The 38 Best Restaurants in Montreal

"Pikliz might be easy to miss, tucked just off Saint-Henri’s main culinary drag, but it’s worth seeking out. Since opening the place in 2019, the Acacia brothers have channeled their Haitian roots into every corner of the cozy space with family photos, homey decor, and Caribbean beats. Their griot poutine — loaded with juicy, pulled griot, Creole-spiced gravy, and pikliz for some tang — has won over many, but don’t sleep on their marinated-and-then-fried kabrit (goat), crispy plantains, spicy mango chicken wings, djondjon rice, banana donuts, or fruity cocktails." - Valerie Silva

The Best Poutine in Montreal | Bon Appétit

"A Saint-Henri favorite opened in 2019 by two brothers of Haitian descent, celebrated for a griot poutine that pairs Creole-spiced gravy with marinated, slow-cooked fried pork and is often finished with a scoop of bright pink pikliz (a tangy cabbage, carrot, and habanero relish) for freshness. The lively, tropical-decorated space and small menu of Caribbean-accented items—think mango juice, Haitian beef patties, and plantains with guacamole—make for a distinctly community-rooted experience." - ByValerie Silva

The Best Montreal Caribbean Restaurants | Eater Montreal

"First starting as a pop-up run out of a Saint-Henri café, it didn’t take long for its Haitian-Quebecer owners Akim and Abdel Acacia take over the address. Named after the piquant Haitian condiment, their steady menu of Haitian beef patties, creole shrimp, griot wraps, and pulled griot poutine, among other specialties, is as delicious as it is reliable." - JP Karwacki

A very charming spot with flavorful Haitian dishes. We had spicy mango wings (wangs), lakay salad and black rice with beans (riz djondjon). Nice sour beer and mango michelada. Very attentive and sweet service.

Genuinely enjoyable dining experience. From the excellent service, to the atmosphere (the decor!!), and of course the food. I have to say that I can’t remember the last time I had a meal this well seasoned. I wished my meal never ended.

Hands down the best Haitian restaurant in Montreal! Authentic, flavorful dishes with an atmosphere that’s warm and welcoming. Cute and delicious cocktails. Great music. The staff are amazing — friendly, attentive, and make you feel like family. Every visit is a 10/10 experience. Don’t miss out!

Google
the food was very tasty. inflation is a thing but there is no way you can make people pay 25 30 $ for a plate and you barily fill anything in it...yet alone rice which costs nothing to make...ive joined a picture of what a 28$ plate looks like... disappointed but the potential is there. fix your portions and it will be amazing. chicken plate was the same portions. also. mini macaroni, mini pikliz, mini plate at prices that make no sense for the size.

I’ve always been curious about what people were eating whenever I passed by Atwater Market, and I finally got the chance to try it! I ordered the BBQ Chicken, which tasted quite similar to jerk chicken, and the hot sauce on top was delicious with a hint of mango. As for the patties, I tried both the codfish and beef—while the beef one was tasty, the fish one had a bit of a strong flavor. The chicken wings were average and could be skipped. The highlight of the meal was definitely the shrimp. It was perfectly coated, fried to a crispy finish, and paired with a fantastic sauce that made it absolutely irresistible. We even ended up ordering a second round of it! Overall, the portions are on the smaller side, more like tapas. Without drinks, it’s about $30 per person.

Google
Very small place, there's like probably 8 small tables. Very nice waitress. The portions are very small tho it's a tapas vibe, you need to get several plates to be full. The food was okay nothing wow, I feel like I was expecting more of this place, more flavour. We got the wings, plantain, the shrimps and the guacamole with the plantain chips and it wasn't enough, we ended up going somewhere else to eat more.

Simply YUMMM YUMMM YUMMMM!!! Very authentuc Haïtan place delivering authenticity on all three aspects: food - decor - music/ambiance. Staff is very friendly and welcoming. The place is cosy, classy and affordable. Make sure to try their wings (veryyyy spicy) and their salad! (It’s super unique and extraordinary)

Overlooked Haitian cuisine place. I was surprised how tasty the dishes were! I went on a Wednesday night, so they were missing some of the menu items. Shrimps 10/10. Overall great experience, from food to service and atmosphere.

