balanced drink. The atmosphere was really interesting, a bit dark, but with lots of flare and special touches. The result was cozy and festive.

Charles Baldwin

Google
Excellent food along with great servers/bartenders. Chicken and beef was fresh off the grill, and the drinks were nice and strong. Will definitely come back!

Fabiola “Faby” R

Google
I visit this place often, my favorite dish chicken flautas, and of course, the margaritas are my #1 cocktail. Flor and Tati are always happy and give great customer service. That is the reason I returning to this hidden jewel.Nothing negative to mention.. Just to say thank you, girls, for your good vibes , smiles, and great service. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Google
Tasty bar food at a steep price. If money and service is no concern, then stop by this cozy little bar with some of the most expensive bar food on the beach with little to no views accept the hotel lobby. Also note it’s an automatic 20% gratuity charge even if you’re taking it to-go and they also dont take your order at your table.

John Hannan

Google
This is a popular Mexican restaurant, little did we know that reservations are strongly recommended here. There were a couple of reserved tables unoccupied when we arrived. It was raining, so outside seating really wasn't an option. We ended up getting a table after preceding to eat at the bar. There's three different areas of seating. This is a fairly small comfy bar restaurant. It has a young modern vibe, with upbeat music. The staff were friendly and helpful. The food was fresh and tasty. Serving sizes are on the smaller side. Prices are a little high based on quantity, but quality makes up for the margin. Their house margarita was nice. Something unique here and enjoyable is a peanut chili sauce when you order the nachos with guacamole. This is a good place for smaller groups or couples.

Angela Schmidt

Google
They was really nice. We got the happy hour. Everything was delicious and the margarita wasn’t weak. 🤪

Yelp
Omg, this place is great. The vibe is awesome and the music was jammin. I really like this place a lot. The food was fantastic and service was good. My carne Asada taco, the meat was tender. My partner loved his nachos. Also, there is gratuity included on the check and it was 20%. I think it was reasonable, the cost of living in Miami is high. Overall, I would give this place a 5 star for sure. I would come back again.

Yelp
//4 stars for decent food and price //-2 for utter scheme run for good reviews As a restaurant attached to a hostel it serves both guests and locals. With its cool tiki/Caribbean theme decor, it serves Tex-Mex dishes as well as typical American dishes. Food quality: I did try their Al pastor taco with a side of tortilla chips. The beef seasoned greatly and the taco was filled with fresh condiments all served in double corn tortillas. It had fresh taste - wish they served them with a slice of lime for more freshness. The tortilla chips are your run of the mill chips with regular salsa- nothing special but not bad. Drink: Fineapple Colada was ordered. Great balanced taste. Although after a couple of minutes, it did look like it was curdling but that can happen with alcohol and dairy products. For a cocktail, it did not have a kick whatsoever. It's good for hydration. Cost: Miami is expensive - it should not be a surprise. For the cocktail and al pastor, the cost run about $38 with a 10% guest discount. Not cheap and certainly not within a regular hostel goer's budget but one must try it once. About this "scheme" mentioned above. If you were planning to attend one of the hostel's event that involves pikio, especially if they're offering free drinks, please do your integrity a favor and don't. In order to get the "free Pikio punch" you are required to place a 5 star positive goggle review about the restaurant especially mentioning a couple of names that work there. They will not give you the drink until you show them the review you will post. It is the most manipulative scheme I've seen at a hostel. Shame you are praying on these guests. No one is sending these warning out because they have flooded the google review with false 5 star positive reviews. Please be warned Overall: a one try restaurant - if you're desperate.

Yelp
This place was super cute small place in Miami across from the hotel that we were staying at I feel like it's a great place to stop and get a nice cold drink and cool off from the Miami Heat but the food seem like a Tex Mex place We love Mexican restaurants but this one needs a little something I started at the bartender. He was absolutely very nice all us some really hot sauce that was amazing but I think it just took a very long time to get our food and drink drinks.
google avatar

Bren K.

Yelp
Damn. The burger was so good(Classico), fries nice and hot and crispy. Forgot to take pics. No need to get the second patty(an extra on the menu which we considered). The carne asada tacos were okay. Maybe a misstep, but feel like it needed salt and a squeeze of lime. Hot sauce in the table is tasty, and spicy. THE QUESO....after one bite, we were all thinking about coming back tmrw to each get our own order of it. Stretchy and ultimate in cheesy browned crust. At thanksgiving we all compete for homemade Mac & chz, this tastes like the winner. For real.
google avatar

Kristine H.

Yelp
First day in Miami, we stopped in for a quick bite. We were seated right away, though the service was a bit on the slow side. The food was average overall, but it did the job for a casual, quick meal.
google avatar

Ekaterina L.

Yelp
Absolutely rude and underqualified personal. Both waitress and bartender have some kind of attitude that creates bad vibes for the place. Came to have dinner but didn't even get to order as they were tossing and bossing me around, couldn't seat outside, couldn't sit at the table while reviewing order, then they simply started ignoring me until I left. Will never step a foot into this place again! Horrible Miami experience!

JoAnne B.

Yelp
Fun and fabulous food! Had the chili jam burger it was juicy, with just the right amount of spice. Partner had the tacos and loved them. Decor is so cute. Definitely worth a stop!
google avatar

Renée A.

Yelp
We were suggested to go here by our hotel concierge, and it did not disappoint. The food was amazing, the atmosphere was vibrant, and the drinks were hands down the best margaritas I've had in Miami. Flor was an amazing bartender, I will definitely come back here while visiting Miami.
google avatar

Priscilla D.

Yelp
Absolutely loved this spot! The food was incredible--I had the skinny spicy margarita, tuna tostada, and elote, and everything was full of flavor. The bartender was amazing--friendly, attentive, and made one of the best margaritas I've had in a while. The vibe here is on point: beautiful aesthetics, great energy, and the music adds the perfect touch to the overall experience. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Pikio Taco at the Generator Hotel in Collins Avenue is a Mexican and Latin American Restaurant that serves tacos, quesadillas, nachos and burritos. They also have burgers, sandwiches and nachos if you want more options. They also have breakfast options like toasts and breakfast plates with eggs, bacon and potatoes. Service is good, cozy and casual restaurant ambiance. Check it out!
google avatar

Dawn W.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch and some cocktails after leaving an exhibit across the street on the beach. Service was good and the food came out quick which was a plus because I was starved! I had the chicken tacos which were pretty good. Nothing too over the top. Just a shredded chicken taco. I wanted to try the chicken flautas but they were out. The margaritas were good and strong! Ended up having two. It's definitely a cute place to stop in when in the area.

Scott S.

Yelp
Good food and service, albeit a little overpriced for what it is. Not surprising for the area. Nice location on Collins Avenue.
google avatar

Christine B.

Yelp
I was just getting over the stomach flu so didn't get to try as much as I would have liked but I got the mushroom quesadilla and my mom got some nachos. The nachos were actually pretty awesome. Some of the best I've had in a long time. I thought the guac was only ok though. The quesadilla was solid but the veggie one was more expensive than some of the meat ones which seems weird. I would recommend if you're in Miami Beach.
google avatar

Monique' M.

Yelp
We really enjoyed our experience here. The bar staff, owner and other guests were extremely friendly, sociable, entertaining and interesting. The mushroom sopes were spectacular! They were filling and full of different flavors and textures, creating the perfect bite.
google avatar

Lauren S.

Yelp
This place is beautiful and the hotel it's in is very cool, but the food here was mediocre at best. I got a burrito which was actually quite tasty, but my friends' chicken sandwich and quesadilla left a lot to be desired. Great service.
google avatar

Sandra P.

Yelp
It was worth the walk in blistering heat in South Beach to make it over to Hoja Taqueria which was rated as a "must try" Mexican restaurant in the area. Loved it! The Hoja Margarita and Pepino Papi cocktails paired well with an appetizer of Guacamole and a trio of salsa. They specialize in hand made corn tortillas using several types of corn. The chicken and pork tacos were flavorful and the chicken enchiladas meal was not only delicious but super filling! Highly recommend!

Mike P.