Yelp
My favorite cousin and I both have recent high school grads and took them on a trip to Montreal as a grad gift. We wanted to make sure we experienced the best food this city had to offer and after doing an extensive social media search, I found this small, off-the-beaten path eatery in the St. Henri neighborhood of Montreal. What a great choice!! We arrived right on time for our 7pm reservation and the place was already packed. We were immediately seated and took in the electric vibe, bangin' music and cool-ass artwork. The smells emanating from the kitchen had us ready to pig out...and that we did! Everything on the menu looked so good we had trouble deciding what to order, but we finally ordered the plantain chips, mango wings, slow-cooked goat, fried shrimp and black rice. We tore all that food up and got an extra order of the shrimp. Our servers were friendly and funny and got a chance to meet the owner the owner and he even bought us a round of shots! He told us he was opening a bigger place later this summer! Wish I could go back for that! Pikliz was definitely the food highlight of our trip and we can't stop talking about it. If I ever go back to Montreal, I'm running to Pikliz!

Yelp
Small and cozy restaurant was great service. The music and the vibe was good. I quite enjoyed the wings and the guac with plantains. The shrimp was tasty and I highly recommend that as well. The fried plantain side was a different taste in texture, but the rice and beans were flavorful with the chicken broth. They were nice enough to give us a sample tasting of some beverages in a shot. There is street parking. Overall it was good experience and I definitely recommend and I hope that you do as well.

Yelp
This was one of my favorite meals in Montreal! I honestly had never tried Haitian food, but my host at The Cloakroom recommended this place so we trusted him. My husband and I both love Caribbean food, but didn't know what to expect from a Haitian place. Pikliz did not disappoint! Conveniently, the night we went, there was a special tasting menu for two deal. (every night has different deals) For around $45 Canadian, we enjoyed plantains & guacamole, shrimp, delicious pork, and dessert. Everything was absolutely delectable. The vibe of the restaurant is casual and quirky, and the staff were very friendly and patient with us since we didn't know the ins and outs of Haitian cuisine. Loved every bit of our experience, and will absolutely return if and when we visit friends in Montreal again.

Yelp
Mwen renmen li!! ("I love it!!" in Haitian Creole) We took a chance on being seated as walk-ins on an unseasonably warm Saturday evening in October. It paid off! We were the second party to arrive within 30 minutes of them opening and were seated almost immediately. The host told us there were a few reservations that evening, but she could seat us if we would be finished in an hour. I appreciated that she offered us a table and was clear about how much time we had... if we wanted to stay. We browsed the menu online beforehand, but seeing what other guests had on their plates helped us decide on our meals. We had fried shrimp with rice x peas, grilled chicken with rice x peas, spicy wings, and their signature poutine with goat. We cleaned our plates in no time and washed them down with great cocktails. The decor is charming and there's a fun(ny) employee poster behind the counter. The prices were very reasonable for the food quality and service.

Yelp
we stopped by pikliz for a quick lunch after being recommended it by max from maison cloakroom. we had to stop by quickly before heading out to the airport. the owner was so kind and helped us pick what to get and what portion sizes since we weren't really sure on how much to order; we ended up choosing the goat poutine (small), the special of sweet and spicy shrimp, and the fried cassava. both mine and my friend's favorite was the cassava sticks. they were very evenly coated and fried really well, like very crispy and seasoned well too. he served them with aioli topped with pikliz the pikliz were so fresh and spicy. the shrimp were really delicious too, and the goat poutine was a nice little fusion of haitian and canadian... we've been noticing every place sells poutine here haha but the goat poutine really hit the spot. the owner also recommended the banana beignets soooo good. strongly recommend, the banana was not overpowering and they were super crispy. a little thick still crispy and fluffy. definitely worth checking out and a lovely way to end the girls trip/our time in montreal, thank you pikliz