Yelp
So I had been looking for a good Mexican restaurant here in South Beach, ironically we were staying at a hotel caddy corner to this restaurant. Shut the front door! The Asada was top shelf, I had a burrito, my daughter had tacos. The chips are very thin and crispy, the salsas were very good especially the avocado salsa. My burrito wasn't a ginormous one that you can only eat half of , it was perfect size and portion. It looked like homemade corn tortillas my daughter had. The service was excellent Very happy customer 10 out of 10 If you are looking for a good steak burrito this is your place!
google avatar

Luz A.

Yelp
Such a cute place ,relaxing vibe's definitely recommend the food ! The quesadillas are to die for 10/10 they stuff them with lots of meat and cheese. The small side of chips are so tasty with the salsa. I got a watermelon mixed drink it did have mezcal I am not a big fan of mezcal but I wanted to try, but if you love it you'll definitely be able to taste it, overall I had a great experience and service was wonderful! Highly recommend this place if you're looking for something tasty
google avatar

Char S.

Yelp
This place must be new or perhaps I've never paid any mind to it. Clearly for a reason. This place has the WORST FOOD. Omg... I mean... bad. The service was very slow. Customers who came in after us were served first. The only thing good about the place was the music play list. Never again.
google avatar

Houman A.

Yelp
Fantastic food and finally a meal that didn't break the bank in South Beach. The mushroom burrito was quite tasty and my family loved their chicken burrito and chicken enchilada. Elote and guacamole were amazing.

Cami M.

Yelp
The tacos are low quality for the price of 16 for two. We had the Al pastor taco, one bite was just fat. The other was carnitas, so hard to bite through the meat to eat the taco. It was hard to even finish the 2 tacos each we had. I only rated it above 1 stars for the cocktail. It was the only redeeming factor. One of the best I've had. Green goddess Service was good. The place was cute. Just not worth it.
google avatar

Keysi J.

Yelp
This was DELICIOUS! To the guac to the taco the food was finger licking delicious! This is a super low key restaurant in downtown you had to go thru some stores to the back. Loved the low key feel! If you're in downtown this a must try! Service was great all recommendations were amazing!!
google avatar

Molly D.

Yelp
I was really expecting more from Hojas, but it still was a decent meal. The interior was super cute and I've seen some good reviews but was a little disappointed in their food menu and drink. We started off with the forgotten fruit and michelada and they were alright. Kind of perfumey? Not my favorite for 16$ a drink. We also got a bunch of appetizers to split. The chicken flautas were my favorite. Super crispy and the avocado salsa was good. Nothing to rave about. The shrimp ceviche was good too but not super flavorful. We also got a side of rice just to try and it was a little dry and flavorless. Our service was good but she only checked on us once and forgot to bring us an extra plate after we asked. Cute place, but the experience wasn't the best.
google avatar

Los D.

Yelp
We came by for the end of happy hour and enjoyed the half price appetizers and $10 margaritas. Food and drinks were both great. Nice decor and music. Very limited seating in the bar and we were required to order at the counter for food and drinks with a ten minute wait. Slow and unfriendly service kept this place from 5 stars.
google avatar

Ruben V.

Yelp
This taco place is inside the Generator Hotel/Hostel on Miami Beach. The vibe and ambiance is five stars. The food was average and one plate we had was below average. I do recommend the craft cocktails. The Tierra y Fuego was FUEGO. very good. If you want Mexican food I can think of a number of other spots on the beach where the food is better quality. But if you're in the mood for a little neighborhood tour stop in here for a cocktail and some light bites.
google avatar

Jeff H.

Yelp
Wow! Pikio Taco is a must! The ambiance is super cool and chill, great overall vibes. Wait staff was on top of everything. And the food is out of this world! Please make this stop while visiting Miami Beach. The street corn is incredible, tuna tartare and beef and chicken tacos were on another level! Thank you for making our trip even more memorable!!
google avatar

Ebony E.

Yelp
Very pricey for tacos and enchiladas... but go figure it's South Beach. Lol but I really enjoyed the enchiladas good a flavorful covered in cheese yet not soggy. Service was good, and the setting intimate. Low lighting soft music.
google avatar

Cassandra B.

Yelp
I got the chicken tacos. Very good! Two small street tacos that come with chips and salsa. If you're a big eater, you could eat two of those dinner orders. It's a good serving for 5 foot me!! Loved the atmosphere and chill feel. The salsa is sweet. Also, nothing was spicy!
google avatar

Claire S.

Yelp
I was surprised to see Hoja Taqueria inside of a hostel, but I'm definitely glad we popped in for lunch. Both my husband and I enjoyed our carne asada burritos. The atmosphere is very casual and perfect for lunch or a laid back dinner.
google avatar

Martha C.

Yelp
Amazingly fresh and savory bites! Hoja is inside the generator hotel. The decor is instagramable and lovely. The menu isn't overly large meaning each dish is thought out. GET THE HOT SAUCE. My friend and I split several of the small plates and were stuffed. Service was friendly and split and we had a great convo with the chef about spice!
google avatar

Sergio F.

Yelp
The three stars I'm seeing from a bunch of other reviewers sound about right. I stopped by at lunchtime while working in the area near the Generator Hostel where Hoja is located. I was able to get a seat in the AC in the dim and cozy inside dining room. Their menu covers pretty much all of the tex-mex classes, and I enjoyed a fairly well packed & spicy chicken burrito. There was actually a large amount of chicken filling it, and the tortilla & chips were of a nice texture. For a lunch portion, $14 was pretty fair and expense report friendly (It was a work lunch, remember). But the $5 soda and 20% automatic gratuity got me "the look" from accounting. Service was adequate for South Beach; maybe I'll have to try it and check out the cocktails others mention when I'm not on reimbursables. 3 Stars and a "Placeholder" spot for now..
google avatar

Sunil R.

Yelp
In contrast to most hotel restaurants, Hoja was surprisingly good. Great fun decor and a cool vibe. I ended up shazaming the songs they were playing a few times. The NY steak which came with pickled veggies, guac, and corn tortillas was really good. The meat was tender and everything was delish. Service was ok, the waiter forgot my water and was slow but it was not a biggie, he was nice. I might have to go back again before the trip ends.
google avatar

Nicole F.

Yelp
I visited last week after winning two Miami spice dinner vouchers for Hoja Taqueria. This restaurant is located on the first floor of the Generator Hotwhich side note looked like a really cute place to stay. We decided to sit at the bar and our server/bartender couldn't have been nicer. They were not able to make the drink I wanted off the menu (I think they were missing an ingredient) but she asked what type of drinks I liked and made me a really delicious custom drink which was exactly what I was wanting. For the apps we went with the shrimp ceviche and chicken tinga flautas. The ceviche came with a generous portion of key west pink shrimp and chips for scooping. The sauce on it was delicious and it was very light and refreshing. The chicken flautas were huge and so crispy but not oily. The chicken was super flavorful. For my entree I couldn't resist the fish tacos. These were so good. The fish was fried to perfection and paired really well with the cabbage. The other entree we picked was the carne asada burrito, which was hearty although I think the fish taco was better. Both entrees came with a side of chips and salsa. For dessert they brought out tres leches which tasted great but a little dairy heavy for my personal taste. I just wish they had at least another option for dessert on the spice menu. Overall I had a great time and I can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Vicki J.

Yelp
The food was delicious and the service was excellent!! Pastries were out of this world... We enjoyed everything!
google avatar

Puja B.

Yelp
Cute place that is a small Mexican restaurant in the generator hotel. We ordered the salsa and gauc trio, the cheese quesadilla the mushroom sopes, sweet potato tacos. They were all good, but not great and something over the top memorial. The star of the show was the churros. It's a cute place to stop for drinks but I wouldn't go out of my way as a local to come back. I appreciate the burnt jalapeño salsa.
google avatar

Coree R.

Yelp
What a little hidden gem. Walked over from our Hotel -- very small but cute place. Service was great. Shrimp ceviche was amazing. I would order it over and over again. Fish Tacos were great -- cooked well and super light. Husband said chicken tacos were also very good. Rice and beans were fine, came out hot and cooked well but nothing special, but it didn't matter because the ceviche was that good. They do add a 18% gratuity, but we would have given it anyway! Great little spot!
google avatar

Krishna P.

Yelp
Their sweet potato tostadas were to die for. Come here to tasty some high quality dining. If you come hungry and expect affordable meals, this is not the place. Happy hours can make it a bit budget friendly but still watch out for the prices and compare it with regular dinner prices. Some items were almost as expensive. Wasn't impressed with their chiltepin salsa. Very limited seating indoors but there is additional seating on the patio if you want.
google avatar

Mary P.