Yelp
The food was great but the service could use a little work. I'm of Haitian descent but I don't speak Creole, and I live in Florida; so I knew what I wanted but didn't know exactly how to ask for it. The hostess was quite annoyed with that. Someone came from the back who understood a little English to help us, which we truly appreciated (she saved the score). Make sure someone in your party speaks the language. The restaurant was clean and pleasant. The prices were reasonable, and there was a lot of food. Being from America, we were not aware that we could not get a bag to take our leftovers. That same hostess was extremely rude when we asked, but the other woman who'd helped us earlier explained that that is not allowed in Quebec. This was the first and only restaurant during our vacation that we had enough food to take back to the hotel; so, if dining in, make sure to bring your own doggy bag. The food was delicious! Just like my grandma made it in her prime. A tip to the owners: extend a little grace to those visiting. I'm not sure if I'll be back when we return to Montreal because of this.

Yelp
After many, many attempts over the span of two years to visit @pikliz we finally made it! It was definitely worth the wait as we got to sample their newly created cocktail menu. Decorated with alluring colours, big plants/vines, interesting paintings and a whole bunch of personal pictures that give it that extra warm, welcoming and genuine vibe. The same energy radiates from the owners, who upon meeting, you'll feel like you've known for years. Rooted in influences passed down by family (say it with the Vin Diesel voice) every dish is  meticulously created and thought out in detail. It's clear their goal is to show us the full beauty of their cuisine. We tried a lot and all of it was wonderful.  Exquisitely cooked, tender, juicy meat, delcious crispy shrimp, even crisper plantain chips... It goes on. We can't really explain in writing how much we enjoyed ourselves but we strongly encourage you to go and see for yourselves.

Yelp
Such a delicious spot for Haitian food! They had a smaller menu but everything on the menu looked incredible. It was really hard to choose only a few dishes, so I'll have to go back soon! We ended up ordering plantains and guacamole, the Haitian patties (in both cod and beef), the griot plate with makawoni and riz collé, and as part of a YES Perk, we got a Pikliz Poutine. The restaurant itself was really cute and had great decor and music. There's not a lot of places to sit. There's parking street parking around but not directly in front of the restaurant. If you have mobility issues, the doors also didn't look like they were accessible (and had an additional step up). Since this is a COVID time review, I was there for takeout. Service was fantastic. They let me take my time in deciding and if I had any questions, they welcomed the questions. They also took the time to explain the sauces that same with the food. Considering I ordered quite a bit, I didn't wait too long either! The food itself: when we finally got home to try it, our car was smelling INCREDIBLE! I was so excited since I LOVE Haitian food. Everything was still hot when we got home, and we dug in straight away. Everything was delicious and there were so many different textures and tastes for the food. It's hard to choose a favourite when you love everything! I really liked their pikliz: spicy and acidic, so yummy and goes perfectly with the rest of the food (especially the poutine!) I can't wait to go back to try the rest of the dishes!

Yelp
I had a wonderful evening in this restaurant yesterday with my two friends. I first came across this restaurant through poutineweek and was finally able to come here after putting it on my list of restaurants to try. The menu is easy to understand, and the food is great : we all liked our dishes. The riz colé lacked a bit of flavor, but the griot was good. The manager with green hair saw that we were struggling with choosing our dishes and didn't hesitate to recommend her favorites to us : she was very outspoken, friendly and cool. Will definitely come back if I'm ever in the area again.

Yelp
My wife and I wanted to try "real" Haitian food and decide to visit this little place. We arrived at 6:30 pm and the place was packed and loud. No one greeted us and after waiting a few minutes I asked a waiter how long it'll take to get us a table. She said she didn't know and didn't have a waiting list. We asked if we could seat outside and she said yes. After waiting another 10 minutes without even bothering to serve us water I went back inside and asked for the menu. I was pointed to a QR code in a window. We waited again for someone to take our order in vain so I got up again and asked an other waiter if he could take it which he did. After a few minutes he brought our drinks (Jamaican flavoured water with no alcohol since we don't drink), which was no more than a mix of syrup with water and ice in a cardboard cup. 20 minutes later our waiter came out and I asked her about our food. She said she would look into it. Another 10 minutes passed and I went inside to ask again. The waiter went to the kitchen and came back asking me to order again since the kitchen didn't have it. I asked her to cancel it and for the check. She charged $16 dlls just for our drinks!!! I was sure it was a mistake and told her so. She just smiled and said that there was no mistake!! Didn't even apologized!! If you decide to try this place make sure you ask for an inside table and prices for whatever you ask for. And be prepared to wait over an hour to be served if at all!

Yelp
Delicious food and friendly service. I tried the pikliz poutine, the bannann pezé and the beef and fish pâtés. They were all very good and flavorful. The griot on the poutine was very tender. The plantains were crunchy on the outside and the sauce that came with it was delicious. The staff was nice and friendly and the service was quick. Would definitely come back.

Yelp
To the best of my knowledge, the name 'pikliz' might be a direct translation from 'pickle' SOMETHING. It is, in fact, Haitian style pickled cabbage. And the pikliz here packs the right amount of heat and complements every other dining elements very well. I recommend adding a side of pikliz if it doesn't come with your order. I dropped by Pikliz within their first week of opening and tried their griot (fried pork) and kalalou (okra). I thought the okra was delicious (4.5/5), but the griyo was rather bland and dry (3/5). In terms of flavours, the chefs paired the griyo plate with different sauces (see photo) and the flavours DID pair, but it wasn't enough, in my opinion, to save it from the tough filament like texture of dried pork. I also ordered a beef patty (4/5). It was flaky and homey, but could use more filling. Overall, the one thing that makes me remember Pikliz was -- the pikliz. It did a good job adding dimension to the fried pork and I feel like it could bring any food to life.

Yelp
Pikliz is a tiny Haitian restaurant with an exciting menu. It is conveniently located next to metro station and in a neighborhood that is not very busy, where parking is just easier. I really enjoyed the pikliz poutine, the griot was full of flavors. The portion was big and I ended up with leftovers for lunch, which were delicious even the next day. We also ordered the crispy shrimp, heavenly! The main dishes come with some hot sauces and the pickled cabbage pikliz, as well as two sides, I chose the plantains and mini guacamole. These extras added additional spiciness and richness to the shrimp. Last but not least, don't miss to try the dessert of the day, the upside down cake with pineapple was perfect with coffee the next morning. I'll be very happy to visit again Pikliz for more shrimp goodness one day, when we can sit on a table in this cozy little space and dream of Southern seas while savoring yummy Caribbean food.

Yelp
Haitian food? Yes, please!! Loved their guac and fried pressed plantain chips. Their wangs are yammy and griyo is very filling. The service is great too! The place is literally next to the metro station so if you are traveling from another neighbourhood, your food will stay warm. Definitely recommend!

Yelp
Discovered Pikliz through a Yelp elite event. You can order online or over the phone, the menu is really clear and most dishes come with a choice of 1 or 2 sides. We ordered the griot wrap, the poutine, the creole green beans and a side of plantains. Everything was delicious but the griot wrap and poutine really stood out. I really didn't expect the poutine to be THAT GOOD, it was delicious. It had the perfect amount of cheese curds, sauce and fries and the griot just went so well in the poutine. The wrap was just delicious as well!

Yelp
Convenient location in st henri. The food is great ,pricing & portions are fair. Loved their green beans salad & cant wait for it to get back on the menu. Their plantains are always crispy & delicious. Soft spot for their codfish chicktay. Wish they could offer more variety as I pretty much explored the entire menu already oops but I highly recommend. PS : get the pineapple cake * I dont like pineapples but this cake is scrumptious:)

Yelp
I had walked in front many times but had never thought of ordering from there before. One evening, I had a long day and I decided to try it out to encourage a local business. It did not disappoint I had the chicken with rice and salad and it was amazing. I highly recommend trying it!