Yelp
We had a great time here at Hoja. Our servers were Flor and Rodri. They did such wonderful jobs serving us our drinks. Drinks and appetizers were good. Ambiance was peaceful. I'll definitely be back.

krystin M.

Yelp
Ummm where to start. Waited 15 min for water. Had to go back to the bar to ask. Stood in line at the bar for 5 min. Finally flagged down a food runner. Waited another 5-10. Ordered chips and guac, which came with what appeared to be 2 oz of chips, salsa was on par with Tostitos. My Kid ordered a quesadilla, would describe it as damp cardboard with melted American cheese. Tuna tostada was just okay. Rice and beans were okay. 80 dollars later. No idea how this place has 4 stars. I gave it 1 star because it appeared reasonably clean. Also mandatory 20% gratuity. Again, 25 min for water. Brutal.
google avatar

Kelly Q.

Yelp
3/5 | $14.00 | Chicken Flautas The highlight of Honda Taqueria was the aesthetic and vibe of the restaurant. The inside was very trendy and had a great ambiance. However, the food was very average and overpriced. I tried the chicken flautas, which were decently flavorful but pretty dry. The serving size of 2 small flautas was also pretty small for the $14 price. I left still hungry from the meal. The service was good!
google avatar

Denise S.

Yelp
Hoja Taqueria was pretty good... think of a more upscale bistro-type Mexican food here. This was the first restaurant that we ate at when we got to Miami and it was a little pricey (to be expected) but I wouldn't dub this place "authentic". We had margaritas, a few apps, and tacos for main course. Service was great!
google avatar

Hanah H.

Yelp
This is located near mid beach- if you are staying in this area you don't have too many options. This is located in a hotel and has later hours which is convenient if it is in walking distance to your hotel. It's a very small joint but the ambiance is very cool. Chips and salsa come with each meal although the salsa needs a bit of salt. Fish tacos weren't my favorite but I saw other reviews about it. Service was quick and we were in and out in 45 minutes which was convenient.

Jillian S.

Yelp
It was a perfect spot for a casual dinner with our kids. We plan on going back again before we leave during our vacation.

Brian M.

Yelp
They include a mandatory 20% service charge on the bill. That's not how tipping works. You don't demand how much tip you receive. Then the server doesn't even have to try if they already know they are getting the maximum amount. You also only get 2 small tacos for $16.
google avatar

Emmy S.

Yelp
We popped in for breakfast before our big day of touring. We were staying in the hotel. The decor. WOW! The food. Fantastic! I had Chorizo and potatoes and a cappuccino. My only regret is that we didn't leave enough time to linger over this delicious meal and do it justice. We will be back tomorrow to try Huevos Rancheros. Or maybe the Chilaquiles. We'll have to see!
google avatar

Alexander C.

Yelp
The service was good and pretty fast, but the food was just not it. When I ordered ceviche I was expecting something bright and fresh with lime, but this was more of a sweet ketchup sauce. The salsa that came with the chips tasted like they tried to turn jarred pasta sauce into a salsa. Maybe it was just a bad night but there are much better places in the area.
google avatar

April K.

Yelp
Don't be fooled by the simplicity appearance of the food and menu! This place is SO GOOD! Would highly recommend the chicken quesadilla & carne asada burrito. The ambiance is very hipster and relaxed. Service was pretty standard; friendly and tentative. Suggest making a reservation as the main dinning area has very minimal seating.
google avatar

Jayla W.

Yelp
Charmingly flavorful and fresh morsels! Hoja can be found under the walls of the Generator. The decor is gorgeous and worthy of Instagram. Because there isn't a huge menu, every dish has been carefully considered. ACCESS THE HOT SAUCE. I was full after dividing several of the little plates along with my pal. We had a wonderful conversation on spice with the chef during the cordial and appetizer food!

M B.

Yelp
Great food. We ate on the porch - bc it was way too loud inside. Delicious food - though the chips w salsa and guacamole was delicious - we could have used twice the amount of chips - especially since it was $18.
